I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Debate

The furor over ABC's Democratic debate last week was not universally shared.

While Obama supporters (and many media critics) decried what they saw as biased, gotcha-style questioning, a vocal minority (mostly Clinton supporters) was unmoved. Where was the media outrage when Hillary was being grilled in past debates? She got it "much much tougher" than Obama did from ABC, Clinton spokesman Jay Carson charged.

This debate over debates had me curious. Was ABC's debate really in a lowly class of its own? Or were Obama backers (inside the press and out) just being overly-sensitive? So I went through each of the four one-on-one contests between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, starting with CNN's debate way back on January 31, and cataloged every question, classifying them as follows:

  • Policy and expertise: In this category, I put any questions about a candidate's policy preferences or legislative record, as well as questions about a candidate's experience ("Neither one of you have ever run a business, so why should either of you be elected to be CEO of the country?").
  • Non-policy questions: Questions focused on politics, including electability and the role of superdelegates, as well as those about campaign management, such as releasing tax records or accepting public financing.
  • Scandal questions: Questions about hot-button, non-policy issues like Jeremiah Wright or Clinton's Bosnia trip. (Note: this category does not include follow-up questions on these issues given to the opposing candidate; ie. Clinton being asked about Wright, or Obama being asked about Bosnia.)
  • This is obviously not a scientific process. I did not factor in the tone of the policy questions, which were often framed as critiques of the candidates and their views (although I found relative parity between Clinton and Obama in this respect). Moreover, for the purposes of this analysis, I'm not taking a position on whether any of the scandal questions were fair or legitimate lines of inquiry.

That said, I found the results of applying this method surprising. Here are the notable takeaways:

    Story continues below
    advertisement

    1) ABC's debate was in a class of its own, with more scandal and non-policy questions than any other. ABC asked the most scandal questions, and both ABC and NBC devoted only half of their questions to policy issues. The CNN debates were dramatically more policy-focused. Here's a breakdown:

    Policy   Non-Policy   Scandal
    CNN (1/31)    31 3 1
    CNN (2/21)    23 5 2
    NBC 24 17 5
    ABC 32 14 13

    2) Barack Obama has received the overwhelming majority of scandal questions over the course of the four debates, by a margin of 17 to 4. Obama has fielded questions about his "bitter" remarks, his connections to 60s-era radical William Ayers, two questions about flag lapels, two questions about his alleged plagiarism of speeches, three questions on Louis Farrakhan, and eight about Jeremiah Wright.

Clinton has received only four such questions -- two about her Bosnia trip, one about a photo of Obama in African garb that was linked to her campaign without evidence by the Drudge Report, and one over-the-top inquiry about Bill Clinton ("If your campaign can't control the former president now, what will it be like when you're in the White House?").

    3) Networks 'balanced' scandal questions to Obama by repeatedly asking Clinton about Obama's electability/readiness. In three of the four debates, moderators followed scandal questions to Obama by asking Clinton whether she doubts Obama's electability or experience.

CNN (2/21): "Are you saying that your opponent is all hat and no cattle? ... Are you saying that Senator Obama is not ready and not qualified to be commander in chief?"

NBC: "Is your contention in this latest speech that America would somehow be taking a chance on Senator Obama as commander-in-chief?"

ABC: "[A] simple yes-or-no question: Do you think Senator Obama can beat John McCain or not?"

Of course, such questions are politically sensitive for Clinton; however they are hardly comparable in degree to scandal questions Obama received. In each case, they essentially provided Clinton an opportunity to expound on why she believes she is better suited to be the Democratic nominee.

    4) The debate famously mocked by Saturday Night Live was actually very favorable to Clinton. In the SNL rendition, CNN's February debate was a mix of aggressive, biting questions to Hillary Clinton and softballs to Barack Obama. In fact, the candidates received identical or virtually identical questions about Cuba policy, immigration, bilingualism, the economy, Iraq, and earmarks. On the other hand, Obama was called out on an apparent shift over Cuba ("[T]hat's different from your position back in 2003. You called U.S. policy toward Cuba a miserable failure, and you supported normalizing relations. So you've backtracked now..."), Clinton was offered multiple questions on Obama's readiness to be commander-in-chief, and Obama was pressed to explain the plagiarism allegations.

Clinton actually had it much rougher at CNN's earlier one-on-one debate in Hollywood. That was the only debate of the four where Clinton was asked a scandal question while Obama was not. Moreover, Clinton faced three questions on her initial support for the Iraq war ("Why can't you just say right now that that vote was a mistake?"), one question about Sen. Ted Kennedy's endorsement of Obama, and another on the perception of a Bush-Clinton dynasty ("How can you be an agent of change when we have had the same two families in the White House for the last 30 years?").

Interesting that this week on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" when they discussed this, their panel consisted of Cookie Roberts, Sam Donaldson and George Will - all ABC News insiders and 2 ex-hosts of the show. And they did the expected: tried to deflect the justified criticism of the deplorable debate moderators, Stephanopoulos and Gibbons. No accident that no one like Katrina Van Heuvel was on the panel this week, just loyal lap dogs. What happened to Sam Donaldson? He used to be a journalist.

Sam Donaldson IS a journalist, and in most cases, seems to be the only panelist who leans to the left of his other colleagues.

Just because he's NOT on the Obama bandwagon, doesn't make him a non-journalist.

Katrina van den Heuval, is NOT what I would call an unbiased journalist, she is an Obama supporter, and would clearly show her stripes there.

Of all those mentioned above, I think that in regard to independent thinking and unbiased commentary, Sam Donaldson is the closest shot.

Barely 1 year as US Senator, Obama's record is barely there. McCain has 25 years, Clinton just as much as a US Senator and First Lady. Both records can be widely examined and criticized.

For that reason, it is fair to examine Obama's past life and in context his social, political views, his past writings, and yes personal life. The public has the right to know who he is - from his Muslim upbringing, which in my view should not be considered a smear. The good Muslim community are unfairly put in the middle. But because of the tragic 9-11 and the Senator's associations with radical elements, William Ayers, Reverend Wright, Farrakhan, voters are asking questions. To quote Rep King of Iowa: "I will tell you, if he is elected president then the radical Islamists, the al-Qaida and the radical Islamists and their supporters, will be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on Sept. 11th." . FAIR IS FAIR - we are in the midst of war on terror.

Considering the COMBINED 60 YEARS public records of both McCain and Clinton, and Obama's 1 year, how then can Obama's record ?

F Obama's "bitter remarks, connections to 60s-era radical William Ayers, questions about flag lapels, ohis alleged plagiarism of speeches, on Louis Farrakhan, Jeremiah Wright are not only fair but necessary. What about the Sinclair affair that is all over the internet ?

For Obama to be our President, these cannot be buried.

    1) Obama has been a US Senator for 3 years. He joined the US Senate in January 2005.

    2) Obama was an Illinois State Senator for 8 years before that.

He's got a longer legislative record than Hillary Clinton does even if you take out his time in the State Senate. Yes, he's authored, sponsored, or otherwise had his name on more legislation than Hillary Clinton. Search both of their records on thomas.loc.gov and see for yourself.

Just those facts popping up again.

NATIONAL RECORD. He was barely a yearling at the US Senate when he decided to run for the Presidency. His voting record in the Illionois State Senate are missing and in my view very questionable. As to his Senate voting record - it's a sham . He voted for the oil company bill advoted by the Bush administration. And, he is hardly in the senate this days ? Very poor Senate attendance.

    Is that it ?

I noticed you happen to shut out those other issues, and what about the Sinclair scandal that is all over the internet. THAT SILENCE WILL KILL HIS NOMINATION.

YOU CAN NOT BURY THE TRUTH. WE, THE PEOPLE HAS THE RIGHT TO KNOW.

Finally some criticism of the holy obama... when Clinton speaks the vultures pounce. Barack has not been called to task on ANY issues in his life. Clinton's 'lies' ??.. see the link above where Obama lied about this association with the Kennedys... why wasn't this news? He wasn't in church whenever Rev Wright spewed hate speech, oh, right, yes he was.... His Black Power past is the big secret that the campaign hides - but McCain will ride into the White House on BO's lies.
What has been wrong with the media? from the networks, to Olbermann to slime bags like Randi Rhodes and Ed Schultz (who called Clinton supporters 'Clintonistas') ... from day one - (or from the first dollar of Oprah's money) they drooled over the guy and any criticism was met with insane name-calling and spitting rage (from Democrats). But no cost - Randi is back and vile as ever on AirAmerica.
Obama may well get the nomination - but McCain will win - if poor baby Barack is whining now .. WAIT for the folks who brought us the racist ad that defeated Harold Ford... this will seem like a walk in the park - And he, and his minnions will have gotten just what they deserve.

Finally, he's been put on the spot, and did not score very well as a result.

Now that the shoe is FINALLY on the other foot, the Obamanics are reeling in overdrive.

All I can say is that you don't have very much confidence in your Messiah to stand up for himself or you all wouldn't be Blatantly overreacting to this long awaited balance of attack by the Media.

If he was treated in the same negative and disrespectful fashion as Senator Clinton in the last 15 months, the guy wouldn't EVEN be AROUND now.

Funny I don't recall Sen. Clinton being asked about Peter Paul yet. Or about her husband and Penn's Columbia trade connections and the conflict of interest it presents, or the pardon scandals. Why she and her husband were photographed with Rezko and why Wright was invited to the White House, even though she criticizes Obama for associating with both. I could go on, but if you think Hill has been "fully vetted" well you're sadly mistaken. When it comes to the Clinton's there always seems to be another skeleton in the closet that got missed (or added).

You're changing the context of the article, which wasn't written by Obama. The article is a comment on the presumably (I know. I don't want to go there this morning.) objective and impartial media. You understand, people still go to school to learn how to be professional journalists in the electronic media.

I don't want the media playing gossip monger, psychotherapist, or shock jock. As ABC proved last week, they aren't good at any of these roles. Instead, the network showed disrespect for both candidates, and Obama got the bulk of the time-wasting disrespect. After elementary school, we usually get disgusted when schoolyard bullies continue to pick on scapegoats, not only because we don't want to see others suffer, but because we simply lose interest in that predictable kind of drama.

Clinton, ever the scorched earth opportunist, clearly favored the moderators' approach, as if she were in cahoots with them all along. AND she deludes herself into thinking that, once she sides with them, she can just as easily separate herself from them, at least in the viewers' eyes, if not in the eyes of the media. She DOES make the Faustian bargain. She deludes herself into thinking that she's not being used by the media as much as she thinks that she's using the media. Once she indulges herself in the coalition, she sells her soul. And that's what we see in HRC (and the media), time and again.

you can't become a target if you don't lend yourself by your life style to be a target. In other words
we all are just supposed to ignore this guys life style. His associations with crimianals and radicals.
We love to ignore it. He can do what he wants and associate with who he wants as a privat citizen.
But if he wants to become president of all the people, some of the public would like to know the character of this guy. And what he shows is not presidential marterial. But the leftists are willing
to overlook anything , amd call all questioning of his character an attack. He has so much financial
power backing him up, that he can buy the presidency. We saw that before in history. Nothing new.
The funny thing is , that the masses who don't have a pot to tinkle in, adore this bufoon, who is
misleading them in every step to the White House. Does anyone really know what he stand for on
immigration? He made speeches against the war, but supported the war by passing a Billion dollar budget for the war. He promises the masses welfare in every aspect but has not once said where the money will come from to finance it. He promises troop withdraw, but says at the same time, he reserves the right to change his mind. He states he will solve problems as he goes along and as they arise without a long term goal.

jeeze dora. nuance is not your forte, is it? for your information:

-those of us who support obama have real reasons to do so. name-calling does not change that.
-note the politicians who talk about "character" who are either completely failed (bush, cheney) or indicted (randy duke cunningham, tom delay) or under clouds of smarminess (larry craig). using the word "character" in this context is code for "not jesus-loving enough" or "not white enough". Is that what you meant? Or is there something specific that you can site that concerns you regarding his "character"? perhaps his work with the poor?
-obama has an actual website! you can go there yourself! it's here:
    http://www.barackobama.com/pdf/ObamaBlueprintForChange.pdf
you'll find immigration policy statements on page 38.
-nearly everyone passed legislation to "fund the troops" (yeas = 80, nays = 14) including Clinton and McCain. do we live in the same world? the world where the republicans set the tone and manipulated the public and had control over the house and the senate all these years? Have you heard "choose your battles wisely"? or "live to fight another day?" when bush started this travesty of a war, 70% of Americans were supportive of it. Now only 27% are. Now is the time.
-what ARE you talking about re: welfare? sheesh.
Obama has long-term goals. Google is a great resource and only the deeply lazy will not do their own research before tossing around specious claims.

Most questions in the debates are pro GOP and when aimed at Dems , always attacking.

Ask Mc Cain if he has a plan to fix the pedophilia problem of many of his GOP colleagues.

Nov.2.2007. Newly released investigation reports allege republican State Senator Curtis dressed up as a woman and engaged in an oral sex act at a Spokane adult bookstore before later rendezvousing at a downtown hotel for another sexual encounter with a man now under investigation for extortion. 26-year-old Michael Castagna told detectives he was offered $1,000 to have unprotected sex with Curtis, a Republican from La Center. An employee at the porn store told detectives that Curtis has been in the business three times in the last month and is called "the cross-dresser" by employees.

October 8/07 a Police investigation was released about Republican Rev. Gary Aldridge. An Alabama Republican Baptist minister who died in June 07. He was found hogtied and wearing two complete wet suits, including a face mask, diving gloves and slippers, rubberized underwear, a head mask, and a dildo up his ass, according to an autopsy report.
October 2007 the republican chairman of the St. Petersburg, Florida, City Council was accused of having sex with his two adopted daughters and their nanny. And he could have been in real trouble, too, if it turned out the nanny was an illegal.

    (7/07) Republican Senator Craigs ?
    Reverend Ted Haggard's ?
    Spokane Mayor Jim West, ?
