Mccain Jet

New York Times:

Given Senator John McCain's signature stance on campaign finance reform, it was not surprising that he backed legislation last year requiring presidential candidates to pay the actual cost of flying on corporate jets. The law, which requires campaigns to pay charter rates when using such jets rather than cheaper first-class fares, was intended to reduce the influence of lobbyists and create a level financial playing field.

But over a seven-month period beginning last summer, Mr. McCain's cash-short campaign gave itself an advantage by using a corporate jet owned by a company headed by his wife, Cindy McCain, according to public records. For five of those months, the plane was used almost exclusively for campaign-related purposes, those records show.

Mr. McCain's campaign paid a total of $241,149 for the use of that plane from last August through February, records show. That amount is approximately the cost of chartering a similar jet for a month or two, according to industry estimates.

The senator was able to fly so inexpensively because the law specifically exempts aircraft owned by a candidate or his family or by a privately held company they control. The Federal Election Commission adopted rules in December to close the loophole -- rules that would have required substantial payments by candidates using family-owned planes -- but the agency soon lost the requisite number of commissioners needed to complete the rule making.

I'm confused; the unagreed on proposed change in the rules was first discussed in December 2007. But, the Times added up flights from August 2007 through February 2008. How does this work? So, back in August 2007 McCain should have anticipated a new rule would be discussed but not approved in December 2007 and based on his clairvoyance he should have changed his behavior 5 months before to comply with a rule which never was authorized? What a reach.

You know CNN just ran a video clip of McCain's very very brief and sarcastic answer, something to the effect of, "there was nothing illegal about it" as he quickly shut-up the questioner. I've read many stories recently about his short fuse. I really really think his temper will come through when he starts debating or when Obama can actually start to take him on (after Hillary finally drops/or is kicked out).

I've noticed that he does seem angry a lot and am waiting for a outburst during a debate. ha ha ha. I can see it now. Perhaps he has great reason to be angry. I think I'd be if I were a POW for what 4 years???? All the more reason to consider the possibilities of a mental/emotional conidition that someone who was a POW might have, don't you think?????? Do you want a hot tempered guy with a hair trigger running for office??? I don't. Also, I sense he is kind of "slow" in grasping questions and such. I am confident it is his age. I see the same type thing in my own parents who are older than McCain. He's just not alert enough.

Anyway, I think the proof will be in the pudding once Obama can concentrate only on McCain. McCain won't be able to hide his temper.......bet ya a dollar to donuts I'm right.

My feelings exactly. No one can be a POW for 5.5 years and come away mentally unscathed. He probably has PTSD. I think his medical records including any mental evaluations should be released. He has admitted to anger issues in the past and now denies it calling it "passion" instead. He's definately slow in grasping and answering questions and that's where his age will become an issue too. He's a walking time bomb and should never be commander -in-chief. The press isn't as hard on him and I think it's because he squeezes the POW card (never letting anyone forget). I hope that changes. I think he's an evil little man and will " flip out " before Nov..

John McCain sure knows all the loopholes doesnt he? He was one of those writing the finance reform bill. I deplore him and his tactics. He would use his wife as a doormat so what or who is to stop him from using her plane. She? No. She knows her place. He defined it for her.

Loopholes? You mean take advantage of what is lawful? Huh?
Great, let's see how many Dems return their "tax rebates" so as to not take advantage of something that does not exist in most years or just simply due to the fact that an economic stimulus is bad...bad....bad. Less tax is bad. Corporations are bad despite the fact that corperate America exists due to Ma & Pa Shareholders, but let's not explain that to the LCD.
Can't wait to see all that dough that will be returnded from the rebates.
Free money and every LCD that the Dems pander to will cash their checks. Yeah, they'll still vote for Dems, but when it comes to real money, principles will go out the door. What economic stimulus? Let's vote against it the next time it comes around. How dare my neighbor own shares, be an owner in a corporation.
Odds are pretty good that many a Ma & Pa will invest their rebates in stocks. Gee, how do we explain that to the masses?

So this is a story about how John McCain is not breaking the law? Sounds like another attempt by the New York Times to spin a non-story to try to make McCain look bad. Pretty pathetic.

I love how they point out that he is following the letter of the law but not the "spirit" of the law. Please, someone, explain to me what the "spirit" of a law is??

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:55 PM on 04/27/2008

The spirit of the law was to reduce the influence of corporations on elected officials by preventing them from taking free flights. There is likely not to be an undue influence situation when the politician or a close family member is the owner of the plane in question which is why the exception was written into the law. It seems this is a case where McCain was following both the letter and the spirit of the law.

........................anybody making notes on who is a true "elitist"? I keep remembering how the MSM hounded Kerry about his wife, and are now so very silent about the heiress in the McCrazy house!!

And that's one of them problems w/this upcoming election.
Cool if Kerry marries into money, but bad if McCain does. And, of course, lets just completely forget about the possible sexual motivation. But then again, it sould be legal if a few want to pay for it, even if it does support organized crime.
Kerry & McCain did nothing wrong. If it is a question of morality, well.....each to his own.

And one more point.......
There can never be a rational, logical, intelligent debate about any of the candidates if Dems & Reps want to act as schoolchildren and justify anything because someone from the other side did something. It is true that two wrongs do not make a right.
Why do so many use this tired, false logic on this site or the polar opposite political sites? What happened intelligence & logic?

I see a very poor, broken man who is trying to work out of his PTSD and depression by finding someone who provide him with a lot of booze until he get back to the top of the heap. And succeeding! He can now fly cheaply, drink as much as he like and he can have the main stream mediocrities (MSM) drinking out of his palm.

Except that it is just such a story that helps to bring out the truth of the upcoming election. Folks tend to discuss things a tad more civil and party spin designed to appeal to the LCD is less of a factor.
Most of the headlines on this site are designed to incite, designed to attract LCD lemmings. This story, although I agress is a non-story, brings in better balance when discussing the candidates.

You can't "exploit" a legal loophole. You can either comply with a law or you can break a law. And in this case all Senator McCain did was comply with the law.
