Jenna Bush Tries Not To Flash Pope Benedict XVI: Video

Pope Benedict XVI was greeted with loud cheers as he stepped off the plane today, marking his first official visit to the US since he became Pope. President Bush, the First Lady and their daughter Jenna were on hand to greet the Pope personally, along with other dignitaries. Jenna, however, looked a bit uncomfortable as she welcomed the Pope, offering him one of her hands and using the other to keep the strong wind from blowing her skirt up around her waist.

Well, I imagine they were told that was what they were supposed to wear...which would be appropriate, I suppose if they were Roman Catholic, but since he is coming as head of state as well as head of the Roman Catholic Church, one has to wonder why our Protestant President and his family follow the protocol related to his church role rather than his clerical role when this functuion is the state role. I look at this as no different than the fact that our leaders are not supposed to bow and curtsy to the Queen of England nor is our flag to be lowered to a leader of another company. I thought WE believed inthe separation of Church and State, but apparently not, I guess, when the vatican is concerned. Had Jeb, who is Roman Catholic and his family been president, then the dress would have been appropriate for them.

It certainly can pose an awkward situation when wearing a dress or skirt and the wind is blowing. Luckily she had a free hand to hold on to her skirt. The real test would have been taking out your car keys while pushing a grocery cart, opening the trunk, loading the groceries in the car, maintaining your purse hooked over your shoulder, placing your child in a car seat, all this while holding on to your skirt. Not an easy thing to do.
