PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Rodham Clinton ground out a gritty victory in the Pennsylvania primary Tuesday night, defeating Barack Obama and staving off elimination in their historic race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"Some counted me out and said to drop out," the former first lady told supporters cheering her triumph in a state where she was outspent by more than two-to-one. "But the American people don't quit. And they deserve a president who doesn't quit, either."

"Because of you, the tide is turning."

Her victory, while comfortable, set up another critical test in two weeks time in Indiana. North Carolina votes the same day, and Obama already is the clear favorite in a Southern state with a large black population.

"Now it's up to you, Indiana," Obama said at a rally of his own in Evansville after Pennsylvania denied him a victory that might have made the nomination his.

He criticized John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting, by name as offering more of the same policies advocated by President Bush. And he took aim at Clinton without mentioning her by name. "We can calculate and poll-test our positions and tell everyone exactly what they want to hear," he said. "Or we can be the party that doesn't just focus on how to win, but why we should."

In a campaign marked by increasingly personal attacks, Clinton was winning 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent for her rival with 94 percent counted in Pennsylvania.

A preliminary tabulation showed her gaining at least 52 national convention delegates to 46 for Obama, with 60 still to be awarded.

Story continues below

That left Obama with 1,694.5 delegates, and Clinton with 1,561.5, according to the AP tally.

Clinton scored her victory by winning the votes of blue-collar workers, women and white men in an election where the economy was the dominant concern. Obama was favored by blacks, the affluent and voters who recently switched to the Democratic Party, a group that comprised about one in ten Pennsylvania voters, according to the surveys conducted by The Associated Press and the TV networks.

More than 80 percent of voters surveyed as they left their polling places said the nation was already in a recession.

A six-week campaign allowed time for intense courtship of the voters.

She showed her blue-collar bona fides one night by knocking down a shot of whiskey, then taking a mug of beer as a chaser. Obama went bowling in his attempt to win over working-class voters.

Clinton's win marked at least the third time she had triumphed when defeat might have sent her to the campaign sidelines.

She won in New Hampshire last winter after coming in third in the kickoff Iowa caucuses, and she won primaries in Ohio and Texas several weeks later after losing 11 straight contests.

Her victory also gave Clinton a strong record in the big states as she attempts to persuade convention superdelegates to look past Obama's delegate advantage and his lead in the popular vote in picking a nominee. She had previously won primaries in Texas, California, Ohio and her home state of New York, while Obama won his home state of Illinois.

Clinton projected confidence to the end of the Pennsylvania campaign, scheduling an election-night rally in Philadelphia. Obama signaled in advance he expected to lose, flying off to Indiana for an evening appearance even before the polls closed.

Flush with cash, Obama reported spending $11.2 million on television in the state, more than any place else. That compared with $4.8 million for Clinton.

The tone of the campaign was increasingly personal _ to the delight of Republicans and McCain, who has been gaining in the polls while the Democrats battle in primaries deep into the spring.

"In the last 10 years Barack Obama has taken almost $2 million from lobbyists, corporations and PACs. The head of his New Hampshire campaign is a drug company lobbyist, in Indiana an energy lobbyist, a casino lobbyist in Nevada," said a Clinton commercial that aired in the final days of the race.

Obama responded with an ad that accused Clinton of "eleventh-hour smears paid for by lobbyist money." It said that unlike his rival, he "doesn't take money from special interest PACs or Washington lobbyists _ not one dime."

Also to the delight of Republicans, the six-week layoff between primaries produced a string of troubles for the Democrats.

Obama was forced onto the defensive by incendiary comments by his pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, then triggered controversy on his own by saying small-town Americans cling to guns and religion because of their economic hardships.

Clinton conceded that she had not landed under sniper fire in Bosnia while first lady, even though she said several times that she had. And she replaced her chief strategist, Mark Penn, after he met with officials of the Colombian government seeking passage of a free trade agreement that she opposes.

McCain campaigned in Youngstown, Ohio, during the day Tuesday, telling residents of the hard-hit steel town that free trade can help solve their problems.

"The biggest problem is not so much what's happened with free trade, but our inability to adjust to a new world economy," McCain said during a town hall-style meeting at Youngstown State University. McCain's message was something of a political gamble in an area where international trade agreements are not popular.

The remaining Democratic contests are primaries in North Carolina, Indiana, Oregon, Kentucky, West Virginia, Montana, South Dakota and Puerto Rico, and caucuses in Guam.

People aren't one issue voters. They see how prepared she is for the highest office in the world. There are really minimal policy differences between them. The difference is in her experience and strength. Obama just can't compete with that.

hilly better enjoy her last victory.....

Obama will win the candidacy ......

We have had Liers to govern us for the last 8 years. hilly would do the same.

Truly I am amazed that hilly supporters wont see that the running of her campaign , going broke, stiffing vendors, twisting every positive into a negative . Talking around each pointed question without answering is exactly how she will run the government

Prior to PA, Hillary needed 20+ point victories in ALL remaining states to catch Obama.

PA with its tailor-made Hillary demographics, and support of most of the party establishment including Gov Rendell and the mayors of Philly and Pittsburgh, WAS HILLARY'S BEST REAL CHANCE TO GET THAT 20 POINT MARGIN.

She started with a margin of more than 20 points and LOST that margin.

In order to win now, the margin she needs in the 9 remaining contests has gone UP.

Nothing changes here, except that Hillary's numbers just got a little worse.

This is a nice morale booster for the Clinton campaign, but the math just moved closer to Obama.

The problem for Obama is that he did cut all the way into her lead and even over took her until people had to make the hard choice for the vote. This shows that at the time of the voting they can't say she had any advantage. She was being told to get out of the race, he's the presumptive nominee. The voters want to make clear that they don't want that. He wasn't able to convince voters after outspending her 3 to 1 that he is the best choice. If he can't even convince democrats, then how is he going to convince independents and republicans?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:15 AM on 04/23/2008

Oh, I don't think, the media narrative has been that he is the presumptive nominee, not even close. They don't talk about the math because making it look like she can still legitimately win is good for ratings. Most voters don't study this stuff...they listen to the news, and many don't even do that closely.

By the way, nationally Obama's lead over Clinton is double-digits. Polls in CA indicate if the race were held today, Obama would win CA. He has had to overcome tremendous name recognition of the Clintons, and Feb 5 contests would look different if held today.

According to the OFFICIAL Pennsylvania Dept of State Results, as of 3am EST:

Clinton: 54.3
Obama: 45.7

That is a spread of 8.6 %.
(*Note to those with difficulty reading numbers... that is not a double digit lead).

I just looked at the site and those are not the final numbers. That is only 99.13% reporting. Even if it goes down to 8%, that is still a tremendous victory for Hillary. No one is saying how McCain only got 73% of the Republican vote, and they say he's a winner?

borrowed this from another poster but IT BEARS REPEATING: because if many of these Hillary voters are in fact Limbaugh inspired Reps, what does that say about her ability to stay in the race and continue destroying the party??? the exit polls speak the truth.

There are some very odd numbers in the CBS exit poll
http://election.cbsnews.com/campaign2008/exitPoll.shtml?state=PA&race=P&jurisdiction=0&party=D

30% of those who voted for Hillary in the PA primary plan to vote for McCain in the GE if Hillary wins the nomination. 5% of those who voted for her won"t vote at all if she wins the nomination. 10% of those who voted for Obama plan to vote for McCain if Obama wins the nomination.

Can anyone explain this? Are people crazy or am I just reading the data wrong?

The way I heard it, Pennsylvania runs a closed primary, i.e., in order to vote, one had to be preregistered as either a Democrat or a Republican.

However...now that the primaries are over, how many of these newfound PA "Democratic" voters for Whoreilly will "see the light" and change their stated affiliation BACK to the Republican Party?

It might behoove Obama's staff to look into this.

Truth be told, I'm guessing Whoreilly actually LOST by 3-8% of the TRUE BLUE Democratic vote.

Since Obama actually won that demographic, I'm sure he'd rather not delve onto that topic.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:28 AM on 04/23/2008

That chart is actually quite confusting. What it says is that if the election is Hillary/McCain, 10% of the voters will vote for McCain. Then it says, of the 10% that will vote for McCain, 30% actually voted for Hillary in the primary. So 3% of the voters in the Democratic primary actually voted for Hillary but won't vote for her in the fall...this is the Operation Chaos noise.

However, 15% of the voters said they will vote for McCain if the ballot is Obama/Mccain, and of these 10% voted for Obama...meaning 1.5% of the Democratic voters actually voted for Obama but would vote for McCain in the fall.

So the net effect of the two is 1.5%, or approximately 34,500...we don't know how many are Limbaugh crossovers, or how many may be just registered Democrats who actually like McCain, but did not want to change their party affiliation to vote in a primary that didn't matter since McCain is the presumptive nominee.

Anyway, that's my take.

Aside from crying in my Kool-aid, just want to point out that if Obama is raising $40M a month, he raises $1.3 M a day, so Hillary’s $500K this evening is Obama’s AVERAGE take.

Calm down.

Give a bit of money to Obama' s campaing on May 1st.
We have 1.5M Obama donors.
Go down to the local Obama HQ and see what you can do to help.
Help register new voters; call friends and family.

I am from Indiana; Indiana is NOT PA or OH; IN is winnable.

No whining, just do what we can to help win IN and NC.
Do not be discouraged.

Obama would do well with a 2 pronged approach in IN and NC:

No negativity but a rapid response team to call out Hillary's lies, innuendos; rebut her lies with facts.

Attack her own records; just facts. No mud.
Irak vote, no reading of the intelligence report before the vote; Iran Kyl-Lieberman vote. Her support for NAFTA, etc...

Keep focusing on the big picture of a NEW kind of politics, returning the government to the people.

Focus on gas price and food price solutions.

Outspend her and break her bank by outspending her in IN and NC.

Obama had to outspend Clinton in PA. She had every city mayor and the governor as supporters. As the establishment candidate, Clinton had all the advantages in the state. And the Philadelphia mayor and Gov. Rendell must not have been attending to their city and state business because they were actively and constantly campaigning for Clinton for 6 weeks. Now we've heard that the Republicans in North Carolina are meeting to run very negative ads about Obama to cut into his lead there. Makes one wonder why the Republicans are so intent on running against Hillary Clinton instead of Barack Obama. The Republicans would even try to sabotage the Democratic primary to get Hillary the nomination. They must be so afraid of running against Obama.

I agree, Clinton had the two big city mayors & the popular Governor (I love Ed Rendell). Also, she's had 20 years of name recognition, Obama is a new brand. Obama is in the black in his campaign. If he wants to throw some money around that's fine with me, generally he's a frugal guy.

Well PA has let us down. Obama put up a good fight and turned a 27% lead into a 10% lead. He's got heart. He had them shaking in their boots there for a while. But Hillary resorted to name calling and fear mongering again and the good ole folks of PA took the bait. hook, line & sinker. Anybody who believes she's fighting for them and not for herself is in denial. Gov Rendell said it straight from the beginning. White people in PA won't vote for a black man. (period)

I have just realized today, how smart Mark Penn's strategy really is. It's true that the more her camp marginalizes and insults the other side, the less likely people who already dislike will vote for her. HOWEVER, at the same time this reinforces her own supporters by suggesting that they are "too smart to be fooled". Whenever Obama defends against her attacks in even the slightest way, Clinton plays the "victim" card and twists his words, again strengthening her own supporters and dividing the Democratic party.

This is exactly why her supporters insist that Hillary is the most experienced candidate, despite being unable to name one significant piece of legislation she has accomplished in her career. Voters who are politically aware understand that their platforms are 95% identical and are far more inclined to vote for Obama (e.g. MoveOn). Clinton is just feeding on the ignorance, racism, cynicism and fears of uneducated voters. This is shown in polls with nearly a 65-35 lead for Clinton in high-school educated voters and a 60-40 split for those who answered "race mattered in their decision", but a lead for Obama in every other group.

In essence, it is the Clinton supporters who are "drinking the Kool-Aid" and are believing her lies every step of the way. The Clinton campaign is cold, calculated and extremely dangerous for the Democratic Party. Like Hillary said in the ABC debate, "I may be many things, but I am not stupid".
