Organized Crime Targeting Energy And Financial Markets

Attorney General Michael Mukasey warned Wednesday that organized criminal networks have penetrated portions of the international energy market and tried to control energy resources.

In a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, he said similar efforts have targeted the international financial system by injecting billions of illicit funds to try to corrupt financial service providers.

Makes me think I should go pull the 1973 Harry Browne book, "How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World", off the shelf. Read it decades ago, but If I remember correctly, part of his thesis concerned who's in charge, that the choice was either the "mafia" or the "government". Perhaps there is no difference, just that one is sanctioned or elected (sometimes) and the other is declared to be a criminal organization.

I believe the book was reissued in the '90s.

Someone here will set me straight, I'm sure. Meanwhile, I'll go look for the book.

That's Cheney, Bush and their cronies...nothing new. Why act like market manipulation is some new discovery they would have done something about if they'd only known about it. Sy Harding has been writing about the harm done by program trading for years.

They actually want us all to believe that AAA ratings were given to bad loans, because US banks or the insurance companies who ensured the bonds just didn't know better. The people rating the junk as AAA didn't know. The pension funds and money markets buying the junk didn't know. Nobody knew anything. Nobody notices the manipulation at every options expiration. Even the federal reserve manipulates the market to suits it's purpose.People joke and call it the Bernanke put, but that doesn't make it right.

Also, who is organized crime? How is that different from being in politics? There is no more rule of law in the world, so who is organized crime?
