Watch the video of Friedman getting a pie in the face here.

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman was attacked with pies in the face by environmental activists during a speech about energy at Brown University yesterday.

The Providence Journal reports that Friedman's message — that responding to climate change will make America "stronger, more innovative, [and] more energy secure" — was greeted by protesters:

Not everyone agrees with Friedman's vision that innovation is the path to climate and energy salvation. Just seconds into his speech, he was interrupted by two environmental activists, who stormed the stage shortly after Friedman stepped up to the microphone, tossing two paper plates loaded with shamrock-colored whipped cream at him.

Friedman ducked, and was left with only minor streams of the sugary green goo on his black pants and turtleneck.

He stood in bewilderment and mild disgust as the young man and woman bolted from the stage and out the side door, throwing a handful of fliers into the air to relay the message they apparently were not going to deliver personally.

"Thomas Friedman deserves a pie in the face...," the flier said, "because of his sickeningly cheery applaud for free market capitalism's conquest of the planet, for telling the world that the free market and techno fixes can save us from climate change. From carbon trading to biofuels, these distractions are dangerous in and of themselves, while encouraging inaction with respect to the true problems at hand..."

After five minutes, Friedman returned to the stage undeterred, with only faint traces of the green cream on his clothing.

The Brown Daily Herald reports that the students involved have been apprehended but charges are not likely to be brought against them:

After the pie hit Friedman and splattered on his face and torso, the two jumped offstage and ran out of the southeast exit of the building, followed closely by a man trying to catch them. A police officer also ran toward the exit but stayed inside.

The thrower was eventually caught by police, who detained her in Salomon's lobby before moving her elsewhere.

"One of the offenders was apprehended, placed in the custody of the Brown Department of Public Safety and identified as a Brown student," University spokesman Michael Chapman said in a statement released Tuesday night. "The University will review this incident through its non-academic disciplinary system to determine the appropriate response."

DPS Lt. Rick Lombardi told The Herald that no party wishes to press charges. Lombardi would not confirm the student's identity.

Pictures, hopefully, to come...

WILL YOU THROW PIES AT AHMEDINIJAD OR KIM JONG IL SILLY PACIFISTS? AT CHINA? WILL YOU SCREAM AND CRY IF OBAMA DOESN'T? DON'T KNOW, BUT I'M SURE YOU'LL RUN AWAY LIKE THIS GUTLESS COWARD

Pedro--please turn off the caps--can get your point across without them. And btw, these were college kids, not diplomats

No use telling these folks to turn off CAPS -- they know that they've made their point, because you actually read his points and made a comment.

Best is to ignore them, especially if they make silly comments. Just fart in their general direction. Then they'll get a whiff of your feelings.

Your comment says a lot about you, pedro. It says nothing of significance about the pie-throwers.

And I suppose you think a respectful diplomatic resolution is a satellite guided missile? And what exactly will you do as all of the production of goods that we consume is moved to the very same China that you deride in your above comments and the US becomes a service industry consumer farm for multinationals? Pretty soon the only objects that will say "made in America" will fire deadly projectiles or drop cluster bombs. And yes, I am an old school protectionist and believe in tariffs...because I believe that our citizenry are entitled to a good life and the fruits of their labor. And I don't mean just 1% of the citizenry profiting off the fruits of slave labor goods that you buy at the mall.

If you're going to be throwing pies in the faces of notable people at public events, then you're going to need practice. And don't even bother trying a pie assault if you're not willing to get close enough to your target to risk apprehension. These were obviously amateurs.

Honestly, does the left have a list of childish punishments depending on the infraction?

Wedgies? Noogies?

Throwing a pie is an admission that you've got absolutely no real argument for what you believe in. It's a tantrum.

The only thing lamer than actually throwing a pie at someone is posting your indignant approval at HuffPo.

But these college students were behaving like Republicans. They were engaging in Bush-style "preemptive war," without offering negotiations.

Good.
Friedman was a cheerleader for Bush's Iraq war.
The scumbag should donate his speaking fees to veterans' groups.

"Friedman was a cheerleader for Bush's Iraq war. "

Total nonsense. Friedman stated over and over that it was the wrong response to what he agreed was a real problem brewing in the Arab world.

What he did do is say things like "If we're going to do this incredibly stupid thing, perhaps it can be done correctly and end with a positive result."

He was wrong, of course, and should have known better at the time. But to say that he was a cheerleader for something that he so clearly opposed is silly, wrong and somewhat slanderous.

How about this? No cheerleading here, right?

From the Charlie Rose show:
-------------------------------
I think it [the invasion of Iraq] was unquestionably worth doing, Charlie.
.

We needed to go over there, basically, um, and um, uh, take out a very big state right in the heart of that world and burst that bubble, and there was only one way to do it.
.

What they needed to see was American boys and girls going house to house, from Basra to Baghdad, um and basically saying, Which part of this sentence don't you understand? "

You don't think, you know, we care about our open society, you think this bubble fantasy, we're just gonna to let it grow?

Well, Suck. On. This.

Okay.

That Charlie was what this war was about. We could've hit Saudi Arabia, it was part of that bubble. We coulda hit Pakistan. We hit Iraq because we could.

Friedman may deserve a pie in the face for his stance on the Iraq war, but I am not sure he does for his stance on climate change.

Could you please provide a link that shows that Friedman is for ethnic cleansing or that he favors Israeli over US policy? I've read a lot of his stuff, and he has always seemed fairly balanced. In fact, most hard-line right wing Israelis consider him anti-semitic. So naturally, I'm wondering what your sources are. Thanks.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:51 PM on 04/23/2008

I don't have a link for it but when I reading his last book he was discussing the conflict in Israel and he talked about mistakes both sides have made which was fair and then all of a sudden he said that if the fighting continued and there wasn't a peace agreement then all the Arabs living in the occupied territories would have to be "transfered" to Jordan and I remember that because after reading it I thought "wait - did he really just say what I think he did or did I imagine it?" and then I went back and read it again to make sure. I might still have the book but it would be impossible for me to find that without reading the entire book again.

Most American Jews try very hard to sound fair and "balanced" but occasionally they will mess up and reveal how they really feel. And I'm not saying Arabs haven't made mistakes or done bad things but even in the "liberal" city that I live in there are many Jews saying things that anyone else would realize is racist.

Maybe it's just me, but what you just said sounded a little racist to me.
As far as Friedman and Israel goes, I think he's for a two state solution. I think he's against the settlement building. And he certainly has spoken out on more than one occassion against Israeli policy and actions. Yes, some people have stupidly suggested transferring the Palestinians in the territories to Jordan, but I don't think Friedman has ever advocated such a thing. In light of the fact that you don't have a quote, I think you're jumping to a wrong conclusion and accusing someone of advocating ethnic cleansing who doesn't. It could make a person wonder whose character we should be questioning here.

Funny, I read from another source that he ducked the pies. We shall see which source is correct (any bets?).
At any rate, I suppose with our current administration, a pie in the face is considered a talking point. And Bush has already taught us that attacking is better than listening. Those kids are quite presidential, aren't they?

Friedman has done so many disservices to his (unfortunately) vast readership that it is difficult to know where to start. Most of all, I fault him with helping to further the momentum in the run-up to the war in Iraq as well as his continued, unrelenting advocacy of all things Israeli to the detriment of --well, of course, the Palestinians, Jordanians, Lebanese, Egyptians et al--but ALSO to the detriment of all things AMERICAN! We have had more than 50 yrs. of messes with NOTHING OF VALUE to show for all the American tax dollars poured into creating & maintaining a fascist, exclusivist religious state called "Israel." Contrary to our American values, I might add!

So you're saying ethnic cleansing is a bad thing?

So these two were opposed to new ideas and innovation. Good thing someone like Jonah Salk was not up on the stage. There would have been a anvil inside that pie

People who advocate imperialism, murder and mayhem then call it installing democracy should not be treated so rudely. But they need to be careful when they leave their bubble, as GW Bush and Cheney well know.
