Barack Obama, D-Ill., prepares to addresses a breakfast gathering at the National Press Club in Washington, Monday, April 28, 2008. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

WASHINGTON — In a defiant appearance before the Washington media, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright said Monday that criticism surrounding his fiery sermons is an attack on the black church and he rejected those who have labeled him unpatriotic.

"I served six years in the military," Barack Obama's longtime pastor said. "Does that make me patriotic? How many years did (Vice President Dick) Cheney serve?"

Wright spoke at the National Press Club before reporters and a supportive audience of black church leaders beginning a two-day symposium. He said the black church tradition is not bombastic or controversial, but different and misunderstood by the "dominant culture" in the United States.

He said his Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago has a long history of liberating the oppressed by feeding the hungry, supporting recovery for the addicted and helping senior citizens in need. He said congregants have fought in the military, including in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"My goddaughter's unit just arrived in Iraq this week while those who call me unpatriotic have used their positions of privilege to avoid military service while sending over 4,000 American boys and girls to die over a lie," he said.

Wright seemed to relish the chance to speak out after weeks of being derided in the press. He reveled in his retorts, high-fiving an audience member, pointing and winking at his supporters and mocking descriptions of him as Obama's spiritual mentor.

"I'm a pastor, he's a member. I'm not a spiritual mentor. Voodoo," he said, leaning into the microphone and wiggling his fingers in the air like he was conducting a seance.

Wright has been Obama's pastor for more than 20 years. Wright brought Obama to Christianity, inspired the title of his book "The Audacity of Hope," officiated at his wedding and baptized his daughters. Wright also told reporters Monday that he prayed privately with the family right before Obama announced he was running for president, although he didn't appear with them publicly.

Obama has said he disagreed at times with Wright, but video clips of some of the preacher's most controversial remarks have widely been distributed on television and the Internet and been damaging to Obama's campaign.

In a sermon days after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Wright said "America's chickens are coming home to roost" after the United States. Asked what he meant by that, Wright challenged the reporter questioning him.

"Have you heard the whole sermon?" he responded. "No. You haven't heard the whole sermon. That nullifies that question."

He said criticism comes from people who only have heard sound bites playing repeatedly on television and have never listened to his entire sermons.

Wright said he's told Obama that if he is elected in November and is inaugurated in January, "I'm coming after you." He said that's because his differences are not with the American people, but U.S. policies.

"Whether he gets elected or not, I'm still going to have to be answerable to God on November 5 and January 21," Wright said. But he rejected the suggestion that Obama was denouncing him or distancing himself. "He had to distance himself because he's a politician," Wright said.

Wright said he hopes the controversy will spark an honest dialogue about race in America. Wright says black church traditions are unknown to many Americans, as they have been throughout the country's history. He said he hopes the controversy "just might mean that the reality of the African-American church will no longer be invisible."

"It is not an attack on Jeremiah Wright _ it's an attack on the black church," he said to applause.

Wright's appearance was his third in four days, keeping alive a story that continues to dog Obama's campaign and at points creating further controversy.

At the press club, he jokingly offered himself as Obama's running mate and embraced Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan even though he said he doesn't always agree with him. He criticized the U.S. government as imperialist and stood by his suggestion that the U.S. invented the HIV virus as a means of genocide against minorities. "Based on this Tuskegee experiment and based on what has happened to Africans in this country, I believe our government is capable of doing anything," he said.

"God damns some practices and there's no excuse for the things that the government, not the American people, have done," he said. "That doesn't make me not like America or unpatriotic."

Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell (RIP), James Dobson, and now Jeremiah Wright...just add him to the list of "God's messangers" willing to sell their pulpit for a little self-promotion. The list goes on and on.

And, oh yeah, tax exempt.

I think if someone 100 percent believed everything that Rev. Wright said, that they still would also be right to say that it was improper for Rev. Wright at this time to speak out and possibly harm Obama's campaign. Maybe it won't but there is a chance it will and why take that chance. Obama is a good man, why do this to one of your own parishoners?

God Bless Rev Wright for speaking out. As an African American it makes me proud. And God Bless Barack Obama for not playing dirty; not stooping to the tricks of the MSM, the Republicans, or the Neocon Hillary Clinton. If Barack loses the race for the Whitehouse, he will have done so with his integrity in tact. I will be able to hold him up as an example to my child on the virtues that are important. I will be able to say to her, no matter what, never be something that you are not in order to garner the favor of others. The people who care about you, are going to care about you. People who hate you, will always find a reason. And I can use Rev Wright as an example of standing up for yourself no matter who says you are wrong. Stay true to your beliefs. No matter if Barack wins or loses, he has made an impression that will not be forgotten. They (Wright and Obama) have held a mirror up to all of our faces. People who didnt realize they harbor racism, now know whether they are or are not racist (whether they will admit it or not). People who never thought about race issues, realize these issues still exist.

As an African American, what exactly makes you proud of Obama and Wright?

Wright is a Black Pather-inspired racist, and Obama is influenced by him. Obama has no integrity, as he has associated himself with this "liberation" theology heresy for 20 years.

"I will be able to say to her, no matter what, never be something that you are not in order to garner the favor of others."

It's interesting you say this, as Obama's excuse for sitting in Wright's church for 20 years is that he didn't always listen, and that his involvement was purely political.

"And I can use Rev Wright as an example of standing up for yourself no matter who says you are wrong. Stay true to your beliefs."

So, it's better to be proud than to admit that you're wrong?

YOUR OPINION, NOT BASED ON FACT.

It's interesting you say this, as Obama's excuse for sitting in Wright's church for 20 years is that he didn't always listen, and that his involvement was purely political. NOT EVEN AN OPINION, IT IS JUST A DAMN LIE. OBAMA NEVER SAID THAT, NEVER. YOU ARE LYING. POST A CREDIBLE LINK IF YOU CAN.

So, it's better to be proud than to admit that you're wrong? WELL YOU ARE WRONG, DOES THAT MAKE YOU PROUD?

Obama knew the Wright issue was not going to go away, I think he could have asked Wright not to appear publicly but he knew that Wright getting in front of the issue would probably not change alot of minds. Sadly, there are alot of racists in this country, and they will use Wright as an 'excuse' not to support Obama; but they had no intention of ever voting for him.
I do think that a small number of people who had lingering questions about Wright will form a better opinion of him due to these speeches, so I see it as a 'small net positive'. The sad part is that in the scheme of things, we are a country on the brink of bankruptcy, moral and financial, we have huge problems that I am not sure any POTUS can do much about fixing, but we are preoccupied with the pastor of Barack Obama.

Reverend Wright made some very thought provoking statements that will probably be misconstrued by the brain-dead mainstream media. They will probably never air the comment he made about his patriotism when he said he served in the military for 6 years and the affluent in this country(like Cheney) never had to serve.

Taking issue with some of the silly things Rev. Wright said is not an attack on the black church it is an attack on some of the silly thing Rev. Wright said. To make it into anything other than that is "playing the race card". If you use that argument then anytime someone has an issue with something a black preacher says he/she must be attacking the black church. Come on now. Let's not get even more silly with this. The point is Rev. Wright said some things that offended some people and they made an issue out of it. That is what politics is all about. It happens. Those people who agree with him are trying to deflect the issue. That is what politics is all about. It happens. Net/net this is a typical political story nothing more, nothing less.

I think that is why people have an issue with the MSM. If Barack was not running for president, no one would care about Wright. He would just be another Black pastor.

And sometimes the truth is offensive.

its an attack on the preaching style. If you listen to the whole sermon you will learn he is teaching history and history does not lie.

Wright is spot on is history of the black church, the origins of liberation theology and the media's attempt to make him the anti-American, angry black man. I The media and politicians attacked not just him, but the also black church. He has every right to free speech and to defend his own position as a minister. The MSM and the republicans will regret coming after established religion and questioning the rights of religious leaders to speak out on social issues. This is America damnit!

Some pundits responded to his NAACP speech with complete ignorance - as if they've been transported to some tribal meeting of voodoo priests in the Congo. There was no witchcraft or black magic. He was humourous, poignant and relevant!

The press is making him the most famous preacher in America, and he is using them to get is own message across. He's not a politician. He's a minister, and this is still America!

Wright should ask for a meeting with Hillary Strangelove and Bombs McCain. Let's see them turn it down.

What Dr. Wright said, needed to be said. Many others have said it for many years, Dr. King was part of this tradition. I read James Cone 35 years ago in seminary as a "white preacher boy". Books on the story of the American expansion, the outrage against Native Americans the Horrors of the slave trade, the involvment in other nations political conflicts and the lists go on are available for anyone who reads. Sadly, the white prophetic tradition has followed a political party line, left wing or right wing but sadly lacking in the Biblical involvement of the Black prophetic tradition. Left wing is often issue oriented, following the latest fads, right wing is often limited to personal sexual sin and other family values issues like abortion or euthanisa. Consider youself lucky if you heard what Dr. Wright said and had the backgroud to understand it. Consider yourself lucky if you have heard preaching which arises from the Biblical stories of success and failure within the people of God, and calls for repentance, and hopes for salvation.

I strongly support Obama. While he is not the passionate preacher, nor civil rights leader that Dr. Wright is, and is not my generation (I'm 60) he has heard this message, and his commitment to bringing people together to dialogue where hopefully we get beyond soundbytes, speeches and shouting, and actually speak, listen and hear what other other is saying.

Wright continually parts the sea of Americans and makes the divide wider between blacks and whites for personal gain.

alms, I do not think that Rev. Wright hates America or is dividing us. I heard a lot of "RECONCILIATION" during his speech. You see, if your race has been holding the short end of the stick in the Union, you will probably understand the Rev. better. I do not think the solution to race issues in America is not talking about it, but to talk about it and reconcile in a much more respectful manner. If you can take a deep breath and listen without prejudice, he makes a lot of sense ( not the GDM America stuff}

wright is not dividing the whites and blacks he is tell people that we do thing different not deficient. such as we dance different we learned different however we all are same but different.. Many people trying to be the same and if we understand that will stop hating each other.

the main point some of are getting is that White, Black, Gay, Straight, and all religions have to treat other better.

I love that he's setting the record straight, albeit late in the dem. nom. process, but still early enough to forget come noviembre.

It does seem a bit unfair that Wright is getting all this coverage, and Hagee and Hillary's pastor are essentially blocked out. I for one would love to see Hagee on Fox...ha!!!!! What a corner Obama could paint these fools in. You wanna talk about MY pastor? Oh, okay, it's like that? Aight. Where's your holy guy, McPlain?

Wright is another black genius and up against a sermon from hagee or whoever, will clown, hands down. Same for Obama clowning McCain in the debates during the general. It's A Wrap, B.

If Obama loses the nomination or the presidency, he can thank Rev Wright for playing the largest part in that loss. Wright's current media blitz does not help. Those who support Obama may think Rev Wright is great but Wright is making many controversial and unsupported statements.

At the NAACP speech he made a broad statement that black and white children learn with a different part of their brain; that African Americans are right-brained. That is just hogwash. If a white person said that, we would call them racists. There are some children that are right-brained learners and some that are left-brained learners. It is an individual thing. That applies accross the races. What is Obama's learning style -- after all he is of white and black ancestry? How about Tiger Woods with multiple ancestries.

It depends on the child. It depends on how that child was raised. It's like saying that all blacks have rhythm. Or perhaps, that they are all good athletes. I think this is racial stereotyping of the worst kind.

And then, making fun of JFK's speech pattern. I wonder how Caroline and Ted Kennedy felt about that?

He seems to be relishing his 15 minutes of fame and doesn't care whether it helps or hurts Obama.

I watched Rev. Wright on Bill Moyers, I just watched the Press Club speech and answer period. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that the main stream American public who watched either or both from beginning to end will have a better understanding of Rev. Wright.

I saw a wonderful speaker, a man with biblical and historical knowledge who also has insight into what this nation needs to do to become closer to God and to do his work. I am an agnostic and I understood his message clearly. And damn the man has that adorable mischievous arrogance that refuses to curtail or surrender.

Of course, all the MSM is opining about how is Barack Obama going to deal with this? Why is Rev. Wright doing this now, will it hurt Obama?

I have no faith that the "news" media will understand this man or if they do choose the low road instead. I do however strangely, have hope that the American people do understand and will simply tune out the rhetoric. I may be naive but I can still have hope.

This has nothing to do with High Road or Low Road blah blah blah. This has everything with a self-absorbed, militant, chip-on-his shoulder black preacher with an ax to grind. I am sick and tired of being told that I, a "typical white woman" needs to apologize for slavery and apologize for some percieved mistreatment of blacks. I know that we have come a long ways in living in harmony together. But for people who continue to make excuses, continue to blame everyone else for their own problems will not be my problem. I don't hold the black church at all...I hold Wright for hist comments and his hatefullness about American and our government. Making fun of the way Kennedy and Johnson talks will not be helpful for Obama. No one is making fun of the way Obama speaks or that he is different....HELLO!!!!! WE ARE PISSED OF HIS JUDGEMENT IN CHOOSING TO SURROUND HIMSELF WITH PEOPLE LIKE WRIGHT, AYERS, REZKO...CAN YOU UNDERSTAND!!!!

Are you really that afraid of a Black man being President that you would use an association with a man that did something 40 years ago which had nothing to do with a casual work relationship (Ayers) or a man's pastor (Wright), and the rumors, misinformation, and speculation of Rezko? That is it? 3 people - none are in Obama's campaign? That is all you got. Hillary has 50 people in her closet (recently Richard Mellon Scaife) and McCain with Hagee. Who are you going to vote for, Ron Paul? Cause we all have skeletons but we don't own the skeletons in other people's closets and Obama shouldn't be punished for anything but what he does and says. Bush was a 2 term president and his father does business with the Bin Ladens. You can vote based on their friendships but I wouldn't recommend it....just a thought.

McCain believes the war is a success.

When you get in trouble because of all this you call in Rev. Wright and Jess Jackson!

The USA awarding a Civilian Medal of Honor to Farrakhan and Jesse Jackson for going to Iraq to get a US Pilot back is overlooked.
