Obama Element

RALEIGH, N.C. — Democratic Sen. Barack Obama dismissively talked about his debate with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and the line of questioning from ABC News' moderators, arguing that it focused on political trivia at the expense of the problems facing average voters.

At a rally in the May 6 primary state of North Carolina, Obama drew roars of approval Thursday when he mocked aspects of the presidential debate that had him on the defensive Wednesday night. He faced tough questions about his controversial pastor, his comments about bitter voters in small towns and his relationship with a 1960s radical.

Deadpanning, the Illinois senator said, "It does not get much more fun than these debates. They are inspiring events."

In criticism of his rival, he called the debate "the rollout of the Republican campaign against me in November" and said it represented textbook Washington politics that Clinton was very comfortable playing.

"They like stirring up controversy and they like playing gotcha games, getting us to attack each other," he said. "Senator Clinton looked in her element. She was taking every opportunity to get a dig in there. That's her right to kind of twist the knife a little bit ... that's the lesson she learned when Republicans did it to her in the 1990s."

The Obama campaign also sought to capitalize on the debate, sending out a fundraising appeal titled, "Gotcha," and soliciting $25 donations.

"Last night I think we set a new record because it took us 45 minutes before we even started talking about a single issue that matters to the American people," Obama told the North Carolina crowd. "Forty-five minutes before we heard about health care, 45 minutes before we heard about Iraq, 45 minutes before we heard about jobs, 45 minutes before we heard about gas prices."

ABC News' Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos pointedly questioned Obama, and Clinton politely challenged her rival.

"When you're running for the presidency, you've just got to kind of let it ..." Obama said, pretending to flick lint off his pants and jacket.

Another debate between the two candidates seems unlikely. Obama had agreed to a debate in North Carolina on Saturday, Clinton has agreed to a debate April 27 in Raleigh, sponsored and televised by CBS News. The two camps have not agreed on a date.

"I'll be honest with you. We've now had 21," Obama said of the debates. "It's not as if we don't know how to do these things. I could deliver Senator Clinton's lines. I'm sure she could deliver mine."

Later, taking a question from a fourth-grade boy who said he had been elected his class representative at school, Obama asked, "How many debates did you have to have?"

"None," the boy replied.

"None! That sounds good!" Obama said.

I think it's terrible the way Barack was treated. Given his lack of real campaign experience (his opponent for the U.S. Senate was an idiot named Keyes) we should be gentle with him, just as the Republicans will be in the Fall.

Yeah, given he's taking on a neo-con (Hillary) I'd say he's doing well.

I thought the debate was poorly executed in the aspect that the whole first hour, almost, was devoted to the crap we see on tv about who said what and how it can be interpreted and perceived, rather than to talk about issues that matter to us. I was glad to see that Hillary seemed much more proper and on the subject of beating the Republican machine and not just Obama. It's good to see that at least one of the candidates has the real goal in mind. Obama is more intent on his popularity and trying to prove that he is better than Clinton, rather than the more important overall goal of beating the Republican machine no matter who the candidate may be. Also, I thought it admirable that Hillary said that even if Obama got the nomination she would put all of resources and supporters behind him to win against the Republicans, which was a statement lacking Obama's mouth. I just get turned off when i think of him as president. I think if he gets the nomination, McCain will certainly victor over the democrats, which is a defeat that we cannot afford.

The biggest thing lost in the debate is that Hillary will continue the imperial presidency. Hillary has set out the vision of a Bush type doctrine when she extended our umbrella of protection over all our allies in the middle east not just Israel. Her actual words are listed below.

"I think that we should be looking to create an umbrella of deterrence that goes much further than just Israel. Of course I would make it clear to the Iranians that an attack on Israel would incur massive retaliation from the United States, but I would do the same with other countries in the region."

I guess she does not understand that the congress is the only entity that can declare or authorize war powers. That must by why Bush and Co. ran circles around her with regards to her Iraq vote to authorize the war. I guess she thought she had no choice.

What you just did in your comment above was a flawless example of Rovian tactics--taking a huge assumption based on NOTHING and putting words into your opponents mouth and using it against your opponent.

Of course she would get congressional approval--dugh.

I thought her umbrella solution was refreshing and an actual solution. We need a SOLUTION to that mess that doen't include pre-emptive strikes to allegedly protect us. I applaud her recommendation.

A solid majority of Democrats currently prefer Obama.

If CA were to run its primary tomorrow, Obama would crush Clinton.

It seems that winning or losing one of these so-called "debates" is more about the questions than the answers. There's no way for Obama to answer the question "Do you think Rev. Wright loves America?" that makes him look strong and honest. There's the weak answer or the dishonest answer, and Obama almost always goes with weak over dishonest.

There's also a fine line between calling attention to the banality of the questions and seeming dismissive or aloof. If Obama had begun his answer to the question about flag lapel pins like this: "George, I'm glad you asked about my energy policy. In my view,..." I would find that hilarious and endearing, but others might disagree. However, he might have been able to get away with "Where's your flag lapel pin, George?". It's tough to figure how it would play, so it might be best to let the audience judge the merit of the questions for themselves.

ABC has set a new low...FOX looks good in comparison. Gibson and little Stephanopoulis were so obviously tainted by Clintonitis...the debate cost Clinton dearly because of the unilateral prejudice that bordered on deep racism. SHAME ON ABC AND ANYONE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FIASCO.

Come on, clearly the results show they are in the tank for Obama. By cleverly asking questions on lapel pins, they made everyone feel sorry him. I mean he is kicking butt in most polls today. What can we say, who isn't a suckeer for a sad story.

Can Obama supporters not accept the fact he lost the debate? She didn't know the questions, she simply knew the answers.

12,000+ people responded to the question: Who won the debate last night? 78% Obama and 22% said Hillary. The commentators rarely acknowledged this but if you paid attention to the bottom of the screen you couldn't have missed it. There opinion matters more than Chuck, Joe, and all of the other androids on T.V.

I don't blame you I was undecided until after the Iowa primary then leaned toward Obama but would have been happy with Hillary. But she has shown she does not have the integrity and honesty to be president. She may have different policies that Bush but she is sure a Bush in the way that she looks at government and America.

I am a colorless female living in Ohio, formerly from Pennsylvania. I have been a regular contributor to Barack's campaign and will continue weekly. The tactics of Mrs. Clinton have been deplorable and she makes me embarrassed for her. She's a tactless liar who wants to win by any means. Obama started off grassroots and his grassroots supporters will continue to propel him to the White House. Hillary not only makes me sick, she is the antithesis of everything positive and good.

I find this very amusing; Barack in the hot seat and he whines. He says Hillary was in her element. Sounds like he's resorting to trash politics. The way he holds his head up and casts his awe inspiring gaze. People drool over the pied piper . Good salesman. Perhaps he has the Brooklyn Bridge for sale.
