I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Barber

During the past week, Sen. Hillary Clinton has presented herself as a working class populist, the politician in touch with small town sentiments, compared to the elitism of her opponent, Sen. Barack Obama.

But a telling anecdote from her husband's administration shows Hillary Clinton's attitudes about the "lunch-bucket Democrats" are not exactly pristine.

In January 1995, as the Clintons were licking their wounds from the 1994 congressional elections, a debate emerged at a retreat at Camp David. Should the administration make overtures to working class white southerners who had all but forsaken the Democratic Party? The then-first lady took a less than inclusive approach.

"Screw 'em," she told her husband. "You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."

The statement -- which author Benjamin Barber witnessed and wrote about in his book, "The Truth of Power: Intellectual Affairs in the Clinton White House" -- was prompted by another speaker raising the difficulties of reaching "Reagan Democrats." It stands in stark contrast to the attitude the New York Democrat has recently taken on the campaign trail, in which she has presented herself as the one candidate who understands the working-class needs.

"I don't think [Obama] really gets it that people are looking for a president who stands up for you and not looks down on you," she said this week.

But those who were at the event say the 1995 episode fits into her larger viewpoint. As Harry Boyte, the director of the University of Minnesota's Center for Democracy and Citizenship who was at the retreat, told The Huffington Post: "[Hillary Clinton] sees herself as the champion of the oppressed, but there is always a kind of good guy versus bad guy mentality. The comment before that was that 'the Reagan Democrats are our enemies and they weren't on our side,' and she was agreeing with that comment. She said we should write them off: screw them."

A spokesperson for Clinton said the quote was taken out of context and did not reflect her true political philosophy. "This quote differs from the recollection of others who were in the room at the time this comment was allegedly made," said Jay Carson. "To be clear, that's not how she felt then and it's not how she feels now, and the proof is in how she has lived her life, the work she has done and the policies she has pushed and pursued over the last 35 years."

Story continues below

Asked to produce a witness who would say that Clinton had been misquoted, Carson wrote: "So, you've got two guys we've barely heard of remembering a verbatim quote from 13 years ago?... Sounds totally and completely reliable."

(Carson eventually put me in touch with a source who claimed to not have heard the quote -- see below). Barber's book was published in 2001.

Perhaps even more telling than Hillary Clinton's proclamation, however, were the words from her husband that followed. As reported by Barber, Clinton "stepped in, calm and judicious, not irritated, as if rehearsing an old but honorable debate he had been having with his wife for decades."

I know how you feel. I understand Hillary's sense of outrage. It makes me mad too. Sure, we lost our base in the South; our boys voted for Gingrich. But let me tell you something. I know these boys. I grew up with them. Hardworking, poor, white boys, who feel left out, feel that our reforms always come at their expense. Think about it, every progressive advance our country has made since the Civil War has been on their backs. They're the ones asked to pay the price of progress. Now, we are the party of progress, but let me tell you, until we find a way to include these boys in our programs, until we stop making them pay the whole price of liberty for others, we are never going to unite our party, never really going to have change that sticks.

If the tone and tenor of the above sounds familiar, it's because the message, Boyte says, is remarkably similar to what Obama was trying to convey in his now controversial remarks about small town America.

"Well, yeah, absolutely," said Boyte, when asked if Obama and Bill Clinton were expressing the same political viewpoint (Boyte said he and his organization are neutral in the presidential race). "I think Obama's better-or-worse versions of this have always been that people are complicated. It comes from an organizing perspective. You don't write off people, everyone is complicated. It just depends on the issue. And that's what Bill Clinton was saying. He was a sentimental populist."

Not to be lost in all this, as Boyte notes, is that Hillary Clinton has consistently been a "champion for the people who were helpless and powerless." But there is a political component to the mindset.

"Hillary Clinton has a very strong customer view: the citizen is the customer and the government the vendor," said Boyte. "You can see it in Mark Penn's frame. In fact, last Christmas she had an ad of herself writing checks to different groups."

Update: Jake Tapper, over at ABC, had highlighted the "screw em" quote back in October. His article was in reference to comments Sen. Clinton had made about Mississippi. Considering events this past week, the issue has taken on increased relevance.

Late Update: The Clinton campaign put me in touch with Don Baer, President Clinton's speech writer at the time, who had attended the same meeting. He says: "I don't remember anything along those lines, at all. And I certainly don't remember Senator Clinton saying anything like that... they have their recollections of that, that is their business. The conversation, from my perspective, was moderated in tone."

He did not, it should be noted, directly challenge the interpretations of Barber and Boyte.

Baer's comments came at roughly the same moment that The New Republic published a blog post by Alan Wolfe, a professor of political science at Boston College, who was also at the retreat and says he too heard the quote. Noting Carson's remark -- "So, you've got two guys we've barely heard of remembering a verbatim quote from 13 years ago?... Sounds totally and completely reliable" -- Wolfe writes: "Make that three. I was there. I hope people have heard of me. And Barber and Boyte have it right."

I tried to post my question regarding this on the abcnews blog and they won't let me put it up. I tried several times. Jerks.

I even took the c out of the SCREW EM! Didn't want to offend the ABC bunch with the word SCREW! It is ok when Hillary Clinton says it as First Lady. If Obama would have said something like this when he was freaking 3 years old, the press would have picked it up. Assholes...

What a bunch of hyprocrites, they don't mind wasting our time asking stupid questions but when someone calls them on it they dismiss it.

Someone posted on there that they had been watching the blogs and they are not letting them go over 20,000! Fair and Balanced, Fox news and now we have ABC news

If this was Obama saying these disgusting remarks, the press would be all over this.

SCREW EM and it gets no press! The southern white voters obviously have not been aware of these divisive remarks. She is such a hyprocrite. I can't wait until this primary is over. The Republicans are giddy with excitement that it is taking this long. She will continue to go if she wins by 1 freaking point.

She is a egomaniac! PA VOTERS - END THIS FOR US NOW

Vote Obama

Obama is as bad!! Remember his speech on race and his minister? WHere he said Wright was raised in racism? And wright saying things like GD AMerica and America is owned by RICH WHITE MEN? Wellllll, Wright is NOW moving into 98% WHITE gated community on a golf course and a 10,000. sq ft house!! Plus he has a ten MILLION line of credit! Now that tells me that obama ALSO LIES - AND castigates the working folks who cling to GUNS and RELIGION!
Let's get rid of both of them and start all over - there have to be better candidates than these two!

How do you transfer Wright's moving into a white community into a lie by Obama? Nothing in your statement makes sense, nobody castigated anybody...but you castigated everyone. Odd.

Yes, I was also there, but, my hearing device ran out of power in the middle of the speech, so don't tell anyone...Geez, the effort the Obama-ist people bring the issues of the past like that. I sure hope the Republicans or Clinton people would continue to do the same, if Obama is selected as the person the represent Democrats.

Why I am saying this is clear. If Hillary would have selected, this media would have done the same. The amount of hate I am seeing here is really annoying me. Especially stuff that doesn't rely on actual evidence but he says she says kind of attitudes. At the least, what Clinton people brought up regarding Obama are based on actual evidence, even if they may have extended the range of those actions, they are there. But, what the Obama people are doing here is "pure", hate. And these are the people who are voting for Obama to unite the Americans. First do it yourself, before asking it from others.

LOL...complaining about "hate" while you spew the same. If its hate for Obama to stand up for himself under a barrage of crap then it is hate for Clinton to do the same.

I don't think you get the problem. Obama is the one creating concerns by not holding his long tongue inside his mouth, when he has to. Clinton is bringing those in front, when the media does not want anything more than ignoring those.

What I am saying happens after that. After Clinton brings those issues, the Obama'ist media starts its attacks on Clinton to settle the score. Oh, you did that when you were 13, how can you claim that? Or, I remember in a speech, which was not recorded, I remember her saying something along those lines. But, it is my just my word, believe or not. Nice way to defend Obama by throwing muds out of nothing, whereas Clinton only needs to show the mud already created by Obama himself.

Think about it—Hillary has the same despicable characteristics of President Bush-Cheney.

With Hillary, it’s the same old:
· deeply polarizing and divisive self, even within her own party.
· record of secrecy, lies, and prevarications, a government of hidden agendas, secret policies, and outright deceit, resulting an inability to believe in what she says or trust in what she does.
· my-way-or-the-highway mentality, with politics itself not a matter of compromise and necessary (if at times unhappy) cooperation, but a constant battle against vast political conspiracies.
· reckless fiscal policies, bankrupting America without control and without end.
· being totally in the pockets of Corporate America, lobbyists, and special interest groups.
· imperious disregard for the rule of law, of her party or of America, never being concerned about bending it, reinterpreting it, or disregarding it altogether if it does not suit her own personal needs.
· the same old politics of fear, so much that we must be afraid of, and the hollow promise that only she can save us.
· staged and choreographed presentations of public appearances, controlled in advance so significant and challenging questions will never have to be answered, so inconvenient truths will never have to be discussed.
· mentality of arrogant superiority, which refuses to genuinely admit that she is or ever was wrong about anything in any way, so the experiences she does have are rendered useless for she never learns from them.

America deserves much better.

Obama is the more “politically correct” candidate. Democrats have an epidemic of political correctness and lack of vision simultaneously.

Clinton is pragmatic and effective. She also is a women.
The US of A is seeing on of the darkest seasons of misogynistic media treatment and American males are certainly taking the opportunity to say what they really feel about powerful women, or women being in power. The average American male is less racist then they are “machistas”.

Is that what you call progress?
Very interesting sociological conclusion.

What does her being a woman have anything to do with her being able to do the job. She didn't even read the intelligence report for the Iraq war. That is not a gender issue that is poor judgement issue. Obviously you must not be black. I am a 26 years old black man that gets followed through stores, people assume b/c I wear a du-rag im a thug (it really just makes your hair look good), police look at you that extra 10 seconds when they drive by, and I have had the n-bomb dropped in front of me (not the "What's up my n!&&a", but the way the confederates used it) by people who i thought were friends, by people who just hated me for being black, and by white men and women who grew up in small towns that just didn't know better. Is that what we call progress. She is white woman who has 109 million dollars. She gets away with saying she is going to do this or that for women, but if Barack said he was going to do something specifically for black people he would be labeled as just a black candidate who cares only about his own community. He has to be extra politically correct b/c look what happened with the bitter comments, when all he was doing was telling the truth. It may have been a hard pill to swallow, but the truth none the less.

She surely is pragmatic and effective with the kitchen sink strategy! What a wonderful ex-first "lady".
The US of A is seeing one of the longest war declared by Americans.
Thank you for the news that "The average American male is less racist then they are "machistas" .

Voting for a black guy or a woman is a sign of progress???
Very interesting sociological analysis.

What this really points out is that Hillary Clinton does not know what she thinks. She waits to see what the circumstances are, and then she shapes an opinion she thinks people will find praise-worthy. That's neurotic, and not a sign of leadership qualities.

We have an old phrase that captures this character flaw. We call such people, with no moral center, "trimmers," who trim their sails exactly according to the wind direction. In sail boats, that is a plus; in human beings that is immoral and dishonest. In a presidential candidate, it is intolerable.

FWIW Hillary is my Senator and I've written her about many issues, most based on pending legislation or government action relative to the financial sector or marketplace things that required government approval. Not once did she take any positive action to either slow or prevent what were assuredly one sided deals that favored corporate America and did nothing to protect the very people she supposes to support. Where the rubber meets the road she is solidly in the corner of big business and high finance. I've no doubt about that at all. For myself, her comment fits precisely with my experience.

The other side of this is, being a US Senator from NY, Hillary represents the financial center of the world and as a practical matter has little choice except to do their bidding. I do have issue with her decisions where things conflict though. When it comes to representing either the majority population or a single constituency I don't see there are any other choices than to take the side of what is unquestionably the majority as represented by middle America. Unfortunately that has not been the choice she most frequently has made. Anecdotally, it is no mere coincidence that Hillary and Bill took up residence in NY. It's like the old saying about the judge asking the man why he robbed the bank and having the man reply, "That's where the money is". To do what the Clintons are trying to achieve takes money.. and lots of it.

Perhaps this story serves Clinton right, but using this quote against her is unfair. First, Hillary suffers for being a woman using sexually connotative language. From a man "screw them" might sound tough in a good way. Also it is extracted from a discussion whose context means the remark says nothing about Hillary's attitude toward the working class. The remakr is simply an expression of anger. Who wouldn't have been angry to realize that one's mission had been derailed by the Sothern-fueled triumph of Gingrich in Congress in 2004. Much that Hillary had thought Bill's administration could accomplish had just become undoable. A few "screw thems" in a conversation focusing on what happened and why it should be highly forgivable even by Obama spporters. Second, Hillary's remarks can also be read as a political comment of some astuteness; namely we do not have to cater to Southern white males to win elections. She was, of course, correct as Bill showed in 1996. Still I cannot help but wonder how Hillary would have explained this remark had she been asked about it during the last debate.

For those who like fables with morals, this is a good example of the chickens coming home to roost. Had the Clinton campaign not attacked Obama so strongly without letup on his small town remark, we wouldn't be reading this column today. (Though I expect the McCain forces would have brought it out had she been, or if she is, the Democratic nominee.)

Anytime you say "Screw 'em" about a whole group that is a problem no matter what your gender is. I know if Barack made that same comment about young black men in inner cities he would be run out of office. Even if he had said it over ten years ago.

Did anyone watch Glenn Beck last night where he had a guess that felt Bill Clinton was knowingly making his wife's campaign collapse. As if we doesn't have enough problems especially with the Peter Paul issue coming up next week also, does anyone believe that Bill could be doing such a thing to his own wife?

I wouldn't put it past him now, but just to think that he might do such a thing because of all the money he will be losing if she becomes President. That's what the guest person said might be one of the reasons.
