Scowcroft

Brent Scowcroft, the national security adviser to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, said on Monday that he agrees with the position, stated mainly by Sen. Barack Obama, that the U.S. would benefit from having direct talks with the leaders of its most distrusted adversaries.

"Absolutely," said Scowcroft, when asked by The Huffington Post whether he thought the next president should meet with the likes of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "It's hard to make things better if you don't talk."

Scowcroft, a former Air Force general who is widely considered to be one of the preeminent foreign policy minds in the United States, was appearing at an event with Henry Kissinger at Georgetown University. His take on U.S. diplomatic outreach comes as Obama's position -- to meet with our enemies even without preconditions -- has gotten the Illinois Democrat routinely criticized as naive and inexperienced from his Democratic and Republican rivals. Scowcroft declined, when asked, to directly assess the foreign policy platform of any of the presidential candidates. But he briefly outlined what he thought was the best steps forward in Iraq.

"Our goal in Iraq is to leave an Iraq that produces more stability in the region and not chaos. And that's going to take time," he said. "[It will take troop presence] for a long time...I think gradually security is improving and as it improves we can reduce troop levels. But what we need to do is provide an environment in which their political evolution continues."

Prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Scowcroft expressed public misgivings concerning the course of action. In 2002, he wrote a Wall Street Journal op-ed titled, "Don't Attack Saddam," and warned that action against Iraq, without a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, "could turn the whole region into a cauldron and thus destroy the war on terrorism."

Scowcroft has since warned about the dangers of a precipitous troop withdrawal from the country. In May 2007, he was quoted in the Financial Times as saying: "If we get out before Iraq is stable, the entire Middle East region might start to resemble Iraq today. Getting out is not a solution." In invading Iraq, "we created a revolution; a social and religious revolution," he said. The U.S. should "gradually withdraw from inter-sectarian warfare. Shia versus Sunni is not a problem we can solve."

Yet a New York Times story published earlier this month identified Scowcroft as part of a group of Republican advisers concerned that McCain "might be coming under increased influence from a competing camp, the neoconservatives, whose thinking dominated President Bush's first term and played a pivotal role in building the case for war."

"Scowcroft is said to have expressed reservations about Mr. McCain's call for creating a League of Democracies as a complement to the United Nations," the Times reported. "An associate of Mr. Scowcroft said he viewed it as an effort to diminish the United Nations -- a target of scorn among neoconservatives -- and inhibit engagement with enemies."

This proves that Obama's foreign policy strategy is "prudent," as 41 might say, and that the charge that Obama's policy is naive or reckless is exposed as bunk.

Obama's refrain of "being as careful getting out as we were careless going in" is in perfect keeping with Scowcroft's warning of the dangers of a precipitous withdrawal.

I like Scowcroft because he knows the dangers of the neocons. He's right on the money in being suspicious of their influence on McCain!

Brent Scowcroft is acting as a public sounding board for many of the concerns that are deeply held by the non neoconservative, K Street Project, wide stance (concerning FISA, torture and many other favorites) wings of the republican party.
He is also reflecting the opinions held by many within the Military, Intelligence & Foreign Service apparatuses concerning McCain & Hillary Clinton generally and with Obama's plan for rapid withdrawal from Iraq specifically.
All in all this is going to serve Obama far more favorably than either one of the other candidates.

More proof of why conservatives are scared to run against Obama. There are too many conservatives that like him. They are concerned.

Attention Americans......Do Not Vote for Rev. Jeremiah Wright for President. The media is playing him up as if he's the one running. And as for guilty by association....that's as insulting and ignorant in this case as it would be if Catholics were told to denounce their Priests and never send their kids to Catholic school again. DON'T BE DUMBED DOWN BY THE MANIPULATIVE MEDIA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God and Patriotism

God of the Christian Slaves and the Slave-owning Christians
God of suffering Poland and forgiving God of Hitler's artisans
God of the cluster-bomb pilot, God of the pre-teen amputee
God of the Klan and yes, God who loves Farrakhan
God who knows when our deepest secret discomfort is hypocrisy

Patriotism that deferred when called to service
Acting like truth and fiction are the same
Renting Generals for the public to be deceived
Feeding the hate that makes us fear

Patriotism that served with honor in times of prejudice
Questioning the things done in our name
Comforting our wounded and bereaved
Saying the things we dare not hear

So?

Divisive or Descriptive?
Controversial or Coherent?
Intelligent or Insensitive?
Opinionated or Offensive?

Hewing gold-plated flag-pins into ears of tin
The noise of reason, drowned by the good intentions of sin
The painful, bifurcated truth of a haunted past
The stunted, bicentennial youth of a connected cast
Sowing the seeds of division or Searching for a more perfect Union?

Has America become greater than God?
Let us all bow in prayer, and genuflect to the media's Opinion.

I don't understand the logic behind diplomacy in speaking within an international forum has anything to do with converting to the Islamic religion. ?

Speaking to a person of another religion does not mean that person will then become a Muslim.

Islam is a fascinating religion, and I believe you are speaking from fear and of something you do not understand.

And this is pro-Islam how? One of the benefits of a higher education is the ability to think critically. I am sorry you did not get the opportunity. Take heart, it is never to late.

I've seen alot of this flip sarcasm by RW'ers. First Obama walks throught the FOX minefield unscathed, and now old school Repubs are validating Obama's ideas, which Hillary and the MSM had more or less successfully framed as being naive. You must be pissed!

This sends a signal to the world and our leadership (super delegates) that Senator Obama has demonstrated sound and responsible judgment in matters of foreign policy and stood his ground while others painted him as a liberal with too lofty of ideas. Senator Obama gives a great speech and understands the issues. It is always important to remember that Senator Obama described in detail the reasons why we should not invade Iraq, while Senator Clinton said that we should, without reading the NIE. As for McCain, not only did he cast a vote in its favor, he has threatened 50+ years in a war without reason. Say no to war so our soldiers and Marines can come home safely and we can begin to repair our country from within.

Finally a rational and sane POV from a Republican.
Wonder how long it will take before he gets censored or mysteriously "disappeared."

Thank you Mr. Scowcroft for bringing some sanity into this debate.

It would better serve the peace process if Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama were more circumspect about their specifics plans to drawdown American troops.

Plans by the incoming administration to withdraw troops should be preceded by intense U.S. diplomatic efforts and high level negotiations with all legitimately recognized parties in the region. Assurances, agreements, and treaties can help secure a long term peace and minimize the military vacuum that will be left once American troops withdraw.

Also, Americans should condemn as unnecessarily aggressive the “obliterate” Iran remarks recently expressed by Mrs. Clinton. While Mrs. Clinton may think these types of statements will play to her favor in the primary and election, they also play to the fear mongering that our foes and enemies use to gain public support among their people. Overly aggressive posturing may also have the unintended effect of delaying the peace process.

Understandably, there is some interest among Americans to provide a nuclear umbrella to protect Israel from a devastating attack. Discussions along these lines could even form a basis for negotiating an agreement with Iran not to produce nuclear weapons. But this can wait until after we withdraw our forces from Iraq and bring some level of stability back to the Middle East.

She can't help pandering to the AJC and its AIPAC; that is, she does not want to stop. And the AJC and its AIPAC don't want her to stop. Let's face it, Hillary will only continue the whole line of neo-con self-serving crap dished up by their likes. Look at what has happened to the Palestinians more currently under the leadership of Olmert. Friends, we are in the camp of the extremist Likudniks and we don't know how to extricate ourselves from this mess. McCain is worse in it. No wonder Lieberman ressurected his candidacy. And we'll be paying for this s--t for a long time in so many different and varied ways. Would to God that we could have more people like Brent Snowcroft to lead us to a peace in the Middle East and maintain a peace after getting us out of this neo-con/Israeli instigated Iraq war. To hell, forever, with the likes of the liars, Bush and Cheney.

Thanks for having the courage to say what I did not. I am tired of a defense policy dictated by the neocons and AIPAC. I have started reading the Israeli and British press for any real coverage of the Middle East. The Israeli press is more accurate and less biased than the Americans. The MSM parrots whatever AIPAC feeds them. Bill Kristol actually did an editorial on the Op-Ed page of the NYT comparing the three candidate's position on Passover. I do not have to make this stuff up. Can you imagine what Alan Dershowitz would have done if someone had been bizarre enough to write something comparable on Lent?
