PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Rodham Clinton ground out a gritty victory in the Pennsylvania primary Tuesday night, defeating Barack Obama and staving off elimination in their historic race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

"Some counted me out and said to drop out," the former first lady told supporters cheering her triumph in a state where she was outspent by more than two-to-one. "But the American people don't quit. And they deserve a president who doesn't quit, either."

"Because of you, the tide is turning."

Her victory, while comfortable, set up another critical test in two weeks time in Indiana. North Carolina votes the same day, and Obama already is the clear favorite in a Southern state with a large black population.

"Now it's up to you, Indiana," Obama said at a rally of his own in Evansville after Pennsylvania denied him a victory that might have made the nomination his.

He criticized John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting, by name as offering more of the same policies advocated by President Bush. And he took aim at Clinton without mentioning her by name. "We can calculate and poll-test our positions and tell everyone exactly what they want to hear," he said. "Or we can be the party that doesn't just focus on how to win, but why we should."

In a campaign marked by increasingly personal attacks, Clinton was winning 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent for her rival with 94 percent counted in Pennsylvania.

A preliminary tabulation showed her gaining at least 52 national convention delegates to 46 for Obama, with 60 still to be awarded.

That left Obama with 1,694.5 delegates, and Clinton with 1,561.5, according to the AP tally.

Clinton scored her victory by winning the votes of blue-collar workers, women and white men in an election where the economy was the dominant concern. Obama was favored by blacks, the affluent and voters who recently switched to the Democratic Party, a group that comprised about one in ten Pennsylvania voters, according to the surveys conducted by The Associated Press and the TV networks.

More than 80 percent of voters surveyed as they left their polling places said the nation was already in a recession.

A six-week campaign allowed time for intense courtship of the voters.

She showed her blue-collar bona fides one night by knocking down a shot of whiskey, then taking a mug of beer as a chaser. Obama went bowling in his attempt to win over working-class voters.

Clinton's win marked at least the third time she had triumphed when defeat might have sent her to the campaign sidelines.

She won in New Hampshire last winter after coming in third in the kickoff Iowa caucuses, and she won primaries in Ohio and Texas several weeks later after losing 11 straight contests.

Her victory also gave Clinton a strong record in the big states as she attempts to persuade convention superdelegates to look past Obama's delegate advantage and his lead in the popular vote in picking a nominee. She had previously won primaries in Texas, California, Ohio and her home state of New York, while Obama won his home state of Illinois.

Clinton projected confidence to the end of the Pennsylvania campaign, scheduling an election-night rally in Philadelphia. Obama signaled in advance he expected to lose, flying off to Indiana for an evening appearance even before the polls closed.

Flush with cash, Obama reported spending $11.2 million on television in the state, more than any place else. That compared with $4.8 million for Clinton.

The tone of the campaign was increasingly personal _ to the delight of Republicans and McCain, who has been gaining in the polls while the Democrats battle in primaries deep into the spring.

"In the last 10 years Barack Obama has taken almost $2 million from lobbyists, corporations and PACs. The head of his New Hampshire campaign is a drug company lobbyist, in Indiana an energy lobbyist, a casino lobbyist in Nevada," said a Clinton commercial that aired in the final days of the race.

Obama responded with an ad that accused Clinton of "eleventh-hour smears paid for by lobbyist money." It said that unlike his rival, he "doesn't take money from special interest PACs or Washington lobbyists _ not one dime."

Also to the delight of Republicans, the six-week layoff between primaries produced a string of troubles for the Democrats.

Obama was forced onto the defensive by incendiary comments by his pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, then triggered controversy on his own by saying small-town Americans cling to guns and religion because of their economic hardships.

Clinton conceded that she had not landed under sniper fire in Bosnia while first lady, even though she said several times that she had. And she replaced her chief strategist, Mark Penn, after he met with officials of the Colombian government seeking passage of a free trade agreement that she opposes.

McCain campaigned in Youngstown, Ohio, during the day Tuesday, telling residents of the hard-hit steel town that free trade can help solve their problems.

"The biggest problem is not so much what's happened with free trade, but our inability to adjust to a new world economy," McCain said during a town hall-style meeting at Youngstown State University. McCain's message was something of a political gamble in an area where international trade agreements are not popular.

The remaining Democratic contests are primaries in North Carolina, Indiana, Oregon, Kentucky, West Virginia, Montana, South Dakota and Puerto Rico, and caucuses in Guam.

FINALLY, SOUR, RESIGNED PEOPLE ALL ACROSS PENNSYLVANIA HAVE THEIR DAY OF RECKONING. The slapfest between the junior Senator from Illinois and the junior Senator from New York reached its apex today in Pennsylvania's rich, contrarian soil. Today's highly anticipated brawl is billed as potentially a knock-out fight. I say may the best bitch win.
Crabby, a bitter, native Pennsylvanian, suspects that those who are betting on a KO will lose: I'm waging Billary wins with an 8 to 12 percent margin. But I'll happily eat crow if I'm wrong; crow is a constant on the bitter's menu.Because 'bitter' is the name of today's game, Crabby has scoured the web looking for all things jaded to entertain the hard-hearted. Check it out while you're waiting for the final score. It's a reminder that you don't need to hail from Pennsylvania; bitter is a state of mind.

LOL! Right. And if I hear her tell one more story of "I met a little girl..." I will rip off my own ears and put them through the shredder. This broad is so fake it's incredible. I can just see her in Indiana putting on an apron and singing "Coal Miner's Daughter". Oh wait, she'll do that in WV.

What's the point??? If people will vote for someone who lies about sniper fire with witnesses, well... what is the point of elections at all. At this point, it doesn't seem to matter. Let the Republicans figure out Iraq and the economy. Seriously. there is something very wrong in the U.S.A.

But she didn't, did she? And why's that? Because Obama's organization is better at organizing and better at fundraising.

Yes, it does.

It tells me that bigotted, dumbassed voters in Pennsylvania are just as bigotted and dumbassed as their fellow bigotted, dumbassed voters in Ohio.

And thanks to these bigotted, dumbassed "voters", Amerika will continue to suffer because of their STUPIDITY and PERFIDITY.

Tonight, I really HATE EVERY DUMBASSED VOTER in this country.

Some are blinded by race, some are scared of what is different. I can't fault people for blind ignorance but I do have faith that through ALL of this that Senator Obama will prevail and become the next POTUS.

That figure is exaggerated. Given the fact that he is a 1st time national candidate campaigning in a state that has ties to and has known the Clinton brand for over 20yrs he did remarkably well. Especially, considering he was down by as many as 20pts in early polling and the democratic establishment in the state turned out with all of their resources for her early. Also, remember that PA gov. Rendell stated that some folks in his state WOULD NOT vote for Sen. Obama because he is black.

Sen. Obama had everything to gain and really nothing to lose. This just lays a foundation for the general election.

It doesn't say what you're implying. Clinton came into PA with a huge lead. The only thing that broke her fall was the backing of the party machine. Doesn't matter, though, she needed to win PA by a very large margin and she didn't. She may have won PA but she has lost the party's nomination.

How can HC supporters with a straight face, pretend that someone who is NATIONALLY and GLOBALLY known for the past 16 years is an underdog?

She's HILLARY CLINTON for God's sake. We need to ask the question, 'What's her problem?' She's a former First Lady. How can she be in debt? Why is she behind in the delegate count and the popular vote?

The fact of the matter is, SHE can't knock HIM off. She had MASSIVE leads over him at the beginning of this and now she's behind, and her campaign is on the precipice of bankruptcy. Hold HC to the same standards that you hold Obama to.

If she wins this fairly, more power to her. If she wins this via the questionable tactics she's exhibited in the past few months; we Dems have a problem.

Obama does not know how to reach the "bitter" demographic. And he needs to figure it out. It's an important constituency that Hillary knows how to talk to. And she has state machinery set up for years around these voters. Obama has some work to do.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:00 PM on 04/22/2008

You are correct that Obama needs to find better ways of reaching certain demographics, but it's not as bad as it may appear now. Once he seals the nomination he'll have the full backing of the Democratic Party which will substantially help him reach certain traditionally Democratic populations who have been going for Clinton. While many Democrats who support Clinton are threatening to vote for McCain, I believe that once Obama has the nomination and the general election starts and once they learn more about McCain, they'll flock to Obama. There is still a lot of time between now and November and McCain has gotten little scrutiny in recent months because the Democratic Pirmaries have been dominating the news. Once the machinery of the Democratic Party and all the money that Obama has been raising is aimed at McCain, I'm willing to bet he doesn't stand a chance. Clinton supporting Democrats will come around--the fact is, Clinton and Obama are very close on the issues and McCain is far to the right. Democrats may threaten to support McCain now, but they'll support Obama because of the issues when the time comes.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:33 PM on 04/22/2008

not stupid, bitter

Now there's a good, uniting, bring them together, well thought out statement. Well done. I am sure Obama is very proud of you.

It always amazes me how people who profess to admire and love a candidate so much can act and speak in a way that is so opposite of what he supposedly stands for.

"PA voters are just stupid!" No wonder the every day American thinks your candidate is elitist. No wonder he hasn't a prayer to win in November.

Say hi to President McCain.

You are kidding. Right? You can't really expect an intelligent person to swallow that kind of nonsense. Obama has been a stellar candidate compared to the Clintons. He has NOT gone after her in the way she has gone after him or in the way the Republicans would in the Fall. She may talk nice in front of audiences but in the dark she has her surrogates hissing like vipers. ALL the negatives stem from her and Obama has kept his himself clean and honest and intact, even though it's been to his utter detriment.

Obama closed a very wide gap in PA. If the margin stays at 8 percent, then this race really didn't do anything for either candidate. It looks like Indiana is going to be, as Obama puts it the "tie breaker."

With 'only' an 8% win (assuming the numbers hold up for Hillary) she has lived to fight another day - but her odds of winning the overall campaign drop even further.

Figure that Obama is going to win NC, and is likely to take OR by similar percentages that Clinton just took PA. Mostly that will cancel out whatever small relative gains she has made today.

If Clinton doesn't sweep, and sweep big in IN, KY, WV, MT and SD she is fated to lose. Barring Obama having some serious breakdown, or the superdelegates defecting en masse from a candidate that leads the popular vote, the caucus votes (almost all), and pleged delegate totals to one that ran an inferior campaign and lost across the board - she is done. Stick the fork in her. Put the coins over her eyes.

If she doesn't chose to drop out - that is her perogative. But it is a campaign that is destined to come up short for the convention this summer.

Ugh. I really hate this whole process. I cast my vote for Sen. Obama this afternoon. Even took my grandparents to vote and they haven't done so in years and they voted for Sen. Obama. Time to move on. I'll be sending in my voter registration information tomorrow to turn my affiliation back to Independent as it originally was. As I said before though if Clinton ends up getting this nomination somehow I won't be voting for McCain or her but I will vote for a third party candidate.

To be completely honest I can't stand the media pundits save for a few such as Oldermann and Maddow. The rest talk as if they have first hand knowledge of what people think and if I have to hear Pat Buchann(sp?) speak again I'm going to go crazy.

I just hope the ending margin is close and that the superdelegates will come out in force for Sen. Obama and end this already. Hillary Clinton I'm certain is only doing what she is doing by staying in this for so long is to make sure Sen. Obama loses to Sen. McCain so she can run in 2012. With each passing day I'm certain of it.

Oh, we know Hillary Clinton more than we want to know her. I have yet to hear a Clinton supporter tell me exactly when the Clintons have done for the PEOPLE.

I went to see Hillary + Bill yesterday in Market Square in Pittsburgh. What a breath of fresh air ! Sanity prevailed and you felt like you were being talked to like adults. The master orator Bill spoke spontaneously for 45 minutes ,stalling for time , until Hillary arrived. He explained Hillary's background and her "specific" plans for her Presidency. He meticulously explained her health care plan , which is superior to Obama's. I've never been to an Obama rally but I've read about them and heard them described as "revival services" where people are whipped up into a frenzy over hope and change and people pass out, etc. I'm sorry--that doesn't sound very healthy to me ; I would feel embarrassed . I'm not looking for a messiah ; just someone who can get the job done. And , in my book, that's Hillary. Read this article about Bill's visit to Millvale on Sunday; the last 2 paragraphs are gold. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08112/875235-52.stm#

You love Rev. Wright talk, or what Mrs.BO said about how she is proud of the country for the first time. which one will win you the white house this fall?

just repeating over and over they are liars doesn't do anyone any good, particularly not Barack Obama. His candidacy has suffered greatly from his vicious immature supporters.

Off topic: I used to walk through Market Square everyday when I lived there to get to my job. :)

On topic: The vote is still close and delegates are what count. Celebrate now, weep later. Enjoy!

you've been sold a bill of goods if you think the only thing that "counts" is the delegate count. Delegates can change their minds up to the convention, first of all. Second, there are many more factors involved besides the delegate count in picking the nominee. Thank heavens we have Superdelegates because they will NOT send up a nominee that has lost ALL the big swing states, who is lagging in Superdelegates and soon to be behind in the popular vote count.
He should have cleaned up his whole situation before he ran, got rid of Wright, denounced Ayers and been more transparent about Rezco (ie release his state senate records which he so far will not) and then run for President. The fact that he didn't do that, shows a great degree of arrogance and an elitist attitude.
The goal is to win in November. As charismatic as he is, he can not win in November on the first time voter/youth vote, just isn't possible. That is the only vote he's got aside from the AA vote. That is not enough to win the nation.

Its best to reserve comment for that which you know. People have passed out all rallies Clinton and Obama as well. No one has deemed this man a Messiah. Its the media that has created this image.

I can't imagine what miasma you call home if the Clintons are a breath of fresh air. Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

This is a win for Senator Obama, especially if the margin stays this close.

And I just made another donation, gotta keep the momentum going! :-)
