NEW ORLEANS — Republican Sen. John McCain, campaigning through poverty-stricken cities and towns, said Wednesday he opposes a Senate bill that seeks equal pay for women because it would lead to more lawsuits.

Senate Republicans killed the bill Wednesday night on a 56-42 vote that denied the measure the 60 votes needed to advance it to full debate and a vote. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had delayed the vote to give McCain's Democratic rivals, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, time to return to Washington to support the measure, which would make it easier for women to sue their employers for pay discrimination.

McCain skipped the vote to campaign in New Orleans.

"I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what's being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems," the expected GOP presidential nominee told reporters. "This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system."

The bill sought to counteract a Supreme Court decision limiting how long workers can wait before suing for pay discrimination.

It is named for Lilly Ledbetter, a supervisor at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s plant in Gadsden, Ala., who sued for pay discrimination just before retiring after a 19-year career there. By the time she retired, Ledbetter made $6,500 less than the lowest-paid male supervisor and claimed earlier decisions by supervisors kept her from making more.

The Supreme Court voted 5-4 last year to throw out her complaint, saying she had waited too long to sue.

Democrats criticized McCain for opposing the bill.

"Senator McCain has yet again fallen in line with President Bush while middle-class families are falling by the wayside," Clinton said in a statement following the vote. "Women are earning less, but Senator McCain is offering more of the same."

Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Karen Finney said: "At a time when American families are struggling to keep their homes and jobs while paying more for everything from gasoline to groceries, how on Earth would anyone who thinks they can lead our country also think it's acceptable to oppose equal pay for America's mothers, wives and daughters?"

McCain stated his opposition to the bill as he campaigned in rural eastern Kentucky, where poverty is worse among women than men. The Arizona senator said he was familiar with the disparity but that there are better ways to help women find better paying jobs.

"They need the education and training, particularly since more and more women are heads of their households, as much or more than anybody else," McCain said. "And it's hard for them to leave their families when they don't have somebody to take care of them.

"It's a vicious cycle that's affecting women, particularly in a part of the country like this, where mining is the mainstay; traditionally, women have not gone into that line of work, to say the least," he said.

McCain chose to visit the tiny hamlet of Inez, Ky., because it is where President Lyndon B. Johnson declared war on poverty. But McCain said Johnson's poverty programs had failed.

"I wouldn't be back here today if government had fulfilled the promise that Lyndon Johnson made 44 years ago," he said.

In recent weeks, McCain has proposed a series of tax breaks for corporations, doubling the dependent child tax exemption, government-backed refinancing for struggling homeowners and a summer holiday from gas taxes. He proposed another new program Wednesday: a tax write-off for companies that provide high-speed Internet access for underserved, low-income communities.

I'm glad the Republicans are here to keep the government from meddling in the private sector--like massive taxpayer-funded government bailouts and subsidies.
As for his opposition to the bill--Who's your daddy, girls?

I know, I know. They're bailing out their privatized student loan debacle.

No one saw that coming. Millions of 18 year olds will default on jumbo loans that aren't securitized?

Get outta here. NEVER HAPPEN.

They're going to have to repo a lot of Ipods to cover that mess.

WTF?

This isn't about suing the company for not paying her the same as a man doing a more highly skilled job than her.

Equal pay means paying her what a man receives for doing THE SAME JOB as her. If she needed more education and training why did the company give her the SAME JOB the man has to begin with?

More 'straight talk'? Yeah, straight out of his ass.

If a lawsuit is justified, I say go for it! If not, maybe McCain can use some of that money he borrowed to keep his campaign afloat to start a scholarship program for women to become lawyers to fight these unjustified lawsuits. Maybe those jobs can make up for all the jobs lost the last few years.

McCain show his anti-American GOP tru colors: Never side with the little guy (in this case gal), but with big business.

I have always been amazed at how republicans snare Americans to vote against themselves with the "too many lawsuits" spin. "Too many lawsuits"???

"Too many lawsuits" is repub-speak for "We want to deny people the right to seek justice when they are wronged by us."

Sure, it can never "happen to you", but people never understand until they are wronged and find they can't seek justice. You can then bow down and thank the GOP.

"Katie bar the door! Those pesky individuals citizens want redress!"

It's so COSTLY and MESSY and who knows where it may lead if we let regular people in, all that bitching and whining.....

Federal courts are for learned judges and corporate counsel, and contract disputes.

John Sidney McCain was born into privilege. Both his grandfather and father were admirals, which is a fancy title to put on the stationery. But the money came from his father's choice in a wife, because mommy was an oil heiress, and that's the real source of Sidney's privileged life. He graduated almost at the very bottom of the class from the Naval Academy, then went into the service and married a model. Which reflects his first view of women, that they are decorations.

The model had a bad accident, so Sidney divorced her and did just like Dad did: he married an heiress too, this one getting her money out of beer.

So Sidney thinks of women as (1) good sources for money, and (2) decorations.

Any wonder he would make a comment as stupid as the one quoted above? The women in his life didn't need either education or training -- they were just born rich or pretty, and it worked for them. If he'd been alive during the civil war, he would have voted against a law to free the slaves because it just might "lead to more lawsuits." What a hateful and ignorant person Sidney is.

How 'bout as a deterent, companies would do the right thing with pay equity, if they knew there was a possiblity they could be sued? McCain a rightwing jackass. If corporations could be counted on to do the right thing, wouldn't see the problems we're seeing now in the following industries: airline, meat, mortgage lending, oil, and I could go on.
All big coporations care about is the bottom, and when they are given the opportunity to be socially responsible, they often fail. Reagan had empowerment zones, where corps. were given tax breaks to develop in low-income areas. So what did most of them do, they made some small token effort, and then they sold off the tax breaks-fuck -em.

McCain is a jerk! Is this the type of person that Americans want to lead their country? The republicans should be ashamed for having nominated such a creep. Do republicans really hate their women so much that they are so willing to support someone who does not believe in equality in employment for their daughters and wives?
Not only does McCain not get it about the economy he is happy to have women struggle even more than men. God help single mothers because McCain's dumb ass plans for addressing the economy and McCain's inability to understand the impact of discrimination in employment is going to really hurt women financially.
McCain standing in front of a closed factory touting free trade and his stupid trickle down economics are abhorrent. Yea republicans what a pathetic nominee you all have selected.

Now, he's ancient, and it's FINALLY his turn, and "W" poisoned the well, that rascal.

Does McCain's argument seem a little stupid?

Let's see, two people doing the same work should get the same pay. Isn't that common sense?

And if the law says employers must pay people doing the same job equal pay and there are lawsuits, doesn't that mean people are not getting paid equally for equal work and isn't that is a BAD thing?

Avoiding lawsuits is more important than equal pay for equal work?

Women need more education and training? Huh? Has he seen the statistics at universities, graduate schools, medical and law schools? Women are entering/ graduating at equal or at greater numbers then men. He really needs to wake up to the America of today and now.

Leave it to Huffington to post a picture of McCain with Hillary. How shady!

I am one of those that said I would vote for McCain if Obama was the nominee. I take that back, but I won't give my vote to Obama.

I'll sit this one out.

I've heard this but I do not understand. Is it a dislike for Obama's what?

I've always like Hillary but lately I am surprised by some of her words...the latest "if you count as I do". Well, I've always wanted to count the people and not the delgates. But I finally settled with the delegates as the measure by which we choose...and there are other things Hillary says that sounds like something a child tells their mother. But even with that I would have to vote for her if she wins (by some miracle).

So, Why not vote for Obama if the nominee?

Parliamentary move. You can never look at the vote of the Majority or Minority Leader until the vote is for final passage.

In order to bring an issue back up for another vote, they must vote against the preliminary version of the bill.

Only someone who has voted against can enter a motion to bring something back up for consideration.

Contact your local chapter of The League of Women Voters. They have excellent outreach programs.

So is McCain saying that a woman like myself that had earned a college degree with a dual major, was working on a masters degree, while running the largest psychiatric unit on a residential treatment centers campus successfully, needed more education and training?

Is McCain saying that my male co-worker, who did not have a college education, lied that he did have a college degree on his application, and ran a smaller unit than mine did not need more education and training? And that his earning almost $10,000.00 more than me a year, when I had excellent evaluations was justified?

I've got news for you Senator McCain, my situation and many other women's issues with equal pay have absolutely nothing to do with education and training, but it does have everything to do with the lack of equality.

Senator McCain the issue of women earning equal pay is about educated and/or trained women equal to that of a male co-worker and sometimes more, doing just as much and or better than her male co-worker and continuing to be paid less, for no other reason than the fact than gender.

Here's a theory: I have a hunch women (in general) tend to be less prone to asking for, and demanding, raises when they are deserved. Women tend to be more 'loyal' to their employers and less likely to leave due to unfair compensation or unsatisfactory working conditions. Men are far more likely to be challenging and demanding regarding their pay, and are far more likely to take the risk and get another job when their demands aren't met. I suppose men are willing to 'risk' an okay job for a better one, whereas women are more cautious and tend to 'play it safe' and feel an obligation to stay at a company.

Maybe this is politically incorrect or whatever - but when I tell some of my female friends this idea the lightbulb goes off in their head and they realize it is true.
