Tony Snow, CNN Commentator: A (Long) Litany Of Past Sins

Tony Snow has begun his new gig at CNN, and ancient declaimer of non-sequitirs Larry King's heart is so a-flutter that you'd think CNN had just hired a lissome blond, 50 years his junior. Snow brings to the table many years of work over at CNN rival Fox News, who he still says he loves. He has even recently said that he would "walk over broken glass" for Bill O'Reilly -- which sounds impressive until you realize that walking barefoot over broken glass is far more pleasant than listening to him. He also served about a year and a half as the Press Secretary for the Bush White House, but he eventually had to step down, citing the mounting cost of his health care. I guess flacking for the plutocracy doesn't exactly pay the bills! It's enough to make one deeply, deeply, deeply, deeply, deeply, deeply suspicious of the validity of trickle-down economics, and I cannot sarcastically overemphasize this enough.

It may be a tall order, even for CNN, but one would hope that Snow would bring to his new job a renewed commitment to resecting the suffixes from the word "truthiness." But, if his past is any indication, this will be no mean feat for Snow to pull off. Here are numerous reasons why:

April 2008: Snow told Dennis Miller that Barack Obama voted "present" upwards of 160 times in the U.S. Senate. But, OH NOES! It turns out he never did, ever, not even once!

December 2007: Snow goes before the graduation ceremony at Oklahoma Christian University and tells them that there is a "War on God" going on the United States, and that "The average Iranian is more Pro-American than virtually any college faculty in this country."

And maybe CNN should have vetted Snow a little better, because in the same month, Bill O'Reilly told Snow, "But you can't go over to CNN. I mean, that's the devil over there. You can't. You know. You're a religious guy. You can't go into the pagan throne over there."

July 2007: Snow assesses the surge thusly: "I think what you've seen is a declining level in the overall pace of attacks." All true, so long as by "declining" you mean to say, "Why won't they stop attacking us? Didn't we tell them that the Surge was working?"

And here is how Snow captured the awesome moral struggle his boss underwent in deciding to forgive bootlicking jerkoff Scooter Libby: "I will simply tell you that the President, after long consideration, weeks and weeks of consideration, came to the conclusion that 30 months in jail was excessive, and that he is comfortable with the punishment, which is still quite severe, of $250,000, a felony conviction, and two years of probation."

And also, this:

Story continues below
advertisement

June 2007: Snow demonstrated tremendous proficiency this month in a time-honored Bush tradition, namely: pretending that widely reported on White House promises were never made.

Also: he said this:

Reporter: Are there any members of the Bush family or this administration in this war?

Snow: Yes, the president. The president is in the war every day.

Reporter: Well, that isn't my question.

Snow: Well, no, no. If you ask any president who is the commander in chief ...

Reporter: On the front lines, wherever?

Snow: The president.

And, from The Daily Show:

April 2007: Snow says that the White House never ever ever attempted to link Saddam Hussein to 9-11, and the Dorian Gray-like self-portrait Snow hides in a closet at his home grew several more rancid-looking pocks as well as some jagged, gangrenous scars.

March 2007: Snow tells reporters that the Democrats' Iraq plans were a "recipe for defeat." But when asked to describe what the "recipe for success" was, Snow couldn't answer, because Cindy McCain hadn't found it on the Food Network website yet.

Also,

He was also cynical enough to assert that Congress had "no oversight responsibility over the White House." Suck on that, Separation of Powers!

And who could forget Snow's brilliant defense of sending poorly trained troops to surge themselves silly in the middle of a combat zone? "Well, but they can get desert training elsewhere, like in Iraq."

February 2007: On the White House's plans for war in Iraq, Snow says, "I'm not sure anything went wrong." So, the Iraq War went perfectly according to plan? If so, that's terrifying. How terrifying? Uhm...a lot terrifying. ALL terrifying.

Of course, months later, Snow had a difficult time explaining why - if the war in Iraq was going so swimmingly - there was a need for a War Czar.

Plus, what on earth are we going to do when Greenpeace gets the bomb and starts indiscriminately nuking whalers and baby seal clubbers?

November 2006: Step right up, ladies and gentlemen! And prepare to witness the brain-inflaming sight of Tony Snow, clumsily going on background - or maybe not...but maybe so! - right before your very eyes, using only the power of flimsy deception!

September 2006: George Bush announces that "We will stay the course" in Iraq. But Tony didn't get the memo, or hear Bush say that, or have even a dimming awareness of White House policy, because he told reporters, "The idea that somehow we're staying the course is just wrong. It is absolutely wrong."

Also, Tony Snow worked hard to obfuscate the truth about the poor pre-war planning, insisting, "I'm not going to hold Donald Rumsfeld accountable." Months later, holding Rumsfeld accountable became the thing to do inside the Beltway.

August 2006: Tony Snow admonished that a vote for Ned Lamont was the equivalent of voting for another 9-11. So people voted for Joe Lieberman instead, which was a vote for appeasing the perpetrators of 9-11. The system works.

June 2006: Here's how Snow tastefully commemorated the news of the 2,500th fatality in Iraq: "It's a number, and every time there's one of these 500 benchmarks people want something."

Oh, and perhaps most interesting thing you will learn about Tony Snow is the fact that way back when, Snow used to say all kinds of things about Dubya. Different things. Mean things! But then Snow went to work for him, which is like waking up every day of the week, coming face-to-face with the stern and unforgiving visage of your own conscience, and voting "present."

Tony Snow is but the latest addition to an increasingly right leaning CNN. I remember the good old days when they were neutral, but ownership of these media companies have become more apt to inject their personal leanings. Just look at Murdoch's Fox Network. The same goes for newspapers like the Wall Street Journal, which used to be non political until Murdoch bought it.

Tony Snow is a good, intelligent gentleman. Anyone who could put up with Helen Thomas, day after day must be. I wish I could say the same for the angry, immature ravings of the people on this web site. Mrs. Huffington must be proud that all you children have found a place to attack a man, suffering from cancer, and doing the same job for President Bush, that DD Myers did for President Clinton.

Now, to be fair, you should take the time to disect all that came out of the mouths of all the other news anchors and commentators, no matter what affiliate they are with, and you would come up with even worse. Tony Snow has always been fair and decent, and always remained a gentleman - even before this daily struggle to continue to live began.

You have a disturbing view of what is "fair and decent." Snow is a lying sack of crap, or he is termianlly stupid, which I do not believe. I agree that others have said stupid, dishonest things, but CNN hired Tony, so try to stay focused, K?

.
You are partly right.
Mr. Snow has good manners.
He is affable.
He is also a liar and a propagandist.
Just because he does not come off as a Sean Hannity-style bully does not mean that he is telling the truth or seeking the greater good for all people. Instead, he represents the narrow interests of greedy, destructive people.
But, yes, he does seem like a nice guy.

Tony Snow was yet another in a long line of bootlicking mouthpieces for a totally corrupt administration. Good manners be damned. Just because he wasn't bombastic in his lying and deception, doesn't mean he wasn't still lying and deceiving.

"ony Snow has always been fair and decent, and always remained a gentleman"

So are clinical sociopaths. Snowjob Tony remains a loyal servant of the Social Darwinist "neo-conservative" Bushevik administration and the vaunted "party of family values."

A con-man may be extremely polite, charming, and affable, but he remains a con-man intent upon fleecing you.

This truly demonstrates the current state of the Corporate Media in this country. That CNN would hire anyone associated with this failed, corrupt and criminal administration is outrageous, and one that's so clearly a spinmaster (paid liar) and not a journalist to provide political commentary demonstrates how far the media has drifted from it's duty to provide objective reporting and truthseeking. The "free press" in the US has been taken over by the corporate world and with Snow & Rove being hired as commentators we are tilting dangerously close to fascism. The media (especially TV) has transformed from the 4th Estate into 4 the State.

This is a freedom of speech thing, idiot. Tony Snow deserves to have a forum in which to express himself, and if it's a large forum and he gets paid a lot, then more power to him.

You seem to forget that he will have to sink or swim on his own at CNN. If people don't want to see or hear him expound, then viewership will go down for CNN. I never watched Glenn Beck. I just recently quit watching Wolf Blitzer because he wouldn't quit spinning stuff.

You can be outraged if you want to. I am just mildly amused. Just don't watch CNN. I watch David Gregory and Keith Olbermann.

Freedom of speech is nothing more than a (supposed) guranatee against the government passing laws that unduly inhibit a citizen's right to express him/herself. It has NOTHING to do with a private company hiring a news commentator. So watch the name-calling, becuase you are wrong. You are correct to some degree that if he is not wanted by CNN viewers, he won't last. However, he doesn't seem to be geting his own show, so the chance that his segments can be analzyed for viewership seems slim. Furthermore, the damage he can do before he'd get canned is not worth it. The marketplace of ideas need not tolerate junk. And tha's just what this spinmeister has delivered time and time again. The casual acceptance (or even worse, wrong-headed endoresment) of lies, deception, half-truths, and misrepresentations as being part of "free speech" is precisely the problem. Facts ought to be presented. Opinions ought to be based on fatcs. In either case (news or "commentary") there is no valid reason to accomdate or even tolerate lies. Rational people can disagree on the implications of facts, but if I base my opinions on bogus information, I am certainly NOT "entitled" to my point of view. And neither is Tony Snow, at least not when he is lying.

Wow. I knew I didn't trust anything Snow said, but, FUCK, I didn't realize he was such a goddam liar. In some ways, CNN is even worse than Fox. At least you always knew you were being hand-fed neocon propaganda from Fox News. These days CNN is more interested in "framing" the news than reporting it.

Who still believes FNC, CNN and MSNBC are "news outlets"? Its entertainment. (Good or bad is a matter of taste.)

By the way so are The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Using video clips from either of these shows in an attempt to make a "serious" point against a particular pundit is hilarious to me.

What is really painful is the thought that all it would take for these shows to disappear into oblivion, would be for people to stop watching them.

Its too bad that CNN has fallen so low that then are desperate enough to both copy the Fox Noise playbook and hire the president's and fox's sloppy seconds. Here is a guy that took great delight in lying to the American people and defending illegal acts. What was the line from the movie Heavy Metal? He's nothing but a low-down, double-dealing, backstabbing, larcenous perverted worm! Hanging's too good for him. Burning's too good for him! He should be torn into little bitsy pieces and buried alive!

Like most of the members of this administration, I look forward to pissing on their graves.

Reason# 21 ------- This slimeballs' character assasination of Princess Di , at the very moment she lay dying on her deathbed. Yes , thats a true story ---- he was at Faux at the time and while flipping channels trying to get the info , I witnessed this low-life degenerate trashing Di , just as he was used to doing to anybody that the Rethugs targetted.

This piece of crap deserves only one thing --- a long stech in Leavenworth for his part in the crimes of Bushco. CNN should be ashamed , not bousterous , about taking on this "baggage" (I for one , will be boycyotting CNN and their sponsors , entirely).

What sometime irritates me the most is that among reporters and commentators from the MSM, frauds like Tony Snow and Britt Hume are treated as respected and legitimate news reporters/analysts. Neither one has ever uttered and unbiased phrase in their life.

Mack20 is a rightwing fascist with an infantile mentality. He labels himself after an automatic weapon because he is so insecure about his masculinity. He argues that dissent is "traitorous" or "communistic." Any more such comments and he might have to be included in the war crimes trials of the Bushies. No, then he would feel as a hero. I have news for you, Mack20, the Bush administration is a huge failure. Everyone is aware of it, but you and a few other kool-aide drinkers.

I am flattered you took the time to trash me without responding directly to one of my comments. Jason probably feels slighted. Not suprisingly you"re totally incorrect with the label "fascists" given me. Only a true fascist could define him/herself:

Mussolini defined fascism as being a collectivistic ideology in opposition to socialism, classical liberalism, democracy and individualism.

If you look up "classical liberalism" you"ll learn it"s more akin to modern conservatisim. Please correct me if I"m wrong with the following: Today"s modern, progressive liberal rejects individualism and self determination and believes a strong central government will provide the average citizen the basic needs of life. They also destest private industry and feel major markets should be controlled or even OWNED by the Federal Government. Examples such as the healthcare industry and energy companies are takeover targets by the left. Hitler and Mussolini nationalized most of the major industries in their countries. So, it seems to me you and your lefty pals are much more like the mid-20th century fascist.

Secondly, I couldn"t find any connection to my blog handle and some kind of firearm. I did search and find a jewlers digital scale and a touch-up paint brush used by body shops both called a mack 20. So¦ are you ignorant or just a complete liar trying to discredit me? Likely the latter. Remember " liberal = character flaw. On display daily at the HuffPost.

"Hitler and Mussolini nationalized most of the major industries in their countries. "

Only to abolish the trade unions and roll back workers' rights and privileges, all to the benefit of the corporate owners (ie., Krupps, Bertlsmann, ad nauseum).

Nationalization of industry under Mussolini and Hitler was not the same as nationalization under the Third Republic (France) or the late, unlamented USSR.

"Remember " liberal = character flaw. On display daily at the HuffPost."

Mack, IMHO the only character flaw in the room is your slavish devotion to the morally bankrupt Social Darwinism repackaged as "neo-conservatism." That someone mistook your handle as a reference to the Ingram MAC 10 sub machine gun (essentially an assassin's weapon BTW), is simply that; an error, no doubt a reaction to your tireless defense of Snowjob Tony and the Bushevik record of criminality, cronyism, pathological dishonesty, institutionalized incompetence, and irredeemable moral bankruptcy.

I must now ask, Tony, is that you behind Mack20?
