With the Pennsylvania primary only days away, the New York Times delivers a look at the challenges the Clinton campaign faces with regards to maintaining support among past supporters and increasing its fund-raising capabilities.

Former Supporters:

After nearly two decades building relationships with a generation of Democrats, Mrs. Clinton has recently suffered a steady erosion of support for her presidential campaign from the party stalwarts that once formed the basis of her perceived juggernaut of "inevitability."

Some of it is just business, practical politicians putting aside ties to the Clintons to follow the will of the voters in their states or making a calculation about who seems best positioned to win.[...]

But there is something more wrenching at work as well, a reckoning of whether the Clintons, on balance, have been good or bad for the party. It has the feel of a very personal testing of loyalties to a former president who once always seemed to be adding to the "Friends of Bill" list, and to a sitting senator who, if not so driven as her husband to win over everyone, used her fame to help elect other Democrats.

Fund-raising:

Senator Barack Obama is swamping Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton with television advertising in their prolonged battle for the Democratic nomination, putting fresh pressure on Mrs. Clinton's fund-raising machine to find new sources of money to help her keep pace.

But her big-dollar fund-raising apparatus that was once the envy of the political world is encountering obstacles as many of those in its regular networks of donors have reached the maximum on their personal contributions or grown tired of the relentless press for donations.

The campaign is actively hunting for new wellsprings of cash, while tapped-out donors who want to give more are contemplating financing independent efforts on her behalf that are not bound by contribution limits. So far, however, the independent efforts have been halting at best.

If you go to the Talk Left, you can read Hillary supporters whining that Obama is trying to "buy" the election - his campaign is raising and spending money. No fair. Waaaah!

What's pathetic is Hillary blew a 20 point national lead to a deficit. Kinda like what Bush did to this economy.

When Obama outspends Clinton it is because he has outraised Clinton.

To me its really confusing to hear Hillary (and her supporters) constantly point to Obama's ability to raise money as if its a liability (for him). Its not. It is a mind boggling asset.

If I was in HRC's camp I'd stop complaining about how much money Obama has. It begs the obvious question, "where did he get it?" , to which there is an obvious answer, "from people who aren't giving it to the Clintons "

Obama can't buy the election. He doesn't have the clout the Clintons have. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't. Many people are shocked that Obama has resonated with so many. The GOP is really worried as well. I think after May 6th, we'll have a pretty good idea of where this is really headed.

Probably never be traced back to the perpetrator, and I doubt that the Clinton campaign had anything to do with it.

If Clinton's people were willing to mess with Obama in this fashion, they would have waited for late Monday night and really torn up the site.

Then again, they may just yet.

HuffPo must not have seen the latest poll that shows Hillary surpassing Obama since his disasterous performance in the last debate. she will probably beat Obama in Pennsylvania by 12 points and regain the momentum. It may be enough for the Dems to come to their senses and give the nomination to Hillary who has the best chance to beat McCain in November.

that is so funny - she will never beat McCain - she is hated by the Repubs and they are salivating for the chance to be in a match up against her because they have tapes out already - my kids forwarded the internet address of two really nasty documentaries on them - not very flattering - I would like to know what the Democrats plan to do about those two videos if the do get the nomination. It will be curtain call for Clinton without much of a battle. All Obama's work to get Obamacans and Indies will be in vain, cause they will all revert back to JMcsame, and that won't be good for us.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:35 AM on 04/20/2008

Au contraire, she was up six points. Since she has been polling three points lower that her actual and Obama is polling 3 points higher than his actual, twelve points is very attainable. For the other reponders, I find it interesting that it never seems to occur to Obamaniacs that their denigrating of Hillary will be taken as insults to Hillary's supporters. This only drives Dems and Indies into McCain's camp. As he is already equal to them in the polls, any crossover will give McCain the election.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:58 AM on 04/20/2008

And that "momentum" will crash upon NC and IN and won't do well in MT, SD or OR and maybe do okay in KY, PR and Guam and in the end none of all of this will matter. Because he will come out with less negatives, more popular vote, more delates, more primaries and states won.

And btw? I don't think Hillary is going to win PA by 12, I predict she's going to win by 15. And ya know what? It still won't matter.

Good times. Good times.

Cheers!

All of Hillary's negatives are already out in the open. There are plenty more to mined in Obama's closet. Regardless of how the MSM tries to ignore them they will bubble to the surface in the minds of the super delegates.

"give"? give the nomination to Hilary? shouldn't she win it instead?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:19 AM on 04/20/2008

The Democrat Party isn't very Democratic. The super Delegates will give the nomination to someone as neither candidate can garner the requisite number of delegates to win the nomination outright. A good sign that it is going Hillary's way is if they seat Florida and Michigan. That would give Hillary the edge in the popular vote.

On the ten or eleven days of this campaign that have featured primaries and caucuses, Hillary has gained more delegates than Obama on exactly one of those days.

Texas Tuesday. 350 delegates in contest, she has a margin of 7 delegates.

That is 2% kids. One day in this whole contest thus far has been a net gain for Hillary, and she spanked Obama to the tune of 2%.

Not quite the same as Potomac Tuesday, where Obama took Clinton to the cleaners. It was 64 to 36, a margin of victory of 28%.

With 168 delegates at stake.

That, my lads, is a butt kicking.

Hillary. Ready on day one. But not ready if her plan of cinching it on Super Duper Tuesday falls to ashes.

Indeed she did. The total number of Delegates in the four states was 350.

She got seven more than he did. A margin of victory of all of 2%.

Big. Well, no, it's not.

How on earth can the SUPERDELEGATES ignore the will of the people of CALIFORNIA, NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY, FLORDIA, TEXAS, PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO, MASS?????
OBAMA is now below 50 percent in the national polls and surely on the decline due to his shoddy performance at the great debate this last week where he failed to address the fact that he won't be aboe to invite his personal pastor to his inaugration, and thinks religion is just an aphrodisiac for the downtrodden. His upcoming crash in Penn by perhaps 20 percent will
make it clear to the SUPERDELEGATES he is best as a VP which will unify the party and
be sure his voice his heard in the halls of power..

THERE IS NO ANSWER becasue the plain truth is that his judgment FAILED and failed in a way suggesting he may not be the WISE DEEP HOPE THAT HAS SUBSTANCE which the country wants and sees so vividly in HILLARY WHO championed the health care issue for the uninsured and unprotected while Barack was going to elite schools with health care.

How can they ignore the will of the people in the 30 states Obama won????

He is below 50% in national polls and yet he's ahead of Hillary, what does that say about her. Over 50% of the people in her own party don't trust her, what does that say about her?..

She can never win by 20%... She's lucky if she wins by 10% in PA

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:19 AM on 04/20/2008

OF COURSE IT WILL 20 PERCENT. Barack failed the debate and HILLARY WILL win back the people who have wised up about the clear fact that OBAMA PRORAGANDA AND OBAMA MONEY is tryiing to buy the election which should not be based on
dollars but on common sense about who is the better candidate for the November election. When this happens the tidal wave in support of HILL will be dramatic....perhaps even as high as 22 to 23 percent. VOTING FOR OBAMA is
a vote for the loser of the debate, a vote throw away to a campaign that thinks
dollars can replace wisdom......

The SUPERDELEGATES ARE ALL AMBITIOUS PEOPLE IN SOME WAY OR ELSE THEY WOULD NOT BE SUPER. Many of them are finished with personal ambition and not seeking positions in the next administration, and of many of them have only one thing to consider which is namely precisely this. The first group is very large and surely must grasp that a McCain victory would be a disaster of the first magnitude and that Obama can't conceivably hold his own or defeat JMc in a debate because he is just plain and simple not as knowledgeable. The first group is key. Everything depends upon their recognition that OBAMA as orator can't hide the fact that he
is plain and simple Republican cannon fodder where in the big states many who supported HILL will prefer the candidate who knows the issues better....

all states are only equal in the united states senate as this was the bait the founders used to lure the little guys into the swamp with the big guys. take a introductory course or do a little studying of the issue on he web.. once you have wised up to the reality you need to accept the fact that otherwise not all states are equal. put simply CALIFORNIA is more important than say IOWA or NH. Put bluntly the later could fall off the map and hardly anyone would even notice. THE PEOPLE of the major states want HILLARY over OBAMA, and their opinion is the opinion of people who want a victory in NOVEMBER, not a loss as OBAMA would bring.....

HILLARY IS IN BED (FIGURATIVELY) WITH RICHARD MELLON SCAIFE AND KARL ROVE. WHY DO YOU THINK HE GAVE HER THE GLOWING ENDORSEMENT.

SCAIFE IS FEEDING THE CLINTONS OUTRAGEOUS STUFF TO (TRY) TO STEAL THE ELECTION FROM OBAMA. DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT HILLARY IS THAT BRILLIANT? AFTER HILLARY MET WITH SCAIFE THE WRIGHT CONTROVERSY WENT INTO OVERDRIVE.

SCAIFE IS MANIPULATING THE MSM. AT TUESDAY'S DEBATE, THEY TRIED TO TRAP OBAMA. IT DIDN'T WORK, BECAUSE HE IS AN HONEST MAN.

WHY WOULD HILLARY JOIN FORCES WITH THE RADICAL RIGHT, YOU MAY ASK?
THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE EXPLANATION? THEY HAVE SOMETHING THEY'RE HOLDING OVER THE CLINTONS HEADS. I'M NOT SURE IF IT HAS TO DO WITH THE UPCOMING TRIAL OR SOMETHING THEY DISCOVERED ABOUT WHITEWATER OR TRAVELGATE OR THEIR OTHER LEGAL EMBROGLIOS.

THERE ARE CERTAIN ARTICLES ON THE HUFFINGTON SITE THAT ARE BEING PLANTED AS PART OF ANOTHER TRAP THAT THEY'RE SETTING UP AGAINST OBAMA AND POSSIBLY TO STEAL THE ELECTION IF IT SUCCEEDS! OR IF THEY DARE.

OBAMA'S CLEAN.

HILLARY IS THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE FOR THE RADICAL RIGHT WING. WORRY ABOUT THAT!

Like many Hillary Clinton supporters, I am waiting to see if the "undecided" in the polls in Pennsylvania are just afraid to commit to Clinton because they don't want to be subjected to the rabid responses and harassment from the Obama supporters.
I have already donated $1000.00 to her campaign and still have $1300.00 more in reserve. When she demonstrates that she can survive the onslaughts of both the Republicans and Liberal Left Wing radicals by proving her strength in this nomination, I will show my support for her.

To the Billary supporters- I can take anything you have got. You want to debate? Let's do it.

Let's start with economics. What happened to the 200,000 new jobs that Hillary promised upstate New York in her Senate campaign? OK, OK, somehow you and Billary will say it's the Republican's fault that she can't deliver on that one. But one thing is bugging me...
I don't see any jobs legislation that she submitted during her tenure as Senator to date.

Let's start instead with the Iraq War. What happened to the "diplomacy" that she thought she was voting for? I mean, she didn't even take the time to read the legislation. She must have been confused with the Levin amendment- which would have required more diplomacy and a seperate vote to go to war. Wait, that won't work either. She voted AGAINST the Levin amendment...

OK, OK, tough crowd, I know. Let's talk about character. This is certainly one of her best points, right? Why would she tell white southerners to "screw it"? Sounds a little vindictive to me. Also, why would she repeat a story about ducking sniper fire in Bosnia on 3 different occasions? Wow, gotta ding her on the honesty thing too.

Don't get discouraged. We'll find something you can debate....eventually.

GOD BLESS YOU!

I too have committed a large amount of capital and will commit more if things go Hillary's way in Pennsylvania. I look forward to seeing how all the back & forth and the speculation of the last five weeks plays out when people hit the booths.

FROM HURTING AMERICANS to help KENYA and AFRICA.

We are weakening as a country, our standard of living is falling. You can't help others if your foundation is not strong and our foundation is not strong.. WITH OBAMA's Hidden Agenda.. the GLOBAL POVERTY ACT OF 2007

Actually i believe the uncommitted super delegates are for Obama but since they have ties to the Clintons they choose to stay on the fence. Well atleast thats what the last super delegate who supported Obama said. He was also friends with the Clintons.

Query . . . how many newly registered dems or 1st time voters are voting Obama? Has anyone been tracking or seen those polling numbers? And, if so, to what extent do those numbers break in Obama's favor? I ask because it seems to me that, if you're a "first time voter" supporting Obama, you have done so precisely because of his message of Hope and Change. I mean, you're first-time vote for him must represents more of a direct rejection of Hillary' "politics as usual", rather than a rejection of her professed policy positions (say that 3x fast :)- ).

Assuming that's the case (and I do believe that is a fair assumption) the likelihood that you would vote for Hillary in the general election, given the negative tone of her campaign (forgetting, for a moment, her other detractors), would be pretty slim - I imagine - regardless of her position on issues. And you certainly wont vote for McCain. Your preference, I would guess, would be to abstain from voting, entirely, in November. If this is true, then she must realize that she is doing more to insure her own un-electability, rather than his.

I don't know who you are "for" or if you want to try to use this idea to bash Obama as others do but I am willing to give this a shot.

I would say that if clinton steals the nom, the new people may sit out - but not because they will only vote for Obama (as clinton supporters would toss a temper tantrum w/ their votes), but rather, because for her to GET the nomination requires overturning the vote.

They are excited precisely because they feel they have a voice at last. To have that voice - which has already chosen Obama - overturned, will disillusion them so much that I can't see them mustering up the enthusiasm to vote for her.

To have her steal the nomination with her current tactics - she Is a repub anyway, you know?

Even if Hillary wins by a hair, she will spin it that it is a big win for her, because she was outspent by Obama on ads.

She (or Bill) will say that Obama has been a worthy rival, who followed in the footsteps of Jesse Jackson.

Why will I shed no tears at all when Hillary finally has to realize she has lost?

Why do I have not the least pity for her?

Because she and her hubby tried to suggest that McCain was a more worthy presidential candidate than Obama.

They lost the last of my respect at that point. There are two sides in politics: the pitiless and the dead.

Good, about Hillary's money drying up. I hope this means folks are FINally realizing what destructive disgrace her campaign has been to our party, our nation. How many more baldfaced lies must we endure from her? How much more slime? I pray Barack wins Pennsylvania.

I totally agree with you a 100% when Hillary join the campaign she under estimated Sen. Obama who had millions of people who are still supporting. They believe in him and trust him after seeing what had to offer the Aemerican people who lost jobs, houses etc. Hillary's campaign was lost a long time ago. Wake up people and smell the coffee. We are behind Obama we will continue to donate money so as to fight Clinton. I also pray to Almight God to help Obama win in PA so that Hillary can go away. I am sick and tied of seeing her talking lies after lies like a toddler. You can see that she still plays the OLD FASHIONED POLITICS. This is 21st century people are willing to have Obama who will being new ideas to the country and the rest of the world. We have so many enemies around the globe. We are tired of re-runs in white house.
Please Hillary go home while you still have some energy walk home.
