Thomas Friedman Gets A Pie In The Face During Speech At Brown

Watch the video of Friedman getting a pie in the face here.

New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman was attacked with pies in the face by environmental activists during a speech about energy at Brown University yesterday.

The Providence Journal reports that Friedman's message — that responding to climate change will make America "stronger, more innovative, [and] more energy secure" — was greeted by protesters:

Not everyone agrees with Friedman's vision that innovation is the path to climate and energy salvation. Just seconds into his speech, he was interrupted by two environmental activists, who stormed the stage shortly after Friedman stepped up to the microphone, tossing two paper plates loaded with shamrock-colored whipped cream at him.

Friedman ducked, and was left with only minor streams of the sugary green goo on his black pants and turtleneck.

He stood in bewilderment and mild disgust as the young man and woman bolted from the stage and out the side door, throwing a handful of fliers into the air to relay the message they apparently were not going to deliver personally.

"Thomas Friedman deserves a pie in the face...," the flier said, "because of his sickeningly cheery applaud for free market capitalism's conquest of the planet, for telling the world that the free market and techno fixes can save us from climate change. From carbon trading to biofuels, these distractions are dangerous in and of themselves, while encouraging inaction with respect to the true problems at hand..."

After five minutes, Friedman returned to the stage undeterred, with only faint traces of the green cream on his clothing.

The Brown Daily Herald reports that the students involved have been apprehended but charges are not likely to be brought against them:

After the pie hit Friedman and splattered on his face and torso, the two jumped offstage and ran out of the southeast exit of the building, followed closely by a man trying to catch them. A police officer also ran toward the exit but stayed inside.

The thrower was eventually caught by police, who detained her in Salomon's lobby before moving her elsewhere.

"One of the offenders was apprehended, placed in the custody of the Brown Department of Public Safety and identified as a Brown student," University spokesman Michael Chapman said in a statement released Tuesday night. "The University will review this incident through its non-academic disciplinary system to determine the appropriate response."

DPS Lt. Rick Lombardi told The Herald that no party wishes to press charges. Lombardi would not confirm the student's identity.

Pictures, hopefully, to come...

Friedman deserves a pie in the face for writing the trite and idiotic The World is Flat.

Seriously, he doesn't know what he's talking about. He sniffs the leading dogs but and barks out what he smells. Thanks for following the curve, Tom.

"The World is Flat" is an excellent book and a valuable description of the economic challenges facing our nation. If we had more Friedman and less Lou Dobbs we would be better equipped to compete in the coming decades.

a. You are correct
b. It takes courage to say what you said on this thread. This is turning into just about the most hateful thread I have read on this site.

Friedman is one of the bad guys, but throwing something at another person - even a silly pie-like plate of cream - is a crappy thing to do. It's violent and it's always wrong. Something bigger, more humiliating to Friedman but non-violent would have been more enjoyable.

What part of 'money is power and the free traders and neo-cons have the upper hand' is it you don't grasp? The Friedmans of our time have illegally, at times violently intervened, in many other countries. The Milton Friedmanites have wreaked death, destruction and havoc in South America, Indonesia, South Africa, Russia, Poland and many other countries. A pie in the face registers that his neo-con intervention into the sovereign affairs of other nations is not accepted by a large majority. It registers that Friedman is culpable in the illegal war in Iraq. A pie in the face is a simple but effective means of getting your message across!!!

Whether you are for trade or against it, I fidn it offensive to use these tactics against an intellectual. Friedman is not a policy maker nor a politician. He is simply a writer.

If you disagree with his ideas, do so with words and arguments. Violence, even mild forms like pie throwing and other vandalism, is wrong.

Americans just can't debate and discuss with people anymore. Always resort to violence. Hence all the road rage, lawsuits, etc.

This is what polarization does to people. I agree it doesn't help the cause, but people are so disgusted and frustrated with what is and has been going on in this country for the last 8 years. I know I am a lot angrier these days and frustrated because of the blatant injustice.

Oh, my. The irony is overwhelming.

helloworld2008: "Violence, even mild forms like pie throwing and other vandalism, is wrong. "

Since when is violence a concern to your right-wing trolls? Iraq is mired in violence, much of it thrust upon the citizens against their will. And you have the gall to speak out against pie-throwing? And pies that missed their mark, nonetheless?

You, my fellow citizen, and the rest of you 28%'rs will never see the folly of your fallacial ideology.

God help the U.S.A!

ADR: You deserve a pie in the face for asking such a stupid question.

Disagreeing with someone is slightly different from being a full throttle propagandist for opportunistic, imperialist militirism, promoting illgal & immoral Iraq war, peddling and selling lies of NeoCons and being yet another treasonous pro-Israeli Zionist piece of crap who sold our nation out and has blood of tens of thousands of innocent Arabs on his hands & 4000 Americans.

They should've thrown blood in his face, that would create a more accurate visual.

What the Friedmans and the other "free market" capitalists forget is that we got along just fine and, as a matter of fact, became the most robust economy on earth before totally free markets. So, the richest nation on Earth, the winners of the cold war and a country that promoted FAIR TRADE suddenly dropped all regulations/tariffs on incoming goods from other countries. All of the sudden China, India and any other country started copying and dumping American patented/invented goods onto our streets. Instead of going to the politicians, US companies moved to China and India to keep a better eye on their patents and had the icing on the cake of zero environmental reg enforcement (thus throwing away 30 years of learning how to co-exist with the environment and run a company) and slave labor. Another sad fact is that many of these countries have not opened or changed their import laws to accept more American goods.

So what do we have now, a smaller US manufacturing base, declining incomes for the Middle Class and a potential upcoming war with China and India over the last remaining natural resources (that we financed). WOW! And the largest gap between the haves and have nots ever....

No, not all but enough to provide a huge market for the child labor, slave labor manufacturers that destroy environments as well as organized labor forces. Friedman has been a strong voice promoting just this 'free market' here in the US. It is leading us into third world status, cheap goods from China, marketed through wal-mart and destroying our middle class. Now, lets all go buy some pies and improve our aim!

One of the more well deserved pie in your faces todate. Why? Because you can't really criticize Friedman's philosophy on any subject at all. He is just totally dishonest. His portfolio is the mid east writing for a paper that has a potential 2 million head Jewish readership. How can you trust anything he says? it is all just garbage. He is a panderer extraordinaire and not one word of his writing has any meaning whatsoever.

What flavor Kool-Aid is it you've been drinking? Must be downright yummy. I'm sorry to burst your CO2 bubble, but look at the data showing the rise in levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in terms of PPM in the last century (I'm too lazy to give you a link and smart enough to know not to try to teach a pig to sing).

I'm not wholly convinced that the effect is or is going to be as bad as some make it out to be, but the science on changes in the atmosphere is there, and there is nothing to account for it except human activity. The warming trend might be caused or exacerbated by other factors, but the changes to atmospheric gas concentrations would have the results we are seeing.

Thomas Friedman is one of the despicable free-traders. Fee trade and open markets don't work--never have. Only when nations are stable, self-sufficient, and socially responsible, can trade with others who are also self-sufficient take place. Trade with unequals sends good jobs and manufacturing to low wage countries.

What Friedman is advocating is corporate communism by using free trade which destroys nations. It was Karl Marx in 1848 who said: "the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone. . . . that I vote in favor of free trade."

Could not have happened to a more deserving egotist. Energy is but one of the lessor offenses he can be accused of . At the top of the list is his promotion of the illegal Iraq occupation. He has never apologized for his position. One can easily assume his motives are driven more by his pro-Israel stance than reason. He does not publicly promote the pro-Israel position as other AIPAC journeymen, but just a little softer.

His neoliberal support is at best superficial which typically presents a position with but a cursory view that barely touches the real issues. This works since he is the God of NYT, great at self-promotion and publishes one book after the other. Each time never accepting any serious criticism.

Any interested opponent to him might read Bad Samaritans, by Ha-Joon Chang.

Unfortunately there are many who profit from this Friedmanite economy and see nothing wrong with it. If only they could live in the countries, among the working people, that have been torn up from the violent implementation of the free market economy it may change their outlook. Far too many of us in the US never know the damage done by these people like Friedman and their policies.
