Former President Jimmy Carter appeared on CNN's Larry King Live on Monday, addressing everything from the 2008 election and Rev. Jeremiah Wright to his recent talks with Hamas.

In the first segment, Carter said he would not have left Wright's church after hearing his remarks, and that Wright wouldn't be "anything permanent or damaging" to Sen. Barack Obama's candidacy.

CARTER: I grew up in Plains, Georgia and we have 600 people and 11 churches. And the largest and most powerful church is the Lebanon Baptist Church, which is an African-American Baptist church, so I have heard this kind of preaching all my life when we visited their church and they came to mine. What I think he's teaching is a liberation theology and his origins... I think sermons are still shaped by the deprivation of racial discrimination that our country has felt for 100 years after the civil war.

Carter said he would not be endorsing a candidate during the primaries (despite the fact that "all of my grandchildren and all of their spouses and all of my children and all of their spouses were for Obama"), and predicted that the party would rally around a winner after the primary elections were over in early June. But he did offer praise to both candidates:

I think [Obama] has brought a new level of eloquence and inspiration to a lot of people. Hillary has also surprised a lot of people with her tenacity and her capability as a formidable candidate. I think at first she was kind of in the shadow of her husband. I think now she's blossomed forth in a very formidable fashion. If I were she, I would not withdraw until defeated and if I was Obama I would go forward as well.

In the second part, Carter addressed his recent trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories, during which he spoke twice to representatives of Hamas. King played clips of John McCain challenging Obama to condemn Carter's meetings, and of Obama saying he personally would not have met with Hamas.

Carter responded:

Well, you know, I know the pressures that are on candidates running for president or Congress or governor or anything else in this country, and I don't blame Senator McCain for making what I consider a very foolish statement, telling Obama to tell me what to do. And I think Obama takes the right attitude by saying it's not his place to tell me what to do, but he would not go and meet with them. I think it's perfectly rational.

Carter has more class than any president in my lifetime. If you southern evangelicals wont an example of a president that reflects the values of Jesus, this is the man, not your warmongering current one.

Carter is sooooooooooooo clueless. The sorriest pres in history. Doesn't have a clue. Neither does Ros.

...end poverty...

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:52 AM on 05/02/2008

You reveal your ignorance...Carter has done more to further world peace and end property than any other American president, seated or retired. He also speaks truth to power -- even when truth is not in fashion as it isn't today.

When BO gets in the White House we can look forward to another glorious 4 years like Carter had.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:39 AM on 05/02/2008

Good Grief! Jimmy Carter's mind is as sharp as a knew knife!
I am more than impressed.

Maybe we need to have a debate between him and John McCain to show
how a well aged man (Carter is 12 years older than McCain!) really looks like.
That might open some eyes...

Thank you, President Carter for your insight. You are a real treasure for this nation.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:23 AM on 05/02/2008

Well, I could not disagree more! Crater is wrong on Hamas and wrong on Reverend Wright, as he was wrong on most everything while he was president. And, if you want Carter to debate with anyone you can wait till hell freezes over. He has not been willing to debate with anyone who disagreed with his factually wrong antisemitic book. In fact he refused to give a speech anywhere where even the audience was allowed to ask questions and challenge him. People like him with strong beliefs but no valid arguments do not like to debate, because they just might be proven wrong and then what happens with the string belief?

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:54 AM on 05/02/2008

Your right, Carter is wrong,.........sees all the problems......has no (valid)solutions.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:42 AM on 05/02/2008

Carter is right on Hamas, Right on Wright, and when he was President he was cleaning up the mess from the Vietnam war economy collapsing. Carter has been the best ex president America has had in living memory. He bravely challenged conventional wisdom on energy, Peace in the middle east, and race relations. Carter spoke the truth, the black church lead the civil rights movment so complaining about racism is a given. Calling black people racist for taking on racial issues is disgusting. It is remenisent of the old tactics used against Martin Luther King who was also called divisive because some did not think there was anything to complain about. The mainstream has not been right in America Ever and its not right now. A few brave men like Carter push to make the world better in the face of the status quo.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:51 AM on 05/02/2008

No, he is correct both about Wright and about Israel's long-term behavior toward the Palestinians as well as their current Bush-like policies toward the Gaza inhabitants. I would be very careful about calling someone like Carter an anti-Semite...it indicates a closed mind on Israeli policies. He probably doesn't care to debate or take questions because this is the sort of garbage he'd have to put up with. He is a great American.

IT TIME, IT WILL BE AS CLEAR AS A SUNNY DAY IN THE ROCKIES, FOR ALL TO SEE, THAT BOTH PRESIDENT CARTER AND FUTURE PRESIDENT BARACK ARE CLASS ACTS.

BUT A CLASSLESS AND MISCREANT FEW ARE INCAPABLE OF EVER GIVING THEM THEIR PROPS.

BECAUSE EVEN GREATER MEN, HAVE FAILED TO GET THEIR PROPER RESPECT FROM THEIR ILK, AS WELL. AND BECAUSE IT APPEARS THAT, THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO PENCHANT NOR CAPACITY FOR GIVING THE RIGHTEOUS, IN THIS WORLD, THEIR PROPER RESPECT. BUT ONE DAY ALL OF THIS WILL CHANGE AND THE LORD WILL MAKE THEM GIVE RESPECT TO THOSE WHOM HE HAS CHOSEN TO RECEIVE IT. AND AT THAT TIME , " FIRST WILL BECOME LAST AND LAST WILL BECOME FIRST"

BUT UNTIL THAT TIME. THESE PEOPLE WILL LABOR UNDER THE IMPRESSION, MISGUIDED AS IT MAY BE, THAT THEY ARE THE ONES WHO DETERMINES WHO IS WORTHY OF RESPECT.AND WHAT A JOKE, THAT WILL BE PROVEN TO BE.

And like I heard someone say, "THEY JUST DON'T KNOW, but they got a new thought coming"

BARACK OBAMA ONLY NEEDS 295 DELEGATES TO WIN THE NOMINATION!

The voters in North Carolina and Indiana, with a win for Obama in their primary's, can put this marathon Democratic primary to an end by voting for Barack Obama.

Barack has 1,730 delegates as of today. He needs 2,025 to win the nomination. I want every Democrat and Independant in Indiana and North Carolina to get to the polls and vote for Barack Obama. Don't let the media spin and the right wing conservative media conglomorates win this election.

Barack Obama is by far the strongest candidate against McCain. Go to www.pollster.com (type it in if the link does not work) and check out the state by state polls. Barack Obama is leading McCain in Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Oregon, Minnesota, and even Colorado. Hillary is losing to McCain in Michigan, Oregon, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Colorado and she is tied with McCain in Minnesota. If Hillary can't win Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Oregon in the general election, then she can't beat McCain.

VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA IN NORTH CAROLINA AND INDIANA, AND LETS GET A DEMOCRAT WIN IN NOVEMBER!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 06:01 PM on 04/30/2008

though i agree with you that obama's nomination is inevitable and democrats should acknowledge this, vote for him and stop this self-destructive process which greatly benefits mccain, i wouldn't put too much faith in polls; they could change on a dime. the republicans will try every jingoistic trick to discredit the democratic candidate. They did it with Cleland, Kerry, Gore---all men who served. They will do it no matter what, and some of the lies will stick, but i think with fewer and fewer people. To win they're going to have to do it the old fashioned way. That is, fraud and chicanery. A republican victory is a stolen one.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:24 AM on 05/01/2008

People in Indiana and North Carolina need to disregard the media and hype, and focus on the most pressing issues, and who can handle and solve the vast problems awaiting the next president.

Watch out for the smears and fears being conjured up by those who want things to stay the same.

Americans(the vast majority) have had no real representation in the past eight years.

We need a real leader, one who connects with the people and who is not afraid to take on the corporate hacks who have influenced the votes. They have given our country illegitmate "leaders' that have crippled the Nation and destroyed another country, without cause. bin Laden still has not answered for his crimes.

Hillary can not give us the kind of change we need, desperately!

President Carter is an intelligent and deeply decent man. How wonderful we have Huffington Post so there is a venue to hear his calm, rational views in the midst of economic and social turmoil.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:59 PM on 04/30/2008

Psssst This was on CNN.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:32 PM on 05/01/2008

Jimmy is a Patriot and a good man.

Some of his policies are wrong but the man has good intentions.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:23 PM on 04/30/2008

As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. There was a time when I agreed with you about Carter's good intentions. I certainly admire the work he did for Habitat for Humanity. However, lately his judgment seems to be muddy. Writing an anti-Israeli book full of factual errors and distortions, visiting Hamas, not things that I would put under the category of good intentions. And yes some (or maybe most) of his policies were wrong while he was president.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:01 AM on 05/02/2008

Carter does not have a natural constituency anymore. Do you see any big name dems hanging with him? Besides, there's more to Carter than people remember. People associate the recession in the early 80s with Reagan. What they foget is Paul Volker was working for Carter first, and started the anti-inflation measures that helped topple Carter and carried through part of Reagan's first term. Carter also had horrible relations with the press. Example:"I don't have anything important to say today, so you can put away your crayons." Some Christian. He beat Bush to the naive statement when he swooned over Soviet Premiere Brezhnev. He later boycotted the Olympics after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, but got no love for it. He wanted to do a grain embargo that caused american farmers immense harm. Reagan himself opposed it and he was a Cold Warrior. Jimmy's better off doing habitat for humanity.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 10:42 AM on 04/30/2008

Carter inherited a huge mess from the republicans. It always takes a dem to clean up after a republican.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:34 PM on 05/01/2008

I voted for Carter twice and still say he was a good president. I think it good for him not to endorse anyone in the primaries and support the nominee for the GE.

Rev. Wright is of no consequence to Obama. He did not endorse Obama but McCain did ask and received the endorsement from Hagee and that does make it an issue. It is not where they attend service it is the political ENDORSEMENT that is the ISSUE .

I support Clinton and in the end I will vote AGAINST McCain, no matter what.

We will need President Carter badly to help heal the Democratic party.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:22 AM on 04/30/2008

Wright is of no consequence. You've go to be kidding. There' s no way Obama will be elected with friends like Wright. He's toast.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:29 PM on 04/30/2008

I agree, Obama is toast. As far as speeches of Hillary's pastor: Kylie, if you are interested why don't you do some research and find them? As far as bias: if there was even a media bias it is huge for Obama. He has many dozens of skeletons in his closet that the media refuses to find... it is not even funny. Be sure that if we have the bad fortune and Obama becomes the nominee the repubs will find them all and will incinerate him. He would be bigger loser than McGovern was, and that is a lot to say.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 03:08 AM on 05/02/2008

Since the media is so obsessed with Obama's former pastor, why don't we hear the sermons of Hillary's spiritual leader 24/7?

Any coverage on Hillary's pastor?
Where does she attend services? Anything a little unusual about her church's doctrine?Wonder how the far-right would handle that, if they only had the info.

Anyone notice the silence about this in the media?
Even Hillary seems to want to keep it on the down-low.

What incredible bias.

Then let's talk about McCain and the ministers he has been begging to endorse him.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:16 AM on 05/02/2008

I hope you like toast, because that is what you will get.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:10 PM on 05/01/2008

Best EX-President...EVER!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:07 AM on 04/30/2008

I totally agree!
Carter had the thankless task of cleaning up the financial hole the Vietnam war had left, and work towards energy independence, so we wouldn't have to fight wars over oil. This called for unpopular decisions and cost him his re-election. Republican scheisters undid great policies, and 30 years later we are in a war for oil. Only this time, the financial aftermath will be much worse, more powerful storms will disrupt crops, and only a sustained movement (aka Obama) will have a slight chance to put us back on the right course.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 02:43 PM on 04/30/2008

The avoidance of the mainstream media to acknowledge Carter's program to attain energy independence via alternative power is evidence of their republican bias, despite phony claims of their "liberalness." Carter passed legislation to give solar tax credits which were necessary because of the high cost of the panels. Buildings which took advantage of that had to abandon the program when reagan became president and capitulated to the oil companies by removing the credits. Yet, somehow Reagan has been canonized and Carter demonized. That's some liberal media we have. Another thing, the government can tell people that they can't buy prescription drugs from canada, that they can't go to Cuba, that they must pay taxes, but somehow the government can't seem to require auto makers to adhere to certain fuel consumption limitations. A government for the oil companies can never be one that could be called by the people, for the people.

Carter is as sharp as ever - a true American patriot. He is a man of discipline and an inspiration to all. His humanitarian initiatives building homes in the US and his peace overatures abroad make him a truely remarkable human being.
Thanks Jimmy!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:15 AM on 04/30/2008

Ditto! Can't we draft him as the democratic candidate!

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:36 AM on 04/30/2008

um, he's 83 years old and probably has more negatives (to the brainwashed general population) than Hillary.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:33 PM on 04/30/2008

I'm afraid Americans can't stand to hear the truth - they've spent too many years (not just with the current administration or media for that matter) being fed a bunch of lies and hysteria to be able to handle it. Anyone who cares to actually read and educate themselves about politics, history and policy will understand that almost all of Wright's comments (fire and brimstone delivery aside) are quite correct and indeed are held by almost 99% of the world's population outside of America. As for Carter, any mature, rational person is able to look at the Middle East and understand that Palestinians have suffered horrendously and that suffering is translating into a war without end and terrorist breeding grounds. Engaging in dialogue, diplomacy and delivering meaningful improvements to the lives of millions of poverty stricken and dispossessed Palestinians is in fact long overdue and the only chance the middle east and the rest of us have of avoiding decades of conflict. It seems that in America, the first amendment does not apply to all those that might espouse an informed, balanced rational view on the issue of Palestine. Expecting American's to be similarly reflective about Wrights statements is equally unrealistic.
