SHENANDOAH, Pa. — Yes, some Democrats in Pennsylvania's Rust Belt communities were upset by Barack Obama's suggestion that voters there "cling to guns or religion" because of bitterness about their economic lot. But many more seem to think it was no big deal _ and if there's a problem it's with the political slapfest that has followed.

Obama's comment, which the Illinois senator made during a San Francisco fundraiser last week, set off an exchange of insults between the final contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination as they vie for blue-collar support in the state's April 22 primary. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has criticized the comment as "elitist," while Obama has mocked the New York senator's own recent emphasis on support for gun owners' rights.

In interviews Monday in Pennsylvania communities like the ones to which Obama referred, Democrats on both sides of the race were divided over the controversy.

"It's so difficult to watch every word," said Mary Ellen Matunis, a Clinton backer from Shenandoah.

"I was not offended," she said. "Poor choice of words, but I think it was just misspoken."

Matunis, 56, is a retired teacher in this central Pennsylvania borough of barely 5,000 residents that was once a boom town of the anthracite coal industry. But that industry has been on the decline for longer than most residents have been alive, and the textile factories that followed are gone too.

Dennis Yezulinas, another Clinton supporter in Shenandoah, said he is more offended by the rhetorical fight that followed Obama's comment than by the remark itself.

"Not just for the good of the Democratic Party, but for the good of the country, they need to make it less contentious," said Yezulinas, a former state prison guard who has been laid off from a plant that manufactures doors in a neighboring town.

Story continues below

In the southeastern Pennsylvania community of Coatesville _ a once booming steel city outside of Philadelphia that now has empty storefronts downtown _ two Clinton supporters sharing a meal at a Coatesville restaurant said they felt Obama was wrong to stereotype small-town voters.

"It's like we're not smart enough to understand what the politicians are saying. It's an insult to our intelligence," said Susan Kamerdze, 50.

Mike Zemacke, 57, said that, while Coatesville has seen better days, he's not bitter. He said he used to work as a press operator before a disability led him to retirement.

"I'm just frustrated," he said. "I used to live a lot better than this."

At another Coatesville eatery, lifelong resident Armon Richardson said he remains firmly committed to Obama.

"We're getting in the silly season," said Richardson, 33, a computer analyst. "It's being overanalyzed."

In Pottsville, a city south of Shenandoah that also thrived during the coal boom and is now known as the home of Yuengling beer, coffeehouse owner Mary Ann Price, 56, said she is undecided about which candidate will get her vote in the primary, but that Obama's remarks won't affect her decision. She said she is more concerned about U.S. standing in the international community.

"The whole world hates us, and with good reason," she said.

Mike McGeever, 47, a Clinton backer who works for a neighborhood revitalization agency in Pottsville, called Obama's comment "uninformed, rather than elitist."

"To throw a blanket indictment out there against the people in this area, it is definitely patronizing," he said.

Truck salesman Bob Bildheiser, 49, said he is tentatively supporting Obama and that he agreed with the point that Obama was trying to make about the nation's economic problems.

"The people are bitter about the economy, about jobs, about the gas prices. It's terrible," he said.

At the California event, Obama said some small-town voters bitter about their economic circumstances "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Clinton, who polls show still leading in the Pennsylvania primary, criticized the comment as "elitist and divisive," and suggested that it could cost Democrats the presidency if Obama were the nominee. Obama said he was disappointed by Clinton's criticism and questioned her opposition to the NAFTA free-trade agreement that some voters believe eliminated thousands of U.S. jobs.

But But Billary said that "everyone" in Pennsylvania is upset by this, maybe it's just Billary feeling desperate and the CNN Clinton News Network and all the other media outlets doing their "star journalisim" stuff.

If she knee caps Obama and wins the Nomination, this long standing, 50 something, female Democrat would not vote for her and maybe vote for McCain. Not out of revenge, but because she is more dangerous than McCain, if that's possible. She is delusional and incompetent..

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:58 AM on 04/15/2008

This is highly unlikely. If Senator Clinton actually achieved the lead in the pledged delegates, she would have a shot of winning in November, but she would need 65% of the vote in Pennsylvania, Indiana and North Carolina and 64% in the remaining contests to do so.

Should Senator Clinton fail to do this and instead manage to get 78%-80% of the superdelegates to throw the pledged delegate lead (and millions of Democratic voters) under the bus, she will not win in November and we will get 4 more years-- at least, we have some chance, under Senator McCain, that it won't be quite so corrupt as the last 7+ years, but it will still be incompetent (since his mindset is firmly rooted in the last century) and sadly, horrifically, pathetic (I do believe we would invade Iran and maybe Syria).

Most people have had their preferred candidate fail to secure the nomination and they still vote Democratic in November. But, this case would be different -- Senator Obama would have earned the nomination, but supers would take it away. Senator Obama's supporters (millions of them) would feel as disenfranchised as many felt after the Florida recount was stopped. Many would stay home in November -- and this would also hurt Democrats down-ticket. Most who did vote would not cast a ballot for Senator Clinton.

If you truly are a Democrat, I urge you to think about the consequences of the overturn the will of the actual voters strategy.

Of course Obama was speaking the truth. Again.

Now Hillary has cut a campaign commercial trying to exploit this for all it's worth. Typical Hillary. Only problem is there are a lot of people that are upset and do want to change the usual Washington merry-go-round.

This is going to backfire on Hillary. Oh well, Barack will be there to pick her up of the mat, the gentlemman that he is.;)

The truth? so you really believe that people of faith cling to their religion out of bitterness, and that the only reason why these poor working class sops in Pennsylvania don't support him is because their so economically depressed that they turn racist and take their frustrations out on "people who are different" from them? Yep. He speaketh the truth - poor people are all bitter racists or just aren't enlightened enough to see that Obama is, in fact, the messiah.

Or maybe their smart enough to realize that he has absolutely no record of doing anything for working class families.

Yes, the "truth is the truth" and in this instance, Senator Clinton is out-republican-ing Senator McCain in a desperate attempt to save her candidacy.

My parents were both born and raised in rural America and they had no problem with Senator Obama's statement. They are thoroughly aggravated by the way the MSM continually insults rural America and working America, however. This is also a truth, anecdotal, but still a truth. Senator Obama spit on no-one and your mischaracterization is unbelievable coming from a Democrat. Are you really a Democrat? Right now, you don't sound like one.

So many of us have directed our comments to those (i.e. Mediahack-) to EXPLAIN the other side- not make excuses (like misspeaking re:Bosnia)
but i will repeat others and myself for those who can be more open, stand back and try to view an issue from a slightly different view point--
This "bitter" issue is pure SPIN and MANIPULATION-- haven't WE THE PEOPLE had enough of this nonsense-- We have endured 8 years of an ILLEGAL president and his ILLEGAL policies and WAR- It has left us cynical, distrusting and in great need of fundamental change in this country-- we need to regain our soul as a country.
Clinton will be a continuation of division and politics as usual--that's a fact we all know!!
I repeat--
Obama admittedly used "clumsy" wording ("bitter" did not invoke the intended connotation) in linking economics to sentiments re:cultural issues.
In describing the problems in economically depressed rural and urban areas, people are frustrated and feel abandoned by their government and instead of the good working people who have lost jobs and livelihood mobilizing around economic issues and voting in blocks to change their economic plight, they are manipulated by the political process (politicians) to redirect their energy and concerns toward cultural issues (Wedge issues) that they (respectfully) care about but unfortunately will not change their economic condition.
The good people of Cal. were not laughing at the good people of Pa.--stop the propaganda!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:59 AM on 04/15/2008

Poor un-enlightened poor people! They are just so poor and stupid that they let themselves be so easily manipulated by politicians to do crazy things...like...go to Church, and legally own guns, and get worried that illegal immigrants are competing with them in the job market!

they should just forget about their faith and all that baloney and move to San Fran and drink a couple lattes, then they'll see the light and become Obama supporters.

Here's to the next sociologist in chief!

You are sadly misguided in your thinking-- in fact you sound angry and resigned--
Are you patronizing the people of SF who drink lattes?? and that's ok ?
WHO said the people of Pa. are stupid?? Quite the contrary!!!
We are all manipulated by the media-- i just attended a forum with media giants who admitted to the real driving force in journalism-- MONEY and POWER-- they are victims of the same system we are.
Media determines what and how we think about issues-- YES WE ARE ALL MANIPULATED!
We were also manipulated by the tactics of Rove et al and now the Clinton Machine is using similiar tactics--it's repulsive!
We have to recognize that this Manipulation in politics exists before we can actively reject it-- it's not in our best interest to pretend it doesn't pervade our politics.
Obama was defending and honoring the people of Pa.-- -- Obama is a man of faith! His life story is one of helping working people. He was trying to explain why working people who have been ignored for a long time vote against their economic best interests!

You are a "progressive" and you are using that age-old Republican knock at San Franciscans? Really? Do you know how happy you are making the Republican machine with comments like that? This is the one hope, the highest dream of the Republican machine right now -- that all of their twisty language is embraced by one side of this debate and that all of those folks vote solidly Republican in November.
Will you be one of those people in November, "ProgressiveJ"?

Perhaps it is time to rid ourselves of the Republican play-book. Perhaps it is time to stop ridiculing those who live in San Francisco (poor and working class people live there too, you know), New York City and the other places Republicans love to criticize in hopes of gaining votes elsewhere. Perhaps Senator Obama is right and we need to come together as a people rather than attacking each other based on where we live.

Everyone has a right to support the candidate they prefer. But it is appalling that Democrats are now sounding so similar to Republican talking-heads! If you really are a Republican, just pretending, I withdraw my comment. Obviously, this is exactly what any Republican wants right now.

Why don't you let people decide for themselves what Obama said or meant. I don't know if you read your post before you hit enter, but it sounds a bit patronizing. You probably didn't mean it that way.

Maybe you also shouldn't put down people from San Francisco. There are nice people everywhere.

EXACTLY - I come from a small town and my family talked about these remarks. My dad said that using the word "cling" was probably a mistake but we understood what Barack's intent was, we totally ignored Lou Dobbs, and think Barack was dead on.

It is nice to see a lot of PA people get it. I am not saying that everyone should vote for Barack or Hillary. But to let these comments influence your decision is just wrong and in some cases it shows a propensity to be influenced by politicians trying to get a cheap shot in.

The pundits on Cable TV News are eating their hats. The "clinging to guns and religion” remark wasn't supposed to make any difference, they said.
Check out CNN transcripts - Situation Room Friday night, when the story broke.
Wolf Blizter asks the best political team on TV what they think of the reaction to Barrick's comments:

BLITZER: All right. Jeff, what do you think?
TOOBIN: I think that is so ridiculous.
CAFFERTY: I agree.
TOOBIN: I mean that is not at all what Barack Obama said.
BORGER: Right.
TOOBIN: I mean I just think this is an example of how a campaign between the two of them can be purely destructive and not elevate either candidate. I mean Hillary Clinton is clearly distorting what Obama said. And, by the way, what Obama said is factually accurate.
CAFFERTY: Right.
TOOBIN: It's been true throughout history that people who have economic problems lash out against various others. I just think it is embarrassing for the Clinton campaign just to hang on to this as if its some sort of gaffe.

check the polls one has Hillary up by 6 the other up by 3... and everyone knows ARG doesn't count it's a robot poll (automated calls) Much to your dismay this may actually work in his favor, the American people that you pretend to know so well are much smarter then you give them credit for. You are talking down to people trying to convince them of how they should react to something. It;s an INDIVIDUAL choice pal, and we can all see what your point of view is.

But in any case, the numbers are really all over the map. The only thing that was interesting about the ARG poll was that it showed a 20 point swing.

this is nonsense. hillary isn't distorting what he said at all! and sorry, but it's not "true." working class people don't cling to guns or religion because they are poor and bitter. the problem with the media in this case is that they're all more elitist than Obama is.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:45 AM on 04/15/2008

Actually, every where on this planet, when hard times come people do cling to what is good in their lives. The term "elitist" is something used by Republicans to twist reality so that someone like President Bush (who is an elite, if anyone is-- Andover! And not part of the elite, come on!) is a "regular guy." Similarily, you are assisting these same Republicans in their drive to define Senator Obama (the only candidate still in this race who actually had a childhood that contained economic struggle) as an "elite."

Senator Obama is "elite" when it comes to intelligence, thank God. Senator Obama is "elite" when it comes to communication skills, even though his word choices (like every other person living) are not always perfect. Senator Obama is "elite" when it comes to political skills like fundraising and organization.

Senator Obama is not "elite" when it comes to wealth. He recently finished paying off his student loans from college and law school. His net worth is tied up 80%-90% in his home like most other American homeowners. Senator Obama is not "elite" when it comes to connections, for his family had none. Do think before you spin republican talking-points (and ask your preferred candidate to do the same) unless you are a Republican just pretending and then obviously I withdraw my request because it is nonsensical to ask a Republican to stop using Republican talking-points..

It's surprising that voters in Pennsylvania and elsewhere are not more bitter and more angry than they already are. After eight years of neo-con policies that have devastated their lives and sent their sons and daughters off to die in a war based on lies and hidden agendas, voters have every right to be bitter and angry.

I beg to differ! Nobody was upset by what Obama said.

People were upset by the spin put on it by Clinton and the media.
The same media has given us all the Neocon program.
But Clinton doesn't think that that made any of us bitter!
I wonder why this issue(?) keeps spinning. Why aren't we talking about real economic issues? Could it be that the Clintons and the media don't want us to think about them?
http://www.publicintegrity.org/clintonwalmart
And the war?
http://www.cnn.com/2006??POLITICS/01/20/ivins.hillary/index.html
What about our values? Torture?
Why isn't the war a huge issue? Could it be that that doesn't help the Clintons and McCain?

Nobody was upset??????? Are you smoking Obamas stuff???

April 14, 2008

Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters nationwide disagree with Barack Obama’s statement that people in small towns “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." A Rasmussen Reports survey found that just 25% agree with the Democratic front runner while 19% are not sure.

Let me say this much...

In 1984, on the night before the April 10th Primary, Gary Hart came to speak at Oxford Valley Mall.
There were about 2,000 folks there and he won the next day by roughly 2,000 votes and won 3 out of the 4 possible delegates...

This was done with virtually hardly any money...on a shoestring!

Today, President Bill Clinton will be in Quakertown and Hillary has been here twice already..just here in Bucks County.

Newly elected Congressman Patrick Murphy came out for Obama last August.

If Obama wins Bucks...Hillary has real problems.

I would rather expect though that Hillary will win Bucks.

I personally know of two families living here in Europe whose jobs have been outsourced by the "Clinton NAFTA" plan that are going home to Pennsylvania to campaign for Obama.

I guess this is what one would call "first hand experience with the Clinton record". These families are spending part of their vacation time to change America ... what is your excuse?

Obama supporters seem to think the best strategy is to say "It's true ! We are bitter!"
But that's not what Americans want to hear.
For those of you who can remember, Jimmy Carter's "Malaise" speech did not go over very well.
Obama's amateur pop sociology explanation of why some working-class Americans are not yet supporting him will sink his campaign.
Here's why:
Over the next days and weeks, Americans in Pennsylvania, Indiana and North Carolina will see the video ( Clinton attack ads) of wealthy Obama supporters chortling over clinking champagne glasses, as Obama explains why working class Americans are not smart enough to support him.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0408/Video_from_San_Francisco.html

Watch the video clip. What are they laughing at ? What’s so funny?

Media,

Yes laughing. How could they? What's so humorous? Hmmmm.

And then they chortled you say? Egads! What next? Guffaws?

Do you have any notion how ridiculous you sound?

So I gather wealthy Clinton supporters are okay but not wealthy Obama supporters?

Illogical and preposterous.

They will also see clips of Hillary tossing back shots with men and claiming how her grandfather taught her to shoot.

While HRC might trying to prove what a "downhome gal" she is--she's lost bigtime cred with her feminist following for trying to play a mans' game instead of being herself..
It's called pandering and it's called smearing.

HRC knows she has no cred in light of recent stories of everything she's made up recently (Bosnia, Nafta, tax returns,.....) so she accuses Sen. Obama of what she knows she herself is guilty of: elitism.

Elitism is when you think you are superior to someone else..In this case she's trying to make herself believable as being "regular"-though her ties to big biz, her income 109 mil-refute that.
In addition to not only trying to act regular-she again "acts" as if she is an authority of what middle and lower-class voters SHOULD think about Obama-rather than letting them think or respecting them to think for themselves...

WRONG. Elitism is not having money or success it is turning your nose down on people that are not like you....like obama and his san fran friends did.

Oh well it's to be expected from a campaign that will sink to anything to destroy the dem. party just so their candidate can win. We know you like to put fear in the minds of the elderly, and uneducated. Shame on you.

Again if you missed it: Sen. McCain and Sen. Clinton are politicians. By definition means a person experienced in the art or science of government; esp one actively conducting the business of the government; a person engaged in party politics as a profession; a person primarily interested in political offices from selfish or other narrow usu.short- run interests. Whereas, Sen. Obama is a statesman. By definition is on versed in the principles or art of a government; esp: one actively engaged in conducting the business of the government or in shaping its policies; one who exercise political leadership wisely and without partisanship.

Now America which would you prefer one who seeks self interest or narrow short -run intersts, which serves the purpose of candidate ; or would you prefer one who exercise political leadership wisely and without partisanship ( not afraid to tell the truth and pander to a select few, but sees beyond divisive issues and deals with issues facing us all). A politician will say what they think people want to hear, whereas, a statesmen will ttell he truth. It is time for American politics to grow-up and face the real plight of the majority of Americans.

I was born in Shenandoah! What a shock to see the location. I moved away when I was a kid but my grandparents lived there until their death. I went back a few years ago and was shocked. It was like time had stopped somewhere in the 1950's. There really isn't anything in towns like Shenandoah so their life does revolve around church activities and as with many places in Pennsylvania, the first day of deer season is like a holiday. Although I do wonder how much hunting actually gets done at hunting camp. When I was a kid there was a bar on just about every corner with a church on the opposite corner. And they were open on Sundays - just go to the back door and knock (my grandfather used to do that).

BTW, Shenandoah is only a few miles from Hazleton. You remember that Hazleton became famous for their laws regarding immigration.

The towns are dying because of Clinton and Bush policies! That is what is so disgusting about Hillary's campaign in these states. She pretends to feel for them, when she promoted the agreement that took their jobs!! Tragic.

How come the media isn't focused on the fact that Hillary's top advisor is the CEO of a lobbying company that was working on behalf of the agreement? That her husband made $800,000 promoting the agreement. That her advisor also represents Haliburton and Blackwater...and this advisor has been with her for 9 years (before Iraq vote!). Come on people!

How dare you link the Clinton admin to Bu$h travesty! That's a very big mistake and one Obama made in the BITTER speech too. The Clinton years are marked with economic prosperity. Unemployment went from 8% Bush #1 to under 5%. Unemployment for AA's went from 14% under Bu$h #1 to under 7%. Clinton did amazing things for the poor. To lump Bu$h with Clinton is a dishonesty. Unforgivable.

come on people......nobody in PA is bitter about the outsourcing of their jobs. They're all happy and well adjusted because the economy is not as important as single voting issues.......vote for hillary and she will make PA even happier once the columbian deal goes through.....I can just see all the happy faces of the people in PA who are outraged towards Obama.

When this is all said and done (win or lose), I'm really interested in seeing how Senator Clinton will redeem herself. Will she recant her various statements degrading Barack Obama (who will be either the Democratic nominee or an important young senator in the future of the party) and support him in the future? How does she come back from this with any dignity?

I am in marketing and the creative team must of worked all night to get that ad out. My experience tells me that those plain folk in the add work for the Clinton campaign, or were hired actors, becasue it would just be impossible to find a cross section of just plain people, intervew them and get them to memorize a script that quickly. I just don't buy it.

The words Obama spoke might have been harsh ...but sadly true. People who have seen their jobs outsourced can't help but blame the supporters of NAFTA and other trade deals that give give incentives to companies to relocate where labor is cheaper. Of course they are bitter because they can't understand how a government that is supposed to support it's workers uncuts them. This is why there has been up until this year such apathy on behalf of the average person and voting. Many see it as an excercise in futulity. As Obama has said it's time to re-claim our country and hold those in Washington accountable.
