Obama Denies Filling Out Questionnaire That Bears His Handwriting

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., maintained at Wednesday's ABC News debate in Philadelphia that his handwriting does not appear on a 1996 questionnaire stating support for a ban on the manufacture, sale, and possession of handguns. The Democratic presidential frontrunner made this claim even though a copy of the original document suggests otherwise.

"No, my writing wasn't on that particular questionnaire, Charlie. As I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns," said Obama.

Maybe he supported a ban on handguns in the past.

Maybe he supported a ban on handguns in the past and he's trying to scrub that by lying.

Maybe he supported a ban on handguns in the past and now he's changed his mind.

Maybe he let his staff establish his public position on banning handguns because he didn't care or didn't know.

This issue came up before and has been in th epress before and Obama was aware that the press knew about the document with his handwriting on it.

So, why the outright LIE last night? You all ask why Hillary would lie about Bosnia. Well, why would Obama LIE about somehting that was just reported two weeks ago? Who did he think he was going to fool?

When asked about his campaign's meeting with the Candian official, his first response was to deny there ever was a meeting. then the memo came out proving the meeting happened. You may say he just didn't know. So, why did he answer the question without checking first. Hillary would have be attacked, as she was for the Ohio helthcare story, for not checking first.

Now this issue. The first time it came up last year, his campaign denied he ever saw the questionaire. then they found the questinaire with his handwriting on it and also found out he actually had a meeting with the group he fille it out for and filed an ammended copy with them. So, it's obvious he did see it and reviewed it and discussed it with the group. But this time, he even repeated the lie in the debate AFTER the proof had already been reported two weeks ago.

With rev Wright, he's told so many versions of what he kjnew and when he knew it, you can't even keep it straight anymore. Last night he said the reason he disinvited Wright to his campaign launch is because of Wright's statements to Rolling Stone. He didn't say what those statement were. But, her acknowledged that he knew Wright's sermons could get a little rough. I looked up the original Rolling Stone article. Those statements were almost as bad as the vidoe snippets.

Disturbing pattern of a lack of honesty has emerged.

And then there was the debate where he said, "I only billed about five hours of work" to Tony Rezko. Meanwhile, the man helped him buy a house, helped bundle first $150K, then Obama later corrected that to $250K.

In addition, and I could give a crap about the issue, Obama said he never said anything about wearing a lapel flag pin. Not so, and his words are in this video reflecting the opposite.

Looked at it on ABC's website, very shady. His handwriting appears at the bottom of the first page and the question is on the last page. Oddly enough, the numbering and date for the questionnaire stops on the 4th page and the actual questionnaire doesn't start until the 5th page.

That is one weird document. So the only part he actually wrote on was a part that listed endorsements...but the rest of it appears to have been filled out electronically. There were other questions you'd think would have been written out by hand as well, but just that one question? And the handguns thing is at the very bottom of the questionnaire (unless there is more that wasn't scanned and put on the web). This thing was apparently floating around when he was running for office his first time (back in '96, so stick that in your cap all of you who say he has "no" experience), but it hasn't come out until now? If this thing doesn't make you think that Faux news had a hand in tacking on a few questions...

He is a lawyer who won't comment on the DC gun law becuase "I haven't read the briefs" but will scribble on something without reading it and letting it go out to the press. I saw the scribble they are talking about on page 4 or so...but that is the only place it appears. I am beginning to get annoyed with ABC. Is this what we have come to? Although you would think that his campaign manager (who filled out the survey) would at least know his positions. Then again Penn knew Clinton's position on CAFTA and he readily took money from the opposition on that issue. The fact that Obama believes that there is an individual right to bear arms, as pointed out in one of the rare instances of policy in that broadcast, leads me to believe he does not support an all out ban on hand guns. It would be unconstitutional, he is a constitutional scholar lest we forget.

The ABC piece was just damage control on their part as far as I'm concerned, but the piece did have a link to a Politico story that contains far more details. Unlike the ABC piece that claims Sen. Obama's statements that the handwriting on the questionaire is not his are 'unsubstantiated', the Politico piece goes into detail about how Sen. Obama's 1996 campaign submitted one questionaire, and then after an interview submitted another version that contained hand-written notes from Sen. Obama.

The Politico piece also contained a great quote from a member of the committee that sent out the hotly-contested questionaire - (paraphrasing) "I don't want anyone who's opinions on issues hasn't evolved over the last 11 years."

To your first question: Obama did not lie about it during the debate. Having handwritten notes on the second version of a questionaire, and no notes at all on the question of gun control, does not equate with Obama having filled the questionaire out in his own handwriting, as the 'moderators' were trying to insinuate.

To your second point: As I said previously, the quote came from a member of the committee that sent out this questionaire. I never said it came from Obama or any memeber of his campaign. And I never equated it with Obama, I just said that it was a great quote.

Of course, the next logical question would be, if you reviewed the document well enough to add commente to one question, why didn'y you review it well enough to correct anything else on it? The only handwriting on this document is on one of the faxed pages, the page regarding state gun control was not faxed and in fact the answer was typed in:
35. Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assaultw eaPons?Y es.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.
so someone needs to prove these two portions (faxed and unfaxed) are indeed the same document and that what handwriting there is is actually his. I thought in this country it was supposed to be innocent until proven guilty-guess not-
