***Update***
Jeffrey Schneider, Vice President of ABC News told HuffPost that the audience wasn't heckling the hosts for their poor questions, but rather, "The audience in the debate auditorium reacted that we were going to a final commercial."

---
Reflecting what seemed to be the main consensus of the night - that ABC botched this debate, big time - Charlie Gibson tells the crowd there will be one more, superfluous commercial break of the night and is subsequently jeered.

"OH..." he declares, hands raised in defense. "The crowd is turning on me, the crowd is turning on me."

Off camera, observers let out their frustrations. Watch it:

Visitors to ABC's site weren't much kinder. Here's a sampling on page 1:

...This is AWFUL. Thank goodness for Jon Stewart and Comedy Central. He does a better job of interviewing and asking relevant questions of his guests in 5 minutes than these 2 yahoos have in more than an hour. ABC should be ashamed. George should be ashamed. Charlie should be ashamed. This isn't a debate. This is a hit job.

...Asinine questions - abysmal debate. Fire these silly moderators NOW. They insult the intelligence of the American people.

...I haven't watched ABC "news" in a few years. I see I haven't been missing much! MORE THAN half the debate turned over to Bittergate, Rev Wright, the Weathermen, Tuzla, FLAG LAPEL PINS? Most of the televised debates I've seen this campaign season have been lame, but this one takes the prize. Either you guys are morons or you think that we are. Either way, I'm glad to have seen the last of you. Really, really bad.No winners in this debate, but a definite loser: ABC "NEWS"

...This is the WORST debate I have ever watched. Never in my life have I been more disenchanted with the news media as a whole, especially a news organization such as ABC that I believed to have some sense of purpose to bring substantive information and perspective to the American people. Americans are tired of the snipping between the candidates and the lack of discussion about what each candidate will do to help the country. ABC News should be ashamed for presenting such a failure of a debate.

...Are you kidding me? "We don't have much time left. Let's have a MINUTE to talk about gas?" Charlie and George, you need a crash course on the distinction between "issues" and an "agendas." Hint: The candidates have the former; you have the latter.

...ABC News . . you should be ashamed of this debate. Where did you get these questions?? Where are the ISSUES. We have heard enough about Rev Wright and what Hillary did or didn't do in Bosnia. Let's hear about issues that matter such as the cost of Health Care, the war in Iraq, the Energy Crisi, the Crisis in Our Schools, and THE ECONOMY, STUPID!!

...Geoirge and Charlie= narcissistic elite "journalists" trying to score a rating point, but asking questions that would yield a "F" in middle school journalism. This debate may be used for years in journalism classes, on how to not run a debate. Disney-who owns ABC- get better cartoon characters to run a debate. Elmer Fudd would do much better.

...Has ABC News noticed that your so called "debate" has been universally panned? Charles Gibson is a pandering person more fit for the National Enquirer than a responsible news program. Stephanopoulis is barely better. I am so disappointed but not surprised.

Obama's supporters are rude. They heckle and jeer if their man is beaten down. They just want their man coronated. Obama is like their baby, You can't touch him or he'll cry and whine.
For goodness sake, he's running for the presidency of the USA. Little is known about him. Line of questioning must explore the kind of person he is, particularly after he expressed his sentiment and attitude in talking down to small town America insulting their intelligence and way of life.
If you want to know his positions on the issues, just go to Hillaryclinton.com. He cut and pasted his positions from Hillary's website.
The line of questioning revealed some of his questionable character. His close associations with Rev. Wright and Ayers and his refusal to wear the flag pin are alarming. And he tried to wiggle himself out of Wright's when he said he has disowned him. When pressed on it, he admitted that he meant his comments. His speech in Philly clearly stated he won't disown Wright. The man is a liar.

Quite the opposite yotinzepol, I know more about Obama than I ever need to, and I know he will be the best president we have ever had because he inspires the best in people and rejects the insepid politics of destruction that have ruled washington.

Hillary has been around a long time and has pushed much aside dismissing it as the 'right wing conspiracy' but if you want to get to know your candidate you should take a look. Far from Obama's minute weather underground connections Hillary has been involved in some pretty nasty stuff; look up 'barry seale, dan lasater, Mena Airport' read what you find then ask yourself where Reverend Wright's Hyperbole, Bill Ayers' and Obama's charity work, Tony Rezko and the absence of a lapel pin rank in kind.

I would love to hear HIllary supporters' reactions were someone, anyone to bring up the baggage she proudly refers to (knowing, somehow, I don't know how, that she is safe from ever being confronted by these things).

Why are the words Whitewater, Vince Foster, Monica Lewinsky, Ron Brown, Travelgate, Norman Hsu, , the fundamentalist religious group the Family which she bonded with ------why are these OUT OF BOUNDS and TABOO when we can act as if Obama's acquaintances, friends and those he listens to at Church are so incredibly significant in terms of his ability to be President.

And older women like myself try to tell me that Hillary has had a rough ride from the media.

Were she not running against an Obama who behaved like an average politician, she'd win on the NH style, on-cue vulnerabilty we'd see seep through as she sobbed her way out of debates - her campaign must pay homage to the Lord daily in gratitude that Obama possesses discipline and a sincere commitment to keep things at a level worthy of the American people. He has yet to bring up any one of the bags she carries proudly with her, safe that they are locked and secure for a reason I have yet to discern.

yotinzepol, my grandfather from arkansas raged against blacks and mexicans constantly. Yet I'll say very clearly, he was a good man and one of my heros. I hated his prejudice, but I could see beyond his faults and his horrible words. Obama exemplifies what Christ taught, he hates the sin (what he saw Wright do in those videos) but he loves the sinner. I can recall some of the multitude of stupid things I've done. I'm in no position to judge Rev. Wright or Hilary for that matter. In a nutshell Mr. or Ms. Yo - Obama has the courage to speak the truth about his loyalty to a man who assisted him in his faith and like the Savior he claims in his life, he associates and spends time with people who are very different than himself without judging them. What a guy! He is comfortable in his own skin enough to walk in the shoes of others, especially those he supposedly was talking down to. Read his comments in full context before you judge.

He lied, clear and simple about what he knew, when he knew it - about Wright, Rezko, Ayers - it's a pattern for political gain. Hmmm, now where did I hear that as the reason you hate the Clinton's? The man's a liar, the rest is minor as you explain. And, you think you can trust him?

This debate was the perfect example of the worst journalism has to offer. i hope the American public won't be subjected to this type of biased attack on a candidate in the future.

IMO, the audience should have heckled themselves as well as the ABC journalists. That kind of behavior reeks of the Bush administration years, and it was embarrassing. What ever happened to manners, respect, courtesy? What has happened to our Country! I want MY America back again.

It is ironic to hear all of this whining by the OBama zombies. He has controlled the media for far too long; no wonder the righties have their own channel, FOX. The media needs to start reporting the news instead of trying to frame it. This love affair with Obama has gotten totally ridiculous and this type of reporting gave us George Bush. They need to ask tough questions of all the candidates, saying things like when he speaks something runs up my leg is for supporters not news reporters.

It wasn't that it went poorly for the reputation of either candidate. It's just that so much time was WASTED on "manufactured" issues. These non-issues are echoed by people here as significant. And they are only significant to the detractors themselves. It went poorly for the network because the possibilities that EITHER candidate represent were left undisplayed.

Lil 'George probably passed the questions to Mommy ahead of time. That's why she was so prepared. Corporate America is shitting in their knickers at the prospect of Obama getting the WH.
For those too young to remember:
"George Stephanopoulos (born February 10, 1961) is an American broadcaster and political adviser. He is currently ABC News's Chief Washington Correspondent and the host of ABC's Sunday morning news show This Week.
Prior to joining ABC News, he was a senior political adviser to the 1992 U.S. presidential campaign of Bill Clinton and later became Clinton's communications director."

Just curious if Charlie and George have taken a minute to check out their own comments page where there are currently 19,850 comments - at least 95% negative. There is no getting around it - they FUBAR'd this debate. From their defense of themselves it is clear that they just don't get it- so I guess their staffers are shielding them from the anger and criticism.

While I agree the debate was slanted in Hillary's favor, the questions Obama was asked were perfectly valid. Right now the democratic party is split virtually in half and so is the country.

If Obama wins the primary, 30% of Hillary's supporters have declared they will vote for McCain.
Independents will look to Obama's associates and friends, particularly a certain reverend living in a 10,000 sq/ft mansion by a golf course (who hates whites, no less).

Obama's friends, family and remarks are going to be drug out day after day. He doesn't much look like a man of the people anymore and unless you are a committed worshiper, this is becoming more and more evident as the democrats beat the hell out of one another.

People listened to his Harvard educated wife tell America that only just recently has she found a reason to be proud of America. People listened to the derisive laughter when Obama described to his audience in San Fransisco, bigoted, superstitious and bitter, small town Americans. Insulting your fellow Americans for wondering why Obama calls domestic terrorists and race baiters like Farrakhan and Wright his friends is a bit close minded.

While I admire your enthusiasm and loyalty, I hope you will begin to look at your candidate a little more realistically. The rest of us are and it may come as an awful shock when we send him packing.

Hillary is not going to be president of the United States. She can't win the nomination by the numbers and if the DLC stole it for her (which won't happen) she'd lose to McCain in the general election. There is a reason why the right wing freaks want Hillary to win the nomination: they know the GOP can beat her soundly, what with the tons of sleaze and scandal that is attached to the Clintons.

"Independents will look to Obama's associates and friends, particularly a certain reverend living in a 10,000 sq/ft mansion by a golf course (who hates whites, no less)."

I happen to be one of those independents.

I support Senator Obama (but will support Senator Clinto if she wins), as (1) I don't swallow the spin of the corporate press, and (2) I see "Hundred Years War" McCain for the typical "Gang of Pedophiles" hack that he is.

"If Obama wins the primary, 30% of Hillary's supporters have declared they will vote for McCain."

Which means the other 70% of Hillary's supporters will most probably vote for Obama, as they undertstand what a corrupt, deranged, and utterly dishonest piece of garbage "Hundred Years War" McCain really is, that McCain is Charles Keating's willing servant, and the willing servant of corporate lobbyists who can't tell a Shiite from a Sunni.

Pulleeze!

Rev. Wright is not connected to Obama's campaign in any way -interesting that they managed to slip Louis Farakan's name in during the debate even though he never had anything to do with Barack Obama.

No one had anything to say when Mike Huckabee spoke at a conservative conference where a choir sang "Why Should God Bless America?" (just Google the song title).

Give me an example of something Rev. Wright has said that indicates that he hates white people (an actual sentence, not a 5 second out of context sound bite). I guess that's why McHillary's pastor has come out in his defense. Oral Roberts has a private jet (he's not the only one), and Bill Graham's mansion was surrounded by an electric fence.

"While I admire your enthusiasm and loyalty, I hope you will begin to look at your candidate a little more realistically."
-I could ask the same of you: she talks about dodging Bosnian ninja snipers that never happened, McHillary "leaks" a story accusing Barack Obama of telling the Canadians to ignore what he says about NAFTA when in it was her own campaign that it and circulates photos of Obama in ceremonial garb trying to stir up anti-muslim sentiment against him when he isn't even a muslim.
Did I mention that McHillary is behind in the delegate and popular count, and has to win ALL of the remaining state primaries by over 60 percent in order to catch him?

I'm sure in their own eyes ABC news and their resident retards Charlie and George think they did the finest job in debate moderation since Lincoln-Douglas. They'd be right too...if everybody at the Lincoln-Douglas debates had a frontal lobotomies and 100 micrograms of LSD.
Charles Gibson is one of the stupidest anchors in the business who told Don Imus that he wouldn't cover any story that couldn't be explained in 2 minutes. Given how fixated the clowns at ABC News are by guilt by association maybe we should wonder why Gibson didn't ask Obama how it felt to be a "Nappy headed hoe".

looked up georges bio on wiki cause someone said he was a rhodes scholar and found this... george is a member of the bilderberg group

Critics say the Bilderberg Group promotes the careers of politicians whose views are representative of the interests of multinational corporations, at the expense of democracy.[6] Journalists who have been invited to attend the Bilderberg Conference as observers have discounted these claims, calling the conference "not much different from a seminar or a conference organized by an upscale NGO"[7] with "nothing different except for the influence of the participants."[8]

The group's secrecy and its connections to power elites has provided fodder for many who believe that the group is part of a conspiracy to create a New World Order. Radio host Alex Jones, a well known conspiracy theorist,[9] promotes the claim that the group intends to dissolve the sovereignty of the United States and other countries into a supra-national structure similar to the European Union.[10] Madrid-based author Daniel Estulin, writing in the conspiracy theory magazine Nexus, claims that the long-term purpose of Bilderberg is to "Build a One-World Empire". He states the group "is not the end but the means to a future One World Government".[11]

Reporter Jonathan Duffy, writing in BBC News Online Magazine states "In the void created by such aloofness, an extraordinary conspiracy theory has grown up around the group that alleges the fate of the world is largely decided by Bilderberg."

Hillary is their candidate. Jimmy Carter turned out not to be malleable enough for them. They tried again with Reagan with partial success. They next chose - and hit the jackpot with - BIll Clinton who gave them all the deregulation and free trade they wanted. GWB was their next choice for putting in office and he's been putty in their hands, giving them all everything on their list to undermine the individual power of the United States. Hillary is their guy this time around. It's the old sell your soul to the devil for worldly goods. The Bilderberg Group will make it work for you if you make it work for them.
