PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Rodham Clinton said emphatically Wednesday night that Barack Obama can win the White House this fall, undercutting her efforts to deny him the Democratic presidential nomination by suggesting he would lead the party to defeat.

"Yes, yes, yes," she said when pressed about Obama's electability during a campaign debate six days before the Pennsylvania primary.

Asked a similar question about Clinton, Obama said "Absolutely and I've said so before" _ a not-so-subtle dig at his rival who had previously declined to make a similar statement about him.

In a 90-minute debate, both rivals pledged not to raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000, and said they would respond forcefully if Iran obtains nuclear weapons and uses them against Israel.

"An attack on Israel would incur massive retaliation by the United States," said Clinton.

Obama said, "The U.S. would take appropriate action."

They differed over Social Security when Obama said he favored raising payroll taxes on higher-income individuals. Clinton said she was opposed, her rival quickly cut in and countered that she had said earlier in the campaign she was open to the idea.

Under current law, workers must pay the payroll tax on their first $102,000 in wages. Obama generally has expressed support for a plan to reimpose the tax beginning at a level of $200,000 or more.

Story continues below

The debate was the 21st of the campaign for the nomination, an epic struggle that could last weeks or even months longer.

Pennsylvania, with 158 delegates at stake, is a must-win contest for Clinton, who leads in the polls and hopes for a strong victory to propel her through the other states that vote before the primary season ends on June 3.

Obama leads in the delegate chase, 1,643-1,504, with 2,025 needed for the nomination. And despite a recent gaffe, he picked up endorsements during the day from three superdelegates from a pair of states with primaries on May 6 _ Reps. Andre Carson of Indiana and Mel Watt and David Price of North Carolina.

After primaries and caucuses in 42 of the 50 states, Obama leads his rival in convention delegates, popular votes and states won. She is struggling to stop his drive on the nomination by appealing to party leaders who will attend the convention as superdelegates that he will preside over an electoral defeat at a moment of great opportunity after eight years of Republican rule.

The former first lady has never denied published reports that she once told New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson that Obama couldn't win when he called to tell her he would be endorsing the Illinois senator.

And at a news conference earlier this month in California, Clinton sidestepped when asked directly whether Obama would win if he were the Democratic nominee. "I am sure we will have a united Democratic Party. I will do everything possible to make sure we can win and I am confident we will have a Democrat in the White House next year," she said at the time.

Asked a similar question at the debate, she provided a similar answer at first. "I think we have to beat John McCain and I have every reason to believe we're going to have a Democratic president and it's going to be Barack or me."

Pressed by George Stephanopoulos of ABC News to answer the question directly, she said, "Yes, yes, yes ... Now I think I can do a better job."

In a debate that moved swiftly between politics and policy, Clinton issued a first-ever public apology for having claimed erroneously that she landed in Bosnia under sniper fire in 1996 as first lady.

"I may be a lot of things but I am not dumb," she said, adding that she had written in her book that there had been no gunfire during the episode. She said she was embarrassed by her error. "I'm sorry I said it," she added.

She previously had explained her incorrect comments by saying she had misspoken.

Obama later erred by saying he had never favored a ban on handguns even though as a state Senate candidate in 1996 he filled out a questionnaire from an Illinois voter group saying he would support such a ban.

"My writing wasn't on that particular questionnaire ... as I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns," Obama said, even though his handwritten notes did appear on its front page. The reponse to the question about guns was typed.

Obama had more explaining to do moments later, when he was asked about his controversial comment that small town Americans become bitter because of economic adversity, and "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them" as a result.

He said he was attempting to say that because voters feel ignored by government, "they end up being much more concerned about votes around things like guns where traditions have been passed on from generation to generation. And those are incredibly important to them."

"People don't cling to their traditions on hunting and guns" out of frustration with their government, Clinton said. She added that Obama had a fundamental misunderstanding on the role of religion and faith.

Both Obama and Clinton sidestepped when asked if they would place their rival on the ticket as vice presidential running mate in the fall.

"I think very highly of Senator Clinton's record, but I think it is premature at this point to talk about who the vice presidential candidates will be because we're still trying to determine who the nominee will be," Obama said.

Clinton was similarly noncommittal. "I'm going to do everything I possibly can to make sure that one of us takes the oath of office next January. I think that has to be the overriding goal," she said.

Neither rival was willing to say they would ask President Bush to serve in any capacity after he leaves office. Obama volunteered he would be "more likely to ask the advice of the current president's father. He said, that as president, George H. W. Bush had presided over a "wise foreign policy" at the time the Cold War was ending.

ABC News sponsored and televised the debate, with Charles Gibson and Stephanopoulos moderating.

I just spent the afternoon listening to the rush limbag show (ugh). He spent 2 hours and 19 minutes on Obama, calling him everything from a Radical to a disgrace to humanity. lol During that time he took NO phone calls. He told the audience that the Dems were in trouble and the Superdelegates need to pick a third candidate since neither of these two could win. No why would Rush want a dem to win? He doesn't - He is just afraid Obama will wipe the floor with McCain. I do know this when rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, ABC News (with clinton support George Stephanopolous) , all support Hillary Clinton then Obama has already won. What democrat would pick a candidate that rush is trying to help. gotta love it.

BTW - the debate was a disgrace!

...and George then said "Mr. Obama, what is your take on Lindsey Lohan posing nude? What would your Reverend Wight think? Did you really tell Paris Hilton she can't own a handgun?" What a pair of wingnut idiots.

No need for more debates. Each one we've had is worse than the one before. Hillary wants them just for show.

The fact that they would ask one candidate a stupid question about not wearing a flag pin, while the other candidate was also not wearing one, says it all.

Future advice: stick to msnbc or pbs.

(Gee, I hope I'm commenter #6,000!)

My comment will just get lost here, but I'll say my two cents.

I was so excited about the debate, leading up to the debate...made it home at 7:59, PST, just in time to tune in to ABC! About two minutes in to the "debate", I received an email from another Obama supporter with a "Don't even watch the debate, it will piss you off". They were spot on.

Hillary Clinton seemed dull and dry, kind of "here we go again", but she looked good, appearance-wise, and Barack Obama was not speaking well with numerous "Uh's" over and over again, like he didn't know what to say. I felt like getting all "Toastmasters" on him! What is with the "Uh" between sentences?

Weird lighting of audience looked similar to an episode of CSI Las Vegas--all bluish and weird looking, except for warm-hued spots on various "family and friends"...

I have nothing to say about the "moderators", Mr. Gibson and Mr. Stephanopoulos. Nothing.

John Adams is spinning in his grave.

Let's just get to next Tuesday already...(sigh)

I am a writer/director. I graduated from the London Film School. To your observation that the lighting seemed off: The director of this abysmally produced "debate" cut to reaction shots of audience member Chelsea Clinton that were much more than gratuitous. Ms. Clinton was favored with a warm key light (main wattage light, a spotlight if you will) that cast her in a radiant, angelic composition that allowed her image to "pop" from that of her fellow audience members, who were flatly lit with a fill light (lesser wattage) behind a CTB (blue) gel filter. This unconscionable tactic rendered me literally open-mouthed and stunned beyond belief. These tactics reminded me of Leni Reifenstahl's Nazi propaganda film "Triumph of the Will." (No, I am not equating the Clinton family to Hitler; I am arguing production techniques that are propogandist).

The accusations of ABC News' Clinton bias last night were borne out by this not-so-subliminal lighting technique. The travesty of this production should not therefore be limited to moderators Gibson and Stephanopoulos, but should include the director and producers. The American public were cheated by two self-important moderators doing a hachet job that was supported by their technical team. Deplorable on all levels. I urge everyone who feels similarly to boycott ABC's advertisers. The only way to affect change is to hit Disney-ABC in their overly-stuffed pocketbook.

Get over it! I have a degree in Marketing and have been involved in everything
from product marketing to small political campaigns. Obama has been enjoying
media bias up until recently. Watch CNN or MSNBC also know as ObamaTV. They have always given him the best sound bites and poses that would appear the most preidential. Now that he is geting the same treatment that Clinton was getting for such a long time your upset? Don't you want to know who your votong for or is it just
that you just don't want an older woman with a brain.

I completely agree! George Stephanopolous should be fired and Charlie Gibson should be demoted. ABC / Disney is despicable in my mind.

I plan to and I think there is a big movement to boycott Disney and ABC products. This is a Disney / ABC PR DISASTER in the making. If even 500,000 people boycott / postpone / cancel their summer vacations of going to Disneyworld (presuming that the average family spends only $2,000 there for a vacation) they will lose $1 Billion dollars. If you add on top of that the ad revenue and other revenue losses from other ABC / Disney products that they will lose, they will be really hurting as a company and may see a need to publicly apologize to us the American people and to Barack Obama for the "sham" of a debate.

That is a lot of money (even for a behomoth like Disney / ABC). I say, hit them where it hurts - in the pocketbook.

To that end, I have called the SVP of PR at ABC / Disney, Kevin Brockman's office, and expressed this similar sentiment by talking directly to his assistant. I left my name and phone number and hope to hear back from him in the next 24 hours or so. If I don't hear back from him by the end of the day tomorrow, I will post his direct dialphone number here on Huffington Post so that other people can lodge similar sentiments directly with his office.

SIXTY since Super Tuesday, and it's being announced that MORE are coming out today AFTER THE DEBATE!! Hillary thought she could use this debate to sway super delegates in her favor, and once again, it backfired! To Hillary's dismay, the super delegates saw and heard the same thing we did, and they were obviously not impressed with either Hillary or the moderators who tried to help her.

Wow! Thomas backs Obama? What a suprise!
It's the lack of objectivity that has made this campaign
a circus. At this stage of the game, people are not going to
take his backing seriously.

Who is ABC kidding? Our troops are getting slaughtered at a rate of three a day with no end in sight, record gas prices, a health care crisis, climate change, a recession, assaults on our civil liberties and all ABC cares to discuss is flag pins, an irrelevant trip to Bosnia more than a decade ago, and a Pastor I never head of before.

Two or three more guys will get killed in Iraq today.

But let's talk about flag pins.

Shame on ABC!

Glad I decided to skip the debate last night. Sounds like ABC is up to top standards of hack journalism as usual. (I'm beginning to think only people outside of the media should ask debate questions and only allow the TV media to read prompters and point the camera to the correct person)

I seriously doubt the debate will do anything to sway things at this point. The "bitter" controversy shows that. People aren't interested in tabloid journalism in this election. They are concerned about the war, the economy and the future of America.

The polls continue to turn on Hillary the more negative she goes and so do the voters. Looks like the media is starting to get the same treatment now.

I'll be glad when this all over so whoever wins can focus on taking on McCain and his white whale of faults.
