Scientology

A former Scientologist has left the controversial church of Tom Cruise and is speaking out on YouTube. Jason Beghe is the real-life best fried of David Duchovny, he played Demi Moore's love interest in "G.I. Jane" and has appeared on shows like "Criminal Minds," "Numb3rs" and "CSI."

As Foxnews reports about the Jason Beghe video:

In 2005, Beghe appeared in promotional spots for the Church of Scientology. But now Beghe has escaped the church after taking courses since 1994. He's made a video that's up on YouTube.

This is what he has to say: "Scientology is destructive and a rip-off." He also says: "It's very, very dangerous for your spiritual, psychological, mental, emotional health and evolution. I think it stunts your evolution. If Scientology is real, then something's f----ed up."

You can see from the video that Beghe does not mince words. But his refreshing candor about the religion he joined in 1994 should shake the Celebrity Center to its core. "It ain't deliverin' what it's promised. It sure has not."

The video is billed as a three-minute teaser to a longer interview with Beghe that's on its way. But the short video packs a powerful punch. Beghe still uses a lot of Scientology lingo like "OT" and "clear." Still, it's quite easy to understand the point he's making. After 14 years and a tremendous amount of money, he's seeing Scientology in a different light.

Beghe has completed so many courses that he's considered a top Scientologist, or "OT 5" -- similar to Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Alley. But Beghe reveals: "The further up the bridge, the worse you get."

It's a shame that people don't feel comfortable enough to worship on their own, or in small groups. This giving all your damned, hard-earned money to these damned churches is just outrageous and scanalous. They can kiss my ass. I will do my spiritual thing on my own, without the help of these thieves.

What scares me most about Scientology is the way they go after seriously mentally ill people and try to convince them to abandon therapy and medication. That's a very dangerous thing to do, and one day it could really blow up in someone's face.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:26 AM on 04/15/2008

That's by design. they are easy targets, and once you get them off thier meds and start to manipulate them with "anti therapy", you have an easily controllable source of income. they are plentiful, though, and after one melts down or comes to their senses, there are MANY others waiting to be ripped off and sucked dry emotionally.

What better place to recruit mentally ill people than the Tv and film industry in L.A? How many British, Italian or French film/TV people sign up (well, other than the ones in LA trying to suck up and make it there, maybe?)

I was born and raised into Scientology and know that not everything about the religion is perfect.

Correct that...I think the religion itself is very powerful and successful...however, I think the way that some individuals practice it and interpret it is wrong, but that's the same as in every religion.

I am very happy in Scientology and so are all my friends that are in it and trying to improve their lives. I feel bad for Jason and I am on his side, I feel that if he paid his money and the Church didn't deliver, then they should be held accountable, they should do everything in their power to ensure that he gets what he paid for and if not he should receive a full refund.

I know many people that have gone "Clear" and are "OT" and they are happy and successful and lead great lives. It's sad that he didn't achieve the same success that these people did.

No matter what anyone thinks of the Church, if you don't believe in it or want to do it, or even question it as a religion, the fact is many people are happy in it and enjoying life. You should be happy that people are at least happy with something, what does it matter to you? It's making people happy! This planet needs happiness, let people be happy whether it be from Scientology or buying a milk shake.

It is unfortunate that you don't have the perspective that Jason does, which is what it is like to be "in" and they to be "out" again.

You should try it -- I (and many many others) recommend it. The Wog World ($cientologeeze for a non-$cientologist) is not all that it is portrayed to be from within the Cult.

Leave, you can do it, and still be happy, successful and helpful to the rest of humanity. Stop worrying about future lives which may or may not happen.

Jason seems pretty upset and worked up, not only about Scientology, but about life as well...he sounds pretty angry at the world, why is it unfortunate that I don't have the perspective that Jason has?? Why in the world would I want to be as miserable as him?

For as many people that recommend being "out" of it, I can find just as many people that would recommend being "in" it. So that really doesn't make sense.

As for being happy and successful and being able to help the rest of humanity, I am very thankful that Scientology has assisted me in that achievement. Why would I turn my back on something that has given me so much happiness, the way you would never turn your back on something that gives you happiness.

This could be a fun debate, but as much as it pains most of you, the people that are doing Scientology and are still "in" it, are very happy. Sorry to put a damper on your day.

"I feel that if he paid his money and the Church didn't deliver, then they should be held accountable"

Really? You can honestly say that without shame? WHAT kind of "Church" takes money in exchange for salvation or whatever you wingbats call it.

Scientoglogy is as much a Cult as the Branch Davidians. CRAZY!!!!

Uggg, I probably shouldn't have thrown myself into the fray by being the only Scientologist representative on Huff...but I guess I have a few minutes.

Church rules state that if an individual is unhappy with his services he/she can get an entire refund. It's absolutely true...go into the Church, sign up for something, then get your money back, I am sure they'd gladly hand it back to you and send you off on your merry way.

I'm not sure you could compare Scientology to the Branch Davidians...but you can compare it to some other religions that need an extended sense of belief...how about believing that your savior died and 'came back to life'...or that a star led 3 wise men to find the 'child of god'...those sound like fairy tales to me as much as my religion might sound weird to you.

I have no personal experience with Scientology. But as I understand it, it is a science fiction religion that worships Overlord of the Universe Xenu.

So this makes you happy? OK man, whatever. BUT it is NOT TRUTH.

As I understand it, Jewish babies get the foreskin of their penis cut off to become a part of the covenant with God.

Catholics believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins...I never met this dude in my life.

Buddhists believe that you have to sit and meditate to achieve the state of Nirvana.

Muslims believe you can't eat pork and if you die in battle you go to heaven and yada yada yada.

Are those all truths??

Fact of the matter is, this is 2008, more people have been killed in the name of God and religion and faith than for any other cause in the history of man. You'd think that by now people would just let people live their lives and believe their beliefs without danger of retribution or consequence.

In America, our country that was founded on the ability to have the right to believe in any religion or God as you choose, should be the last place that someone shouldn't be allowed to practice their religion.

If they give all his money back, then that man can at least afford a good psychiatrist.

I'm not knocking Scientology. People can believe in anything they want to as long as it keeps them off the streets.

Scientology, Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, Mormonism, Hinduism........NO DIFFERENCE. It's all pablam for the weakminded.

I've recently read this anectote about religion:

In a conversation with a Christian (could have been a Jew, a Muslim, etc.), a man made this statement to the Christian. "I only believe in one less god than you do. When you determine why you've rejected all the other possible gods you will then understand why I reject yours.

If you believe the lies and fairy tales from any or all these organizations you are their lawful prey.

Well put. If there are 1000 religions, and a person discards 999 of them as lies so that they may view their own as "the truth", what's so unreasonable about another person like me rejecting all 1000 as lies?

There is a BIG difference between a religion based on fairy tale and myth, and one based upon a pyramid scheme of bait and switch. For more depth on the 1st category, read Joseph Campbell. The second (represented by groups like EST, The Family, The Moonies and Scientology) a form of criminal conspiracy and deserves a RICO prosecution.

IRS should step in and then maybe we'd be rid off all this nonsense.

Get your facts straight. The Criminal Cult of $cientology is, as a matter of fact, recognized by the IRS as a "religion." See http://www.sc-i-r-s-ology.pair.com/scientologyreligion.html & also this, http://www.factnet.org/headlines/give-away.htm, and this: http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1101136522270 .

In "auditing", Scientology charges huge amounts of money to hook the
indoctrinees up to a crude resistor-based bridge ohmmeter and ask bizarre
questions about what supposedly happened to them millions, billions or even
trillions of years ago on this and other planets. This "treatment" (also
called "metering" by the cult) is supposed to cure all manner of ailments,
both physical and psychological, for astronomical prices. The total cost of
going from "raw meat", as the cult disparagingly calls the public, to "OT-8"
is estimated to cost over 250,000.00$ US. The cult also uses another form of
this "auditing" process, called "security-checking" to obtain very personal
information about the follower's sex lives and criminal history (if any),
which is then used for security purposes as potential blackmail to keep people
quiet about the illegal activities of the cult should they ever escape its
semantic entrapment long enough to resume their former lives.

The litigious nature of the cult of Scientology is well
known and reported in the literature on this dangerous cultic phenomenon.
Scientologists have, as one of their basic policies, the destruction of anyone
who is perceived by this paranoid schizophrenic organization as being an
"enemy", and baseless lawsuits, sometimes involving frames, are used for this
purpose. An enemy is anyone who, in the eyes of the cult, denigrates the cult
in any way; thus critics are subject to multitudes of frivolous lawsuits,
threats, strong-arm tactics, and outright physical attacks.

A mainstay of the cult's writings are based upon a kind of pseudo-science
that gives one the clear impression that it is the 1930's. Many of these
writings talk down to their audience as if they were wholly ignorant of basic
facts about geology, biology, medicine, and other branches of general knowledge
and science. The lamentable truth is that the cult's brainwashed victims are
actually willing to defend these bits of fantasy as established scientific
fact, against all reason and logic; one such delusion is "auditing".

from alt.religion.scientology

Based on science fiction and fantasy, the cult's teachings are little more
than a thinly concealed attempt at making huge sums of money for the people at
the top of the cult. Near the end of his life, Ronald Hubbard was reported
to be making as much as one million dollars per week. Hubbard is documented
as having said that the best way to make a lot of money is to invent a
religion, and that is exactly what he did with the cult of Scientology.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:28 AM on 04/15/2008

Scientology has evolved its own language that is little more than
meaningless, incomprehensible ravings to rational, educated minds. This
newspeak is a form of semantic control, used by the church to extract profit,
either in money or personnel resources from its hapless, brainwashed victims
and to serve PR functions to fool the public. Scientology is a totalitarian
and fascist system that sees freedom of speech as an arch enemy, and freedom
of thought as a personal attack, deserving of every means to stop it dead,
sometimes literally. An example of this newspeak is the unfounded claim by
the cult to be a "church"; Scientology is a cult, not a church.

From alt.religion.scientology

Scientology is a dangerous, mindbending cult that was established in the
1950's by Lafayette Ronald Hubbard and presents a grave threat to the concepts
and tenets of freedom and democracy. Scientology has, as its basic purpose,
the destruction of freedom and the erosion of human rights on the way to
making money; it uses any means possible to achieve this end, including legal
harassment, verbal and physical threats, hiding under the cover of "religion",
and thought reform so complete that to talk to anyone brainwashed by the cult
is to talk to little more than the mouthed platitudes of mechanical zombies.

I seem to remember that the book on Scientology that ol' L Ron wrote was a Sci Fi manuscript he couldn't get published... but I may be getting it confused with the Book of Mormon. As I think about it, I've read some Sci Fi of Hubbard's and it's pretty bad, (he had to self-publish). Maybe both religions were started by failed fiction.authors..

I was hitchhiking and on the street road a lot when I was in my teens. (60's) I remember very distinctly that the Scientology wackos were people to stay away from at all costs. One time, my traveling partner stopped to listen to them on the sidewalk in downtown SF. They immediately separated us- took him inside & kept me out unless I wanted to 'learn', too.

After 20-30 & no Art, I went after him. It took seriously threatening to kick some ass & pushing and shoving while yelling his name at the top of my lungs before I got him away from the cult-ers.

He told me it was a scary experience, They immediately surrounded this 16 year old kid with 4 or 5 young adults simultaneously shouting at him, "He's a negative influence, you need to 'let him go away'." Some were also asking him if his family had money,.

Ask anybody who, as a teen, hitchhiked in the late '60's & early '70's, they'll have a Scientology story or heard a warning. It was common knowledge.

Scientology is a joke. All you need to do is watch the South Park Scientology episode, which is actually a pretty accurate documentary. Anyone who's ever spent any time in Clearwater ,FL (I live nearby) sees the detrimental effect it has on a community as well. These people have bought up most of downtown, turned it into a cult mecca by way fo slave labor (I'm not kidding) and brainwashed fools in little navy uniforms everywhere, and scuttled the property tax base of the city. Remember, they are a "church".

To quote Zappa: "Tax the churches. Tax the businesses owned by the churches".
