McCain Exploited Legal Loophole To Use Wife's Jet On The Cheap

New York Times:

Given Senator John McCain's signature stance on campaign finance reform, it was not surprising that he backed legislation last year requiring presidential candidates to pay the actual cost of flying on corporate jets. The law, which requires campaigns to pay charter rates when using such jets rather than cheaper first-class fares, was intended to reduce the influence of lobbyists and create a level financial playing field.

But over a seven-month period beginning last summer, Mr. McCain's cash-short campaign gave itself an advantage by using a corporate jet owned by a company headed by his wife, Cindy McCain, according to public records. For five of those months, the plane was used almost exclusively for campaign-related purposes, those records show.

Mr. McCain's campaign paid a total of $241,149 for the use of that plane from last August through February, records show. That amount is approximately the cost of chartering a similar jet for a month or two, according to industry estimates.

The senator was able to fly so inexpensively because the law specifically exempts aircraft owned by a candidate or his family or by a privately held company they control. The Federal Election Commission adopted rules in December to close the loophole -- rules that would have required substantial payments by candidates using family-owned planes -- but the agency soon lost the requisite number of commissioners needed to complete the rule making.

The photo above of McCain: reaching his arms out to you, like that uncle of yours who you're not too psyched to hug cause he smells bad.

Yes, I'll tell my wife that she can't fly on my plane or borrow my bicycle. That will work.
12:02 PM on 04/28/2008
As long as your wife doesn't pass laws that tell your competitors that they can't lend their spouses their transportation, you should be fine.

Wright is a lunatic. If Obama wants to be president of the United States he's got to get Bigot Wright OFF THE STAGE.
11:30 AM on 04/28/2008
Wrong tread.....keep on topic please the article is not about Wright or your bigot views of him.
10:32 AM on 04/28/2008
He's just like all the politicians that say one thing and do another. However, given the choice of lying politicians, I'd take a lying democrat over a lying republican any day.

As much as I don't like McCain I don't see what the problem is.

First the law that is supposed to close this loophole is silly. Let's say a candidate and their spouse are loaded and own their own plane. These rules would mean they would essentially have to pay themselves. They then have every right to give that money right back to their own campaign. Making this nothing more than a requirement to do a bunch of paperwork.

In this case while the article points out that he has not broken any rules implies it's an ethical thing. I don't see that. This is a company that is run by his wife. Arguing that this company allowing him to use the plane would create a conflict of interest is silly. If he is willing to be compromised than what happens when he is (if he is) elected POTUS? I would think his wife running the company would be far more influential in any possible preferential treatment than simply providing a plane.

It's a red herring!

Let me see if I can explain to you why this is an issue. Take a step back. Lobbyists are letting candidates for office use their aircraft, and it is tantamount to a financial gift, which can have corruptive effects and give advantage to the candidates that are the beneficiaries of such largesse. If you are challenging a candidate who is receiving free aircraft transportation, you are at a disadvantage. McCain comes along with legislation to remove this advantage. But the law has a "legal loophole" which just so happens to pertain to him: if the aircraft is family-owned, it is not subject to the law. So basically, McCain levelled the playing field, but only for everyone else. Where the other candidates payed market rates to fly, he flew on the cheap, which gave him a financial advantage. The lobbyist influence angle isn't as relevant.

Sounds like an "elitist" act.

its's not really much of a reach to see what pigs the repubs are. Are you proud of Dick Cheney?
10:39 AM on 04/28/2008
I love Dick Cheney!

You guys hate him because he is everything that you are not. He's confident, rich and powerful. I admire someone who makes his/her own way. Liberals despise such things because they feel that success is not within their reach. They are timid weaklings who despise confidence and the success that it brings.

So sad...
11:46 AM on 04/28/2008
I think you love him because he takes government mondy and then does not pay any taxes. You hate those people that take government cheese to stay aloive but you honor taking millions from the government and 'make their oiwn way'.

Tell you what Mike, I'll pay taxes that pay for the cheese, you pay for your hero Cheney. Hint: You cannot afford to pay for him, but I can buy someone cheese.

He's also totally corrupt, and morally bankrupt.

Let's get this miniscule piece off the home page of Huff. Why not post the Mike Rich article? It was brilliant and discusses how McCain was the only one who lost in PA.

Yes, Senator McCain is loaded. Absolutely agreed. Do I care if he flies around in his wife's corporate jet? No. Let's get to the real issues.
The new ads from the DNC get to the heart of the matter. Why have we waited so long to portray McBush for what he really is? More of the relevant issues, please. We have all had enough of lapel pins, sniper fire, etc.

great example of trying to make something out of nothing..the headline itself states "legal loophole"..does the word LEGAL mean anything? or are these just words?
12:09 PM on 04/28/2008
Your willful ignorance of the hypocrisy involved is breathtaking.
07:29 AM on 04/28/2008
"Don't bother me with the rules. I make the rules." Sorry John you keeping sounding more and more like Dick Nixon
04:02 AM on 04/28/2008
Well I don't get this. Am I to understand that there is a law that states that you can't use your own stuff for cheap. Am I to overpay to use things I own. It doesn't make sense. Why should McCain have to pay more than he needs to to use his wife's plane?
12:39 PM on 04/28/2008
Because he got a law passed that says everyone else has to! Are you blind?

Can someone tell me why I should care? He's not breaking any laws. He's not accepting anything from corporations or lobbyists, so he's not under their thrall. Under no circumstances will I vote for the guy, but my reasons have nothing to do with the fact that he's got a really rich wife.
03:32 AM on 04/28/2008
Well mostly because it serves as yet another glaring example of how holier than thou politcian types talk out of one side of their mouth publicly and out of the other in private. This is only like the 9th time John McCan't has taken one of those mousy, emphatically unequivocal stances of his (like anti-torture, anti-tax cut, etc.) and then gone and done the polar opposite by the time the former goes to press...

It's at least worthy of a post.

Exactamundo ... I knew he had dough, that's not the issue. I know his foreign policy and the kind of Supreme Court justices he'll appoint -- those are issues.
12:43 PM on 04/28/2008
This is not an issue? The senator's character and integrity, or lack thereof, are on display here.

Just think of it as "looking Presidential" .... when the successful candidate will get to tool around in Marine One or Air Force One at taxpayer expense and burn gasoline like it was a penny a gallon.
10:47 AM on 04/28/2008
Jets don't burn gasoline...

They burn jet fuel: Jet-A & B (Civil/Commercial), JP-5 (Navy), JP-8 (Air Force)

Idiot...

Will Obama loses in November if McCain picked a young hispanic woman as his VP?
12:44 PM on 04/28/2008
No. Stop focusing on skin color so damn much.

Good Gawd People,

We'd better have something much more than this and I'm not seeing much of anything on both sides of this isle.

yup. this whole discussion pretty much ranks as--and is rank as--garbage. much like the decision to feature this story so prominently all day yesterday--and STILL THIS MORNING??? WTF???

It's because McCain is clean. As much as you liberals want to paint him as being dirty, everyone who knows him knows that he is a man of honor. He is Democrats' worst nightmare: An honest Rdepublican who is mostly centrist.

You guys have no chance this time around. Sorry, but you did it to yourselves.
