Mcgovern

Former senator and Democratic presidential aspirant George McGovern says he sees some striking similarities when it comes to his run at the White House and that of Sen. Barack Obama. But ultimately, McGovern argues, Obama has organized a much wider political coalition and thus a greater chance of electoral success.

"I think that is his strength," McGovern told The Huffington Post. "He has very broad appeal. He certainly is going to galvanize the black vote. But he has strong appeal to voters of all kinds. Some of the old buckaroos out here in South Dakota are for him."

In recent days, following Obama's loss in the Pennsylvania primary, concern has been raised in Democratic circles that the Illinois Democrat could not expand his political base beyond African-Americans and college students -- a limitation that stunted McGovern's candidacy.

But McGovern, who lost the 1972 election to incumbent Richard Nixon by landslide margins, doesn't attribute his defeat to merely the contours of his political base. Indeed, he argues that his candidacy was damaged more by the infighting that occurred within the Democratic Party even after he had secured the nomination.

"After I had the nomination won and everything except the crowning at the convention, the other candidates that I had defeated in the primaries and the caucuses ganged up on me and spent the next month just bad mouthing me around the country," he said. "And, of course the Nixon people used some of the quotes and threw them back at me in the general election."

It is in this regard -- not necessarily his general election defeat -- that McGovern worries history could end up repeating itself. Noting that Obama seems poised to be the eventually nominee, though believing Sen. Hillary Clinton should stay in the race, he called for a more civil discourse between the two candidates.

"That is the one minus," he said. "I think there has been a little too much negative backbiting. And that is the one negative that concerns me because it is what happened to me in '72... I had to go into that convention exhausted, instead of spending the last few months carefully and systematically picking a running mate and getting my convention organized. We can't have that again."

This, however, is not the only similarity McGovern draws between his run for the White House and the current process. In '72, after he won the California primary and clinched the nomination, McGovern's Democratic opponents argued that the delegation should have been rewarded on a proportional basis, rather than winner-take-all. It was, McGovern says, a changing of the rules in mid-game that resulted both in the weakening of his campaign and his limping into the convention. Thirty-six years later, he sees parallels with the Clinton campaign's push to count the results of the non-DNC-sanctioned Florida and Michigan primaries.

Story continues below

"We can't overturn those rules now that the counting is over," he said. "I think Barack didn't even enter one contest [Michigan]. Those states knew what the rules were, all the candidates knew what the rules were, and to change it now I think is wrong."

It's not the only process issue on which McGovern, who has endorsed Clinton, finds himself at varying odds with the New York Democrat. On the topic of superdelegates, which were created as a concession to the primary reforms that McGovern initiated, the South Dakotan argues that these party insiders must take into strong consideration the pledged delegate tally.

"Yeah, I think that is important," he said. "It also reduces the frustration we would have if the candidate with the most pledged delegates was rejected. There is going to be some frustration anyway. There always is. I just hope it doesn't result in the kind of back-fighting I had to face after I secured the nomination."

Despite these differences, McGovern is not backing away from his support of Clinton. He deems her "one of the most talented, articulate and well-informed people in the country," whom he has known for 35 years, since she worked on his campaign in Texas. And he expects her to stay in the race at least until the last primary commences in his home state. But in the interim, he hopes, the tone and tenor of the campaign will be ratcheted down a notch,

"I don't want to see Hillary or Barack giving McCain ammunition in the general election," said McGovern. "It is more important that we not have another four years of Bush government."

Thanks for the link. It's pretty obvious that this is what's been going on... Hillary hasn't really been running, and she hasn't really been in charge of her own campaign or Bill. She's fooling all those women out there, who are really voting for Bill's third term.

The democratic leadership--Reid, Pelosi, Dean-- are pathetic. It's obvious to any objective observer (like Jim Clyburn) that Hillary is only staying in to damage Obama so badly that he can't win in November and she can run in 2012. They need to stop this suicide mission. There is a reason Democrats haven't legislated since the late 70's. It's beacuse they have no spine. End it already! The Republicans would have put this to bed months ago...

Senator McGovern, I campaigned for you when you ran for president. Now would you do me a favor and ask Hillery to stop the negative campaigning? She can't win but she can destroy Obama's chance of winning. If that's her goal it is the ultimate selfishness.

You and your friends need to impress this upon her and let her know how much people hate this.

George McGovern's fatal flaw is that he thinks and examines an issue critically, looking at it from all sides before reaching a conclusion.

Caolas, I get your point. It takes longer to make a decision when one holds an issue up to the light to see all sides. Normally, this is a good quality for anyone to have. It's now time to discuss the findings. IOW, "Either shit, or get off the pot."

I do respect Sen. McGovern's comments above. He's right about the Democratic back-fighting contributing to their defeat in Nov. Unfortunately, it's started a lot earlier this year, providing the Republican's drooling attack machine with plenty of fuel.

To all Hillary supporters :

You're my fellow democrats and I'm certain we will be united once we have a nominee .

But can you please explain to me Why Why Why republicans are trying so hard to have her as an opponent in the fall ?

I really need to know because it scares me !

The Hillary supporter's that I've asked face to face, have told me that it is because "Just in case McCain fails, their second choice is Hillary. And they applaud her for "reaching across the aisle" to be inclusive. Then they call Barack Obama divisive and cite Rev. Wright's hate speech as an example of how Obama will lead.

Anything to win.

Online -- I most Clinton supporters will just ignore this question.

The ends justify the means.

Because the GOP will be able to easily brand the Clintons as compulsive liars. I mean, with Obama, you have some lose ties and poorly worded phrases. With the Clintons you have the same lose ties and poorly worder phrases (times ten), plus direct, right out of their own mouths, lies, lies, and more lies.

They can also link Clinton to Bush as a Bush-Clinton dynasty. I mean, the younger voters in this country have never seen anyone in office besides a Bush or a Clinton and they really don't want to see 28 years of Bush-Clinton. Clinton is completely unelectable and they know it.

That is the one thing that is so obvious they want to go against her.....When Rove, every Republician strategist, Limbaugh, McCain, they all are helping Hillary. THAT SHOULD SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE TO EVERYONE - THERE IS A REASON!!!!

Two possible reasons:
1) Hillary is easier to beat
2) McCain vs Hillary would ensure that the agenda continues.

Emmav, I have asked and asked that very question myself here and in numerous other blogs. And Hillary supporters do not want to answer it.

Here's the list (and I'm sure it's woefully incomplete):

Rush Limbaugh
Ann Coulter
Pat Buchanan
Joe Scarborough
Bob Novak
Richard Mellon Scaiffe (who once accused Hillary of MURDER for christ's sake!)

These people all want HIllary to be the nominee.

And Hillary supporters need to address this. Because it's very, very troubling.

The media has diagnosed every demo there is....the old...the young...the rich....the poor...the educated....the uneducated....the bowlers, gun toters and beer drinkers.....And somehow ALWAYS finds a way to give the advantage to Clinton. But just today, the media is finally starting to raise the most incredible point in the whole race. HILLARY HAS LOST THE SUPPORT OF AN ENTIRE RACE OF PEOPLE !!!!!!!! Do you know how incredibly sad this fact is ? Hillary Clinton (who's husband was so loved as to have been called The First Black President) has alienated the black people of America to such a degree that there is no way blacks will support her EVER. This has nothing to do with Obama !!!! Keep in mind folks....Hillary started this campaign with close to 82% of the black support. But as blacks learned more about her (Goldwater Girl....Against Civil Rights Act of '64...etc.) combined with her LBJ statements and Bill's minimizing of Obama (fairy tale...Jesse won S.Carolina too...etc) blacks were first of all shocked...and then incredibly offended by these realities to a degree that can never be recovered. WE FEEL DECEIVED !!!! We hope that our friends of all races understand how we as blacks feel. This is the main story that needs to get out to the superdelegates. Hillary ABSOLUTELY KILLED HER ELECTABILTY. Simple as that !

Greg,
I am offended by both Hillary and Bill's tactics, and I am not even black. I can't say whether or not the Clintons are racist, but I can say with certainty that they are willing to use the fact that some people are. In a way, I find that even more disgusting. I can not see myself supporting Hillary under any circumstance. I just can't.

The superdelegates are going to do what is in their interests. They will vote for the candidate that will help them get elected. How could that ever be Clinton?

it is so interesting to see that Obama supporters are in such a rush for Hillary to get out the race. what are they afraid of ? also, some of his supporters seem to predict that the Republicans will win if Hillary is the nominee. if they have they can tell the future, I wonder why they waste their time posting blogs! they can make a good living with their talent out in the real world.
dear Obama people, please get a hold of yourselves, and stop bullying Hillary people. With 41 states votes counted, and 9 more togo, no matter who wins this nomination it is going to be a 51% to 49%. So, I suggest the 51% stops pissing the 49% off right now. no matter what, one side is going to need the other to win the White House.

I'll tell you what we're afraid of. The same thing a lot DEMOCRATS are afraid of. People of the same party, with generally similar ideological views and policy, who are running in a primary together do not viciously attack their opponent. Hillary's behavior is too much. It's not that she hates our party.. as far as I know... but she doesn't see anything wrong with what she is doing.

We don't need another president who's ends always justify their means. No one will make her go though, that I can guarantee you. That is something she will have to do on her own, just like she will have to someday make amends with the black community, or veterans who feel slighted by her embellished stories about Bosnia, or the Democratic party for that matter for almost destroying our chance at regaining some sanity in our governing body becuase of her narcissism.

utd - you are dreaming!

Candidates running against each other in the same party alway attack each other. For your information this campaign has been a mild campaign compared to others in history, long ago and recent.

Any criticism of Obama is labeled negative by his supporters. You people are ridiculous. I'm sick and tired of your characterization of Clinton as some kind of vicious monster, out to destroy Obama and the Democratic Party for her own "narcisistic" purposes.

As for Clinton having to mend her fences in the future with blacks, veterans and the Democratic Party - I don't think she has anything to apologize for.

It's the black community that lied about her because it made them more comfortable turning their backs on a good friend; Clinton's successful efforts for veterans in the Senate establishes her credentials with them; the Democratic Party has a lot to apologize for to her and to all Democrats for establishing the most stupid, undemocratic, chaotic primary/caucus system that insures a defeat in November.

By the way, keep up your constant, hateful, name-calling attacks on Hillary Clinton. You and your friends are driving people like me and my friends to support John McCain in the fall.

You shouldn't throw rocks at people you will need if your candidate wins the nomination.

if HRC steals this thing... then why don't we use the convention to start "The New Democratic Party". and just walk out. we are going to lose to Mc Cain anyway if she is the nominee.

there isn't anything or anyone who can get out the republican (hate) vote like Hilary... so we would be losing it anyway.

It would give us three years to get the party ready for the next Presidential election cycle

Thanks for bringing this up drzoon, condew, and DuckofDeath. I would love to see a major grass roots revolt if the election is stolen by HillBill.

This country is long overdue for a third party. Doing away with the electoral college and superdelegates will be more representative of the will of American voters. Due to the major divisions within both the Democratic and Republican parties, there would most likely be more than three candidates running for president. And less pandering to voters. Well, maybe not, but it will be harder for candidates to gain votes that way because of voters' strong identification with one party over another.

It would be a shame to have to wait three more years, however your point is well taken, drzoon. There is work to be done to pave the way for The New Democratic Party.

Hillary has Bill on her side and she can't win, she came in third in Iowa, she cried in N.H and found her voice, Super Tuesday was supposed to be the day, NOT!! Lost how many in a row?? There is a large percentage of Democratic voters that can't stand the Clinton's and don't want them in the White House. I imagine in the General that percentage along with independents will bolt or stay home. I hear Hillary speak and she gives me a headache, no lie! I become deaf when Johnny McCain speaks.
