I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Debate

The furor over ABC's Democratic debate last week was not universally shared.

While Obama supporters (and many media critics) decried what they saw as biased, gotcha-style questioning, a vocal minority (mostly Clinton supporters) was unmoved. Where was the media outrage when Hillary was being grilled in past debates? She got it "much much tougher" than Obama did from ABC, Clinton spokesman Jay Carson charged.

This debate over debates had me curious. Was ABC's debate really in a lowly class of its own? Or were Obama backers (inside the press and out) just being overly-sensitive? So I went through each of the four one-on-one contests between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, starting with CNN's debate way back on January 31, and cataloged every question, classifying them as follows:

  • Policy and expertise: In this category, I put any questions about a candidate's policy preferences or legislative record, as well as questions about a candidate's experience ("Neither one of you have ever run a business, so why should either of you be elected to be CEO of the country?").
  • Non-policy questions: Questions focused on politics, including electability and the role of superdelegates, as well as those about campaign management, such as releasing tax records or accepting public financing.
  • Scandal questions: Questions about hot-button, non-policy issues like Jeremiah Wright or Clinton's Bosnia trip. (Note: this category does not include follow-up questions on these issues given to the opposing candidate; ie. Clinton being asked about Wright, or Obama being asked about Bosnia.)
  • This is obviously not a scientific process. I did not factor in the tone of the policy questions, which were often framed as critiques of the candidates and their views (although I found relative parity between Clinton and Obama in this respect). Moreover, for the purposes of this analysis, I'm not taking a position on whether any of the scandal questions were fair or legitimate lines of inquiry.

That said, I found the results of applying this method surprising. Here are the notable takeaways:

    Story continues below

    1) ABC's debate was in a class of its own, with more scandal and non-policy questions than any other. ABC asked the most scandal questions, and both ABC and NBC devoted only half of their questions to policy issues. The CNN debates were dramatically more policy-focused. Here's a breakdown:

    Policy   Non-Policy   Scandal
    CNN (1/31)    31 3 1
    CNN (2/21)    23 5 2
    NBC 24 17 5
    ABC 32 14 13

    2) Barack Obama has received the overwhelming majority of scandal questions over the course of the four debates, by a margin of 17 to 4. Obama has fielded questions about his "bitter" remarks, his connections to 60s-era radical William Ayers, two questions about flag lapels, two questions about his alleged plagiarism of speeches, three questions on Louis Farrakhan, and eight about Jeremiah Wright.

Clinton has received only four such questions -- two about her Bosnia trip, one about a photo of Obama in African garb that was linked to her campaign without evidence by the Drudge Report, and one over-the-top inquiry about Bill Clinton ("If your campaign can't control the former president now, what will it be like when you're in the White House?").

    3) Networks 'balanced' scandal questions to Obama by repeatedly asking Clinton about Obama's electability/readiness. In three of the four debates, moderators followed scandal questions to Obama by asking Clinton whether she doubts Obama's electability or experience.

CNN (2/21): "Are you saying that your opponent is all hat and no cattle? ... Are you saying that Senator Obama is not ready and not qualified to be commander in chief?"

NBC: "Is your contention in this latest speech that America would somehow be taking a chance on Senator Obama as commander-in-chief?"

ABC: "[A] simple yes-or-no question: Do you think Senator Obama can beat John McCain or not?"

Of course, such questions are politically sensitive for Clinton; however they are hardly comparable in degree to scandal questions Obama received. In each case, they essentially provided Clinton an opportunity to expound on why she believes she is better suited to be the Democratic nominee.

    4) The debate famously mocked by Saturday Night Live was actually very favorable to Clinton. In the SNL rendition, CNN's February debate was a mix of aggressive, biting questions to Hillary Clinton and softballs to Barack Obama. In fact, the candidates received identical or virtually identical questions about Cuba policy, immigration, bilingualism, the economy, Iraq, and earmarks. On the other hand, Obama was called out on an apparent shift over Cuba ("[T]hat's different from your position back in 2003. You called U.S. policy toward Cuba a miserable failure, and you supported normalizing relations. So you've backtracked now..."), Clinton was offered multiple questions on Obama's readiness to be commander-in-chief, and Obama was pressed to explain the plagiarism allegations.

Clinton actually had it much rougher at CNN's earlier one-on-one debate in Hollywood. That was the only debate of the four where Clinton was asked a scandal question while Obama was not. Moreover, Clinton faced three questions on her initial support for the Iraq war ("Why can't you just say right now that that vote was a mistake?"), one question about Sen. Ted Kennedy's endorsement of Obama, and another on the perception of a Bush-Clinton dynasty ("How can you be an agent of change when we have had the same two families in the White House for the last 30 years?").

I don't see what the big deal is that Obama was gettin beatin up on; the previous debates Hillary was getting the "tough" question but no one complained. The only reason its a big deal is becuase Obama whinned about every tough question he was asked. At least Hillary sucked it up and gave answers.

During the 2nd debate Clinton whinned. She actually asked why she gets asked questions first all the time. After the debates she whinned about how everything was so bias.

Clinton has been whinning about the press since this whole thing started. This article shows ABC was bias and the others weren't. And Obama brushed this one off. It's the PRESS that say this was a bias debate.

Where do you get off calling Obama a whinner. He did no such thing.

I completely agree. HRC is a dirty fighter and the MSM is only interested in generating higher ratings. On a side note about HRC being a fighter- it strikes me as a legitimate question to ask her: if you are such a fighter, why didn't you fight against the war when it was proposed? Other Senators did- HRC didn't- maybe b/c she never even read the Intelligence estimate. So much for experience.

The blatant one sided tenor of the 'debate ' could best be summed up this way Sen Obama was smeared by his association with Rev. Wright and thur the inclusion of Louis Farrakhan even though Sen. Obama has renouced Farrakhans support. How many Questions did you see regarding Governor Rendells comments about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXum_-8I1TAv=DXum_-8I1TA ask ABC, CNN, MSNBC why?

What I want to know is: was McBush wearing his "flag pin" when he appeared on George Stephanopoulos' show on Sunday? And if not, did Georgie ask McBush why he wasn't wearing one??? Inquiring minds want to know.

We don't need another president with a tin ear, one who just doesn't get what the public's thinking.

And Hillary Clinton's "can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen" line is all tin ear and tone deaf. Because the critics, the voters-- even many of her supporters-- agree: that ABC debate was *bad*. So she's defending George and Charlie? She *liked* the irrelevant, slimy questions?

Of couse this is all coming from the candidate who once complained about being asked too many questions first and relied on Saturday Night Live skits to illustrate how she was being unfairly treated:

We also don't need another president whose weird logic makes you feeling like you're going crazy.

So what is all this "whinning" about the media from Obama supporters? Read your own articles and 90% of what is posted here at HuffPost and tell me the media has been unfair to Obama. What a hypocritical bunch.

Again and again the debate goes on whether there was bias during the ABC debate in Penn. There is not one rational comment made in these blogs. People simply express their own very biased position over and over again. It can make a sane person sick. Liberal jerks and conservative jerks still are basically jerks. When will someone even try to be objective? I guess never is the answer.

This is what gets me about the media.... get it right for God's sake. My anger was not because Obama had a rough time by the commentators what really upsets me is, what gives the likes of George and Charlie the right to think that their 6+ figure salary, would ever make them be able to relate to the average American's life. How could they ever speak on behalf of a single parent with 2 kids and no health insurance. How could they ever know what struggles I face every day?

For them to sit there and act like they are speaking on behalf of the American people is outrageous and we the people know that they are pushing their own agendas ... ratings. That's what upsets a lot of us.

"Barack Obama has received the overwhelming majority of scandal questions over the course of the four debates, by a margin of 17 to 4."

That's an appropriate ratio, about four questions to each of these two unpresidential candidates for everything that can legitimately called a scandal. Clinton's wife lies, evincing the most essential attribute of politicians; Obama associates with scumbags and defends his wife's lack of respect for the country.

Clinton still has time to catch up in the scandal department, but that's one arena where Obama is the odds-on favorite.

Rendell, HRC supporter praised Farrakhan, why was HRC not scrutinized further and denounce and reject? Bill Clinton, her spouse, Columbian trade deals? What's up? Mark Penn is still in HRC's campaign, he did not disappear. Now she is spreading hatred, again, if you have listened to her stump speech today.

The Clinton campaign has divided the democractic party. I find it amazing how the media constantly focuses on Hillary Clinton and what she neds to do to win. However, she is losing. I goto CNN, MSNBC, even here and I see picture of her everyday. the same issue is bought up, 'what she needs to win, what states she needs to win and at what percentage'. PA has been deemed a state that she 'must win' . However polls, conclude that she can win and still lose the nominee. The ole 'Must win' states may not be as conclusive as they were before. The shape of the Democratic Race has been changed for ever by a poor bi-racial (black) candidate with a questionable name: Barack Obama.

The internet and the youth and people who want change has spoken and still speak and is causing a uproaor in this country. Barack is a awesome campaign strategist . He has caused a girl name Hillary Rodham Clinton to shake her head and dodge sniper fire. The media is not hard enough on HRC.

Perhaps it's because for the first time ever in American History, a Black man is a possible nominee and has more votes, and It's not about Race or Sex,it's about the 'Best Man' for the Job. . Barack is Our Man.

What she needs to do to win is to get more people to like her. Not likely.

ABC News' idea of a fair debate is to have only 1/2 of the moderators be former Clinton administration players like George Stephanopoulos.
Can you imagine if ABC had tried to put 2 former Clinton administration insiders as the debates moderators?

That would have been too unfair so they just kept it to 50% of the moderators that were CLEARLY pro-Clinton!

If you want to paraphrase the debate it is simply this Obama is such a light weight loser. Take await his scripted comments and he folds like a cheap suit. He has nothing-zero-nada. This clown is so far over his head its laughable.
They were certainly fair questions. The voters need to know about a candidates associations, especially on a 3rd rate platform of "I alone have judgment and the rest of the country is stupid" Hey Obama, who is stupid now tough guy? And he got beat up by a girl. I can't wait until he meets some real tough guys in the world community. They will be telling him to bark, roll over, play dead and this weakling will. If it weren't so serious he would be worth the comedic value alone

You will get beat up by a girl if you are a man who doesn hit girls.

This is ridiculious and the name calling does not help. If you are a Hillary supporter and she wins how do you win the general election if you insult the people who you need to vote for her?

THE TWO BIGGEST ISSUES FACING THE AMERICAN VOTER"
    #1 The Economy
    #2 The Iraq Oil War
    First question about either?
63 minutes into the debate...63 minutes!
I heard more substantitive question from Paula Abdul on American Idol.
Gibson and Snuffeluffegus are now indistinguishable from Hannity, O'Reilly and Limbaugh in my book.
And why, oh why would they tap Snuffy, a former Clinton consigliere, to be a moderator anyway?
    Nope, nothing fishy there.
At the first Obama/McNasty debate I hear their trying to get Cindy 'STEPFORD WIFE' McCain to moderate.

I want to challenge Mr G Steff to go back to his friend Hannity and ask him about this version of the Rev. Wright sermon and why nobody in the mainstream media told us that Rev. Wright was quoting something that a former US Ambassador said (by the way he was white) and not himself.

Subject:* Fox caught red handed. Made false video and lied about Obama's
    pastor.
    *
Fox news doctored and falsified the video of Obama's pastor Wright. Wright
did not preach those words himself. He was quoting a White Man.; Ambassador
Edward Peck. And he is a retired, white, career U.S. diplomat who served
32-years in the U.S. Foreign Service and was chief of the U.S. mission to
Iraq under Jimmy Carter. The complete video below will show that Pastor
Wright is telling his audience that "I will tell you what a white man named
Ambassador Peck said". And then he will quote Mr. Peck. And he ends by
reminding his congregation "A white man said this, I didn't say it". Fox
didn't show that because they wanted people to think it came from Pastor
    Wright.*

Fox news is the bottom of the barrel; Full of hate and thoroughly racist.

    Here's the evidence.

Predicting the Penna. result is easy. Just count the nember of Fox viewers and you will have the vote count for Clinton. Fox is not the mystery but the other "majors" are. They seem to be universally supporting Clinton just as that Mellon Scaiffe man in Penna. is. The answer to Scaiffe and Fox is clear as they want the "easier" opponent. The " majors " are more under the radar and I suspect the corporate ownership consolidation makes their strategy equally in line with the easier candidate to beat thesis. We have big problems with the" major " media's bias. They are in a position to run this country.
