MEXICO CITY — Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday that sending a second U.S. aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf could serve as a "reminder" to Iran, but he said it's not an escalation of force.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Mexican leaders, Gates said heightening U.S. criticism of Iran and its support for terror groups is not a signal that the administration is laying the groundwork for a strike against Tehran.

Still, he said Iran continues to back the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"I do not have a sense at this point of a significant increase in Iranian support for the Taliban and others opposing the government in Afghanistan," Gates said. "There is, as best I can tell, a continuing flow, but I would still characterize it as relatively modest."

His comments contrasted with those from Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said last week that he had not seen any new signs of Iranian support for the Taliban.

Gates played down the addition of a second carrier to the Gulf, saying that the number of ships there rises and falls continuously. He said he doesn't expect there to two carriers there for a long time.

Asked if the carrier move went hand in hand with the rising U.S. rhetoric against Iran, Gates said, "I don't see it as an escalation. I think it could be seen, though, as a reminder."

In the past, military officials have said that beefing up the Navy's presence in the Gulf was a way to show that that the U.S. remains committed to the region. And they have acknowledged it also serves as a show of force for other countries there, such as Iran.

In recent weeks, U.S. officials have ratcheted up their complaints that Iran is increasing its efforts to supply weapons and training to militants in Iraq.

Military commanders in Baghdad are expected to roll out evidence of that support soon _ including date stamps on newly found weapons caches showing that recently made Iranian weapons are flowing into Iraq at a steadily increasing rate.

Another senior military official said the evidence will include mortars, rockets, small arms, roadside bombs and armor-piercing explosives _ known as explosively formed penetrators or EFPs _ that troops have discovered in caches in recent months. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the evidence has not yet been made public, said that dates on some of the weapons were well after Tehran signaled late last year that it was scaling back aid to insurgents.

Speaking of Afghanistan on Tuesday, Gates said that the Taliban is changing its tactics there _ from large-scale firefighters to a "significant increase in terrorist acts," including roadside bombs and suicide attacks, similar to the one that unsuccessfully targeted Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday.

At least one police officer has been arrested in connection with the assassination attempt, deepening concerns about the Taliban's infiltration of Afghan security forces.

Gates said, however, he does not have a sense that the infiltration is any worse that it has been before. He said that it is important to screen the security forces well and that military trainers working with those forces need to make that a focus of their efforts.

On other matters, Gates said it was critically important for Congress to approve funding for an anti-drug trafficking program to aid Mexico.

The so-called Merida Initiative is a $500 million proposal to counter drug crime in Mexico. While the Pentagon portion of the program is small, the U.S. military has worked with Mexico to provide intelligence, surveillance and equipment to counter drug cartels.

"We have a shared concern and a shared threat in the drug cartels," Gates said, adding that it will benefit the U.S. to enhance Mexico's ability to deal with them.

He added that if Congress failed to approve the funding _ which is included in the emergency war funding bill _ it would be "a real slap at Mexico."

This is Gates first trip to Mexico City and only the second visit in recent history by a Pentagon chief. The only other U.S. defense leader to travel to Mexico was William Perry, in 1985.

I see that many of you think about our servicemembers a lot. I would just like to remind you that Memorial Day is comming soon. This is not just a day that provides us with a three day weekend. It is a day, and a weekend, to remember and reflect on the contributions that our friends and loved ones and those that have gone before us have made for our Great Nation and our freedom.

Please join me in celebrating not only their lives but their sacrifices by writing a 'Memorial Day Tribute" for a fallen hero at http://djgoski.com

Thank you and Semper Fidelis

Well said Meatball.

Remember, the best way to support our troops is to get them a boss that actually cares about them. Eight years of cynical neglect has to be tough on our brave men and women in the military. They certainly deserve better.

My post was not meant as political, yet you praise my post and put politics into your response. Please don't do that. It is not about Iraq. It is about past and present servicemembers and our freedom to say what we want.

Please, if any of you would like to write something on our humble website in honor of our "Fallen Heros" Go to : http://www.djgoski.com

Thank you and Semper Fidelis

Thank you so much CaptainHowdy for your heartfelt "Tribute" to our Fallen Heros. I would like to post it on http://www.djgoski.com but I would need your real name to go with it.

It means so much to all of us veterans that your "Memorial Day Tribute" be seen by the world in preparation for Memorial Day.

If you would like, since it is so insperational, I could just post it as "anonymous" or as from "CaptainHowdy". We would like your "real" name though.

Let me know,

Again, thank you so much and Semper Fidelis

Remind Iran of WHAT???

What the hell is wrong with the people in charge. Are they so little dicked that this is the only way they can feel like men? To threaten to obliterate an entire country? Men, women and children? MOST of whom don't believe in their leaders?

Anyone watching this show on PBS called CARRIER?

The guys on the carrier are ALL convinced that Iraq was involved in 9/11. The commanders and leaders on that ship are just the dumbest people on Earth. HOW the hell are they allowed to run these things.

There was this one pilot from the Black Aces who actually said he just doesn't like it when people say we should not be in Iraq. He just doesn't get it.

BUT it is interesting to see how many of the sailors DO get it. They don't see why we are in Iraq.

One pilot brought up something interesting. He did forward aiming for the pilots which is something all pilots do. They understand how to guide their fellow pilots better. Well he was there when the bombs were falling and he said afterwards it changed his entire attitude about doing the bombing. NOW he understood the death not just the destruction it caused.

Nonetheless this show is presenting an interesting look at the mindset of those who have to do the shooting and bombing and it is very interesting to see how they cope with it.

It's the male chickenhawk syndrome (aka the Republican syndrome). As long as someone else does the work, the killing, the dying.

The Bastards Are Going To Do It!

They are going to start a war with Iran. Despite all the evidence to the contrary. Despite all the evidence that everything they have touched over the past 7 years has turned to shit.

Despite the fact that an unprovoked war on Iran would be an unquestioned war crime.

What did the Daily Show say last week about the War On Terror. We spent seven years and 700 BILLION dollars and we could have gotten to the same place by doing NOTHING! (Where is Bin Ladin anyhow?)

But Bush/Cheney are going to do one better.

And leave it to the next President to clean up the ir mess. A mess that will be with us for a generation at least. And cost thousands more lives.

Better yet, all Republicans (who haven't yet jumped like rats from their party) should immediately enlist to fight Iran ostensibly for what's left of our freedom. But before this, they must sign a letter of apology for not enlisting to fight in their war for oil in Iraq.

Gates is as stupid as McCain: McCain thinks Al Qaeda is allied with the Shiites. Gates, in spite of what the Chariman of the Joint Chiefs says, thinks that Iran is allied with the Taliban.

This is like saying that the Northern Irish are in cahoots with the Pope.

They just want to play with their gadgets. As for any of our soldiers that would die in trying to occupy Iran and its oil fields, they are "just numbers," right? Isn't that how our President and his buddies look at it?

All the media are advised by active duty and retired military who have been vetted by the gang. So don't even imagine that there will be any impeachments. If it even STARTS to look possible, they have so many ways of scaring the bejesus out of the public that NO one will want to be distracted from their panic to bother about such a silly thing as keeping our Freedoms. Better to be a live slave than a dead liberal, right?

Boy them Iranians must be real dense.

If we didn't have a carrier and other ships in the Gulf, they would think we loved them?

As to Iran's support for the Taliban, here's another take from the Christian Science Monitor

How many more BILLIONS did we spend to send this carrier to the Gulf to "remind" Iran? What a bunch of neocon crapola... they are BANKRUPTING the USA for their FOLLIES and PROFITS.

IMPEACH, ARREST, INDICT, INCARCERATE NOW.

To remind Iran of what? That all we have to throw at them is a bunch of airplanes? At some point, should we make the mistake of starting a war with them, we'll have to send in ground troops. Airplanes and bombs can only do so much, and that's mostly just killing civilians. Then you have to send in the foot soldiers. Where are we going to get them? Our ground forces are stretched to the breaking point. There's no draft and I haven't seen hordes of College Republicans flocking to the recruitment centers lately. No, attacking Iran could be to the US what Operation Barbarosa was to Germany. Not a good idea at all.

Gates is a reminder to me that he is a part of the neocon's terrorist propoganda machine, which is destroying America's standing in the world community, (And here as well).
Gates says: "I do not have a sense at this point of a significant increase in Iranian support for the Taliban and others opposing the government in Afghanistan," Gates said. "There is, as best I can tell, a continuing flow, but I would still characterize it as relatively modest."
Wiat a minute - He has "sense". Wasn't he involved with sale of illegal shipment of weapons to Iranian terrorists in the 1980's whose profits went support Contra-drug running terrorists in Nicarauga.
He has absolutely NO credibility and his words should be dismissed as a matter of course.

You have got to be kidding me. How could Gates think we are so stupid to be taken in by what is obviously a blatant fabrication. That is either right out of the 'lie at any cost playbook' crafted by Rumsfeld and Cheney or he is really as dumb as McCain who does not seem to understand the differences between Shite (Iran) and Sunni (Al Qaeda) who are backing the Taliban.
"Still, he said Iran continues to back the Taliban in Afghanistan.
"I do not have a sense at this point of a significant increase in Iranian support for the Taliban and others opposing the government in Afghanistan," Gates said. "There is, as best I can tell, a continuing flow, but I would still characterize it as relatively modest."
Not only does he contradict the US generals but also the Canadian, British, Dutch and other forces in Afghanistan.
The truth is Iran opposed the Taliban, assisted those fighting against them prior to the invasion then assisted the US and other forces with refugees, etc. when they invaded Afghanistan.
I believe they are gearing up to attack Iran just before Bush leaves the Presidency.
We will be left with the mess but John McCain will be happy!
