Nash McCabe: Obama's Flag Pin Questioner

Nash McCabe is the voter from Wednesday night's presidential debate who noted that Barack Obama doesn't usually wear a flag pin and asked, "I want to know if you believe in the American flag."

ABC, which hosted the debate, had tracked her down after she was quoted in a New York Times story about white voters in small-town Latrobe, Pa., revealing her as 52, out of work and against Obama.

I don't think I've ever seen Hillary with a flag pin either....­somebody needs to tell this woman about that......­.... She has deeper issues than losing her job if she thinks Hillary has more in comon with her than Obama.

I have never said that I don't wear flag pins or refuse to wear flag pins.
Well, that was a lie.
Obama previously revealed that he stopped wearing an American flag lapel pin in the run-up to the Iraq war because he believed the pin had become a "substitute" for "true patriotism­."
"You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin,” Obama said. “Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest.”

He never said he refused to wear them. He said he refused to wear them as a way to visually demonstrate phony patriotism like Republicans do.

I'm glad he feels this way about the fake patriotism. I feel the same way. I didn't buy any flags, stickers, pins, hood ornaments, yellow ribbon magnets (originating from a stupid song about a criminal getting released from jail), or any of that crap, the vast majority of which was made in China anyway. I have watched that crap on cars fade and deteriorate over the years and I'm still waiting for those "patriots" to replace 'em, but they're too cheap.

Wearing or not wearing a flag pin is no big issue of principle, so why not do it? Why make an issue out of something that doesn't matter. Obama should wear the flag pin if it makes people happy and eliminates one thing people have to complain about. Besides, as President, your supposed to be the country's number 1 cheerleader. Just because you wear a flag pin doesn't turn you into George Bush or make you right wing nut case.
