I can understand that most people think that Friedman is deserving of public chastisement, but if you think that throwing a pie in someone's face while they are making a speech is a worthy form of protest, you probably have more in common with blackshirts than you might be comfortable admitting.

More childish behavior from the children of the left. These things happen when you don't have a point, and your agenda is Hollywood, and homosexuality.

I didn't realize that pie-throwing can be directly linked to Hollywood and homosexuality. Thank you for your insight. I guess the right prefers mud-slinging.

They threw like girls and then ran.

This incident just proves what I've been saying for years: We need background checks before bakers can sell a pie to someone. What's wrong with a 7-day waiting period? I have no problem with law abiding citizens owning pies (as long as they keep them in child-proof lockers), and I'm certainly not anti-hunting (sometimes the only way to stop a charging grizzly bear is with a pie), but this country is awash in pie-related violence and I for one have had enough. I'm calling my senators and congress person right away.

Unfortuantely, the pie lobby is quite powerful and no doubt they will continue to intimidate and bully legislators into keeping pie laws weak. I fear that, for the foreseeable future, criminals and psychopaths will continue o have unfetterd access to deadly pies.

"You can have my pie when you pry it from my cold, dead hand."

Really brave.
Hillary Clinton supported the war and NAFTA. Try throwing a pie in HER face and let's see:
1) what the Secret Service does to you; and
2) how many years in prison you get.

That's what I love about Huffington Post. No matter what the topic of a thread, at least one person will find a way to turn it into an anti-Clinton tirade. How strange that there are now progressives who can out-ditto the ditto-heads!

The same thing can be said for HuffPo's Bush / conservative / Christianity bashing. It's now suddenly uncomfortable or "inapprporate" when it happens to a liberal. How strange!

Eat some pie and be happy; it's easy.

I hope the Senate committee that investigates this doesn't expect us to buy the "single pie theory". I am pretty sure I saw a second pie being thrown from the Grassy Knoll. This is the worst crime in human history and we, the people, should demand a thorough and complete investigation.

Hillary '08

Are there any examples of conservatives or libertarians doing this to leftists or is this strictly a liberal thing.

Speech is one thing, physical contact is something else. What ever happened to "your rights end where my nose begins?"

Liberal speakers are never physically attacked on stage by conservatives. I can think of no incident of this nature (or anything remotely like it) that has happened to a leftist.

The pie-throwing nonsense is uniquely a leftist thing. It's a standard method of disrupting and shutting down political speech.

I was, on several occasions, physically assaulted by conservative Christians for having long hair and wearing an anti-war shirt. I was quite bady beaten. The same crowd pushed a friend of mine down a flight of stairs and broke his arm for the "crime" of wearing John Lennon-style glasses.

Conservatives MURDER people who disagree with them (e.g. Kent Stae, Schwerner/Goodman/Chaney, the Oklahoma City bombing, etc.). I'd say a pie in the face is pretty tame compared to conservatives leaving truck bombs outside of daycare centers.

I don't care if he got pied, but I do care to know why he did. I have read The world is flat and thought it was good book. I don't read his columns much, but i read Longtitudes and Latitudes and it was basically was a rehash of his columns. Those columns, I though definitely went to the core of why a lot of people hate or want to hurt us. I really want to know the other side of Friedman and would appreciate it if somebody could explain why or post links to show me why there is so much resentment towards him. Thanks.

You won't. Most of the folks here think the pie was appropriate. I for one think it was childish and taints criticism that these folks might have. While Friedman was wrong about the war, he did not start it. Nor has he contributed to it's continuation. To say otherwise is delusional.

He has been a relentless pusher for the war and for FreeTrade (not free) agreements. He lives in an ivory tower and is married to one of the wealthiest families in america. Like most people with money, his progressive ideals have all peeled away.

I'm no fan but that was juvenile, classless, and dumb. A smart question during the Q & A would have been more appropriate.

No one would have noticed a smart question. Even people in the audience would forget a smart question. A pie in the face is memorable. People who have no idea that anything Friedman says is controversial suddenly have to stop and think, is there an alternate viewpoint?

I doubt I'd throw a pie at anyone, and there are certainly people who deserve it more than him, but still it was an effective tactic.

This is assault, and the perpetrators belong in prison. Gosh, possibly they'll meet some big strong guy, and they can get married on the steps of city hall in San Fransissy.

The name Friedman and economics--Milton Friedman- is a chilling thought.
Attempts at implementing his ideas of privatization, deregulation, and diminishing social programs for those in need, have resulted in executions and disappearances in Chile, Brazil, Indonesia, China and Yeltsin's Russia. The rich get richer and the rest get poorer, executed or disappeared.
A pie in the face is something a Friedman can brush off and continue basking in his wealth. This cannot be said for the nonrich victims of Friedman economics.
