I've got some reasonably big Larry King news here, friends, that could well affect the future of one Ms. Katie Couric, so listen up.

CNN has just re-upped the septuagenarian newsman to a new deal that will keep him at the network until 2011 - this, first reported on TVnewser.com late yesterday. "Twas expected and re-upping LK to one more contract is NOT "big" news.

But this is: King did not secure a guarantee to continue anchoring the 9 p.m. hour, which - I am reliably told - opens the door wide for Couric when she leaves CBS after the inauguration, as she almost certainly will.

I like this idea A LOT. Katie Couric would be a great late-night interviewer. I can't think of anyone better.

She has the perfect combination of serious and funny. King is never funny or even fun except on very rare occasions for a very short time.

He has nothing that Katie doesn't have. He certainly doesn't have better understanding of world affairs, politics, or even the people he interviews. This is a great job for Katie.

Why should CNN run King into the ground? He's 75 and dull and getting more dull.

HuffPost, why don't you set up a poll here to see who people prefer--King or Couric.

I don't know who runs CNN and does the hiring but this is one sure way to lose Larry King's audience by putting Couric in his place. Then they could follow by an hour of Tony Snow. Give me a break.

Is CNN taking all of the rejects now. First Tony Snow now Katie Couric. Do they want to put me to sleep at 9pm?? There is a reason Katie Couric is not doing well on CBS - she's boring. There are only a few shows left on CNN that I can even stomach watching anymore and they want to add Couric - Come On!

Tony Snow, Glen Beck and now Katie Couric? Did Fox viewers start working in HR at CNN?

Larry is getting stiff, and it shows. Give the spot to Katie!

That's too bad (about the extension of his contract). Larry has attained almost iconic status because he's been at it so long and hauls in the big names and stories. He is, however, a poor interviewer. People call Couric all sorts of names, few complimentary. She would do at least as well as Larry in his chair.

Katie Couric raises the bar for journalism - We are in a phase of journalistic development where the dignity of journalists is below that of politicians.................
