UPDATE: During an interview on Tuesday afternoon with MSNBC, Elizabeth Edwards denied rumors that her or her husband were on the verge of an endorsement. A rough transcript is below, or watch the video:

MSNBC: I do want to get you on this issue in terms of the news value. Can you say to me right here on MSNBC that you or your husband will not endorse in the next week? That is correct?

EDWARDS: I would be surprised. Things can happen at any day, as we found out today, a very big day on the political scene. So you never say never, so I don't know that the situation could not happen in the next week that would change our minds. But our current -- my current inclination is not to say any more than I have said. I'm willing to repeat it as many times as people want me to. John would have to speak for himself. He's also on vacation.

EARLIER:

With only days away from the North Carolina primary, what has become of John Edwards? While his wife has begun to take an active life in the political fray (including a few shots at John McCain's healthcare plan), the former presidential candidate has remained silent.

Today, Hillary Clinton will pick up a big endorsement from North Carolina governor Mike Easley. But the biggest North Carolina endorsement, Edwards himself, seems nowhere in sight. The New York Times reports on the conflicting pressure faced by John Edwards:

Many of Mr. Edwards's supporters in North Carolina have been quietly pressing him to endorse Mr. Obama, and a large group of them, led by Ed Turlington, his campaign chairman during the last presidential race, came forward publicly last week to support Mr. Obama.

On the other hand, Mrs. Edwards, her husband's closest and most trusted adviser, has made it clear that she favors Mrs. Clinton; aides said she had recently tried to persuade Mr. Edwards to do the same.

Read Huffposts continuing coverage of the North Carolina primary.

Elizabeth Edwards has been hired the Center for American Progress, a think tank started by John Podesta, Bill Clinton's former chief of staff. Jay Carney's piece is here:

http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/04/elizabeth_edwards_joins_cap.html

Even if it is the case, as some reports have it, that there are Obama supporters at the CAP, the question is, who got Elizabeth the gig? Do you think all those years of hanging out at home qualifies her for a think tank? Clinton clearly got her the gig, and the deal probably was that EE would talk about health care and only attack Obama from this position. This is how EE probably justifies herself. I suppose we need to ask EE to think about human life in general. Who voted for war? Who threatened Iran with nuclear annihilation?

Even more importantly, both John and Elizabeth Edwards will be spared the spectacle of a red faced Bill Clinton angrily wagging his finger in the air while his minion James Carville angrily evokes the image of biblical characters to slander them for what he perceives as their treacherous ways.

Seriously, dajay, whether they they endorse anyone now, later or never is their decision. They are more than capable of making an informed decision that is right for them. End of story.

The Rev. Wright ordeal is done...now back to the facts...The media diagnoses every demo....the old...young...rich....poor...educated....uneducated.... bowlers, bluecollar, beer drinkers.....And somehow ALWAYS finds a way to give the advantage to Clinton. But it's time for the media to finally raise the most incredible point in the whole campaign. HILLARY HAS LOST THE SUPPORT OF AN ENTIRE RACE OF PEOPLE !!!!!!!! Do you know how incredibly sad this fact is ? Hillary Clinton (who's husband was so loved as to have been called The First Black President) has alienated the black people of America to such a degree that there is no way blacks will support her EVER. This has nothing to do with Obama !!!! Keep in mind folks....Hillary started this campaign with 82% of the black support. But as blacks learned more about her (Goldwater Girl....Against Civil Rights Act 1964...etc.) combined with her LBJ statements and Bill's minimizing of Obama (fairy tale...Jesse won S.Carolina too...etc) blacks were shocked...then incredibly offended beyond recovery. WE FEEL DECEIVED !!!! We hope that our friends of all races understand how we as blacks feel. This is the main story that needs to get out to ALL superdelegates. People across America are contacting the DNC 202-863-8000 to let them (and superdelegates) know that Hillary ABSOLUTELY KILLED HER ELECTABILTY. The truth is the truth !

don't you wish, it's no where near done. She is ahead in the polls against McCain, so maybe we should call the DNC and say Obama and his racist pastor should be done, Hillary is the choice of half the democratic voters in this country, and as I said, she beats McCain by a much larger percentage than Obama. You're right, I think I will call, and voice my displeasure about Obama, I still want to know why he voted for the Cheney Energy bill, what did big oil promise him. I want to know why he is now just disavowing his pastor's words, I guess now that the polls are being affected, he's suddenly outraged. LOL, politics of hope and change. Try not to get your feelings hurt, but there are a large percentage of people who would never vote for Obama, we feel he's a fraud, and we want someone who will represent all of America, not just you!

Well, we feel the same way on our side. There are tons of people who would never vote for Hillary. Obama is going to represent all people, not matter what color they are. We love all people. I happen to be a 67 year old white woman ,by the way. I want to know why Rev. Wright was invited to speak yesterday, at the Press Club, by one of Hillary's supporter's ? Seems like a little hanky panky there.

Listen to me--the polls don't mean squat. Here's the basic truth: one nominee is a black man, and the other is a woman. In this case, THERE IS NO WAY that the party is going to take it away from the person who gets the most elected delegates within the rules. This is a matter of respect for both sides, and if Clinton wins more pledged delegates, then she will have won fair and square. It is absolutely sick that Clinton supporters would suggest otherwise. In disrespecting a fair race, they are disrespecting what it means to have a woman and a black man as the two leading candidates.

THE CLINTONS SUCCESSFULLY FROZE/INTIMIDATED THE EDWARDS FOR MONTHS INTO MORE IRRELEVANCY THAN BILL RICHARDSON

At this point, they're probably too scared of suffering any Clinton backlash to do anything other than back The Clintons or stay neutral.

The Edwards have overplayed their hand and allowed the Clintons to persuade them early on, as they did with Bill Richardson and others, to just wait when they were previously inclined to endorse Obama.

Superdelegates that acceptedThe Clintons' invitation to wait were, knowingly or unknowingly, agreeing to be willing accomplices to everything The Clintons have done in the interim to raise Obama's negatives, which has been the #1 Clinton Campaign priority since the IOWA results were fully absorbed.

This realization is what gave Bill Richardson pause and has also startled others into action who either had underwritten The Clinton Insurgency unwittingly or had just grown weary of the time it was taking to impact the race. It's more likely that the Edwards, who had been arguing that Obama needed to be "tougher" all along, played along savvily with The Clintons by staying on the sidelines up to this point.

Whatever they do now will appropriately be viewed as driven purely by their calculated self-interest, particularly if they split their endorsements or in any way endorse The Clintons (health care mandates not withstanding).

The net result is that they have fiddled while the DEM Party needed leadership; and have thus contributed greatly to their own current & future irrelevance.

You are so right! Especially after Bill Richardson's treatment, most supers are very afraid to speak out against the queen. Their lack of backbone to end this long ago is the reason for the party negatives and split.

I can't wait to see what they're going to do after the NC primary. Will they still hold out or go on with their lives? My guess is that's John's either holding out for AG or SCJ - and I'm not sure he qualifies for either. With that said, I still wish all the best to Elizabeth.

Anyone who votes for Obama after all of what we have learned about him must be brainless.

Obama denounces Wright after 20 years? Political posturing at best, and utterly not believeable.

You call Hillary a liar -- what do you call Obama? He has lied, and lied and lied some more. Even the crazy Rev Wright said so == political posturing -- say what the people want to hear to be electable.

Some of you people must have some brain cells left to see through Obama.

Hillary is our only chance!!!

As far as who John Edwards endorses makes absolutely no difference. Hillary has Indiana wrapped up and the super delegates are so upset with Obama and Wright that Hillary will in the end be the nominee. The ELECTABILITY ISSUE is what the superdelegates care about and so does the DNC.

They now see that Obama is damaged beyond repair and can not win in November.

Finally, the light has come on and Obama's true colors have come out.

Are you stupid? If Obama doesn't step up and denounce "the remarks" (not the man) folks like you would be all in his stuff because he is associated with Rev. Wright. But as soon as he takes a stand against Rev. Wright, people like you are dogging him for "pandering." All of that sounds a lot like some pretext for why folks like you won't vote for Obama. Why don't you just admit the real reason?

I think that you're the one who is brainless if you think that "Hillary is our only chance"!!! She has major electibility issues and anyone with half a brain knows that. Maybe you need to take off your rose colored glasses and look at Hillary for who she is: a pandering, lying, back stabbing witch.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:28 PM on 04/29/2008

If you think Hillary has a chance, you're hardly in any position to call other people "brainless". Obama's still the nominee, bet on it.

Nice try. Hillary is BEYOND electability at this point. Her only motive is to damage Obama's reputation so McWar can win. Simple as that. She's known as a liar, a manipulator and someone who is so power-hungry she will do and say anything to win at all costs.

You don't know how difficult it must have been for Obama to let Wright go the way he did. This was a man he considered family, but Wright overstepped his bounds, he threw Obama under the bus after Obama gave him the benefit of the doubt all this time. Yesterday was the final straw, so Obama did what he was forced to do.

You can't or won't except what he says or does regardless of the situation, so it's almost moot to argue with people such as yourself. You have to be a decent human being to understand the complexities of disowning someone who meant that much to you but truly let you down. I feel saddened and ashamed that people like you lack the DECENCY to see what a good and honest man Sen Obama is. Regardless of whether he is the nominee or not, at least he stayed true to his belief that most reasonable and good Americans will judge him on his own merits, his outstanding ability to bring a diverse coalition of people together to unify our country and make steps to better our failing policies.

SAYS WHO, the Clinton campaign? She only mentioned once she favored Clinton's Healthcare plan, NOT HILLARY.

Given the size of the Edwards home complete with basketball courts, etc. perhaps they could open a clinic for the poor right in their mansion. Can you tell their endorsement doesn't mean much to me?
I am not alone.

Happily, Rev. Wright's most recent comments have resulted in an unequivocal response from Senator Obama. "Rev. Wright does not speak for me" said Obama. However, in the April 30, 2007 issue of "The New York Times" Wright stated he had a conversation with Obama. "If Barack gets past the primary, he might have to publicly distance himself from me." Obama answered,"Yeah, that might have to happen." It has now happened. However, the question is how much of this is staged for political purposes? OBAMA IS A POLITICAL PERSON WITH POLITICAL INTEREST!! WHAT RATIONAL PERSON WOULD DOUBT OBAMA'S COMMENTS ARE POLITICAL IN NATURE?
