Scowcroft

Brent Scowcroft, the national security adviser to Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, said on Monday that he agrees with the position, stated mainly by Sen. Barack Obama, that the U.S. would benefit from having direct talks with the leaders of its most distrusted adversaries.

"Absolutely," said Scowcroft, when asked by The Huffington Post whether he thought the next president should meet with the likes of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "It's hard to make things better if you don't talk."

Scowcroft, a former Air Force general who is widely considered to be one of the preeminent foreign policy minds in the United States, was appearing at an event with Henry Kissinger at Georgetown University. His take on U.S. diplomatic outreach comes as Obama's position -- to meet with our enemies even without preconditions -- has gotten the Illinois Democrat routinely criticized as naive and inexperienced from his Democratic and Republican rivals. Scowcroft declined, when asked, to directly assess the foreign policy platform of any of the presidential candidates. But he briefly outlined what he thought was the best steps forward in Iraq.

"Our goal in Iraq is to leave an Iraq that produces more stability in the region and not chaos. And that's going to take time," he said. "[It will take troop presence] for a long time...I think gradually security is improving and as it improves we can reduce troop levels. But what we need to do is provide an environment in which their political evolution continues."

Prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Scowcroft expressed public misgivings concerning the course of action. In 2002, he wrote a Wall Street Journal op-ed titled, "Don't Attack Saddam," and warned that action against Iraq, without a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, "could turn the whole region into a cauldron and thus destroy the war on terrorism."

Scowcroft has since warned about the dangers of a precipitous troop withdrawal from the country. In May 2007, he was quoted in the Financial Times as saying: "If we get out before Iraq is stable, the entire Middle East region might start to resemble Iraq today. Getting out is not a solution." In invading Iraq, "we created a revolution; a social and religious revolution," he said. The U.S. should "gradually withdraw from inter-sectarian warfare. Shia versus Sunni is not a problem we can solve."

Yet a New York Times story published earlier this month identified Scowcroft as part of a group of Republican advisers concerned that McCain "might be coming under increased influence from a competing camp, the neoconservatives, whose thinking dominated President Bush's first term and played a pivotal role in building the case for war."

"Scowcroft is said to have expressed reservations about Mr. McCain's call for creating a League of Democracies as a complement to the United Nations," the Times reported. "An associate of Mr. Scowcroft said he viewed it as an effort to diminish the United Nations -- a target of scorn among neoconservatives -- and inhibit engagement with enemies."

Scowcroft takes up the same issue I've argued for a long time. The way to take down the Mullahs is the olive branch, not the arrow. They have much more to lose than the US. After all, it is we who are Rome in this scenario and we all saw what happened to those who negotiated with Rome historically.

If we extend the hand of peace, we take away their enemy which is the only thing which keeps the Mullahs in power. They exploit fear in the same way American politicians do to manipulate their populace. After taking away the threat, we can then pull the dagger with our other hand and undermine the Iranian regime from within. Historically, this has always been a winner. Great Briton was known as Perfidious Albion for their successful use of this tactic for several generations.

We not only can subvert their government, but at the same time open a gigantic market for American business. The Iranian public loves American culture. If you want revenge for them throwing us out in the revolution of 1979, just send in McDonald's, Pepsico and WalMart. The Mullahs will be sorry then for ever negotiating with the United States. When they're flooded with fast food, shoddy goods, low paying jobs and pornography, they'll rue the day they ever sat down at the table with us.

I thought your post was both witty and sensible. My favorite Voltaire quote is "If God created

I found another piece on what Scowcroft thought of Bill Clinton's foreign Policy:

Scowcroft back in 1998 said that Iraq would be an issue that if we did nothing, it would not be good but if we did something it would not turn out well. Dick Cheney said the same exact thing after the Gulf War right up until 1996. The arms inspectors Scott Ritter and Hans Blix did not believe that there were WMD. What made the neocons want to go into Iraq so badly? Hint: the US gets most of its oil from Mexico, Canada and Venezuela. Why did the neocons want Iraq so bad? Greenspan said oil. Is he right?

Iraq was the stepping stone to Iran. Securing the oil supply gives America leverage over China and India.

Amen. I never though George H Bush's people would seem moderate, but after seven years of academic neocons with a pro-Likud atrocity agenda, Hillary's plans to "obliterate Iran" and McCain's juvenille "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran" song, they are looking pretty good. Thanks for the editorial.

Both McCain and Clinton are neo-cons whose foreign policy philosophy has gotten us to where we are today. Only Obama offers a break from a world weary of the heavy boot of American Empire making us ironically less secure.

I found a few interesting articles on Scowcroft:

2004: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A36644-2004Oct15.html

2002: http://www.ffip.com/opeds081502.htm

2006: http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0808-21.htm
this has a few interesting tid-bits

1990: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2005/10/31/051031fa_fact2
which contains the following quote: "Scowcroft is “not a blowhard,” the senior Bush told me in a recent e-mail. “He has a great propensity for friendship. By that I mean someone I can depend on to tell me what I need to know and not just what I want to hear, and at the same time he is someone on whom I know I always can rely and trust implicitly.”

This is FUN!

"widely considered to be one of the preeminent foreign policy minds in the United States"

...who agrees that Obama's got it right abuot speaking to foreign leaders. Another opportunity to point out that many republicans dislike McCain and could support Obama, but will never, ever vote for Clinton. Super delegates, hello out there, are you paying attention?

I wish that the Clinton supporters would see that he is not an empty suit. He may not look like any president we have ever had but if you let go of your anger, hate and stop being so cynical and get behind our next great president maybe WE can build a better country and a better future for our children with his leadership. Is he a perfect person? No, but I thinks he is the best person for the job at this time in our history.

Me too! I’m convinced that Barack Obama is the right man for the job. The Hillary's folks will need to detox from the Clinton's spell.

Yeah he's too naive and inexperienced. If you're wise and experienced, you'll attack first, then talk later...even if you get stuck in a war.

Was Bush wise and experienced when he invaded Iraq? I mean I remember seeing a video of him picking his nose at a Texas Rangers game. Does that count?

No. She may have won Philly suburbs by saying that she will obliterate Iran - but she also showed her true colors. She's a neocon Republican - and I have lived through enough of them. It's cost me and my family - and the future generations of my family enough. I want my country back and Clinton is not the one to take us there. As the campaign moves on, it becomes almost impossible to distinguish her lies from those of the Bush administration.

The problem is that half the American electorate has only half a brain. That's why they are supporting McCain or Clinton regardless of their actual stance on the issues.

We have seen the Bush administration run propaganda instead of foreign policy and the former is no substitute for wise, insightful and effective policy! Obama and Scowcroft are correct ~ you need to talk seriously with those who oppose you! Enough of pie in the sky foreign policy that does not work!

The Clintons are spending so much time using the Rove playbook, which no longer works, that Bill's Presidency and Hillary's doomed attempt to put Bill back in office will forever be entwined in the history books as the beginning and the end of Dubya's failed efforts to become dictator. It will be the Clinton/Bush era and it will be an extremely good lesson for years about how not to behave in public office.

We want the Constitution back. We don't want torture as a political instrument. We want war crimes punished.

Scowcroft is right on talking to our enemies but fatally wrong about staying in Iraq until it becomes stable; Iraq will NEVER be stable. Besides, what does he mean by "stable"? This war was also supposed to be about making Iraq a democracy, which is a bad joke. Does Scowcroft think Iraq will one day be one? I wish Scowcroft had more courage and spoke out agaimst Bush's II's adventure in Iraq over the years more often. Friendship with George Bush the First should never have had priority over the thousands of Americans killed due to Bush II's juvenile fantasies.
