PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Rodham Clinton said emphatically Wednesday night that Barack Obama can win the White House this fall, undercutting her efforts to deny him the Democratic presidential nomination by suggesting he would lead the party to defeat.

"Yes, yes, yes," she said when pressed about Obama's electability during a campaign debate six days before the Pennsylvania primary.

Asked a similar question about Clinton, Obama said "Absolutely and I've said so before" _ a not-so-subtle dig at his rival who had previously declined to make a similar statement about him.

In a 90-minute debate, both rivals pledged not to raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000, and said they would respond forcefully if Iran obtains nuclear weapons and uses them against Israel.

"An attack on Israel would incur massive retaliation by the United States," said Clinton.

Obama said, "The U.S. would take appropriate action."

They differed over Social Security when Obama said he favored raising payroll taxes on higher-income individuals. Clinton said she was opposed, her rival quickly cut in and countered that she had said earlier in the campaign she was open to the idea.

Under current law, workers must pay the payroll tax on their first $102,000 in wages. Obama generally has expressed support for a plan to reimpose the tax beginning at a level of $200,000 or more.

The debate was the 21st of the campaign for the nomination, an epic struggle that could last weeks or even months longer.

Pennsylvania, with 158 delegates at stake, is a must-win contest for Clinton, who leads in the polls and hopes for a strong victory to propel her through the other states that vote before the primary season ends on June 3.

Obama leads in the delegate chase, 1,643-1,504, with 2,025 needed for the nomination. And despite a recent gaffe, he picked up endorsements during the day from three superdelegates from a pair of states with primaries on May 6 _ Reps. Andre Carson of Indiana and Mel Watt and David Price of North Carolina.

After primaries and caucuses in 42 of the 50 states, Obama leads his rival in convention delegates, popular votes and states won. She is struggling to stop his drive on the nomination by appealing to party leaders who will attend the convention as superdelegates that he will preside over an electoral defeat at a moment of great opportunity after eight years of Republican rule.

The former first lady has never denied published reports that she once told New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson that Obama couldn't win when he called to tell her he would be endorsing the Illinois senator.

And at a news conference earlier this month in California, Clinton sidestepped when asked directly whether Obama would win if he were the Democratic nominee. "I am sure we will have a united Democratic Party. I will do everything possible to make sure we can win and I am confident we will have a Democrat in the White House next year," she said at the time.

Asked a similar question at the debate, she provided a similar answer at first. "I think we have to beat John McCain and I have every reason to believe we're going to have a Democratic president and it's going to be Barack or me."

Pressed by George Stephanopoulos of ABC News to answer the question directly, she said, "Yes, yes, yes ... Now I think I can do a better job."

In a debate that moved swiftly between politics and policy, Clinton issued a first-ever public apology for having claimed erroneously that she landed in Bosnia under sniper fire in 1996 as first lady.

"I may be a lot of things but I am not dumb," she said, adding that she had written in her book that there had been no gunfire during the episode. She said she was embarrassed by her error. "I'm sorry I said it," she added.

She previously had explained her incorrect comments by saying she had misspoken.

Obama later erred by saying he had never favored a ban on handguns even though as a state Senate candidate in 1996 he filled out a questionnaire from an Illinois voter group saying he would support such a ban.

"My writing wasn't on that particular questionnaire ... as I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns," Obama said, even though his handwritten notes did appear on its front page. The reponse to the question about guns was typed.

Obama had more explaining to do moments later, when he was asked about his controversial comment that small town Americans become bitter because of economic adversity, and "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them" as a result.

He said he was attempting to say that because voters feel ignored by government, "they end up being much more concerned about votes around things like guns where traditions have been passed on from generation to generation. And those are incredibly important to them."

"People don't cling to their traditions on hunting and guns" out of frustration with their government, Clinton said. She added that Obama had a fundamental misunderstanding on the role of religion and faith.

Both Obama and Clinton sidestepped when asked if they would place their rival on the ticket as vice presidential running mate in the fall.

"I think very highly of Senator Clinton's record, but I think it is premature at this point to talk about who the vice presidential candidates will be because we're still trying to determine who the nominee will be," Obama said.

Clinton was similarly noncommittal. "I'm going to do everything I possibly can to make sure that one of us takes the oath of office next January. I think that has to be the overriding goal," she said.

Neither rival was willing to say they would ask President Bush to serve in any capacity after he leaves office. Obama volunteered he would be "more likely to ask the advice of the current president's father. He said, that as president, George H. W. Bush had presided over a "wise foreign policy" at the time the Cold War was ending.

ABC News sponsored and televised the debate, with Charles Gibson and Stephanopoulos moderating.

Just if you think about it, the Clintons are like the Borgias. Rich, powerful, and corrupt.
Or like Lord Byron: mad, bad, and dangerous to know.

There's still time for ONE MORE debate about irrelevant soundbites, out of context quotes, blatant exaggerations and a few overblown distractions!

I WANT TO THANK ABC!!

By their uneven (I won't say biased) debate in where they bring out all the nonsense about Obama and the backlash that it has produced, leads me to believe this garbage will not be as big an issue during the general election as the Republicans would hope.

I was so disgusted at the Lynch Fest ABC put on last night, I literally wanted to vomit.

She is a MEGA LIAR. She squirmed when Tom asked her the question, and finally, finally, admitted a mistake, and lied further by saying it was only a couple of times! 4 times does not = a couple!

Barack tried to talk about issues, but OH NO! They just wanted dirt! Look I was for HILLARY at the onset, but I am a thinking person, not a LEMMING.

I do not care an ounce who other want to vote for, but I will NEVER, under any circumstances, even for the party, vote for that SLIME of a person. And she is right.....

YES, YES, YES! Barack will be the President of the USA. If she or the repub are chosen, so be it, but I will not be a party to this.

ABC is worse than a BAD B-rated movie!

I'm an independent voter, so independent that the only time I've ever voted was for Ross Perot in 1992, only because I didn't like Bush One, and didn't trust Bill Clinton. Thank God, I now admit that Perot didn't win. The country is in desperate straits so I'm engaged again. For me McCain is a non-starter because even though he claims to be independent, he's too into war, and he'll have to satisfy the Christian right with cabinet appointments (remember Ashcroft), and Supreme Court nominees. And I find Republican economic policies too focused on the concerns of the rich--though I'm financially comfortable. So for me, it's either Obama or Clinton this time. I started following Obama after his thoughtful race speech which impressed me greatly, as I'm a JFK guy, and need some intellect and inspiration from our president. Caught the last 50 minutes of the debate by accident, as I'm on the west coast, and it appeared to me that Hillary Clinton was sharper and more detailed on the policy issues and proposals--which is her strength. Based on what I saw last night, Obama's is going to have to sharpen his game on the non-visionary substantive stuff.

Check out the facts on Bill Clintons pardons list, when he left office ,TWO names on his list are Underground members, Susan Rosenberg and Linda Sue Evans, Clinton pardoned them shortly before leaving office in January 2001.Now maybe Hillary and Bill have had those now famous 'memory lapse' or were just so 'tired' they have forgotten the Clinton connection with terrorists also?Actually the Clinton campaign are puppets for Sean Hannity .Shame that someone who claims they will be the best choice for President turns out to have a really BAD MEMORY PROBLEM!!Again I ask ,WILL HILLARY DENOUNCE BILL'S CRIMES as she has demanded Obama do when it comes to the so called 'friends' he has to denounce to suit her?I am telling American people that they ARE smarter than what Hillary thinks they are.People in PA.have listened to her hog-wash on how she's really a pennslyvanian ,if that is so,why did she move to N/Y instead of PA.?If she cared so much about the people in PA. WHY didn't she HELP them when the Job losses started instead of helping New Yorkers job problems??If you desert YOUR home state you will desert ALL states!!

Maybe it had to do with Obama being Patriotic to this nation

Maybe it had to do with his wife's statement I have never been proud to be an American

Maybe it had to do with his choose of friends a Bomb-Throwing Terrist William Ayers
or Rev Wright the I hate America speech and Tony Rezko

Maybe ABC just wanted to know about Obama's Patriotism too America

Like I ask all of you holier than thou, privileged Americans, TerryfromIndiana...has anyone ever called you a NIGGER? After her own white college room mate refused to room with Mrs. Obama, little wonder why she would be a bit less that "proud" of her country. I know at times I sure ain't. Especially when I hear crybabies like you regurgitate the same 3rd party crap over and over again, comments by people NOT running for office, thereby disracting real Americans who care from the pressing issues affecting us today. If you want non-issues like William Ayers, then I suggest you go watch FAUX NEWS...because that shit is played out and I can't stand hearing about it anymore. Grow up. I want to know why HRC is all but proposing WW3, and nobody is talking about it. I want to know why I can't afford to fill my truck with gas. I want to know why my property tax doubled, and my Mortgage went up too. I want to know about why we never see those flag-draped coffins coming home from Iraq, but see Bush/Cheney wearing flag draped pins. And lastly, I really want to know how you, gibson, and Shmeagol on ABC can have the audacity to question the patriotism for a MAN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. How DARE you do such a thing.

war whore and an even older war horse, offering US no choice at all.

Obama says he is not near perfect and he is, after all a politician so

all we loyal Democrats and patriotic Indies can do is HOPE that he

will bring about real CHANGE because we know the other two won't!

Go ahead & show your political naivete and your trollish (t)reasoning,

The more I think about Hillary the more she reminds me of the Barroness in the "Sound of Music". Not a horrible person, but shallow, selfish and not too loving.
She should take the Barroness' clue and realize that he/we are in love with someone else and bow out gracefully.

How generous you are! For the Barroness in the Sound of Music, somewhat shallow, as you point out, nevertheless had a sweetness and vulnerability about her that Hillary does not have.
At all.
That one reason I call her Medea.

Well, I will say that last night was not a good night for Obama. He was pretty much thrown under the bus. He was kept on the defensive and off message. However, Clinton's notation that he is not vetted is complete nonsense and last night proved it. I for one thought that even though he was on the defense he remained calm and in control. He did try to keep his comments above board even though Clinton was being extremely negative. It was a very ugly debate (I use the word "debate" loosely) and he says Umm a lot.

Perhaps the most disturbing part of the evening was listening to Mr. Stephanopoulus ask Mr. Obama if he thought Rev. Wright was more of a patriot than he. Such an obtuse question I'd not heard asked in serious political discourse before and it really caught me off guard. It brought home the point that "the way we do business in Washington(D.C.) is debunked." Why do we, at this late stage, feel the need to quantify our patriotism? And more to the point why do we live in fear of upsetting people who deem it "unpatriotic" to fore go the flag pin? What a sad debate it was. Thankfully, despite reports to the contrary, Mr. McCain doesn't stand a chance.

Senator Obama is running for president of the United States. That means he OUGHT to be patriotic about this nation and the patriotism of anyone being president may always be a concern to American voters.

Obama's got a problem in that his wife and Wright his mentor have laid out the patriotism problem for Obama with their own anti US rants. Wright's been preaching anti US rehtoric and it seems clear Obama's wife believes it. Obama's real problem is he believes the far lefts anti US nationalism agenda and he got caught trying to pander to that line.

So in the case of Obama, I'd say these questions about his anti patriotism belief system is entirely correct and ought to be explored.

Does wearing a flag pin on one's lapel prevent one from lying to the country and engaging in an illegal and immoral war with no end in sight, or trashing the Constitution of the United States, destroying the middle class of America, and perpetuating upon the American people the deception and corruption that the Bush administration has done? Was Dr. Martin Luther King a patriot? He spoke out against and stood for the same things that Reverend Wright does. And perhaps if you walked in the shoes of black Americans or simply understood their plight in America, you would also understand what Michelle Obama meant, rather than simply accept the spin. The only reason Senator Obama is being questioned about his patriotism is because he is a black man with a Muslim name. Wright, Michelle's comments, and people who protested against Vietnam when Senator Obama was eight years old are merely the weapons of choice, with neither substance or credibility, being used to destroy his candidacy and the merest possibility that the leader of our country can be a black man named Barack Hussein Obama. He simply doesn't fit the paradigm of what an American president should be or look like; and some Americans are simply less willing to examine themselves and transform their consciousness, than they are willing to kick him to the curb because he doesn't conform to their small-minded world view.

No, Obama's REAL PROBLEM is fixated morons who continuously harp on 3rd party hogwash, while their country erodes around them. Sticking your head in the sand, or fiddling while Rome burns is fine...that's your business. But when you attempt to denigrate someone who is your one and only chance of, not only change, but jump starting your lazy-ass fellow Americans into DOING SOMETHING FOR THEMSELVES...well, I think you must be insane. there is nothing any of you NASCAR/HRC fans have said here on HuffPost yet that makes much sense when it comes to how we are going to stop the ever-increasing, fatal decline of this country. If you don't care, then fine...but don't try to stop me, and those progressives like me, from stopping this apocolypse.
