Scroll down for Barack Obama's response to Bill Clinton's "race card" comments:

In a radio interview posted Monday, Bill Clinton claimed that Barack Obama's campaign has "played the race card on me." (Scroll down for audio). According to ABC News, Clinton was

"talking to station WHYY about the fallout over his comparison of Obama's South Carolina primary victory with the support of black Democrats to Jesse Jackson's primary wins. Those comments were portrayed by critics as an attempt to highlight Obama's race."

Clinton told the interviewer that "you have to really go some to play the race card on me." Clinton then lists the reasons why no one should portray him as a racist. He includes the fact that he has an "office in Harlem, and Harlem voted for Hillary, by the way." He goes on to say, "I have 1.4 Million people around the world, mostly people of color... on the world's least expensive AIDS drugs...."

At the very end of the interview, when Bill thinks he is no longer on the line, you can hear him saying, "I don't think I should take any shit from anybody on that, do you?"

Listen to the interview below:

Update: Obama was asked about Clinton's comments on WHYY today:

The Politico has the full exchange:

"Hold on a second, so former president Clinton dismissed my victory in South Carolina as being similar to Jesse Jackson and he's suggesting that somehow I had something to do with it? Ok, well then you better ask him about it," Obama said.

Story continues below

He was asked if, as Clinton said, his campaign had a secret plan to use race.

"Was there something that we had a plan to get him to say that my campaign was like Jesse Jackson's? I don't know what he is referring to unfortunately," he said, laughing.

Update: Questioned about the comments later in the day, Bill Clinton denied making them, and castigated the media for making hay over the issue. "I'm not going to play your games," he said. Full transcript below.

NBC/NJ: "Sir, what did you mean yesterday when you said that the Obama campaign was playing the race card on you?"

CLINTON: "When did I say that, and to whom did I say that?"

NBC/NJ: "On WHYY radio yesterday"

CLINTON: "No, no, no. That's not what I said. You always follow me around and play these little games, and I'm not going to play your games today. This is a day about election day. Go back and see what the question was, and what my answer was. You have mischaracterized it to get another cheap story to divert the American people from the real urgent issues before us, and I choose not to play your game today. Have a nice day."

NBC/NJ: "Respectfully sir, though, you did say ..."

CLINTON: "Have a nice day." [continues shaking hands with supporters]. I said what I said, you can go and look at the interview. And if you'll be real honest, you'll also report what the question was and what the answer was."

NBC/NJ: "They asked you if you regretted your comparing Jesse Jackson to Barack Obama on the day after the South Carolina primary."

CLINTON: "And I pointed out that I did not do that, and that I complimented them both. And that Jesse Jackson took no offense. And I called him myself, I said, 'Did you find that offensive?' And he said no.

Let me see if I have this straight. African Americans vote with near unanimity for Democrats and when there’s finally an African-America candidate with a chance to win the party’s nomination, the most recent Democratic President accuses that African-American candidate of ‘playing the race card’?

Best Democratic Primary…EVER.

Bill said Obama's campaign PLAYED the race card against him in South Carolina.
He NEVER said Obama's campaign is PLAYING the race card against him.

You guys really need to chill out your hypersensitivity. Gosh!

I cannot believe people want this guy anywhere near the WH after what we have gone through for the pass 7 years.

Bill is a liar.

Bill and his wife need to seek help. They lie entirely too much. It just isn’t healthy.

I have to admit, even after all the Bill Clinton ugliness, there is a little teeny tiny part of me that still thinks. "you gotta love this guy."

LOL... sure, if you're a thirteen year old boy lying to your mother! Bill has always had the liar gene, that broad smile and swanky body language that made him an effective flim-flam man. But it's also one of those traits that wears thin. When guys like that get older, the cute wears off and they end up pathetic and jealous of the new kid on the block! Go to your highschool reunion, and see for yourself!

Is the kitchen heating up Bill? Quick get out!

What a hyprocrite, who is the whiner now?

I used to respect and like this man, I can barely look at him now. Enough is enough. Even if she wins tonight, she can't win the nomination. MATH - do they understand how it works

please describe all these lies obama has told- but then, please be sure to supply VIDEO or AUDIO PROOF that disputes those lies.

what's that? you can't? ok. well, if you're interested, hillary and bill's lies can actually be debunked with video or audio proof. meanwhile, all you've got is a statement of your opinion.

that ain't gonna do.

Poor Bill. Why does the country need another black president since we have already had one, i.e. Bill Clinton, the man who claims to have been the first black president. And of course Bill never lies, cheats, or steals.

I have a feeling that the price of his speaking engagements has been going down with Hillary's chances of winning this thing. Gravy train is coming to a stop. Poor Bill.

LOL this is great! Bill seems to go from saying "I'm around black people all the time - look at my Harlem office - so I'm not racist!" to "I'm not going to play your silly game because I stuck my foot in my mouth - AGAIN!"

And this is the same man that said "It's politics. If you don't want to take a hit maybe you shouldn't be in the game." That has now morphed into "I don't think I should have to take shit off anybody for that." Well, guess what Billy, the same rules apply to all. If you're going to be involved in this race, you're going to have to take a certain amount of shit, whether you think you should have to take it or not.

Have y'all noticed that over the last few days the Clintons and their campaign has been really fond of saying - when it suits their purposes, anyway - that they'd "rather focus on the issues". If they can't say that, then they just refuse to answer, like Bill did today with this question and like Wolfson did when he was asked how Hillary and MoveOn.org disagreed. Apparently that one has been answered though. Looks like Hillary wants to "win in Iraq". Seems to me that means she won't be pulling out troops anytime soon. Kinda hard to win without any players...

The question was asked about what it says that he and his wife have to double team senator Obama, doing a two on one in the primaries. Bill answered well Jesse Jackson won south carolina in 1984 and 1988. Hushpo has this video so if they wanted to pretend themselves in any way responsible media, they would post that video with it. Bill was standing outside when the question was asked and he answered with Jesse Jackson stats, something that was completely unrelated to the question in any way, shape, or form. Why not post the original video along with his newly scripted lies?

Bill is famous for his revisionist history... here is what happened for all you out there in Hillary land. She made a tactical decision to go Brown over Black. Hillary initially believed that she would get 30-40 percent of the black vote... after all Bill was the first black president right. After Iowa though older black people like half my relatives started to believe in the viability of Obama, I mean if an all white state like Iowa is going to support Obama how could black people not. It was at that moment, the 9 pt win (which turned into a 14 pt win) in Iowa that Hillary fell bellow the 30-40 mark in black votes and her campaign, Mark short sighted ahole Penn decided to boot the black vote. He thought well, since you can't get it for SC why worry about it. This race will be over at super tuesday and the black vote is irrelevant then. CA is hispanic, NY is in Hillary's pocket, Mass is well Mass, we're were going to lose Illinois, and Missouri is basically a southern state.

That's when the race card went out, NH, NV, SC, Obama was suddenly the black candidate. She did it to marginalize him to win states like MO and Mass and to solidify her working class base. She thought she would have all of Feb - Aug to repair the damage and if worst came to worst she could always just offer him the VP, black people would love her right? That's the decision she made and she has to friggin live with it. Black people are the back bone of this party. We vote 90-95% Dem every election. In the future, the hispanic vote will dominate politics, but the future ain't now.

The mind-shattering success of the Obama operation has actually cause a Hillary and Bil mental breakdown. They go off blubbering and then they deny it; they have run out of money, are in debt, have lent the campaign their own money and now, if they continue, threaten decimating their nest egg!!!
Go Obama. Obama 08.

I cant see voters believing her ability when she is not even through the primary season and shes out of money. People are voting with their dollars and the person with the most money will be the President. Its simple economics.

What was that line I keep hearing about heat and kitchens.

Bill and Hilliary . . . stop all the g.d. whining and look up Matthew 7: 1-5: "And why beholdest you the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast the beam out of thine own eye and then thou shalt see clearly to cast the mote out of thy brother's eye."

If you were capable of doing this in the *first* place Bill, Al Gore would have been elected in 2000 and we wouldn't have been put through the last eight years; and if the truth mattered at all to you, Hillary, you might actually be ahead in the polls with the nomination locked up.
