Watch the video of Friedman getting a pie in the face here.

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman was attacked with pies in the face by environmental activists during a speech about energy at Brown University yesterday.

The Providence Journal reports that Friedman's message — that responding to climate change will make America "stronger, more innovative, [and] more energy secure" — was greeted by protesters:

Not everyone agrees with Friedman's vision that innovation is the path to climate and energy salvation. Just seconds into his speech, he was interrupted by two environmental activists, who stormed the stage shortly after Friedman stepped up to the microphone, tossing two paper plates loaded with shamrock-colored whipped cream at him.

Friedman ducked, and was left with only minor streams of the sugary green goo on his black pants and turtleneck.

He stood in bewilderment and mild disgust as the young man and woman bolted from the stage and out the side door, throwing a handful of fliers into the air to relay the message they apparently were not going to deliver personally.

"Thomas Friedman deserves a pie in the face...," the flier said, "because of his sickeningly cheery applaud for free market capitalism's conquest of the planet, for telling the world that the free market and techno fixes can save us from climate change. From carbon trading to biofuels, these distractions are dangerous in and of themselves, while encouraging inaction with respect to the true problems at hand..."

After five minutes, Friedman returned to the stage undeterred, with only faint traces of the green cream on his clothing.

The Brown Daily Herald reports that the students involved have been apprehended but charges are not likely to be brought against them:

After the pie hit Friedman and splattered on his face and torso, the two jumped offstage and ran out of the southeast exit of the building, followed closely by a man trying to catch them. A police officer also ran toward the exit but stayed inside.

The thrower was eventually caught by police, who detained her in Salomon's lobby before moving her elsewhere.

"One of the offenders was apprehended, placed in the custody of the Brown Department of Public Safety and identified as a Brown student," University spokesman Michael Chapman said in a statement released Tuesday night. "The University will review this incident through its non-academic disciplinary system to determine the appropriate response."

DPS Lt. Rick Lombardi told The Herald that no party wishes to press charges. Lombardi would not confirm the student's identity.

Pictures, hopefully, to come...

What is it with all the HuffPo exaggeration? Headlines say Friedman was hit in face with pies. The lead says Friedman was hit in the face with pies. Reading the actual article, Friedman was NOT hit in face with pies, though he did get his clothes dirty. How about sticking with the facts and leaving the hyperbole to others? What else are you stretching the truth about???

You come to the Huffington Post and expect objective headlines? Good luck! When you find one give me a call.

How about "Friedman Suit Soiled in Eco-Attack by Cream Team at Brown".

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:39 PM on 04/25/2008

I got really excited when I read this headline.

And then, disappointingly, I realized it was Krugman I had hoped got the 'pie pitch' high and tight. Both clowns hammer their dribble for what used to be a great op-ed page at the Times. Only Dowd and Rich and Kristof make it remotely readable these days.

I'm not very impressed with Dowd lately. She seems to have some issues with women although she probably isn't even aware of it. She insulted Gore for not being enough of a "man" the way Bush was, she insults Clinton for crying but never mentioned it when Kerry did it, she tries way too hard to play the role of the sardonic smart woman and he writing just seems...mean mostly.

Dowd and Kristol are a couple of puke pies.

So this is what the people of HuffPo are reduced to...

after 8 years of a president that was basically able to do whatever he wanted despite their protests and calls for impeachment...which were basically treated like an annoying gnat on a summer day...

they applaud pie throwing.

I'm enjoying this immensely.

Those hippies should be charged with ASAULT with INTENT and being members of a pro-communist organisation.

When are we going to have LOYALTY OATHS again.

I just want to be SAFE.

Just because these friends of the earth defend our environment and make points with non-violent pie throwing, it doesn’t mean they are “pro-communist”.

By the way, your plea for “loyalty oaths” harkens back to those fun filled days when the fascists were running Germany and killing Jews, gays and artists. Nice touch. You’re probably a supporter of king george jr and the jr dick no doubt. You certainly display the necessary ignorance required for attendance in the republiCON regime.

I’m sure you do want to be safe. Safe from ideas and dissent. You should probably move to N Korea. They have “loyalty oaths” there. You’ll feel right at home, and we in America would feel much safer with you THERE.

You should learn to spell "ASAULT", maybe a communist education is exactly what you need.

And if you want to be 'SAFE' crawl back into your mommys' womb.

Well that's exactly true whether you believe in anthrogogenic gw or don't but are still concerned about pollution and waste. But Brown kids, if you are reading this, you got a tough, tough way to go. Just look at this thread, not one comment acknowledging your truth, but a plethora of reflexive anti-semitic comments.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:57 PM on 04/23/2008

I'm Jewish and I haven't seen anything anti-semitic here. Some people are exaggerating by claiming that Friedman enjoys killing Arabs but the reality is he has said some very offensive things and he seems to care more about protecting Israel than violating the human rights of Arabs. If someone says those things they better be prepared for people to be angry about it.

You can call people anti-semitic because you don't like their opinions but all that does is make people think Jews will call anything anti-semitic and so it must not exist. When people in France vandalize Jewish cemetaries or kidnap, toture and kill a man just because he is Jewish or when Nazis made Jews wear a yellow star or tell people they can't shop at Jewish businesses then that is anti-semitism. This is not anti-semitism so stop exaggerating.

Nothing wrong with pie throwing.

I just read the article again - it wasn't a pie actually. It was just green whipped cream on a plate. Now that is just wrong.

Don't these spoiled brats even know how to cook? They couldn't go to a market and actually buy a pie?

Tradionally, whipped cream is the pie thrower's favorite, they call it a pie because it looks like a pie. Why waste a pie on Friedman?

Americans where are your balls? You storm the stage to try and hit him with a pie? Storm the stage with hockey sticks and break his legs. Then use a thumb tack to pin the flier on his forehead.

When are conservatives going to stop blowing up abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood offices? Am I painting with a broad brush? To say that these 2 people that threw a pie at Frieman is representative of millions is just as idiotic, as my asking when conservatives are going to stop bombing abortion clinics. To think that the actions of a few members of a group, is representative of everyone in that group is stupid.

I can't speak for others commenting here but for myself what I find most troublesome is the near unanimous support and praise here and at other sites for the two who actually did it .

I also disagree with your logic that b/c the conservatives do something far worse that the Libs should have carte blanche short of literally using bombs to blow their opponents up.

I consider the comment totally devoid of anything other than hatred and venom with a large helping of anti semitism. No saving grace in that little rant.

So, if I click "Flag as abusive" what does it accomplish and where would it appear?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I don't believe in censurship for any reason - if something makes you uncomfortable then respond and explain why or better yet don't give them more attention because that is what they want.

The reason that person said that is because Friedman believes that Jews can do anything to protect Israel and the people in the world who have ever been victims are Jews and so they are allowed to treat other humans like garbage as long as they get what they want. He supports "transfering" Arabs to Jordan and he supported the war in Iraq because Israel wants to do something about Iran and some people believe Iraq was a way to get our military there so can eventually attack Iran although both Iran and Iraq have ever been a threat to this country. Many American Jews feel this way but it's the dirty little secret that we never supposed to talk about and if anyone does then they're accused of being anti-semitic which is what you're doing now.

Of course Friedman doesn't enjoy killing Arabs - they only said that because they don't know another way to make their point but I don't consider it anti-semitic.
