SHENANDOAH, Pa. — Yes, some Democrats in Pennsylvania's Rust Belt communities were upset by Barack Obama's suggestion that voters there "cling to guns or religion" because of bitterness about their economic lot. But many more seem to think it was no big deal _ and if there's a problem it's with the political slapfest that has followed.

Obama's comment, which the Illinois senator made during a San Francisco fundraiser last week, set off an exchange of insults between the final contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination as they vie for blue-collar support in the state's April 22 primary. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has criticized the comment as "elitist," while Obama has mocked the New York senator's own recent emphasis on support for gun owners' rights.

In interviews Monday in Pennsylvania communities like the ones to which Obama referred, Democrats on both sides of the race were divided over the controversy.

"It's so difficult to watch every word," said Mary Ellen Matunis, a Clinton backer from Shenandoah.

"I was not offended," she said. "Poor choice of words, but I think it was just misspoken."

Matunis, 56, is a retired teacher in this central Pennsylvania borough of barely 5,000 residents that was once a boom town of the anthracite coal industry. But that industry has been on the decline for longer than most residents have been alive, and the textile factories that followed are gone too.

Dennis Yezulinas, another Clinton supporter in Shenandoah, said he is more offended by the rhetorical fight that followed Obama's comment than by the remark itself.

"Not just for the good of the Democratic Party, but for the good of the country, they need to make it less contentious," said Yezulinas, a former state prison guard who has been laid off from a plant that manufactures doors in a neighboring town.

Story continues below

In the southeastern Pennsylvania community of Coatesville _ a once booming steel city outside of Philadelphia that now has empty storefronts downtown _ two Clinton supporters sharing a meal at a Coatesville restaurant said they felt Obama was wrong to stereotype small-town voters.

"It's like we're not smart enough to understand what the politicians are saying. It's an insult to our intelligence," said Susan Kamerdze, 50.

Mike Zemacke, 57, said that, while Coatesville has seen better days, he's not bitter. He said he used to work as a press operator before a disability led him to retirement.

"I'm just frustrated," he said. "I used to live a lot better than this."

At another Coatesville eatery, lifelong resident Armon Richardson said he remains firmly committed to Obama.

"We're getting in the silly season," said Richardson, 33, a computer analyst. "It's being overanalyzed."

In Pottsville, a city south of Shenandoah that also thrived during the coal boom and is now known as the home of Yuengling beer, coffeehouse owner Mary Ann Price, 56, said she is undecided about which candidate will get her vote in the primary, but that Obama's remarks won't affect her decision. She said she is more concerned about U.S. standing in the international community.

"The whole world hates us, and with good reason," she said.

Mike McGeever, 47, a Clinton backer who works for a neighborhood revitalization agency in Pottsville, called Obama's comment "uninformed, rather than elitist."

"To throw a blanket indictment out there against the people in this area, it is definitely patronizing," he said.

Truck salesman Bob Bildheiser, 49, said he is tentatively supporting Obama and that he agreed with the point that Obama was trying to make about the nation's economic problems.

"The people are bitter about the economy, about jobs, about the gas prices. It's terrible," he said.

At the California event, Obama said some small-town voters bitter about their economic circumstances "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Clinton, who polls show still leading in the Pennsylvania primary, criticized the comment as "elitist and divisive," and suggested that it could cost Democrats the presidency if Obama were the nominee. Obama said he was disappointed by Clinton's criticism and questioned her opposition to the NAFTA free-trade agreement that some voters believe eliminated thousands of U.S. jobs.

This story blows my mind.

Hillary Clinton is charging Barack Obama with being an elitist? Seriously, are you kidding me??

How dumb is the media to jump on the bandwagon and give this story legs?

How fake is Hillary Clinton for painting Barack Obama as an elitist?

How lame is it that with a war going on and serious economic times, the media, and the candidates for that matter, are spending their time talking about who is more like the common man than the next person.

This "dust-up" is exactly why people are bitter. They see politicians acting like toddlers because they are so power hungry and egotistical that they forget that they work for the people of this country, they are our employees.

I hope this nominating process is over as soon as possible because each day there is another example of a politician acting like an A hole.

Why didn't HRC's cackling laugh and "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin" answer to the CAFTA question (Do you think taking $800,000 from the Columbian government and then coming out as being against Columbian trade is a conflict of interest?) not get as much air time as this truthful answer . Why?

Hillary is bitter and is clinging to her battle with her multiple personalities.

As usual, this morning, Biillary and Hillary fought over what to wear. Hillary is becoming increasingly aware that she hardly resembles a lady anymore and want to ditch the pantsuits for a dress. Her argument with Billary is that if she is to be the first woman president, then she needs to give up her quest to be a man. Billary doesn't buy the argument. Counter pointing instead with the logic that Americans indeed would prefer a wannabe man for president instead of a man or a woman.

Billary has led the personalities to embrace an unnatural affection to all things gun related, i.e., sniper fire and early memories of firing a gun at age 6 with pee paw.

This bitter battle amongst HRC's multiple personalities threatens to tear Hillary apart. HRC advisers warn her that if this battle continues, it will split her base apart and make it impossible for HRC to continue through the month of May.

Rejecting reconcilliation with her selves, HRC responded by accusing Billary of having an affair with Bill.

Be very scared is the advice that Sillary, HRC's other personality advises. Xeroxing directly from the GOP Swiftboating Manual, Sillary is persistent that spreading fear is the way to win the White House.

It wouldn't be the first time H.P. lies for Obsnob:

Who will you vote for in the Pennsylvania primary? ( todays votes from Penn. tv station: )

Hillary Clinton 53%

Barack Obama 40%

Obsnob is going to get his butt kicked in PA and across most of the rest of the states.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:48 AM on 04/15/2008

Are you really a Democrat? What is more important to you, achieving real healthcare reform or slicing another Democrat and hoping that somehow your preferred candidate (who is not building her own reputation in this) comes out of this fracas with 65% of the vote in Pennsylvania?

I am very curious about this. Since Democrats are apparently raging against Democrats and you are certainly raging against Senator Obama, whom you have derogatorily called "Obsnob", what matters more to you? The economy, education, healthcare reform, getting out of Iraq, the appointment of 2-4 Supreme Court Justices, or simply making certain that under no circumstances does Senator Obama become the next President?

It seems to me that you are supporting the latter idea. Since there is an extremely high probability that Senator Obama will be the nomnee, do you believe this is the right course for a Democrat right now? Why not try to build up your preferred candidate?

If you are a neo-con or a self-labelled "ditto-head", there is no need to respond to my comment.
If you are a Republican that simply disagrees philosophically with everything the Democratic party stands for, there is no need to respond to my comment.

I whole heartedly support Senator Obama, and I am confident that he does not engage in the politics of personal destruction. His supporters should not either. Lets take our tone from him and keep the diginified and clean campaign going. I will work, for his time is NOW.

Bravo Bravo - I'm standing and giving you a personal round of applause. You are absolutely on the money - and that has been the timbre of his campaign. Unfortunately in order to prove that point, Obama had to accept Powers' resignation - which was indeed sad.

Sarcasm and parody are on the table and they don't have to be disgusting or profanity riddled in order to be effective tools.

I'm glad you wrote what you did.

Well, the polls are not the surest way to figure out what's going on, but SurveyUSA just released their poll and show her up by 14 points in Penn and 16 in Indiana.

Obama is holding a 20 point lead in NC.

None of those polls seems reliable, even the NC one. I think the critical undecideds are still undecided. Luckily, we only have a week left of this long interlude. Obama was right about one thing: this campaign really is like the Bataan Death March.

It's amusing to see the consistently pro-Obama Huffingtonpost do everything it can to make it up to Obama for breaking this story....someone at the Obama camp must have really given it out to you guys. You can't seem to find enough articles with provocative headlines trying to deflect the story from the fact that Obama's quote was, in fact, terribly elitist. "Many more Pennsylvanians" weren't offended? I'm sorry, do you have any polling data on that or you relying on anecdotal evidence? If you still think Obama is a stronger candidate int he general (or ever was) you must of drank a lot of the kool-aid.

Why is everyone so surprised and shocked, Lou Dobbs rails on this issue every night? What ever Bill Clinton did in the 90’s, worked, the rich got richer, and the economy grew 22.6 million jobs, yet the MSM was more concerned with Bill’s blow job than anything else. No one was complaining about illegal immigration or crying out for tax cuts. My niece grew up in Ohio, she drives backed from time to time to see college friends and comes back increasly depressed at the Ohio’s state of decline.

The small Republican run town I grew up in, re-assessed property taxes based on inflated home values, now people cannot keep their homes. Being a lake resort area, multi million dollar mansions are increasing dotting the lakeshore and 38’ off shore high performance boats are becoming a common site on the water. My neighbor and friend, a Republican was boasting one day that the mansions sprouting up would raze the value of his humble modular 3-bedroom cape on a 50X100 lake front lot. My answer was be careful what you wish for. His taxes went from $1,800 to 5,800 a year. These are decent people, I’ve known all my life, but it’s pretty tough when your getting hammered with increased property taxes, energy and food cost and the Fed shifts tax revenues away from the states to cut taxes for the guy who can afford a $500.000 Cigarette boat and the fuel to run it.

(Not to worry--none of these people will ever learn the folly of charging into a debate red-faced. Bombast is what it's all about for them, and it's why we have so much fun riling them. Insert fish-in-a-pond metaphor.)

It was an intelligent explanation of how the GOP won the last election. It wasn't intended for a large group. It would have bored the average person to hear this. I'm convinced there's not a lot of intelligent supporters of hillary. I mean all of this anger and outrage because (drumroll)...."some people in small towns are NOT bitter over jobs going overseas, forecloser's, high gas prices, rising food cost, etc".

Obama definately used the wrong words but I think all of this "outrage" over what he said a overboard. I'm happy to see some people in PA are so resiliant that they are still happy.

I don't need to analyze the validity of his comment, because I am just pointing out that the issue is NOT whether people are bitter. The issue is not over wedge politics. Both he and you are trying to distract the dialouge away from real issue by focusing on the validity of his comments.

The real issue is what he said people do with their bitterness, not whetehr there is any validity that peopel are bitter or that there is wedge politics. Saying people "cling" to anything suggests helplessness and mindlessness to some.

I don't care and don't judge him, but don't try to distract from the real point by saying what he said is true. It doesn't matter if it's true.
