UPDATE: ABC News' has disputed this account of events, saying that the impetus for last night's Weather Underground queries stemmed from an April 10th post on Jake Tapper's "Political Punch" blog: "The article was the basis for the question and George and Charlie had discussed it in advance of the Hannity interview."

___

The unseen influence of Fox News wormed its way into tonight's nominally ABC-hosted debate, when Senator Barack Obama was asked to account for his tenuous connections to former Weather Underground leader William Ayers, who famously began a New York Times article with this statement: ''I don't regret setting bombs...I feel we didn't do enough.''*

The question was posed by George Stephanopoulos, who neither conceived of the question himself, nor disclosed the primary source of his donated inquiry: Fox News talking head Sean Hannity.

The blogosphere has been up on this from jump street. On Tuesday, Democratic Underground was among the first to note that Stephanopoulos was "Taking Notes From Sean Hannity for Tomorrow Night's Debates":

Hannity asked George what kinds of questions they'll be asking at the debate tomorrow and they discussed a few things. When Hannity asked about the first question below about Ayers and whether George had plans to ask such a question, George replied, "Well, I'm taking notes now Sean." It did actually sound like he was pausing to take notes. And Hannity continued to feed him more:

1) Ask Obama about his relationship with Ayers and WeatherUnderground and Axelrod's comments, "They're friendly"

2) Ask Obama why he attended the Million Man March

From there, DailyKos jumped on the story like a pissed-off mouse on cheese, breaking an important update along the way:

ABC contacted UIC for a photo of Ayers to be used tonight. Granted, this may be simply for the sake of having it on hand, but it seemed pretty clear that it IS going to be coming up in the debate.
Story continues below

Perhaps unused to receiving such a strong dose of the harsh stuff from the media (or unprepared - is there no one at the Obama campaign that's reading DailyKos?), Obama passed on the opportunity to knock ABC for asking the question. He offered a game enough response, noting that he was on friendly terms with Republican Senator Tom Coburn, who once advocated for the application of the death penalty to the providers of legal abortions:

OBAMA: Do I need to apologize for Mr. Coburn's statements? Because I certainly don't agree with those, either. So this kind of game in which anybody who I know, regardless of how flimsy the relationship is, that somehow their ideas could be attributed to me, I think the American people are smarter than that. They're not going to suggest somehow that that is reflective of my views, because it obviously isn't.

MSNBC's Keith Olberman was one of the few in the traditional media to note the Hannity connection to Stephanopoulous' question.

[WATCH.]

*An interesting point about this Ayers article: an extra dose of damnation has been laid on this statement because the article in which it appears carries the dateline of September 11, 2001, as if to say the statement is trebly offensive because it coincided with that tragic day. But these criticisms are insincere: obviously, the article was slated to go to press before the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, and was available at newsstands in advance of the attacks as well. As our own Rachel Sklar pointed out tonight, no one from the New York Times was covering any other beat on September 11th other than the terrorist attacks.

YOWZER! What a bunch of cry babies the Obamanites and their supporters are. To see and hear comments from the media this morning you would have thought SHE (and Charlie & George) crusified their savior. This was by far the best debate so far as information that was previously off-limits for Obama was finally brought into the light. These simple questions were an example of what the menominee will face this fall and Clinton not only handled her part beautifully but hit hard on the return. Obama looked flustered, muttered, and tried but failed to change the subject to his stump talking points. And if you think for one moment that FOX news will not play a part in the debate this fall, think again.

It looks to me like the liberals want only those who are in the tank for Obama (this post, dkos, MSNBC) to be moderators or commentators so their candidate wins looking like a rock star. Sorry folks, but he's playing with the big boys (and girls) and should be able to hold his own without help from the media.

After watching this fiasco for months its plain to see that the debates this fall will feature the one and only "Barack OBAMA" vs John McCain - the proud to be an American and tell it like it is candidate. The money is backing McCain, even though the far right hates him, but Wall Street and military men talk, while Obama walks.

You are right about the repubicans tactics in the general, but the problem is this isn't the general election and the moderators were supposed to be neutral and Clinton is supposed to be a democrat. I have np problem with candidates being asked tough questions during debates, in fact I hope they are. But I also expect the questions to be about relevant issues not tabloidy type questions that sound like TMZ not ABC. There used to be ethics and standards that journalists held dear, but they seem to have abandoned them for sensationalism. The voters who tuned in to learn about the issues that will affect our lives were cheated. The MSM seems to think we are not intelligent enough to hear about real issues and that we are interested in this gossipy crap they are feeding us. We were disrespected and so were the candidates. I only hope we and the democratic party make it clear that such behavior is unacceptable and that we the people demand to be treated as the intelligent adults we are.

Hannity needs to question Newt about Newts Eighty-four ethics charges that were filed against Gingrich during his term. Then theres Rove who was a tech-savvy puppet master for Bush.In 2002 Rove staged a smear 'campaign ' against John McCain with false stories such as : McCain was a stoolie for his captors in the Hanoi Hilton (this from a lunatic self-promoting Vietnam "veteran"); McCain fathered a black daughter out of wedlock (a despicable reference to McCain's adopted Bangladeshi daughter); Cindy McCain's drug "abuse"; and even McCain's "homosexuality."Oh yes Sean Hannity keeps company with the best including Hal Turner.Hannity slides by his 'smear' campaigns on the grounds that he is not running for President,BUT Hannity should be held accountable for his smear campaigns AGAINST Presidents. As he IS so AMERICAN or so he claims to be .IF you are LOYAL to THIS COUNTRY ,you are loyal to it's commander in chief, even if you do not agree with their policies.I respect the TITLE of the President of the USA,so I respect the person holding that title.I may not respect that persons policies tho. With all due respect for Mr.Hannity as a human being ,Hannity needs to be fired from Fox along with Newt, and Rove and North because they lack MORALS right?Ollies track record and the Iran-Contra scandals. http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB113/index.htm Yes Hannity 'chums' with the best of morally 'elite'

Good point except for one thing. Bush is the commander in chief of the armed forces, not the commander in chief of this country. Hannity says this all the time "Our commander in chief" and it is a f***kin joke. I know that litlle beady-eyed weasel would love bush to be our dictator, but he hasn't completely pulled that off yet. I am not loyal to Bush in anyway shape or form. I don't have to be loyal to that horrible excuse of a human to be loyal to this country.

Hannity may have spoon fed the questions concerning Ayers,as all that has been on Hannitys show for several weeks IS Ayers or the Reverend Wrights comments .All Hannity has done is smear Obama and ranting about Obama being guilty by association (Hannity and Ollie North are VERY close friends)because he once was present at speeches that Ayers was also present at and was on the board of a group that Ayers was also on (according to Hannitys standards we should condemn Hannity for working for Fox because Rove and Newt and ,North also work for the SAME company....If people are going to start smearing ANYONE for being guilty by association ,why has Hannity not been smeared because of his with Rove and Cheating Newt and criminal Ollie North ?Newt Gingrich has been married three times. He married Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher, when he was 19 years old she was seven years his senior at 26 years old .After an alleged affair with Ann Manning in 1977, Gingrich sought a divorce from Battley. That was finalized in 1981.In 1981, Gingrich wed Marianne Ginther, to whom he remained married until 2000, the same year Gingrich had an affair with a then 33-year-old Congressional staffer, Callista Bisek. He and Bisek were married in 2000 and currently reside in http://www.counterpunch.org/madsen1101.html1101.html.)Continued below

Does this perhaps portend a buyout of ABC News by Rupert Murdoch?

Oh yes stop by and see this! God bless Father Pfleger. Attention Democrats last night marked the second time Hillary told me she wouldn't go to my church! I wonder if Cynthia McKinney, Ralph Nader, or heck even John McCain would. I must say if you would walk out of my church on ethical reasons I wont vote for you. Of course Billery only seems to have that problem when it is convenient to them. The moment Bill gets caught with his DNA on another ladies dress I'm sure they won't have problems attending again..

This is a good video that needs to be seen by folks that care about the truth. I am a Chicagoan on the southside and I have followed Fr Pfleger for years at St Sabina's church and know him to be an honest and dedicated social advocate. Right or left, the truth is the truth, and Fr Pfleger speaks truth.

Maybe gibson and stephanopulos will recieve services rendered by getting Bill Clintons payment of 800.000. oo from the columbia for pushing their treaty. it's a shame if any REAL AMERICANS even the Republicans stand beside what abc did and said last night! I call upon All americans, including Mccain and his party to say "NO MORE" to this kind of filthy gutter politics that abc commentary committed last night! mccain said he did not want gutter politics! Let's see just what he stands for or if he'll stand silent! I'll lose all respect for him if he stands by silently!

Right...the Clinton operative is such a strong supporter of Hannity's views that he writes down everything Sean says and uses it. all. the. time.

BTW...is it so wrong to ask Obama about ANOTHER questionable relationship of his?(note his 20 year ties to his spiritual leader/mentor and originally saying he was not aware of his views) Does it go to judgement? I mean, if libs could somehow tie McVeigh to McCain, you people would be nattering on about it non-stop.

If George did indeed get his question(s) from Hannity at FOX news, ABC should consider firing him "This Week". He needs FOX News to give him questions at his own debate? Amazingly incompetent. Boycott ABC NEWS. This was a pathetic spectacle.
Read Tom Shales of the Washington Post on the debate. His review of George and Charlie is scathing.

I listen to Hannity, and he has been railing on this Weather Underground thing for months. Obama only knows Ayers because they live in the same subdivision and they both served on a board of a company in which Obama is not the CEO and does not hire/fire employees, and the board hardly ever meets. I live in a golf course subdivision with 2,500 homes and know 50 of my neighbors. Should I be held responsible for malicious acts performed by each and every neighbor during the course of their lifetimes? Do I need to move away if one of them committed a crime 40 years ago?

Somebody needs to do a background check on every person that lives in Sean Hannity's neighborhood and who has ever worked with Hannity. Fair is fair, right?

Well if one did conduct any king of investigation, one need only go as far as Hal Turner. This neo Nazi is Hannity's friend, and if you want to talk about associations? Well he certainly has not rejected and denounced him. That's America, patriots questioned by nazis.

Hannity didn't seem too concerned that Prescott Bush was one of many American industrialists that gave money to Hitler during WWII. I wonder why this bugs him now?

Shame on the mass media and most recently ABC news. I've been watching you all very closely and am deeply disappointed. What about the Bosnia LIE. And even though he was given the opening, he actually defended his Senate colleague. He's said it on many occasion, how he was friends with her before and he'll be friends with her long after, but she makes it real difficult. Still doing and saying anything.
And why no questions posed to her about Colombia? Penn? Her failure to fact check the stories about dead pregnant women? Her suckie campaign that can't pay it's debts? The 109M? Donations to the Clinton libraby? Her forgetfulness apparently because she's 60 and it's late at night? And please, stop showing that viper hag Chelsea? That stupid elitist smile of hers is truly repulsive. I'm all for a good healthy debate, but when you have George as a surrogate for Sean, well, we have to draw the line somewhere, don't we? Or, is this just "Silly Season" continued?
