If Arianna thinks that McCain is a part of the "lunatic fringe on the right," then she has no idea where the right really is. Most of the people I know that consider themselves conservatives, think McCain is a Democrat in Republicans clothing. In fact, Rush and Hannity have been bolo punching him ever since the MSM's road his horse to the nomination along with the help of the Democratic crossovers that voted him in seeing that he was a pushover. Dean said it best, he was far more worried about Romney than he was McCain.
McCain the author of the moderate seven, the Maverick remember. Well, I am a Maverick too and I am not voting for him. Period!
All statistics can be manipulated. The nerve of this punk trying to say poor people are better off today. If the middle class is dying on the vine that must make the people without absolutely rich. This asshole is part of the lunitic right.
Stossel and ABC have a right wing agenda alright, but our government is horribly inept at social programs What matters here is war. Dont get side tracked by Stossels swipe at Obama on big government issues. McCain means war, and Hillarys recent saber rattling was frightening too. We have many issues facing this country, but as long as we are stuck in the middle east none of them will be solved. We just dont have the money.
Arianna is right as always. Welfare recepients were given very little or no training. She should of mentioned that half of the former ADFC on welfare moved to SSI claiming some form of disability as a substitute for welfare, and this is why the income poverty level is higher! That is a fact that no one talks about. Arianna you should look into for your next argument.

they sound great live
Arianna, you did a great job of defending yourself, but you shouldn't have to defend yourself from the likes of John Stossel, who kept flinging charges at you while not giving you a chance to fling any back. The S.O.B. doesn't fight fair and you should stay the heck off of his show and keep the heck away from his screwed-up "charts.".
It only winds up being another segment of his famous "give me a break."
Well, give him a break and stay away -- as far away as possible.
I don't understand how Arianna's house has anything to do with the validity of climate change.
She could live in the Taj Mahal or a mud yurt, it's got nothing to do with it.
It has everything to do with it; it's called hypocrisy. She at least is willing to admit. She called it contradiction.
The problem with all the policy pundits on the left and right is the lack of details. How exactly do you help the poor? How exactly do you fix the economy? How do you increase the standard of iving?
For me it's all about becoming energy independent as a nation. Through nuclear, clean coal, wind, and sun, combined with real energy conservation, we cut down on our energy requirements and move our nation off the oil grid and onto the electric.
Just think if we had started this after the first oil embargo. Instead of all that wealth going across the ocean it would have ended up in the wallets and purses of Americans. If you want to get people out of poverty get them into the middle class. Their kids will be the ones who reap the rewards breaking the cycle. You'll end hopelessness which breeds fatalism leading to drug use and violence.
You'll simplify foreign policy. It won't be resource driven but based on real national security issues.
Energy independence, goal number one.

Oooooo, look - Stossel has pretty charts! And he talks real slow and simple so all us unwashed masses out here can (possibly) begin to grasp the deep complexities of his arguments!
What an insulting, pathetic tool, er, I mean - hard-hitting, groundbreaking journalist he is!
"insulting, pathetic tool"
Pretty much describes Stossel to a "T".
I forget it was on. Stopped by for some intellectual analysis. Nevermind. Continue the food fight.
Er... I love Arianna too.
I
Arianna, we all know you want more and more government programs but there is one big problem: Government programs fail for one simple reason, the government is not efficient.
It's a great idea to help the poor but my concern is that the more programs we install, the more people become dependent on the government and then the chances decrease of people ever getting out of poverty.
The more you make it comfortable to be in poverty (free money, free food, free health care) the less people you will see work to get out of it. If I had a choice of working 40 hours a week for $25,000 or not work at all for $20,000 worth of free benefits from the government . . . I would probably sit at home all day and be lazy. Why you ask? Because government made it easy for me to be worthless.
Then why are the richest, cleanest, most livable countries on Earth Socialist?
So you are saying that libralism = socialism?
Please explain these great socialistic countries you speak of.
A nation such as France uses mainly just nuclear plants. But you liberals won't let that happen here. Your environmentalists pals are blocking building new nuclear plants. So we have mostly coal plants and you b!tch about that. And they've blocked any chance of building refineries and modernized ones. And then we have probably 10 times more automobiles than Europe. Admit it, most families have more then one car. And, of course, soccer mom has to have her SUV. So yes, maybe more emissions are going into the air. But Americans still mainly buy gas-guzzlers, don't they? Hey, while you are at it, tell Al Gore to get rid of his limo's, SUV's, etc. ? Ask Bobby Kennedy, Jr. to get rid of his THREE SUV's?
How wonderful! Looks like those gubmint programs are working out for you.
That's great but I have never been on one and never will be.
Welfare is one of those poorly designed gov't programs used in arguments about how bad gov't is. Bad governance will of course result in bad government. Unfortunately, we put into office too many politicians who believe that gov't is inherently bad. Once in office they proceed to fulfill their prophecy by governing badly. Welfare was an attempt to buy off the poor. It was not an attempt to create an economy where anyone who wanted a job would have one. Nor was it an attempt to create an economy where every job would provide a living wage. In stead, we have an economy that rewards billionaire CEOs with multimillion dollar contracts and bonuses no matter how poorly their companies do. Welfare was a means to keep quiet people who are not in the economy. When these people develop their own alternate economies, we fill our prisons with them. Arianna is correct. The right wing has no interest in gov't of the people, by the people and for the people. And it has been an obstacle to such gov't for a very long time.
