NEW ORLEANS — Republican Sen. John McCain, campaigning through poverty-stricken cities and towns, said Wednesday he opposes a Senate bill that seeks equal pay for women because it would lead to more lawsuits.

Senate Republicans killed the bill Wednesday night on a 56-42 vote that denied the measure the 60 votes needed to advance it to full debate and a vote. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had delayed the vote to give McCain's Democratic rivals, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, time to return to Washington to support the measure, which would make it easier for women to sue their employers for pay discrimination.

McCain skipped the vote to campaign in New Orleans.

"I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what's being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems," the expected GOP presidential nominee told reporters. "This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system."

The bill sought to counteract a Supreme Court decision limiting how long workers can wait before suing for pay discrimination.

It is named for Lilly Ledbetter, a supervisor at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s plant in Gadsden, Ala., who sued for pay discrimination just before retiring after a 19-year career there. By the time she retired, Ledbetter made $6,500 less than the lowest-paid male supervisor and claimed earlier decisions by supervisors kept her from making more.

The Supreme Court voted 5-4 last year to throw out her complaint, saying she had waited too long to sue.

Democrats criticized McCain for opposing the bill.

Story continues below

"Senator McCain has yet again fallen in line with President Bush while middle-class families are falling by the wayside," Clinton said in a statement following the vote. "Women are earning less, but Senator McCain is offering more of the same."

Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Karen Finney said: "At a time when American families are struggling to keep their homes and jobs while paying more for everything from gasoline to groceries, how on Earth would anyone who thinks they can lead our country also think it's acceptable to oppose equal pay for America's mothers, wives and daughters?"

McCain stated his opposition to the bill as he campaigned in rural eastern Kentucky, where poverty is worse among women than men. The Arizona senator said he was familiar with the disparity but that there are better ways to help women find better paying jobs.

"They need the education and training, particularly since more and more women are heads of their households, as much or more than anybody else," McCain said. "And it's hard for them to leave their families when they don't have somebody to take care of them.

"It's a vicious cycle that's affecting women, particularly in a part of the country like this, where mining is the mainstay; traditionally, women have not gone into that line of work, to say the least," he said.

McCain chose to visit the tiny hamlet of Inez, Ky., because it is where President Lyndon B. Johnson declared war on poverty. But McCain said Johnson's poverty programs had failed.

"I wouldn't be back here today if government had fulfilled the promise that Lyndon Johnson made 44 years ago," he said.

In recent weeks, McCain has proposed a series of tax breaks for corporations, doubling the dependent child tax exemption, government-backed refinancing for struggling homeowners and a summer holiday from gas taxes. He proposed another new program Wednesday: a tax write-off for companies that provide high-speed Internet access for underserved, low-income communities.

Nice photo of Hillary with John McCain. Another good reason to elect a woman to lead the Democratic ticket.

BTW - Do you happen to have a photo of Barack with the mayor of San Francisco?

McCain is such an idiot!

With so many of Hillary's old racist white "feminists" threatening to vote for McCain if Obama loses, why is old man McCain losing a sure thing?

He should be paying lip service to old white feminists right now.

The picture appears to have been taken on the McCain-Clinton Co-Del in which they sought to convince colleagues of the realities of global warming.

We need some Obama supporters in NORTH CAROLINA NOW FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS. Hillary is already down there. I am not taking anything for granted. We need volunteers to move Obama voters to vote now, there is early voting in North Carolina. We need to hit the rural areas and get people registered to vote now. We also need volunteers on college campuses to get out the youth vote. We need volunteers who can also be there on primary day may 6th to get out the vote for Obama, knock on doors, inform voters that they can register and vote on the same day, inform them of what ID TO TAKE WITH THEM. lets do it now ,right now. lets get to work. Also remember Indiana too.

Here in NE Ohio, I wrote a text amendment to a local zoning resolution and campaigned for placing township home rule on the ballot, which allows voter-initiated petitions in an Ohio township for issues besides Home Rule. I created the petitions for that purpose. The local Board of Elections said that I could attach new voter registration cards for signers of the petition on the petition pages for people who weren't registered at the time they signed, and that would make their signatures valid. However, in an election, people are supposed to register at least 30 days before Election Day. I don't know what the law is in North Carolina and I wonder if there's enough time before Election Day there to register anyone new? In any case, I hope that most of the people who are registered will see the rare and wonderful opportunity for change and good judgement that we have in Barack Obama and that they come out to vote for him in unprecedented numbers. He should be our next president and I hope he will be, and I hope that he navigates all the half-truth hazards, and answers effectively the falsely patriotic pundits and other manipulators out there are right now.
As for my initiative, there was such disinformation broadcast by a machine loyal to the existing trustees, who were all against it, that the issue was defeated. I hope people aren't fooled this time for those who want to keep the status quo.

North Carolina voting laws allows a person to register to vote and vote on the same day. So persons who are not registered on primary day can register and then go to their voting precincts and vote. But I would encourage people not to wait until primary day,go vote now,North Carolina has early voting, many have already voted. Obama supporters needs to get down there now, right now. Bill Clinton is there telling people to go over to the courthouse and vote. Lets get Obama volunteers in North Carolina now, now, now. Dont get complacent over Senator Obama's big lead,we have to sustain it. Remember North Carolina also has open primary,so Republicans can also vote in the Democratic Primary. So thats why we need you,Obama supporters. If you live in NY,PENN,MD,VA.SC,GA, you are within hours by car from North Carolina, Their are also low budget motels all over,$35 TO $60 per day. The people are very friendly ,they are not hyper and high strung. You will be welcomed. ITS like going back in time. Lets go,go,go,now.right now.

[["They need the education and training, particularly since more and more women are heads of their households, as much or more than anybody else," McCain said. "And it's hard for them to leave their families when they don't have somebody to take care of them."]]

Translation: "These silly woman should stop trying to work outside their home. In my day they stayed in the kitchen where they belonged!"

This is a guy who grew up in a different age, then he went to war became involuntarily isolated from society only to come back and find everything was different in regards to women and the notion of work. He just wants everything to be back the way he remembers it. Ah, the good old days...

Are you clueless? Just because someone comes on a blog and says they are a feminist does not make it true. Just because someone says they will vote for McCain does not make it true. Get real.

It's still 1942 in McCain's brain. Is he really serious about comparing mining jobs to corporate jobs? Senility has settled in his grayed nest.

OK Johny Boy JERK!
How about tax breaks for "low income "USERS" of high speed Internet in underserved rural areas?
How about tax breaks or a high bar, for self employment tax..
If I try to add to my income (SS) by free lancing, I have to pay a self employment tax on ONE JOB?
In my viewpoint 1 job is NOT RUNNING A BUSINESS!
20 jobs a year? Yes A business. Not so likely anymore I am competing with the K-12 set who have NO TRAINING, are NOT PROFESSIONALS, But the current "adult deciders" think it is just wonderful that the kids can "express themselves!"

If this weren't so pathetic, it would be funny.

We go from a "Village Idiot" to a "Village Idiot" who is also a "knuckle-scraping caveman" (no insult to cavemen intended).

This is best the Republican party has to offer.

PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!

McMaverick is such an out of touch old man that he was pontificating about a non-existent bill. The Ledbetter bill would protect women for equal pay for the EXACT SAME job as a man. It has nothing to do with education levels, training or the GOP's bogeyman...trial lawyers. McMaverick can't defend not paying a female tire store supervisor the same as her male counterpart so he changes the subject and makes up crap. If he had pulled out his time at the Hanoi Hilton, then we really know he got concerned about his position.

And McMaverick throws out that in KY women still don't take mining jobs...wonder why? How many women are sexually harrassed in those types of professions? Would McMaverick support anti-harrassment claims to make those jobs more palatable? Do you really need more education or training to put yourself in a mine shaft and risk your life because of gutted mine safety laws at the hands of the mine industry controlled GOP?

Ok, so he's alienated Catholics, African Americans, Women, and anybody who has a small understanding of economics should understand he is slapping the poor in the face. Now if he could just alienate the press maybe they would start reporting all this and we wouldn't have to worry about having him for our president.

McCain is a true chauvanistic, republican male at heart, don't let this moderate garbage, everyone keeps spouting about him, fool you! Any man who can call his wife a trallop, and a cu*t, (and worst yet, do it infront of reporters) doesn't respect women much. And this old man, who should have known better, had no problem demeaning Chelsea Clinton, and Janet Reno, on the basis of their looks at a Republican fundraiser. McCain is no modern man, nor does he seemed interested in becoming one. He is a male chauvanist at his core.

I don't think he can alienate the US press and it's obvious. The press is beholden to the corporate moguls who own or support them. McCain is also beholden to those corporations and by extension gets a pass by the press. Hillary, by contrast, gets mangled by the press.

When I read the words, "I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this ...... opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems," I hear, "Yep, we've sure screwed women left & right for years, but no way we'll hold employers responsible for doing it."

Oh, yeah, that's who US citizens need looking out for their interests for the next 4-8 years.

I guess that with "more education and training", women will be too smart to understand that they are being underpaid and that it isn't fair.

Another moment of sound reasoning from Madman McCain
