PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Rodham Clinton said emphatically Wednesday night that Barack Obama can win the White House this fall, undercutting her efforts to deny him the Democratic presidential nomination by suggesting he would lead the party to defeat.

"Yes, yes, yes," she said when pressed about Obama's electability during a campaign debate six days before the Pennsylvania primary.

Asked a similar question about Clinton, Obama said "Absolutely and I've said so before" _ a not-so-subtle dig at his rival who had previously declined to make a similar statement about him.

In a 90-minute debate, both rivals pledged not to raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000, and said they would respond forcefully if Iran obtains nuclear weapons and uses them against Israel.

"An attack on Israel would incur massive retaliation by the United States," said Clinton.

Obama said, "The U.S. would take appropriate action."

They differed over Social Security when Obama said he favored raising payroll taxes on higher-income individuals. Clinton said she was opposed, her rival quickly cut in and countered that she had said earlier in the campaign she was open to the idea.

Under current law, workers must pay the payroll tax on their first $102,000 in wages. Obama generally has expressed support for a plan to reimpose the tax beginning at a level of $200,000 or more.

Story continues below

The debate was the 21st of the campaign for the nomination, an epic struggle that could last weeks or even months longer.

Pennsylvania, with 158 delegates at stake, is a must-win contest for Clinton, who leads in the polls and hopes for a strong victory to propel her through the other states that vote before the primary season ends on June 3.

Obama leads in the delegate chase, 1,643-1,504, with 2,025 needed for the nomination. And despite a recent gaffe, he picked up endorsements during the day from three superdelegates from a pair of states with primaries on May 6 _ Reps. Andre Carson of Indiana and Mel Watt and David Price of North Carolina.

After primaries and caucuses in 42 of the 50 states, Obama leads his rival in convention delegates, popular votes and states won. She is struggling to stop his drive on the nomination by appealing to party leaders who will attend the convention as superdelegates that he will preside over an electoral defeat at a moment of great opportunity after eight years of Republican rule.

The former first lady has never denied published reports that she once told New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson that Obama couldn't win when he called to tell her he would be endorsing the Illinois senator.

And at a news conference earlier this month in California, Clinton sidestepped when asked directly whether Obama would win if he were the Democratic nominee. "I am sure we will have a united Democratic Party. I will do everything possible to make sure we can win and I am confident we will have a Democrat in the White House next year," she said at the time.

Asked a similar question at the debate, she provided a similar answer at first. "I think we have to beat John McCain and I have every reason to believe we're going to have a Democratic president and it's going to be Barack or me."

Pressed by George Stephanopoulos of ABC News to answer the question directly, she said, "Yes, yes, yes ... Now I think I can do a better job."

In a debate that moved swiftly between politics and policy, Clinton issued a first-ever public apology for having claimed erroneously that she landed in Bosnia under sniper fire in 1996 as first lady.

"I may be a lot of things but I am not dumb," she said, adding that she had written in her book that there had been no gunfire during the episode. She said she was embarrassed by her error. "I'm sorry I said it," she added.

She previously had explained her incorrect comments by saying she had misspoken.

Obama later erred by saying he had never favored a ban on handguns even though as a state Senate candidate in 1996 he filled out a questionnaire from an Illinois voter group saying he would support such a ban.

"My writing wasn't on that particular questionnaire ... as I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns," Obama said, even though his handwritten notes did appear on its front page. The reponse to the question about guns was typed.

Obama had more explaining to do moments later, when he was asked about his controversial comment that small town Americans become bitter because of economic adversity, and "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them" as a result.

He said he was attempting to say that because voters feel ignored by government, "they end up being much more concerned about votes around things like guns where traditions have been passed on from generation to generation. And those are incredibly important to them."

"People don't cling to their traditions on hunting and guns" out of frustration with their government, Clinton said. She added that Obama had a fundamental misunderstanding on the role of religion and faith.

Both Obama and Clinton sidestepped when asked if they would place their rival on the ticket as vice presidential running mate in the fall.

"I think very highly of Senator Clinton's record, but I think it is premature at this point to talk about who the vice presidential candidates will be because we're still trying to determine who the nominee will be," Obama said.

Clinton was similarly noncommittal. "I'm going to do everything I possibly can to make sure that one of us takes the oath of office next January. I think that has to be the overriding goal," she said.

Neither rival was willing to say they would ask President Bush to serve in any capacity after he leaves office. Obama volunteered he would be "more likely to ask the advice of the current president's father. He said, that as president, George H. W. Bush had presided over a "wise foreign policy" at the time the Cold War was ending.

ABC News sponsored and televised the debate, with Charles Gibson and Stephanopoulos moderating.

Hillary knows what she's doing. She knows Obama is our Nom. and she getting him ready for the repug, slime machine by Oct. she knows all this s**t will be a non-issue. She's also neutrilizing the MSM, exposing their irrevelence in the face of the American electorate.

At least, that's is what I hope she is doing, for the sake of Bill's legacy.

unfortunately HRC's actions today are part and parcel of that legacy: NOT a deviation.

Well i don't think she is doing it on purpose, but I do think it will have that sort of an effect. If the debate ends up seen as a farce b/c of those questions - which it looks like it is well on it's way - then whenever the repubs bring up those issues, they are now tied to a farce.

Least I hope that made sense. I am tired today.

...................shame, shame on you ABC News!!! In a 90-minute forum, it took 45 minutes for a question of substance to be asked. I cannot believe what passes for news/journalism in America anymore. Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos came across as simple-minded toadies more suitable for "Entertainment Tonight", "The Jerry Springer Show" or Fox News. It was so pathetic that I had to keep fighting the urge to throw up!!

One question, is Stephanopoulos still getting a check from the Clintons??? His Sunday show is slanted so pro-Billary that I need to take Dramamine just to watch it......which I rarely do anymore. Last night, he was so over-the-top even the Dramamine didn't help!!!

......................the only one in the room, last nlight, with any class was OBAMA!!!!!!!

I agree with every thing you are saying. Gibson and Stephanopoulos should go on over to Fox and be Hannity's lap dogs! The SILLIEST thing in my opinion is about that darn lapel pin Obama doesn't wear! Oh, silly me I forgot I'm thinking the war or the economy is what we should be talking about!! I'm so disgusted with the news media I don't know what to do. It is awful.

I hope people will see these two characters for what they are and be for Obama more than ever!

This is what I think. The questions deemed irrelevant by the Obama crowd had been asked before, and it is not as if they were totally new to Obama. Similarly, Hillary was asked some questions again, such as about the Bosnia trip. No one, apparently, heard that Obama, a black candidate, is for putting an end to affirmative action for a certain minority. That, if you are an African American, is an important point. Questions about Obama's associations, a.o. with pastor Wright, or his national pride, it appears to me, are relevant as well. Mr. Obama's comment on foreign relations isssues, ongoing, is interesting enough to keep track of. A week ago he had no comment on Jimmy Carter's trip to meet with Hamas in Syria, as it was, according to Obama, a trip by a private citizen. This week he has changed his mind. Next question to ask Obama is whether it is also irrelevant for U.S. citizens to make private trips and have discussions with Cuba? Some U.S. citizens might even feel that such issues could, on occasion, border on treason, rightly or wrongly. We know everything about Hillary, but Obama is still an unknown quantity. If this guy, who wants to lead the nation, has to be protected against a 60-yr old short lady, no matter how *mean*, one might have legitimate questions on how well he would stand up against the big guys, and other assorted meanies in this world.

ABC didn't host a debate, it was a tabloid disaster. After the first 1/2 hour, I turned it off. This is why the League of Women Voters should handle the debates.

By the way, all the fuss about Obama not wearing a Chinese made, American flag pin - has anyone noticed that Hillary doesn't wear one either/ If ABC wanted to be fair, shouldn't she have been asked about her lack of proper patriotic pins?

If ABC had wanted to be fair, they'd have had someone else sponsor the debate, and they'd have made certain that Gibson and Stephanopoulos were on a slow boat to China.

Gosh, can I be a Liberal now? I've put aside critical, independent thinking, started calling people names when they disagree with me, and now I've got the "Nazi-thing" down. What else is there?

At the Risk of Repeating Myself I am re-Posting My Comment For Hil-LIAR-Y Supporters. Please Respond to what Hil-LIAR-y is Suggesting.

Heres a New one I do not see being addressed here.

After they both agreed that Our Military has been stretched to it's limits Hil-LIAR-Y says she wants to provide a Blanket of Security for not JUST Israel but Other Nations as well & She Suggests that the USA deliver MASSIVE RETALIATION on those who would harm those Nations!

Any One Else Think she's Out Of Her EFFFING MIND or is it just ME????

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:18 PM on 04/17/2008

YES! I agree completely. I thought this was the only remarkable moment of the entire so-called "debate". Does Hillary have any CLUE what she is talking about!?

Is she suggesting that we are going to enter a security pact with Saudi Arabia?! That is certainly what it sounded like.

Does she even realize that "massive retaliation" normally refers to a nuclear strike?!

Please GOD keep her away from that WH phone at 3 am - PLEASE!

Keith Olbermann mentioned that last night and said he would cover it more in depth tonight on Countdown.

Madow made an interesting comment about the first hour attack on Obama. She said people keep saying he's untested, they don't know if he can stand up to the Republican attacks in the fall. Well he just proved he could remain calm and in control no matter what was thrown at him. Good point.

Profs. Walt and Meersheimer would probably agree. If they haven't been "extraordinarily rendered" yet. Haven't heard from them for awhile. Hope they're OK.

Hill is pathological. She's not conceding, in hopes of muddying Barack or in hopes he will make some horrible mistake.

Her behaviour now is laying the groundwork for another run in 2012. She's doing this hoping she'll help McCain.

She figures if Barack loses, she'll be able to get the nomination in 2012.

Dream on , Goldwater Girl!

Israel already has the nuclear capacity to eliminate half of the populations of Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordon and Lebanon within the next hour. Adding our nuclear throw-weight to Israel's ability to retaliate to a first strike by Iran is preposterous posturing - between the both of us we can kill all Iranians only once. So you're correct, Cindy. Just what the hell is Hillary's motive here? Is it just saber-rattling for domestic consumption, or is this HER idea of how SHE can dot the Persian Gulf with permanent bases?

To the poster praising Chuck Todd, unfortunately "ChuckyT" is one of the toadies who helps lower expectations for Clinton. She started with a 30 point lead in Pennsylvania and she was supposed to win by at least 20 points. Two weeks later they (being balloon heads that travel the network circuits) reduced it to 15 points with help from Clinton campaign spin memos. Two weeks later they follow Clinton talking points that she only needs to win by 9 or 10 points. Now, it's the last week of the primary and the asshats are saying she only needs to win by 4 or 5 points. LMAO that every time it looks like Obama is going to meet the bar they change the standards. Chuck Todd is just as bad as all the others and from his C-Span days, I recognize him as a total republican operative but maybe the Bush legacy has moved him to the left as it has many former repubs.

I think Obama's association with Kevin Bacon and elitist hollywood values needs to be explored some more before it erupts in the General Election. Also Clinton's ties to Kevin Bacon and his crappy band need to be exposed as the threat to our nation that it is. And McCain can't claim immunity on the national security crisis that is Kevin Bacon's relationship with him, Cindy and his entire campaign. The media really needs to get to the bottom of the Global Hollywood Elitist Caliphate that Kevin Bacon and his legion of 6 billion associates want to impose on the U.S. I predict, that the General Election will be won or lost, depending on what REALLY is in Kevin Bacon's trash. Be afraid.

ABC's Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopolous are poor excuses for journalists.
This hack job done on Obama, while hiding behind Constitutional snippets to do their dirty work,
was just dispicable. That was not vetting! That was inviting someone into your home, putting them at a huge disadvantage, then raping them repeatedly, with the person who envies them the most standing by to watch!

Rachel Maddow made the point on Olbermann last night that ABC was pulling a sort of bait-and-switch by having a voiceover reading parts of the Constitution that neither Gibson or Stephanopolous asked about. You're right--that's not vetting and we deserve better.

Hubris. Hillbillies were caught flat footed when Barack announced first and never seemed to grasp his extraordinary appeal as a candidate.

Their inner racist held them in denial for a long while. They said Hill would have it wrapped up Feb. 5.

Then Penn & Co. cranked up the various smear campaigns. They have been ineffectual so far.

She is going to keep slinging the mud hoping that if she can't get nominated--which she can't--she will tarnish the Barack sufficiently that he'll lose in Nov. and she can run again in 2012.
