At first I was unimpressed--but as I watched the video it grew on me. I like the song, I like the video, I like the story behind the song as presented by the video.

Folks on HuffPo are just inanely and insanely critical. Get a life, get a personality, get some self esteem.

I love her. Too bad she can't sing.

Maybe she should become a synchronized swimmer if she is looking to expand her repetoire. Her breasts could definitely be floatation devices.

What happened to her voice - even the quality of the recording? Sounds like she made in on a PC at home. The music vid looks like they didn't have time to think of anything so they followed her around one day. Great actress. Maybe she's just being gutsy enough to try something new and risky.

This is one of the smartest actresses in the world. Anyone who stars with Robert Redford should know her career is set. She never has to worry about work or proving herself. She is maybe the last child star of this generation.

Brain surgery...that's what she should try.

I do like her...and many of her movies.

But, why? The video is ridiculous and the singing is horrid and droning.

I'm only a minute and thirty seconds thru this, and I can't believe how she sounds like shes in a tunnell...

the horribleness is too confusing

must stop watching

Maybe she'll try olympic gymnastics next.

Rubbish!

Nico sings Tom Waits. interesting.

Nico would have made it interesting; she sounded like a cello tuned by Kurt Weill. Scarlett's performance is just pouty narcissism at it's worst.

Good God Scarlett what have you done!?!?!?!? While I admire your excellent taste in Music, yes Tom Waits is a genius, but this is all you've got!. Please quit singing, and soon. Whoever produced this should be ashamed of themselves.....eeeeeewwwwwww

Tom Waits is not a genius. He's a creep who thinks acting drunk and disheveled somehow makes him a unique artist. Keith Richard has been doing the real thing for much longer and makes much better music.

If you judge this against other actor's shots at the billboard, this isn't that bad. She could sing in a bar band,... even if she was ugly.

Right now I can hear the whole freaking neighborhood watching American Idol.

By comparison? 1-888-Scarlet

I'm sorry. No....just no.

And I'm a fan of her movies.

Bless her hollywood heart for giving it a try. It does really suck though. Then again- anything that puts royalties into Waits' pocket can't be all bad.

Seems bitchy to add my - "this sucks"- to the list. But there you have it. Bless her hollywood heart for giving it a try. I'd respect it more if she created a scholarship fund for talented young musicians instead of dropping the cash for a bad vanity record of herself. Then again, anything that puts royalties in Waits' pocket seems a worthy cause.

Not a rule of thumb that all actors are bad singers/musicians

List of actors who have done records I liked:
Miinie Driver- good playing, good writing- great and distinctive voice- authentic
Dennis Quaid (actually I liked hisband better than any of his movies)
Bird York

or sounded so good singing something in a movie I wish they had:
Meryl Streep
Jennifer Garner
Brad Pitt (okay I guess he was lip syncing in that Mr. And Mrs. Smith scene f*ing funny though and he was on key!)
Anybody have other faves they want to mention?

(sarcastically): wow! a video of a day in the life of Scarlett Johansson while she just as blandly sings karaoke to a Waits song...

won't be looking forward to any more vacuous droning and celebrity worshiping... too many real musicians out there with original music that i would rather have spent my time on - i feel ashamed of myself for getting sucked in

Vaguely Nico-esque with.that drony, monotone. But not too impressive on first listen. Won't search it out after it finishes playing here.

does anyone know who directed this?

She sounds like she's singing from across the street.

The voice sounds weak, but it's hard to tell, because it's so over-processed. As a singer, she's a very pretty actress....

Sorry, Scarlett. You're gorgeous. You're a better than decent actress. You're not a singer.

Also, doesn't help that the vocals and production sound exactly like Sinead O'Connor circa 1985.

Tom Waits deserves far, far better than this. The man is a musical legend.

Celebrity self-absorption as music video.

At least try. You know?

Over produced.
