UPDATE: ABC News' has disputed this account of events, saying that the impetus for last night's Weather Underground queries stemmed from an April 10th post on Jake Tapper's "Political Punch" blog: "The article was the basis for the question and George and Charlie had discussed it in advance of the Hannity interview."

___

The unseen influence of Fox News wormed its way into tonight's nominally ABC-hosted debate, when Senator Barack Obama was asked to account for his tenuous connections to former Weather Underground leader William Ayers, who famously began a New York Times article with this statement: ''I don't regret setting bombs...I feel we didn't do enough.''*

The question was posed by George Stephanopoulos, who neither conceived of the question himself, nor disclosed the primary source of his donated inquiry: Fox News talking head Sean Hannity.

The blogosphere has been up on this from jump street. On Tuesday, Democratic Underground was among the first to note that Stephanopoulos was "Taking Notes From Sean Hannity for Tomorrow Night's Debates":

Hannity asked George what kinds of questions they'll be asking at the debate tomorrow and they discussed a few things. When Hannity asked about the first question below about Ayers and whether George had plans to ask such a question, George replied, "Well, I'm taking notes now Sean." It did actually sound like he was pausing to take notes. And Hannity continued to feed him more:

1) Ask Obama about his relationship with Ayers and WeatherUnderground and Axelrod's comments, "They're friendly"

2) Ask Obama why he attended the Million Man March

From there, DailyKos jumped on the story like a pissed-off mouse on cheese, breaking an important update along the way:

ABC contacted UIC for a photo of Ayers to be used tonight. Granted, this may be simply for the sake of having it on hand, but it seemed pretty clear that it IS going to be coming up in the debate.

Perhaps unused to receiving such a strong dose of the harsh stuff from the media (or unprepared - is there no one at the Obama campaign that's reading DailyKos?), Obama passed on the opportunity to knock ABC for asking the question. He offered a game enough response, noting that he was on friendly terms with Republican Senator Tom Coburn, who once advocated for the application of the death penalty to the providers of legal abortions:

OBAMA: Do I need to apologize for Mr. Coburn's statements? Because I certainly don't agree with those, either. So this kind of game in which anybody who I know, regardless of how flimsy the relationship is, that somehow their ideas could be attributed to me, I think the American people are smarter than that. They're not going to suggest somehow that that is reflective of my views, because it obviously isn't.

MSNBC's Keith Olberman was one of the few in the traditional media to note the Hannity connection to Stephanopoulous' question.

[WATCH.]

*An interesting point about this Ayers article: an extra dose of damnation has been laid on this statement because the article in which it appears carries the dateline of September 11, 2001, as if to say the statement is trebly offensive because it coincided with that tragic day. But these criticisms are insincere: obviously, the article was slated to go to press before the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, and was available at newsstands in advance of the attacks as well. As our own Rachel Sklar pointed out tonight, no one from the New York Times was covering any other beat on September 11th other than the terrorist attacks.

Take the high road and be proactive: donate to the Obama campaign immediately.

I have -- and I suggest that everyone else do the same. Nothing like voting with your wallet, to show the HUGE spike in donations in the 24 hours post-debate.

Many of us are used to the Internet and the freedom it gives us. We know there are many sides to a story not to mention outright lies. But the MSM is still suffering from an antiquated belief that they can manipulate us and, accordingly, alter our perceptions of political reality. But the graffito is on the wall, we are not going to take it anymore. We have taken the red pill (The Matrix).

It is a sad day when George Stephanopoulis and Charlie Gibson decide to swim with Sean Hannity, in the septic tank, far beneath journalism's dank, musty, vermin infested basement.....FOX NEWS!!

Oblermann is the most smartest anchor that's I've seen that's why his rating are so....high because he honest. Hillary will sell her soul to the devil just to become the nominee but it's not going to work. Obama is going to mop the floor with McCain during the general election. As they say Bush and McCain are connected by the hip. Like Morning Joe and Chris Mathews said today: They can see Hillary as a prime minister or majority speack fro the Democratic but if she had prepared a clean campaign she probably be in the lead right now but she pissed off some of her supporters based on the debate last night.

Obama did great last night after being tag team by two commentators and snake.

Get real. There is NO way that Obama will win against McCain. It's a lost cause. Current polling shows McCain slaughtering Obama in a general election. And no, I'm not a Republican, I despise both parties equally.

I think that most people posting on websites , like this one, must live in metro areas and have NO clue whatsoever about middle America and the "fly-over" states. There is no way in HELL that they will ever vote for a black man as President These people simply lie to pollsters, because they don't have the nerve to admit to being racists.

If they really wanted to win, the DNC should have forced Hillary out of the race months ago, the way that the GOP obviously did with Romney. The Dems have stupidly been doing the hard work of damaging each other, all to the benefit of the Republican party, for months now.

Not that any of it really makes any difference. They are ALL corrupt, regardless of party affiliation and they are ALL in the pocket of numerous anti-American groups such as AIPAC and the CFR.

McCain's a weak candidate. Obama (if he can finish strong, not too battered) will not only beat him, but might change the electoral college map.

"Current polling shows McCain slaughtering Obama in a general election."

What polls would these be? National polls have McCain just pulling into a deadheat with Obama, thanks to the drawn out Democratic slugfest. McCain is doing well simply because the media is focusing on the Democrats and not on his gaffes. McCain's moment under the media spot light will come, and he will wilt, just as every other candidate does. The Presidential race has not yet begun.

The weatherman? Are you kidding? So what happened forty years ago is truely relevant to the war in Iraq, the economy, etc. I think that is a real stretch. Also, it sounds like you are a little bitter about the fact that Obama has almost 1.5 MILLION contributors. We are not a cult, we are Americans.

The last thing the rich want, is someone like Obama coming along and telling people that they can change the status quo -- that's why George & Charlie & Fox news are all teaming up against him.

And Hillary's their biggest cheerleader!

She raps Barack for not being sensitive to the average guy or gal, then gets in bed with the right-wing pschopaths who've done everyhting in their powers to destroy the middle class!!! Incredible!!!

What arrogance! What hypocricsy!

And how typical of spoiled rich people who don't have a fucking clue!

Fine, let them ask whatever of Obama. but AT LEAST they could have been fair about it and asked Clinton about Penn and Bill's connection with the Colombian government and if THAT was a conflict of interest. Why didn't they ask her about Peter Paul whose trial is coming up if there going to bring up Ayers?

If you were trying to appear biased, slanted and repugnant ABC, you succeeded. You truly did the American voters a disservice last night. You had the opportunity to turn this debate into something that focused on policy issues, where the candidates stood on those issues, what they can do to improve our domestic and foreign policy standing, but you FAILED miserably.

You had the opportunity to better inform voters in PA about IMPORTANT issues that MATTER to everyday AMERICANS, but you FAILED MISERABLY.

excellent points....the bias against Obama was and is evident, George Stepanopolus has a conflict of interest and apparently is taking instruction from Hannity who is a well known dope and chicken-hawk, chicken-shit at Fox... Gibbon was a bit better but by a hair... these two proved themselves to be grossly overpaid national enquirer type minds, going for the sensational gossip rather than any substance, and as you say, they let Clinton slide and when after Obama... shows who the republicans want to run against in Nov.... not Obama...Democrats should take notice.

Sean Hannity is a CROSS BURNING FLAME THROWING NEO-NAZI RACIST. That George S. would take talking points from him is no surprise. George as part of the BILLARY GANG, will "pimp themselves out" to ANYONE to trash Barack Obama.

Corporate media is holding their powder on Clinton on the chance she gets the nomination. Got to have some good ammo to help their boy, John McCain closer to the general election.

The silly season is long, like baseball. They have to parcel out their personal attacks to the greatest effect. They're recycling Wright, like a bench player. Ayers is a minor league prospect that's being given a shot at the big show. Flag lapel pin: the slightly worn-out, almost over-the-hill outfielder who used to hit 'em out of the park. Eventually he'll be sent down for good.

Believe me, if miracles happen, and Hillary gets the nod, Snuffalopagus (and ll the punditocracy) will be on Hannity's hotline plenty. They're licking their chops at the prospect of going against her; it's their only chance to get the old man into the White House.

George Stephanopolos should never have been allowed to moderate this debate. He is a former Clinton White House employee. How is he supposed to be impartia?

And he wasn't.

I'll tell you what sucks abou this. Hannity will wear this as a badge of honor. He will rant for weeks about this because Stephanopoulos just gave Sean Hannity a voice in the Democratic election. No one enjoys patting themselves on the back more than Hannity and you can expect 3 hours of it tomorrow and for days, weeks and months to come.

It's disappointing, to say the least, that ABC is acting as a shill for Fox News, if not infuriating. What happened to responsibility in journalism? ABC News did a disservice tonight for all the Pennsylvanians that tuned in to learn more about the subtleties of the candidates positions.

and this is why i only consume independent news sources, and read blogs... it impossible to get quality out of most mainstream media sources

if you guys want to listen to actual news and criticism of the candidates, you should try publicly funded news sources like therealnews.com and democracynow.com .... ill admit that they are not as fun as mainstream media, but they offer bare bones unbiased news

Facts, and truth, are clearly radioactive at ABC. I wouldn't log onto a website they run to determine the 'results' of a go kart race.
