Heck

***Update***
Jeffrey Schneider, Vice President of ABC News told HuffPost that the audience wasn't heckling the hosts for their poor questions, but rather, "The audience in the debate auditorium reacted that we were going to a final commercial."

---
Reflecting what seemed to be the main consensus of the night - that ABC botched this debate, big time - Charlie Gibson tells the crowd there will be one more, superfluous commercial break of the night and is subsequently jeered.

"OH..." he declares, hands raised in defense. "The crowd is turning on me, the crowd is turning on me."

Off camera, observers let out their frustrations. Watch it:

Visitors to ABC's site weren't much kinder. Here's a sampling on page 1:

...This is AWFUL. Thank goodness for Jon Stewart and Comedy Central. He does a better job of interviewing and asking relevant questions of his guests in 5 minutes than these 2 yahoos have in more than an hour. ABC should be ashamed. George should be ashamed. Charlie should be ashamed. This isn't a debate. This is a hit job.

...Asinine questions - abysmal debate. Fire these silly moderators NOW. They insult the intelligence of the American people.

...I haven't watched ABC "news" in a few years. I see I haven't been missing much! MORE THAN half the debate turned over to Bittergate, Rev Wright, the Weathermen, Tuzla, FLAG LAPEL PINS? Most of the televised debates I've seen this campaign season have been lame, but this one takes the prize. Either you guys are morons or you think that we are. Either way, I'm glad to have seen the last of you. Really, really bad.No winners in this debate, but a definite loser: ABC "NEWS"

...This is the WORST debate I have ever watched. Never in my life have I been more disenchanted with the news media as a whole, especially a news organization such as ABC that I believed to have some sense of purpose to bring substantive information and perspective to the American people. Americans are tired of the snipping between the candidates and the lack of discussion about what each candidate will do to help the country. ABC News should be ashamed for presenting such a failure of a debate.

...Are you kidding me? "We don't have much time left. Let's have a MINUTE to talk about gas?" Charlie and George, you need a crash course on the distinction between "issues" and an "agendas." Hint: The candidates have the former; you have the latter.

...ABC News . . you should be ashamed of this debate. Where did you get these questions?? Where are the ISSUES. We have heard enough about Rev Wright and what Hillary did or didn't do in Bosnia. Let's hear about issues that matter such as the cost of Health Care, the war in Iraq, the Energy Crisi, the Crisis in Our Schools, and THE ECONOMY, STUPID!!

...Geoirge and Charlie= narcissistic elite "journalists" trying to score a rating point, but asking questions that would yield a "F" in middle school journalism. This debate may be used for years in journalism classes, on how to not run a debate. Disney-who owns ABC- get better cartoon characters to run a debate. Elmer Fudd would do much better.

...Has ABC News noticed that your so called "debate" has been universally panned? Charles Gibson is a pandering person more fit for the National Enquirer than a responsible news program. Stephanopoulis is barely better. I am so disappointed but not surprised.

The Clintons facing Fraud charges, hearing in a week and the media is not covering it.

The first lawsuit to haul a President and a Senator into Court for defrauding the Senator's largest donor as part of a conspiracy to illegally win and keep a US Senate seat will begin discovery in May, 2008 as it proceeds to trial as confirmed by the California Supreme Court.

The discovery will expose an ongoing cover-up of the campaign finance crimes and the obstructions of justice directed by Hillary Clinton with the help of Bill Clinton and former DNC Chair Ed Rendell. The cover-up rivals Watergate in its corruption of each branch of government and the media.

Exactly! We have just begun to see the dirt in Obama's background that compromises him as a candidate. Wait til they see how the "change" argument was just so much a political tactic, and the only change we see is how Obama changes his address, if he wins the presidency.

We as a country should be more focused on asking Congress why is Bush not yet IMPEACHED!
This has much more bearing on our future of our Country. We always look the oposite direction we need to.
HMMM. Maybe we deserve the hosing the Decider is giving us!

The guy(paul) is broke and trying to shake down the Clintons, Why bother to digg up the scum of society. This is about electing the very best President we have ever had and yes looks like it will also be the very first women, President Hillary Rodham Clintoni

(The California Court of Appeals, Second Appellate District, is considering a case brought by Paul, who is appealing a California Superior Court ruling dismissing Clinton from an earlier lawsuit on the grounds it was frivolous. In his original lawsuit, Paul is suing Hillary and Bill Clintons and others, claiming their actions cost him his multi-million dollar Internet venture. Paul contends that in exchange for producing the fundraising event, President Clinton agreed to work as a rainmaker for the company after leaving the White House. Paul says the former president reneged.)

Wow! In all this raging debate about debate, nobody has mentioned the Elephant in Your Living Room: ABC is owned by Disney. That's all you need to know. Disney is in the Entertainment Business. Period. Disney is a mult-national, multi-billion dollar entertainment enterprise. They make their money, build their theme parks and real estate assets, pay their CEOs and employees ALL through entertaining people. Entertainment is what they do. They own Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax & Pixar. They own E!, A&E, Lifetime, ABC Family, SOAPNet and ESPN. They own scores of TV and radio stations, publishing companies, magazines, cruise lines, parks and resorts.

The Disney Empire was constructed on make-believe.

They care about making money by selling you product: Goofy tee-shirts, Mary Poppins DVDs, a fantasy condo in Celebration Florida (where it's still the '50s), and this summer's latest Blockbuster. Britney and Lindsay are Disney products.

Watching ABC for news and/or information is like going to a butcher for fine art. Sure, there's an art to cutting meat, but would you hang it in your home?

Disney is here to entertain you. Disney does not care about democracy. Democracy does not make them money, and it is not fantasy.

They probably don't even know it themselves, but Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolous are entertainers. They are not statesmen, journalists, politicians or really even decent citizens. They are simply hunks of meat with wallets, collecting their paychecks from The Rat.

OK, I'll bite. What led you to believe I am a black and white thinker (I am far from it)? Instead of making a characterization of me based on factual information about ABC's ownership and what their agenda might be, why not address the substance of my post? Do you also work for them? That's fine, just admit that Disney is about entertainment, not democracy. ABC is a broadcasting company that is paid for with advertising dollars. The function of any commercial entity that supports itself through ad dollars is to deliver audiences to advertisers. That's not a judgment, it is a structural fact. No advertising dollars, no paychecks for anyone. So, how to deliver the largest audience most likely to buy what the advertiser is selling? That is ABC's function. It's not news. If it were, it would report the news. It reports "stories". Things that bring ratings, like Mark Foley. Like missing white women. Like Britney and Lindsay.

ABC has not reported that the Bush administration granted Cardinal Ratzinger immunity from prosecution in 2005 in a sex-abuse civil suit brought in Texas. That seems to me to be newsworthy, (particularly with the same guy now visiting here as Pope) but maybe is too controversial for to all those Catholics who take their kids to Disney World. So that little tidbit doesn't get mentioned, among so many other things that are all over blogs like this, but somehow, mysteriously (not really) don't make the evening news.

I don't see any flag lapel pins on george or charlie does that make them unpatiotic or terrorist

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:04 PM on 04/18/2008

George and Charlie and ABC are out defending their performance based on nuanced political analysis that justifies the debate.
However, they broke a major rule of journalism - they made the main story about them. The only thing people are talking about is whether the debate was too sleazy and whether the moderators were biased. So, on those grounds alone, they failed miserably and should have their ombudsman review the debate.
I'm wondering if the response of George and Charlie to this point would be that the viewers are biased.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:10 PM on 04/18/2008

Yeah, Clinton wasn't wearing one, either. But that wasn't a STORY, so they didn't notice.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:17 PM on 04/18/2008

Only Obama said wearing the pin to show your patriotism was silly, that's why it's an issue. Every military person wears the flag on their sleeve as a symbol of America. Ditto the pin. If you dismiss the pin, are you dismissing America? It's a character issue, and moreover, by not buckling and wearing the damn pin, he heightens the level of concern and questions. Wear the damn pin to win.

Since most people had never heard of Obama's decision not to wear American flag pins, I too wondered why Gibson and Stephanopolous thought that decision was worth bringing up.

Though I'm sure Rush and other Republicans will be mentioning it if Obama gets the nomination, so Obama will need a short pat answer rather than the long one he gave.

Instead of focusing on the issues that the average American is interested in, moderators George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson focused on the "gotchas," verbal gaffes and divisive trivia that only the average bigot, zealot and ideologue is interested in.

The audience was more than right in booing these two incompetents.

I hope and pray that--if and when Messrs. Gibson and Stephanopoulos get another chance--they will help the national poltical dialogue, not muddle it up.

What issue do you have with Kieth Olbermann? Every point he makes, unlike O'rielly, is substanciated and well sourced. He reports news that is important to the viewers who watch him, it is not Mr. Olbermann's fault if this audience is much larger or more diverse; Kieth Olbermann is niether a 'stuge' nor a fox retard.

In order to help assure future debates focus on issues of importance (to most of us) we need to send a strong message. May is a sweeps month for television ratings, ratings that determine what advertisers pay to air ads. Boycott ABC News AND entertainment for the entire month. If enough of us do it and ratings drop the debates in the general election may be more focused on what matters to most in the electorate.

Consider this - if these issues ("Wright" i.e. the ideas and words of another human being who despite some flawed thinking has done good works for poor ppl of all races and has brought thousands to Christ); Flagpins as the measure of one's patriotism; Ppl in small towns voting re wedge issues when they feel their gov't wont help them even when they're in dire economic straits; a tenuous, brief acquaintance with a domestic terrorist who committed those acts when BO was 8 yrs old) are the worst Hillary, and the GOP have to throw at him - then I say: "Do your worst"!

And therein lies the rub. This IS the worst they can do against him and they are running scared to death! Because this fair minded, deliberate, intelligent, man who has inspired our youth to civic action and crossed racial barriers to sound a unifying, populist, theme of fairness, change and hope - this bi-racial, multi-ethnic, man whose DNA, itself, embodies the American ideal of ET PLURIBUS UNUM - is threatening to undermine the power, greed, and monied interests that have dominated Govt for far too long. And he has vowed to give that power back to the people. He is a threat they must assassinate; if not literally (and I pray they wont) then by smearing his character thru inane guilt by association arguments or other irrelevant assaults on his integrity - integrity they themselves lack to a far greater degree, to be sure.

If it didn't hurt the country in the process, I think it would be good for Obama to be President. But it will. His proclaimed "change you can believe in" will implode, Washington will not change (the Constitution itself has codified into law many of the issues the Obamamaniacs have a problem with - hence there will be no change), and you all will be disillusioned once again. In order to have true freedom, the founders knew we would argue, take opposing views, fight passionately for your cause and someone will always win, and someone will always lose. That is the essence of democracy.

On the other hand, having raised the most money ($175 million), in order to truly change what you all don't like, he must change the very system that gave him that much money. As long as the $ is the basis of the electoral process, the change you seek simply will not happen. You think the man who has benefitted so much, and by the end, received the most cash from campaign contribution laws is going to change what gave him the $$$. Not gonna happen.

OH the HYPOCRISY.

When MSNBC moderated the last debate.....Brian Williams C O M P L A I N E D that the candidates spent too much time on health care because he had "much to cover" that night.

Well, then he proceeded to have HRC watch tapes of herself being "mean" to Obama and asked her to comment on it.

YOU CALL THAT A GOOD DEBATE?????

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:13 AM on 04/18/2008

.... And Kieth Olbermann asked Obama about Barry Bonds and Steriods in Baseball; doesn't change the fact that the ABC debate was completely asinine. I said this before but George Stephanopoulos should have asked Clointon about MENA (Iran Contra, CIA drug smuggling in Arkansas) when he dished out the Weather Underground questions to Obama. Even some questions about Norman Hsu would have shown some indifference on his part but this was a cartoon debate and George Stephanopoulos along with Charlie Gibson lost a ton of credibility.

Oh the hypocrisy is right. You certainly didn't hear any outrage from the Obama media and his sweet supporters on this hypocritical blog either.

Yeah, MSNBC News really conducted themselves professionally as they sat there and bashed HIllary for 90 minutes.

The difference between ABC and MsNBC's debates, is that Hillary still came out standing, Obama crumbled under the pressure from the ABC questions.

It is so unbelievable how there is a double standard in this primary campaign. THe OBama supporters here are threatening to storm the ABC studios.

WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAZIES! Someone please break out the straight jackets.
