Going into tonight's debate in Philadelphia, the two millionth one we've had so far this primary season, I had one significant worry: that the bulk of the time would be taken up with process questions and media obsessions, and that issues of import would end up getting sidelined. As it turns out, I was depressingly, distressingly correct. In fact, there were times when tonight's debate ventured into territory so utterly asinine that I could scarcely believe what I was witnessing.

Twas not until the nine-o'clock hour drew nigh that a single issue-oriented question was asked. The entire first hour was dedicated to silly campaign queries and scandals both du jour and d'antan. Before a single question was posed about the War in Iraq or the economy was asked, the viewing audience had to wade through the following:

Any chance at a "Dream Ticket?"

"Bitter, much?"

"Do you think your opponent stands a chance against McCain?"

"What about Reverend Wright?"

"Wait. I have an even stupider question about Reverend Wright."

"Seriously. Who were you fooling with that Bosnia shizz?"

Story continues below
advertisement

"Hey, Hussein! Why no American flag lapel pin?"

"Hey, Sean Hannity wanted me to ask you something, Barack! I got a question on the Weather Underground! Maybe later we'll talk about the Symbionese Liberation Army!"

All of these questions have been beaten to a pulp, grim death. And neither candidate really had anything new to add to the responses they've already offered time and time again. It was as if ABC News, left out of the twenty-four hour news cycle that spawned these zombo-droid queries, needed to get in their licks on the same matters, too, just so they could feel like they'd played a part in every last one of the primary season's glittering inanities.

Why in the world George Stephanopoulos felt compelled to ask Barack Obama if Reverend Wright "loved America" after he had already been made to give another recitation of his repudiation of Wright's remarks is a question that simply defies the imagination. What sort of sensible answer can be given to that question? It would require astral projection to properly gauge another man's emotional state. And if you want to ask Hillary Clinton to account for the odd contortions she advanced on the matter of her Bosnia recollections, just sack up and ask. Don't hide behind the additional, pointless cruelty of a random voter's scoldings that Clinton lost their vote. What a wholly superfluous pile on!

And the flag lapel pin question came with this admonishment from Charles Gibson: "It keeps coming up, again and again." Well, no shit, Charlie! It keeps "coming up, again and again" because the media resolutely refuses to obtain the necessary courage to stop doing so.

Gibson and Stephanopoulos did deign to squeeze in a few questions of substance, on the Iraq War, taxes, Iran's nuclear ambitions, gun control, and energy independence. But it was quite clear that the moderators could have cared less about the content of the candidate's responses. Instead, they concerned themselves with pinning Obama and Clinton down on a series of absurd "pledges," for the purpose, no doubt, of providing the "gotcha" questions of tomorrow.

To their credit, Clinton and Obama were thoughtful enough to broach the topic of the housing market. Good thing! It didn't occur to the moderators to ask!

The string of issue-oriented questions didn't last long. The debate concluded with a question on how the candidates would "use" George W. Bush in the future. (As a hat-rack, maybe?) And the invitation to make a closing statement required each candidate to imagine how they would win the support of a superdelegate. Process nonsense to the end.

Throughout the night, ABC returned from commercials with bumpers that featured random quotes from the Constitution, because something, apparently, needed to substitute for gravitas.

Like I said, there have been several thousand of these debates. Most, I've watched. Many, I've covered or liveblogged. A few, I have sat very still, and hoped for the sweet release that only the icy hand of death can provide. Tonight was the first time I would have dearly loved to see Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama team up and turn the tables on their interrogators.

Before ABC signed off for the evening, Gibson heard a reaction from the audience and observed, "The crowd is turning on me."

If only they'd done so sooner.

This debate was a Shame for ABC, I boycott

I am a writer/director. I graduated from the London Film School. The director of this abysmally produced "debate" cut to reaction shots of audience member Chelsea Clinton that were much more than gratuitous. Ms. Clinton was favored with a warm key light (main wattage light, a spotlight if you will) that cast her in a radiant, angelic composition that allowed her image to "pop" from that of her fellow audience members, who were flatly lit with a fill light (lesser wattage) behind a CTB (blue) gel filter. This unconscionable tactic rendered me literally open-mouthed and stunned beyond belief. These tactics reminded me of Leni Reifenstahl's Nazi propaganda film "Triumph of the Will." (No, I am not equating the Clinton family to Hitler; I am arguing production techniques that are propogandist).

The accusations of ABC News' Clinton bias this evening were borne out by this not-so-subliminal lighting technique. The travesty of this production should not therefore be limited to moderators Gibson and Stephanopoulos, but should include the director and producers. This is not 1939 Nazi Germany and we are not bleeting sheep. The American public were cheated by two self-important moderators doing a hachet job that was supported by their technical team. Deplorable on all levels. I urge everyone who feels similarly to boycott ABC's advertisers. The only way to affect change with a super-conglomerate like Disney-ABC is to hit them in their overly-stuffed pocketbook.

It was a production straight out of "the Ministry of Truth" from Orwell's 1984.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:38 AM on 04/17/2008

Had the candidates accepted the invitation to the science debate instead of the corporate ABC debate, this travesty would never have occures. I blame both candidates for putting themselves in this position. And ABC for an embarassing evening.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:24 AM on 04/17/2008

Both candidates? Clinton had a soapbox.
No questions on:
Her Iraq vote
Clombia trade deal and Bill, Penn, and Wolfson
Her "I spoke out against Iraq before Barack Obama did".
Her denial she ever supported NAFTA

The ONLY question was Bosnia, she tried - "I'll try toget more sleep" crap - and Obama let her off!!!!!!!
NO follow-up questions like they did with Wright, or guns, or the friggin' falg lapel pin!

What trash it was.

I fear it appealed to Clinton's base - the dumbed-down.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:43 AM on 04/17/2008

"Obama let her off!!!!!!!"

As well he should have. It's not his job to be as petty as she's been. Her Bosnia lies have been vetted and it's been demonstrated quite clearly that she lied multiple times and only reversed herself (without any acknowledgement of wrongdoing) when it was proven with video that she had deliberately lied multiple times about her "experience."

Obama is pushing to raise the bar of political discussion in this country. He's not going to do so by beating a long dead horse on national television.

It is starkly apparent to all of us out here in the real world that the big story was not the performance of the two candidates, but the horrid performance of the third major participant in the "debate", the ABC moderators.

But you wouldn't know it from the rest of the television coverage. Maybe they are being polite by choosing to ignore the big elephant in the room. Or maybe they are ashamed for their colleagues and for their profession.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:58 AM on 04/17/2008

You would have known it if you watched MSNBC after the "debate" They made much reference to it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:10 AM on 04/17/2008

Not this morning, they actually have the nerve to analyze the performance of the candidates of this debacle of a debate.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:50 AM on 04/17/2008

Well, at least Saturday Nite Live won't have to turn it into a parody.
You can't parody what is already parody.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:37 AM on 04/17/2008

No, but they will be able to turn it into a farce. Although, admittedly, that won't take much turning.

I knew it was a mistake ... even before I started. I gave up on commercial television years ago, but there I was, thinking, "Maybe, just maybe, ABC could pull the media up out of the mud long enough to do justice to a presidential race which promises to define the 21st century." Wrong! Slap in the face wrong! I've been reading words like "travesty," "disgusting," "unforgiveable."

I'm sorry, but that's not even close. Stephanopoulos was at his absolute worst. Not that he has ever been terribly good, but this performance was so much like dog droppings on my lawn that I could hardly bear to watch. It was a credit to both Obama and Clinton that they held in there and managed to finish what was arguably the worst performance in television history.

Justice would be a 50 point drop in ABC stock tomorrow morning. I'll be looking for it!

Charlie Gibson began tonight's festivities with a statement that Mario Cuomo thinks the party can unify behind a joint Obama-Clinton/Clinton-Obama ticket. Mr. Gibson pondered to each candidate, "Why not?" Mr. Cuomo and Mr. Gibson must be the only two people in this hemisphere who don't know that such a ticket is impossible because neither candidate will yield top-dog status to the other, neither candidate likes one another, and both constituencies hate the opposite candidate. Senator Clinton feels Senator Obama is not ready (no matter what she said tonight); Senator Obama feels Senator Clinton and her tactics represent all that is wrong in Washington politics. This ridiculous hypothetical set the tone for a truly dreary, amateurishly moderated debate. Man, man, man!

thank you for this information

bloggers we all need to get on the emails and telephone to let George S and Charlie Gibson clearly know what a total hatchet job they did this evening. I was sickened by these two moderators.

George S needed to excuse himself due to serious conflicts of interest for all those years he was one of the Clinton thugs.

don't say you are going to do it. let ABC know loud and clear this one is going to cost them economically and with ratings, and perhaps Disney should also feel the heat

"how the candidates would "use" George W. Bush in the future"?

Too bad Obama didn't say "Skin him and use him as a rug at the entrance to Independence Hall in Philadelphia.".

Seems only right, given how Bush has spent all of these years wiping his feet on our Constitution.

This was really a great night for Obama.

Every time Clinton goes on the attack her negatives go up and Obama's favorables go up.

Tomorrow he will get a bump because she went on the attack and he will get a huge bump because ABC attacked him.

His supporters will give more money so he can defend himself.

It will be the talk on Cable TV as they will want to be better than ABC so they will trash the debate. The news papers hate TV for their declining circulation so they will rag on ABC.

I just don't think it can get any better than this. Oh wait, it can be better even Pat Buchanan thought Obama was targeted.

Ed Rendell thought Obama was targeted too. Perhaps viewers might express some sympathy for Obama for the pile on he got.

And why the constant cutaways to Chelsea ? And why is it that whenever Clinton speaks, the camera stays on her, but when Obama speaks ,the camera keeps cutting away ?

Worst. Debate. Ever

I thought I was watching "Are you smarter than a fifth grader". The questions were embarassing.
It's going to take a while for ABC to live this one down. Having said that, it almost looked like there was colusion between Hillary, Charley, and George. It was silly and dumb against smart, and the Senator from Illinois did himself proud. At times it seemed Obama was trying to throw them a lifeline, but, (and I'm sorry to put it this way), the three stooges just carried on like they had good sense. The worst excuse for a debate yet, There was only one winner tonight. Obama.

God ... can it get any lamer or embarrassing than questions from the media ... grown men about the wearing of lapel pins as criteria for electing the next President. The rest of the world watches America, and Americans debating the wearing of lapel pins as a consideration as to who should be the next President! The next President will be the one who wears the lapel pin! Now the rest of the world KNOWS exactly how and why George Bush got to be President of the US, and elected to a second term.
