With the nation bracing for a rice shortage, and nationwide wholesale retailers Sam's Club and Costco rationing the amount of rice each consumer can buy, the Huffington Post wants to know your thoughts on the rice shortage. Fill out the poll below, and feel free to add some thoughts in the comments section.

What are your thoughts regarding the current rice shortage?

  • I'm very worried, and I've started to stock up.
  • I'll probably buy some this weekend.
  • I don't use all that much rice as it is, so I'm not too affected.
  • I think it's much ado about nothing.
  • What rice shortage?

In a recent PBS Frontline episode, the story was how the federal government was manipulated by lobbyists to pay the owners of rice farmland not to grow rice.

In other words, our Government, under the Republicans and Bush, is now paying farmers more to NOT grow rice than what they could get (before prices shot up) if they grew and sold their rice.
Not to belabour the obvious, but we could help to balance the budget and increase world rice stocks by not using tax dollars to pay farmers to not grow food that is dearly needed in the world.

The extent of the incompetence and corruption of the last 7 years really is unbelievable.

STOP ETHANOL PRODUCTION NOW! It's wreaking havoc on food supply and prices and takes more energy to produce than it replaces.

If that weren't such an asinine pronouncement, I would assume you were being paid by Exxon to insert that little blurb. As it is, you sound so stupid that I'm guessing you have simply bought into corporate America's sorta clever manipulation of the media.

Sure, it isn't big oil greed, it isn't bush's multi-trillion dollar illegal war, it isn't the current administration's policies of rewarding the rich (for doing nothing) and screwing the poor and middle class....it's ethanol production.

For sure - and I bet you were standing behind Joe McCarthy cheering him on every inch of the way!

35% percent of the IDIOTS on this board are worried and will stock up on rice.

I can clearly see why we ended up with a MORON like Bush for President.

It's the same thing as OIL, There is no shortage just greedy speculators (must be those Neocons).
People act a lot like a herd of cattle-if one runs the whole herd is gone! If someone says "There's going to be a sugar shortage", people will run to the stores, no matter it be true or false.
Remember when Bushco said "Iran had a hand in 911"? Anybody who had a thought and ask for proof was branded "UNPAITRIOTIC" The rest rallyed around the douch bag and then Re-elected this LYING BUNCH OF WEASELS!
When are Americans going to think for themselves?

Americans are complete and utter morons. The stupidest people to have ever existed on this planet.

Deal with it.

There's a kernel of truth to your blatant blanket statement. But it's not necessarily because we're Americans. There's a link between muscle strength and muscle usage. There's a link between thought and brain usage. Most people in easy societies have forgotten how to think. Unfortunately, these none-thinkers, the "mangled minds of middle a'Merica" do vote, and usually for the wrong person, for the wrong reasons. What's rare about Obama, is that he should of turned out much different, if statistics are applied. People see this. Especially young people who have still active minds. Will the treachery of the old win out against the beauty and energy of youth? Who has the wisdom in this equation?

BTW, I was at Costco, and I saw the rice hoarders. They were all FAB (fresh across the border) Hispanics. I'm thinking they're sending it back to their relatives. What a waste.

All I can say is the people who say "there's no rice shortage" also said, "buy a house now, you can't go wrong."
How long does rice keep?

What do I think? Who cares? I think I heard almost everyone - including Fox News, unbelievably - state categorically that there is not a rice shortage in this country. None. So what does it matter what I or anyone else "thinks" about this topic?
In these twisted times, opinions, rumors, or out-right lies often cross (or are pushed) into the realm of "facts." This reminds me of "teaching the controversy" about evolution. Again, there is no argument.
A fact is a fact, a truth is a truth.

Here are a few other things which are also not subject to opinion because the facts are well established.

1) George Bush & Co. are liars, thieves and murderers.
2) The Grateful Dead were an AWFUL band. How do you screw up a Chuck Berry song? They knew how.
3) Thai Chicken Pizza is not pizza. It's Thai Chicken on a wad of dough.
4) If you see a painting and say "My kid could have done that", you're absolutely correct.

Have a nice weekend.

Turn your cynicism toward productive thought. The highest yield rice fields in the world are in the Sacramento valley of California. I heard they can get 6 tons per acre per year, (three crops) when everything goes right. If there is a shortage, it's either short lived, or Ken Lay's legacy. (create a shortage, run up the price, use the money to have young girls)
