Obama On The Daily Show

Barack Obama appeared on The Daily Show on Monday, and Jon Stewart asked a doozy: "The Rev. Wright controversy, the flag pin controversy... Will you pull a bait-and-switch, sir, and enslave the white race? Is that your plan?" But Obama laughed it off. "That is not our plan, Jon, but I think your paranoia might make you suitable as a debate moderator."

Obama predicted "high turnout tomorrow" in Pennsylvania, and said that after starting 20 points down, "the polls are now showing us about 6 to 8" points behind. Obama argued Clinton's tough campaigning did him "a favor. ... She has put me through the paces."

Later, Stewart had Obama read some ordinary phrases to see if he could make anything sound inspiring. Watch it:

Here's part two:

Read the full media pool report below:

Pittsburgh Video Center, Pittsburgh, Pa.
6:45 p.m. Obama tapes an appearance on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" by video hookup.

Story continues below

Highlights at the top:

*Obama told Stewart during their interview that after starting out 20 points behind Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania, "The polls are now showing us about 6 to 8″ points behind.

*Stewart told Obama what the real concern voters have is: "The Rev. Wright controversy, the flag pin controversy. . . Will you pull a bait-and-switch, sir, and enslave the white race. Is that your plan? And if it is your plan, be honest, tell us now!" Obama's response (laughing, not mad): "That is not our plan, Jon, but I think your paranoia might make you suitable as a debate moderator."

For the rest, your pooler will divide this report into two sections - my mostly unsuccessful attempt to get a quote from Sen.Obama re. the Clinton campaign's ad invoking Osama Bin Laden, and then the Jon Stewart appearance.

Part I
On the way into the studio, I asked Obama why he felt it important to respond to the late-breaking Clinton ad with an ad of his own and what he thought of her ad. "Are you supposed to be doing this with the pool?" he asked, and laughed. Then he sat down and had the earpiece put in. I asked him if he'd give us a comment after the taping and he said, "Maybe, it depends on how well behaved you are." But then after the taping, I was whisked off ahead of him and didn't get to bug him again.

In between, I asked strategist David Axelrod again about the Clinton ad. His response: "The irony of it is, she supported the president on the war and that's one of the main reasons why Osama bin Laden is still free. And then you know to include him in this ad and emulate the sort of fear-mongering that we've seen over the last eight years is really ironic. She didn't have the judgment to see that we were diverting our attention from bin Laden and now she's using Bin Laden in an ad to say that she is the one who is ready to be president?"

Part II
(The way the studio was set up, you couldn't hear Jon Stewart's questions from the room Obama was in unless you had an earpiece, which I was not provided and you couldn't hear Obama's answers or see his face from the control room. So this is cobbled together from tapes we rolled in each room.)

Prior to the interview with Stewart, Obama sat in front of the camera (which was not rolling at the time) with an earpiece in listening to the show being taped. He swung his right leg back and forth and at times chuckled, grinned and laughed.

Stewart and the show's senior black correspondent and comedian Larry Wilmore talked about the speculation about whether Obama had been giving Clinton "the finger" after the debate last week. Cut to video. "Are you shi-ing me?" Stewart said. "THIS is a flip-off." And he demonstrated. "What if he was just scratching his face?" Stewart asked.

Wilmore joked, "Black people's face don't itch.. . black people have a whole set of physical gestures only we can understand." Wilmore called it "blanguage" which he defined as a "secret black language." Obama was laughing uncontrollably (still off camera).and briefly did his own subtle finger face itch. Obama's smiled waned a bit when Wilmore went on to this joke: "Look at Rev. Wright. All he said was G-D America and everybody went crazy. He could have said the same thing in blanguage and nobody would have been the wiser."

Here's what Obama told Stewart about the Pennsylvania primary once their interview started:
*"It is a mad dash but the people of Pennsylvania have been terrific."

*"We think there's going to be high turnout tomorrow." He said after starting 20 points down "the polls are not showing us about 6 to 8″ points behind.

*Obama said Clinton's tough campaigning did him "a favor" . . . . "She has put me through the paces," he said. If he wins the nomination, he said, everything's "going to be old news" by the general election.

Barack Obama appeared on The Daily Show on Monday, and Jon Stewart asked a doozy: "The Rev. Wright controversy, the flag pin controversy... Will you pull a bait-and-switch, sir, and enslave the white ...

Let's just be real here. I'd say most of us are voting against people. If Obama wins I'll be voting against McCain. If Hillary wins, I'll hold my nose but vote against McCain. Those of you who would rather punish the Democratic party for the nomination of the person you don't like are not true Democrats. That goes for Hilicrats and Obamacrats. It sickens me that in this day and age it will all come down to what do you hate the least. Do you vote for an old man to avoid voting for a black man or vote for a black man to avoid voting for a woman. Of course, if you are a McCain fan and a Republican, I respect your vote for your guy. All the other fair weather Democrats can STFU.

you don't have a clue do you? here's reality, I refuse as a proud lifetime (& i'm a grandmother) member of the democratic party, to cast my vote for someone who supported this war. if hilary gets the nod, my vote is with nader this time (who by the way i completely blame for 2000). i am looking at this from the point of view of someone who has been against this war from the start, well before it was cool to be that way. i will not let someone who is willing to send my family (my cousin has served 2 tours) over their to die for absolutely no reason or if they do have one it might change next week. what is wrong with a democrat voting their conscience & how does that make them disloyal? you sound like a republican. oh & by the way i not only am a grandmother but in every election since before I was 18 there has been either a bush or a clinton on the ballot, maybe that's the problem with this country.

Actually, I'm not voting against. I truely believe Obama has a new vision and desires to set new priorities. I'm voting FOR him and a new way of doing things. I would have voted for Hillary until so many flaws in her character and in her '36 years of experience" have come to light. So if Obama does not get the nomination, I will vote against McCain and for Clinton.

The only people who vote this way are those who've let ABC style debates depict how they cast their vote as opposed to information and policy position.

Sure, many people vote AGAINST someone. But I'm voting FOR Obama. If he loses, I'll vote McCain. Sorry. The party is broken! Blame Billary, who worked so very hard to divide us.

A few weeks ago, we were still united. Hillary changed that. She brought out the worst in all of us, and I am sick of it! If she manages to defeat Obama, no way I'm "rewarding" her with my vote.

Dems need to realize that Obama has expanded the party (perhaps by 350,000 in PA). I'm a registered "I", but always vote Dem. My husband is Rep, but switched to vote for Obama. Yet we'll both vote McCain over Hillary.

I'm tired of being smeared as "elitist"... I don't vote Dem because I have to. I care about those less fortunate. What I'm seeing now is THEY do not care about ME, which is foolish, because THEY need a Dem in the White House. MY kids will never fight an unjust war. MY neighborhood is safe and clean. MY job and income are secure. Hillary supporters NEED a Dem President, but they refuse to compromise!

If I'm willing to be generous and vote Dem, why can't they support my guy? If they insist on saying "Screw You" I can say it back. And I won't be the one to suffer. Someone should tell them to wake up and stop voting guns, pins, and prejudice. Oh wait, he did. They didn't listen.

I want to know why once again Hillary hit the shows the night before the voting? Keith O Laryy King and I don't know but guess there were other shows where she got free "ad time" and it does seem like they were pandering a bit. Larry King is a good friend of the clintons so is was a wash from get go. The MSM is starting to show a bit of what has recently come up as a wanring for the dems, that the MSM is big supporters of the republicans. Hell are not all of the massivly rich owners of the MSM in general ALL republicans willing to do what they can to do the bad thing to our candidate? I know that much and there was not any doubt that the MSM is playing games to keep the nasty race with Hillary going to November if they could!

Good points ljsfolly, a broke campaign looks for free media opportunities and the MSM obliges willingly when it suits their goals of prolonging the process and possibly damaging the Dem's.

Marked as favorite by mistake. Now to the business at hand, the truth is Hillary has no money!!!! Larry need ed to have Gov. Rendell on so he could explain the video of him praising Louis Farrakan. If Obama was a mud slinger like Hillary the video of Gov Rendell would have been all over the airways. Hillary and the good Govner are ducking an investigation about her Senate campaign fraud complaint w/the Federal Elections Commission.

I went to college in Galesburg and was there when the Maytag plant closed. The Maytag plant was on its way out long before Obama even became Illinois's senator. I'm not sure exactly what he could have done as a freshman senator that would have made Maytag reverse its long-made decision to move that plant to Reynosa, Mexico. Totally bogus.

Obama wants to take away those white people's guns so his "brothers" will ahve an easier time attacking and ripping them off. If the 2nd Amendment means a thing to you, like the right to self defense, then Obama ain't your guy, He helped make it illegal in Illinois to even have your legal shotgun ready to use to defend your house. He is more concerned about the safety of criminals of color than law abiding victims. He is all about race hustling and poverty pimping but he'll make you feel good as he rips you off!

My main problem with this message board, is the dangerous naivety that many people share here. It's this kind of naivety that gave us all the the terrible hangover in 2004 when Bush was reelected and we were all like "WTF JUST HAPPENED!" While it is important that we are all strident activist for the candidates we supports, and I will be candid when I say I support Clinton, we cant have the message of hope blind us from the political realities that exist in our country. For Obama to act like "the Flag Pin" "Reverend Wright" "Calling people Bitter" "his Wife saying she is proud of American for the first time" his wife saying she is frustrated that she cant get their daughter ballet lessons, gun rights--to act like these are wedge issues tht dont matter and that people wont care about in October is simply wrong. I think that Clinton has a ton of baggage too, maybe more than Obama, but I think she understands the the idiosyncratic nature of the electoral process and the issues that swing elections...Obama's initial "so what" response to the "bitter story" will probably cost him a 7-10 point loss tomorrow.

as for costing him a 7-10 point loss: THAT would be a freaking victory after being behind clinton by 25 points in clinton's own backyard. it is the rusty clinton machine that is failing to deliver what should be a massive victory for her. and lest we forget, a 7-10 point win for hillary only nets her 4 or 5 delegates.

How soon they forget... the wedge issues of "guns, gays, God, and the American Flag" were used successfully by the bushies in 2000 and 2004 to STRIKE FEAR into the voters. If Al Gore or John Kerry were to win, they would take them away, and your bibles too! The horror! And here you are getting sucked into it again.

What Obama was saying is that Americans won't fall for these fear-mongering, manufactured issues again, they are smarter than that. Certain issues are non-starters as they are afforded to us in the Bill of Rights, specifically the First and Second Amendments. The most important issues in this election are the ECONOMY, the IRAQ WAR, ENERGY, JOBS... oh, and the ECONOMY.

BTW, your girl Hill uses the same ol' Republican fear mongering in her new ad today. Are you smarter than that? She doesn't think so.
