MEXICO CITY — Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday that sending a second U.S. aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf could serve as a "reminder" to Iran, but he said it's not an escalation of force.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Mexican leaders, Gates said heightening U.S. criticism of Iran and its support for terror groups is not a signal that the administration is laying the groundwork for a strike against Tehran.

Still, he said Iran continues to back the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"I do not have a sense at this point of a significant increase in Iranian support for the Taliban and others opposing the government in Afghanistan," Gates said. "There is, as best I can tell, a continuing flow, but I would still characterize it as relatively modest."

His comments contrasted with those from Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said last week that he had not seen any new signs of Iranian support for the Taliban.

Gates played down the addition of a second carrier to the Gulf, saying that the number of ships there rises and falls continuously. He said he doesn't expect there to two carriers there for a long time.

Asked if the carrier move went hand in hand with the rising U.S. rhetoric against Iran, Gates said, "I don't see it as an escalation. I think it could be seen, though, as a reminder."

In the past, military officials have said that beefing up the Navy's presence in the Gulf was a way to show that that the U.S. remains committed to the region. And they have acknowledged it also serves as a show of force for other countries there, such as Iran.

In recent weeks, U.S. officials have ratcheted up their complaints that Iran is increasing its efforts to supply weapons and training to militants in Iraq.

Military commanders in Baghdad are expected to roll out evidence of that support soon _ including date stamps on newly found weapons caches showing that recently made Iranian weapons are flowing into Iraq at a steadily increasing rate.

Another senior military official said the evidence will include mortars, rockets, small arms, roadside bombs and armor-piercing explosives _ known as explosively formed penetrators or EFPs _ that troops have discovered in caches in recent months. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the evidence has not yet been made public, said that dates on some of the weapons were well after Tehran signaled late last year that it was scaling back aid to insurgents.

Speaking of Afghanistan on Tuesday, Gates said that the Taliban is changing its tactics there _ from large-scale firefighters to a "significant increase in terrorist acts," including roadside bombs and suicide attacks, similar to the one that unsuccessfully targeted Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday.

At least one police officer has been arrested in connection with the assassination attempt, deepening concerns about the Taliban's infiltration of Afghan security forces.

Gates said, however, he does not have a sense that the infiltration is any worse that it has been before. He said that it is important to screen the security forces well and that military trainers working with those forces need to make that a focus of their efforts.

On other matters, Gates said it was critically important for Congress to approve funding for an anti-drug trafficking program to aid Mexico.

The so-called Merida Initiative is a $500 million proposal to counter drug crime in Mexico. While the Pentagon portion of the program is small, the U.S. military has worked with Mexico to provide intelligence, surveillance and equipment to counter drug cartels.

"We have a shared concern and a shared threat in the drug cartels," Gates said, adding that it will benefit the U.S. to enhance Mexico's ability to deal with them.

He added that if Congress failed to approve the funding _ which is included in the emergency war funding bill _ it would be "a real slap at Mexico."

This is Gates first trip to Mexico City and only the second visit in recent history by a Pentagon chief. The only other U.S. defense leader to travel to Mexico was William Perry, in 1985.

Blaming the US directly for the mess and the current situation in Iraq, the Iranian President said the situation(in Iraq) was ''very critical.'' ''They (Iraqis) are under the hegemonic supremacy of a bullying power. To fill their pockets, they (the US) wage wars...The US should now return form the region. They should just evacuate. It will be face saving for them,'' Mr Ahmedinejad said.

He said the current situation in the world was of concern. In Iraq, more than one million people were killed and the ''massacre'' was continuing.

To a question on the current economic situation he said the US dollar had weakened and it was now just a piece of paper.

''Dollar is not Dollar. It is just a paper. They (the US) just publish it and send it to the market,'' he added

If Iran is arming Shiites, don't we share some of the blame for selling arms originally to Iran? Afghanistan? Iraq? Isn't it ironic that our own troops are being maimed and killed by weapons we may have sold? Didn't Isreal sell Iran tons of weapons in the 70's and 80's?
We keep doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results.

How about this... all major arms exporter countries agree to stop selling weapons to any Middle Eastern Country. We'll buy your oil, but since you can't even be trusted to not kill your next door neighbor over a religious spat, let alone foreignors, we refuse to sell you any more arms. If you need humanitarian, infrastructure or educational assistance then we will sell you that. Otherwise no more weapons. How can you expect any positive results from countries that still settle minor grievances with violence and major disagreements with death?
We cannot unwind centuries of ignorant violence with more violence. An occupying force will need 30 years of cradle to college forced freedom (LOL) to even start to remove religious stygmas and hate.

What was our mission over there again? Arming and training the Iraqis? As they stand up, we stand down, right?

I'll tell you what's ironic - the fact that we want to invade Iran in part because of our suspicions that they may be arming and training the Iraqis.

Gates needs to understand that we Americans DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IRAN. Unlike us, they haven't invaded any other countries. Unlike us, they are not occupying any other countries.

Stop the posturing, stop the positioning, stop the propaganda.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:31 AM on 04/30/2008

Uh...not a problem with Iran? How would you like someone who is 10x more extremist than the US right-wing having a nuke? But of course we live in the 21st century where nobody but the states wants to bother any other countries.

"How would you like someone who is 10x more extremist than the US right-wing having a nuke?"

So - when do you plan to invade Pakistan? Oh that's right - we're good friends with their dictator - and they don't have much oil either. By the way, "10x more extremist" is not an accurate description. Watch the documentary film "Jesus Camp" if you want to see just how extremist the reich-wing is.

Ok - so let's game this out. What would happen if Iran used nuclear weapons? If we didn't immediately turn them into a glass parking lot, they would become a global pariah, even more than they are currently. The entire world, including many Middle Eastern countries, would unite against them, invade their country, and crush their government.

It's time to change your diaper.

uh huh.. and if they do manage to build a nuke, a real one, and use it against someone, anyone for that matter.... a single city would be lost - and what do you think would happen to pretty much all the land mass of the Middle East? Oh, that's right, there wouldn't be any left. Iran using a nuke against someone is just neocon hysteria. Nukes are bargaining chips and we have several thousand of them in the game.

The firepower of modern carrier task force is formable at the very least, but according to Senator James Webb who was former Navy Secretary under Regan, multiple carrier battle groups are more at risk of running into each other in the a confined body of water like the Gulf, than actual attack or the confusion of a attack. Using multiple carrier battle groups in the Gulf to saber rattle is a risky proposition at best, according to Senator Webb. Like I said STUCK ON STUPID.

Our gunboat warfare is about as effective as our "shock and awe" crap against insurgents and guerillas. We are being fought to a standstill by these people with primitive ieds and hand-held weapons. Way back when I was in, the pentagon brass scoffed at the Special Forces units that were formed. Not that they were ineffective, it was just that they didn't "fit in" with their management structure. These pentagon clowns need to get back to school and figure out how to win one of these wars they are so fond of starting.

Aircraft Carriers are completely obsolete. They can be decommissioned with dignity or blown up. The worst place to be right now is in a big, fat magnetic target in the middle of a clean body of water - where to hide?

Our own war games had us loosing most of the fleet in the Gulf

but Cheney ordered them to be re-floated before it was published.

Too bad Cheney can't order those sailors killed back to active duty.

You don't get it. Cheney WANTS a carrier blown up. Oil then shoots over $200 bucks (seen the current 1st quarter profits from the gig oil companies?), plus can you imagine what the american people will feel when CNN and Fox display a symbol of their power burning in the Gulf.

Then come the nukes, with every american war-monger (read as 80% of your citizenry), screaming for Iran to be turned into glass.

What a country. The majority are insane, the remainder cowards.

If you are worried about a war with Iran, wait til there are 3 carrier groups there, not just 2. Also, look for a Marine Expeditionary Force as well, as I bet that before the anti-nuclear site airstrikes are carried out (or simultaneously with them) Special forces, aircraft and and Marine forces will strike Revolutionary Guard naval bases and coastal installations.

So, let Georgey-boy posture. Those who truly want a war with Iran are far fewer then those who don't. It'll take a Tonkin Gulf incident to get things moving.

The forces and actions you cite seem insufficient to be anything but a provocation to the Iranians.

I wonder how many of those aircraft carriers Iran could sink with their missles?

I wonder how Secretary Gates will feel if 20% or 30% of our Nimitz class carriers get sunk in one day?

As Chomsky says, we own the world. No one else counts.

Except Israel.

Israel counts so much that every presidential candidate has declared his and her willingness to expend whatever American blood and treasure are necessary “to protect Israel.” There are no limits on the promise “to defend Israel,” no matter what Israel does, no matter if Israel initiates (yet again) war with its neighbors, no matter if it continues to force Palestinians out of their homes and villages in order to “create living room” for Israelis.

With this sort of promise, why should Israel ever settle for anything less than “greater Israel”?

Just as the US government launched its illegal invasion of Iraq on the back of lies about weapons of mass destruction and mushroom clouds, the US government claims it must attack Iran or Iran will build a nuclear weapon. The Bush Regime has learned never to discard a lie as long as it works.

The lie works for the US Congress, the US media and much of the US public, but it is breaking down abroad. On April 27 the British newspaper, the Independent, responded to the recent US government claim that the Syrian facility attacked last September by Israel in an act of naked aggression was a nuclear reactor built by N. Korea:

We must rely on the integrity of the Israeli and US intelligence.
A needless war, a country destroyed, all for bogus intelligence. Why must we repeat our crime in Iran?

On April 26 the Washington Post reported that “the Pentagon is planning for potential military courses of action” against Iran.

The Bush Regime’s national security advisor says Iran is a threat in Iraq, an accusation echoed endlessly by secretary of defense Robert Gates, secretary of state Rice, vice president Cheney, and president Bush. The US, which has 150,000 troops in Iraq, is not a threat. The US troops are protecting Iraq from Iran, al Qaeda, and the Taliban. Just ask Fox “News.”

Doing its part to egg on war with Iran, the US TV news program, “60 MInutes,” gave air time to the commander of the Israeli Air Force, General Eliezer Shkedi, who declared in a special interview that Iranian president Ahmadinejad was the new Hitler and that we must not again make the mistake of disbelieving a Hitler.

There are better candidates for the role than Ahmadinejad.

Gen. Shkedi himself sounds like Hitler blaming Poland for the outbreak of the second world war. Ahmadinejad has attacked no country, whereas Israel repeatedly invades its neighbors and continues 40-year occupations of Syrian and Palestinian territory.

As Noam Chomsky has written, the US government thinks that it owns the world (Chomsky could have added that Israel thinks it owns the Middle East and America). Americans can wallow in indignation over China’s occupation of Tibet, but be perfectly content with America’s occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. Israel can wax eloquently about “Palestinian terrorism” while its military and Zionist settlers terrorize Palestinians.

This is similar to the Bush administration's reminder we'll have war as long as he's in office, or a recession with wasteful spending war policies, or corporate welfare, and reconstruction in other counties while this country is ignored, like Katrina residents. Misdirection while this country goes to hell in a handbasket policies have been disasterous, while the middle class and poor paying the price for their wars.
