WASHINGTON — After days on the campaign defensive, Democrat Barack Obama accused rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday of leveling criticism straight from the Republican playbook and said even so, he will win the White House over John McCain and an "out of touch" GOP.

"I may have made a mistake last week in the words that I chose, but the other party has made a much more damaging mistake in the failed policies they've chosen and the bankrupt philosophy that they've embraced for the last three decades ..." Obama said.

"This philosophy isn't just out of touch, it's put our economy out of whack."

Obama spoke at The Associated Press annual meeting, a few hours after McCain had made a less combative appearance of his own.

The Arizona senator announced support for legislation to protect the confidentiality of news sources, although he also challenged the news media to acknowledge its errors "beyond the small print on a corrections page."

He also displayed his penchant for occasionally differing with the Bush administration, saying he believes the country has already entered a recession.

In his speech and in a more relaxed question-and-answer session meant to approximate the setting on his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus, McCain repeatedly declined to label Obama an elitist for the comments that have roiled the race for the White House in recent days.

"I think those comments are elitist," he said. "I think anybody who disparages anyone who is hardworking, the dedicated people who cherish the right to hunt and observe their values and the culture ... and say that's because they are unhappy with their economic conditions, I think that's a fundamental contradiction to what I think America is."

Story continues below

"These are people who produced the generation that made the world safe for democracy."

McCain's remarks were his latest reaction to Obama's description last week of residents of small towns that have been economically distressed for a generation or more.

"It's not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," the Illinois senator said at a private fundraiser in San Francisco. The Huffington Post reported the remarks on Friday.

Obama's comments at the AP's annual luncheon appeared to reflect a double-edged political imperative.

While still locked in a tight race for the party's nomination, he wants to do what he can to blunt McCain's recent rise in hypothetical general election matchups. At the same time, he does not want to give ground to Clinton, whose aides have welcomed the recent controversy as a possible way to raise doubts about his electability in the fall.

Obama walked to the podium with a speech that included strongly worded criticism of McCain, who is assured of claiming the Republican presidential nomination in September at the party convention in St. Paul, Minn.

"He's had a front-row seat to the last eight years of disastrous policies that have widened the income gap and saddled our children with debt," Obama said. "And now he's promising four more years of the very same thing."

Obama said McCain supports permanent tax breaks for the wealthiest that he once opposed, backs trade deals without safeguards for U.S. workers and promises privatization of Social Security.

Obama's focus turned to Clinton when he began fielding questions, though, reflecting what aides say is a rising anger after days of criticism of his comments.

Asked about the impact of the long nominating battle on the party's chances of winning the White House, he said, "I have tried to figure out how to show restraint and make sure that, during this primary contest, we're not damaging each other so badly that it's hard for us to run in November.

"Obviously, it's a little easier for me to say that, since, you know, I lead in delegates and states and popular vote."

Clinton "may not feel that she can afford to be so constrained," he said, adding at one point that she's "been deploying most of the arguments that the Republican Party will be using against me in November."

In fact, Clinton released a new ad in Pennsylvania on the subject of Obama's comments in which several unidentified people described as her supporters talk about how insulted they felt by what Obama said.

Later, while speaking to reporters traveling with him to Pennsylvania, McCain said Obama should apologize for his remarks against "small-town America."

"I think his remarks may be defining," McCain said, adding that Obama's unwillingness to apologize indicates "a certain out-of-touch elitism."

He also called on Obama to repudiate former President Carter for planning to meet with Hamas.

When Hillary said that Obama was using the "Karl Rove" play book, she stated that Obama was lying about what one of his advisers said to the Canadians about NAFTA. Well it turns out that the Canadian goverment denied what the Clintons were saying about Obama BUT HER top adviser Mark Penn was helping a Nafta deal in Colombia and her husband got paid almost $1,000,000 to push the same deal. When her first lady record was released it showed she went to several pro Nafta meetings. Plus in her book she said passing NAFTA was a great accomplishment. So Obama was not using the "Karl Rove" play book.He was telling the truth. But now Hillary is using the same terminalogy that Karl used against Al Gore and John Kerry. He called them "elitists". Hillary Clinton is now calling her fellow democrat an "elitist". But Barack Obama was raised by a single mother and his grandparents. His family was on food stamps at one point. What he said recently wasnt "elitist", it was the truth. When things go bad in the economy and towns get poor, good people turn to what they love,(religion and hunting).Bad people turn to blaming other people for their misfortune,( smart people know what he meant). And Hillary Clinton knows all of this but she is using the "Karl Rove playbook" and calling her fellow Democrat an "elitist" just to win a primary. That is a shame. Julias Ceaser said it best.

When you go on your rants maybe try to get the facts correct. She said he was using the Rove playbook, when he lied on a Nafta Mailer that had a quote fom her, but it was already proven it wasn't from her. AND he sent out the Harry and Louise Mailer, which the GOP and Medical Companies used in the 90's to scare people.

Also, she Called his comments elitest and they were, you don't tell people they cling to guns and bibles when they are in an econemic depression. And the fact that you attempt to say it is true, just proves you don't know what your talking about. I come from a family of hunters, their econemic status doesn't make them hunt more or less, hell maybe even the opposite, they can't go on trips and afford more arrows etc. when they don't have money. And it's also absurd to suggest that people cling to there faith when they are poor. LIke if they had more money and doing better they would just forget about there faith??? YOU ARE OUT OF TOUCH AND YOUR CANDIDATE IS OUT OF TOUCH. And instead of attempting to understand people who have different beliefs, you attempt to play the (smart people know what he meant) Card. YOu only look like an ignorant elitest when you spout off about shit you have no clue about, and that's why this is a big deal.

Rule 1 in the Rove playbook is to accuse your opponent of things you YOURSELF are guilty of having done. Then, if and when your misbehaviors get exposed, it will seem like revenge and people won't pay any attention.

Rove used this ploy very successfully in tearing down military heroes to obfuscate the cowardice of his boss.

This is EXACTLY what HC is doing when she calls Obama an "elitist" even though when he finished law school he went to work advocating for the poor, and she took a glitzy appointment in Washington and then worked for a union-busting law firm.

Where have you all been? I long ago said here that Hillary was a closet Republican. Why, now she has even poked her nose out of the Republican closet for all to see.

Always have been baffled why some democrats have been so loyal to the Clintons and the DLC.They ridicule others for voting against their own interests but blindly follow people who enacted laws that are opposite of everything they say they stand for.

Hillary continues to try and project all of the yucky things she's doing onto Obama. It's the most ridiculous display of sleight of hand, ever. She's using Karl Rove's playbook and tells everyone Obama is. For instance, she's now tapping into poor white fears and then says Obama looks down on them - that he's elitist. She used the 3am ad, and then got caught lying about sniper fire. I could go on, but my point is that this strategy has gotten really old and pepole can see through it.

Why does Obama act like it is absurd or funny that a father would teach his daughter how to shoot a gun or take her hunting? My father was the one who taught me how to shoot a shotgun when I was a little girl. It is a wonderful memory that I have of me and my father. My brother takes his 13 year old daughter hunting. She is the complete opposite of a tomboy, but she loves to go hunting with her Dad. What is so suppose to be so funny about a father teaching his daughter how to shoot or hunt?

Day 5 (is it?) of the Clinton-orchestrated attack on reason.

Remember when they took lobbyist Penn off the masthead?

Clintons campaign said they would "have a new tone".

This is what they meant.

***************************************************************************
Really? The way I look at it, it's day # 60,225th of the Media's smear machine set up for Hillary and Bill to filter every fart that comes out of their asses, while Bush and Cheney rape the Constitution, bankrupt our economy, take the lives of 4,000 troops unneccesarily, as well as disinfranchise the very people they are trying to "Liberate" by going about it in a more chaotic-shoot-'em-up-cowboy-style than Sadaam ever did. Grow a set Obama, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Oh, you feel bad because Obama walked right into the face of his own shotgun and pulled the trigger? And it's Hillary's fault?! She's pointing out the glaringly obvious.

Jeez, Obamabots really have a tenuous grasp on reality.

You want Democrats to loose in November? Fine put this bozo in charge, but just don't blame Hillary for his loss. His comment in SF has cost him, not Hillary. And it's best the Democrats hear it now, because you don't want Obama's Kerry moment to happen in October.

The notion that Obama will lose the general election based on an out of context comment (that happens to be true) is pure Hillary spin...and if for some absurd reason it could damage him in the general, you're damn right it'd be Hillary's fault. SHE is the one who twisted and spun and repeated it ad nauseum. She and McCain make a great team.

I really don't understand why so many Hillary supporters are convinced she can win in November. She can't even beat Obama in popular vote or delegate count and she's expected to beat John McCain? How many times has she put her foot in her mouth or said something that could be used against her? Way more times than Obama. And I'm sorry if you haven't been reading any other news than what comes out of the Clinton campaign but Hillary is actually taking a lot of flack by harping on this 'elitist' crap. And it's not Hillary's fault for what he said but it is her fault by not letting the thing die, thus hurting our presumptive nominee in the fall (yes, I said it). And of course the Republicans can and probably will bring this up but that's no excuse for Hillary to be doing their dirty work for them.

Talk about disengaged from reality. And you call Obama supporters cultlike? I've never seen a group of people so willing to worship at the altar of a politician that they're unable to sense the glaring similarities between her method of campaigning and the GOP. And now she's talking about how she hunted when she was a girl? After having one of the most anti-gun political careers? Give me a break. I can't trust her.

What, good thing Hillary (R) Clinton finished her extension on her taxes so that she could go swilling "top shelf" while courting the Gun Lobby, reminiscing about the good ole days you went "ducking" with your dad WHILE at a Fox Hunt... 'cuz then that would be elitist of her... Yes?

Q U E S T I O N:
When was the last time Americans could afford to go swilling "top shelf" and/or duck hunt?
Doesn't earning a cool $100 mil. place you in a different "class" (read: Tax bracket) ?

Barack is breaking taboos, and that is powerful stuff. It will be amusing to hear the howls of indignation that his mild comments will elicit from the Vast Great Machine.

Obama has too many ties with people who do not like Israel. They are working against Israel and I am starting to believe that they want to break the bond between America and Israel. Obama is bad news.

We can only hope that Obama, or whomever, will stop funding the anti-democratic, religious state of Israel. Yup. No constitution (they would have to grant equal rights to Muslims); a theocracy (self-evident); launches preemptive wars against civilian populations (too many times to count); land grabbers, in violation of UN sanctions, etc.

Yet we give them billion upon billion. Israel serves no strategic importance, unless you like the illegal arms trade and stolen olives. Cut them off. It is a phony country, and an illegal one.

(And please note I am not anti-Semitic, this is about Israel, NOT Judaism. The fact that any comment that is negative towards Israel is construed as anti-Semitic, only strengthens the points above).

Yes, Clinton is using the GOP playbook and Obama wants it back... Without the book, he has to hope that Karl Rove tells him what to do again via a newsmagazine article. So, please Hillary, give Obama back his book, he needs it.

OK , apparently nothing is getting posted to this thread except arguments. I'm going to try anyway.

Yes, I support Obama as the best (by far) of what choices remain. I do however, have advice for the candidate. There is one way to truly reverse the silliness in PA: if he said he will bring home the troops and also create new jobs rebuilding the sagging infrastructure and make that a serious campaign promise, he will probably win this thing. I know... New Deal...

This is what I think. Goodnight, Huff.

It's truly amazing. I had a VERY open mind before the Democratic candidates even started this campaign. I decided I would look at all the candidates because I thought it was an excellent field, unlike the Republican group which was rancid. But as this campaign unfolded, especially the last couple of months, I have come to a realization. I dislike Hillary Clinton as much as I dislike Dumbya Bu$h. I NEVER thought I would say that about ANY politician. Her gutter campaign tactics, her WHOPPER lies, her husband Bill's race baiting and all the behind the scenes rhetoric to the super delegates has just been enough. Not to mention all the praise she has heeped on McCain while doing this. You know, McCain the REPUBLICAN nominee! Overall, Hillary's campaign led by Mark Penn and Howard Wolfson has been embarrassing.
