WASHINGTON — After days on the campaign defensive, Democrat Barack Obama accused rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday of leveling criticism straight from the Republican playbook and said even so, he will win the White House over John McCain and an "out of touch" GOP.

"I may have made a mistake last week in the words that I chose, but the other party has made a much more damaging mistake in the failed policies they've chosen and the bankrupt philosophy that they've embraced for the last three decades ..." Obama said.

"This philosophy isn't just out of touch, it's put our economy out of whack."

Obama spoke at The Associated Press annual meeting, a few hours after McCain had made a less combative appearance of his own.

The Arizona senator announced support for legislation to protect the confidentiality of news sources, although he also challenged the news media to acknowledge its errors "beyond the small print on a corrections page."

He also displayed his penchant for occasionally differing with the Bush administration, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession.

In his speech and in a more relaxed question-and-answer session meant to approximate the setting on his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus, McCain repeatedly declined to label Obama an elitist for the comments that have roiled the race for the White House in recent days.

"I think those comments are elitist," he said. "I think anybody who disparages anyone who is hardworking, the dedicated people who cherish the right to hunt and observe their values and the culture ... and say that's because they are unhappy with their economic conditions, I think that's a fundamental contradiction to what I think America is."

Story continues below

"These are people who produced the generation that made the world safe for democracy."

McCain's remarks were his latest reaction to Obama's description last week of residents of small towns that have been economically distressed for a generation or more.

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," the Illinois senator said at a private fundraiser in San Francisco. The Huffington Post reported the remarks on Friday.

Obama's comments at the AP's annual luncheon appeared to reflect a double-edged political imperative.

While still locked in a tight race for the party's nomination, he wants to do what he can to blunt McCain's recent rise in hypothetical general election matchups. At the same time, he does not want to give ground to Clinton, whose aides have welcomed the recent controversy as a possible way to raise doubts about his electability in the fall.

Obama walked to the podium with a speech that included strongly worded criticism of McCain, who is assured of claiming the Republican presidential nomination in September at the party convention in St. Paul, Minn.

"He's had a front-row seat to the last eight years of disastrous policies that have widened the income gap and saddled our children with debt," Obama said. "And now he's promising four more years of the very same thing."

Obama said McCain supports permanent tax breaks for the wealthiest that he once opposed, backs trade deals without safeguards for U.S. workers and promises privatization of Social Security.

Obama's focus turned to Clinton when he began fielding questions, though, reflecting what aides say is a rising anger after days of criticism of his comments.

Asked about the impact of the long nominating battle on the party's chances of winning the White House, he said, "I have tried to figure out how to show restraint and make sure that, during this primary contest, we're not damaging each other so badly that it's hard for us to run in November.

"Obviously, it's a little easier for me to say that, since, you know, I lead in delegates and states and popular vote."

Clinton "may not feel that she can afford to be so constrained," he said, adding at one point that she's "been deploying most of the arguments that the Republican Party will be using against me in November."

In fact, Clinton released a new ad in Pennsylvania on the subject of Obama's comments in which several unidentified people described as her supporters talk about how insulted they felt by what Obama said.

Later, while speaking to reporters traveling with him to Pennsylvania, McCain said Obama should apologize for his remarks against "small-town America."

"I think his remarks may be defining," McCain said, adding that Obama's unwillingness to apologize indicates "a certain out-of-touch elitism."

He also called on Obama to repudiate former President Carter for planning to meet with Hamas.

Some people are still jumping on the NAFTA thing as if it were originally a Clinton deal. It wasn't. The initial meetings, agreements, and final details were worked out between George H.W. Bush and the prime ministers of Mexico and Canada. For some reason, once Bill Clinton took office, he continued the agreements that were begun under Bush. If you want to blame someone for the losses the U.S. has sustained because of NAFTA, you should blame a Bush AND a Clinton!

of course the Bush and Clintons have always watched each others backs. I think Obama is being strategic to keep the focus on the Clintons.

One more time on the OBAMAPOLOOZA Train:

Even really smart guys have synapse failures now and then. But whether they are deemed significant--evidence of stupidity if you're George Bush, or of senility if you're John McCain--depends on whether the people who attend the AP's Annual Meeting want you to win. Here, Obama flounders for a while because he can't remember how many states there are in the Union:

"And I've now campaigned in 47 states, actively. And I think South Dakota is the last state that I have not had a campaign event in.
Now that doesn't mean that I expect that I will win all 50 -- or 48 states and Alaska and Hawaii -- all 50 states."

But you won't be seeing that on any of the comedy shows, because the comedians want him to win.

This Republican playbook nonsense is silly. The democrats have a playbook and so do the republicans. So what?? Hillary wants to be president so bad she can't take it. The thing is Obama keeps screwing up by by hiding things and saying stupid things. Hillary isn't going to not capitalize on this stuff. Here is the sad part the democrats should be a absolute shoe in for the White House after the Bush Iraq debacle.....but they arent. In reality neither of these democratic candidates are all that good and are both very flawed.

Obama appeared at 2004 party at Rezko's home

April 14, 2008; 12:57 p.m.
Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama's name came up again at the Antoin "Tony" Rezko corruption trial and in a way that earlier filings in the case did not telegraph.

Stuart Levine, the prosecution's star witness, said he and Obama were at a party Rezko threw at his Wilmette mansion on April 3, 2004, for Nadhmi Auchi, a controversial Iraqi-born billionaire who Rezko was trying to get to invest in a South Loop real-estate development.

Auchi, now a citizen of the United Kingdom, has faced criminal charges in Europe. He also figured in the revocation of Rezko's bond early this year after attempting to wire him more than $3 million. Upon learning of that attempt, U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve declared Rezko a flight risk and ordered him held in a federal jail in the Loop.

The Rezko party in 2004 was designed to induce Auchi to pour money into the South Loop investment. Obama's presence at the party was not previously known. At the time, Obama was fresh off a surprise win in the Illinois Democratic primary for U.S. Senate and was riding a crest of national publicity.

So he was at a party at Rezkl's home? So what? Obama is not implicated in any way in Rezko;s trial. Just wait for the Peter Paul trial in CA, which the Clintons are directly involved in, along with Ed Rendell.

It really doesn't matter, does it? Obama's name in conjunction with REZKO and AUCHI in the same sentence is enuff for the majority of the American Electorate, isn't it? Say it often enuff and long enuff and voila', he's SMEARED with the scandal. Do you think McCain will let it slip from the minds of Americans in the run-up to November? Get real.

The first really explosive revelation of the Tony Rezko trial came out today, and it will have Barack Obama playing defense yet again. Obama had insisted that he never met Rezko’s shady financier, Iraqi-born Nadhmi Auchi, but a key witness put the two of them together in a 2004 fundraiser. It raises all sorts of questions about how Rezko and Obama raised money for Obama’s Senate bid that year:

The glee that exudes from you guys is pathetic. OMG, Obama knew someone in the Chicago political establishment who has a shady past. Guess what, so does every other Illinois politician. The Chicago Tribune, and other prominent Illinois papers have been all over this story with their investigative reporters and have found not even a hint of Obama’s association with illegal activities.

In comparison to the very dodgy associations and bankroller’s of Bill and Hillary, including foreign governments with whom Hillary (were she to win the nomination) would have to be negotiating trade deals, this story of Obama meeting this person or that person at a fund raiser is absolutely nothing. The conflicts of interest and extreme political liability of Bill and Hillary Clinton surpasses that of any Democratic politician in the modern era.

You mention St. McCain’s ability to attack Obama once he is the nominee (as if the Republicans will leave Bill and Hillary alone); yet he is in a very precarious position if/when he does so. At present everyone is leaving alone the giant story of his direct involvement in the Keeting 5 case. His close associates spent significant time in jail. Just because he admitted he made a mistake and has “learned” from his experience does not give him a pass in politics. He is very vulnerable to opening up his own wounds should he go after Obama with the flimsy set of accusations that you suggest.

My husband says the Clintons (with their rich DLC friends and their corporate meetings in the world's flashiest pleasure spots and the multi-million dollars in speaking fees to advocate policies that rip off ordinary Americans) are beginning to remind him of Jim and Tammy Faye Baker and their constant appeals to the little guy (while at the same time they rode around in Cadillacs and wore Rolexes and lied about heaven). Especially now that she is hawking a special kind of "little people's religion" as her very own.

Not only that: Little Missy Gun Control has turned into the duck-blind killer, and the person who traveled around flacking NAFTA has morphed into someone who insists that in her heart of hearts, she always opposed it., as though THAT isn't yet another strong indicator of her generalized hypocrisy.

One would think that somebody who knows how to shoot would have noticed a CLEAR lack of sniper fire!

And LIttle Missy Nantucket is now mocking San Franciscans....echoes of the Bushrovians and the way they call Nancy Pelosi "Sanfranciscoliberalnancypelosi."

And, still, my friend insists that Clinton is only doing what has been done to her BY MEN. Nevermind that the man she is doing it to did nothing but decide to run for the same office that she is desperate to win.

Hillary and Bill need to make a decision as to which party they want the nomination from -- the Democrats or the Republicans -- b/c they seem like they're so desperate to get back in the WH, they just don't give a fuck anymore what people think about what they say and do!

Stay in there, Clintons! Don't give up! Keep spending money like water! Keep taking dirty contributions from your Wall Street buddies!

Keep up the attacks on Obama -- he can take it! You only prove his critics wrong and the Republicans right -- about YOU!

Do others out there remember back when Al gore was running for president and he was found to have received money from someone in the South Korean government? Do you remember the furor and outrage, and the media fire storm that went on for weeks? Yet here is Bill Clinton, taking money from all manner of foreign governments. He is Hillary’s chief advisor and campaign surrogate. Talk about a huge conflict of interest.

Hey MSM, where is the investigative journalism that is supposed to protect our democracy? Where is the list of the Clinton contributors to the Clinton library? Why can’t we, the voting public, know to whom Hillary owes political favors before we vote in these primaries?

The MSM doesn't want to seem to be too critical of the Clintons. Carl Bernstein has a good piece on why this is so, posted on cnn.com today.

Hey folks - while this is all very entertaining, we should really get back to the real issues:

* food and gas prices have reached record highs

* home foreclosures are the highest since the great depression

* people are losing jobs rapidly

* we ARE in a recession

* The War in Iraq will cost more than $3 trillion

*WE are paying $4.3 Billion a MONTH in disability payments for soldiers from the 1 month Gulf War - do you want to even guess what that bill will be for the soldiers from Iraq?

Since 2000, this country has been in a downward spiral and we are finally really feeling the pain of the 2 Bush administrations. Eighty one per cent of the country says that we are going in the wrong direction. Why would anyone vote for John McCain or another Bush term?

Here's why. Every eclection season our gitfted politicans partice their perfected skill of pitting us against each other on issues like Guns, Religion, Abortion, Affirmation Action - all cultural issues. This ALWAYS distracts us from the real issues that I mentioned above. You would think by now every American, including those "blue collar" workers would have caught on to this game. Yet here we are again fighting over the same cultural issues and clearing a path for the Repulbicans to once again walk into the White House leaving us like we were in 2004 wondering "what the heck happened". WELLL THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED -

"Protocol of White House Conference November 11, 1993"

EXCERPT:
White House Intent on Sex Education; the Catholic Church:

Participants: The President, HRC, TFM, RN, IM and GS
[The President = Bill Clinton, HRC = Hillary Rodham Clinton, TFM = Thomas Mack McLarty, RN = Roy Neel, IM = Ira Magaziner, GS = Gene Sperling, and RH = Richard Herget (not listed as being present)]

HRC:

For me, this is a dying religion in this country. They have no power and, if we cannot arrive at a mutual agreement on this, we can proceed against them by increasing the number of priest-pederasty charges... ...

And I'm sure the issue of female priests can be solved in the same way and at the same time. A package deal. The born-agains are most irritating problem. The neo-fascists here are allied with some of the religious right...

If we do this a little bit at a time, the public will get the impression that all churches of the right advocate killing abortion clinic people, stockpiling deadly weapons like the Koresh nutties and eventually plan to attack or fight government agencies . . . like in Waco . We can make the connection in the public mind.
