LOS ANGELES — Paula Abdul must be hearing double.

On a night when "American Idol" switched up the judges' format by making them hold their appraisals until every contestant had a turn, Abdul offered feedback Tuesday for two songs by Jason Castro _ except that he'd only sung one.

Watch, or scroll down to keep reading:

Unlike the usual format, in which each "Idol" performance is judged immediately, Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell were made to take notes, then offer individual critiques in rapid succession at the end of each round. The reason, Seacrest explained, was because "this show is so tight."

So after each of the final five contestants sang one Neil Diamond song, Jackson zipped through his appraisals, offering a few terse words for each before kicking it to a visibly flustered Abdul.

"Oh gosh, we've never had to write these things down ... fast enough," she began, shuffling through her notecards. "Jason, first song, I loved hearing your lower register, which we never really hear, um ... ."

And that's where it started going off the rails.

"The second song, I felt like your usual charm wasn't _ it was missing for me. It kind of left me a little empty."

Indeed.

All six people on stage, including Seacrest, stared blankly (except Syesha Mercado, who wore the furrowed brow of mystification).

"The two songs," she continued, "made me feel like you're not fighting hard enough to get into the top four."

After a smattering of nervous crowd laughter, Jackson finally broke the tension.

"That was just on the first song," he said sheepishly, pointing up to Castro. "Just on the first one."

Simon Cowell closed his eyes and shook his head, and began to guffaw as Abdul's confusion mounted.

"Oh my god, I thought you _ I thought you sang twice!" she said.

She explained that she got confused by looking ahead at the notes for David Cook.

At that point Seacrest, who makes his money by smoothing over situations just such as these, pointed to Abdul, saying: "You're seeing the future, baby!" before cutting her off and throwing to Cowell.

Even Cowell gathered himself to help patch up the moment, patting Abdul on the shoulder and asking, as if to speed things along, "Paula, who was your favorite?"

Her reply: Cook (the same contestant whose performance she supposedly noted as having left her "empty").

Pressed for time, Cowell then put an end to the awkward-fest by bursting into his own rapid-fire valuation: "Jason, forgettable; David Cook, just above average; Brooke (White) a nightmare; David Archuleta, I thought it was amateurish; and Syesha, I thought it was old-fashioned.

"So guys ... I want to see the performance of a lifetime coming up," he said, as if to ensure absolute clarity, "the second time around."

Abdul told "Entertainment Tonight" after the show that she was thrown for a loop when producers apprised the judges of the change "in the dark" at the last minute.

"This was officially the strangest show we've ever done," Cowell said at the conclusion of the telecast, "but I like that. It's kind of a bit chaotic tonight."

Will someone for the life of me please tell me who watches this crap? At least Hell's Kitchen is funny. This is just sad and pathetic. Watching these no talent kids being watched by no talent judges.

Why is it so fashionable to be cynical and unpleasant. Why is it so important to be slick and tough? I think all of the problems we have today are because people don't treat each other with courtesy and respect. I'm not going to judge Paula Abdul for going off the rails once in a while. She's got a good heart and is always kind to the contestants. That's what's important. In a tough ugly business she shows some humanity.

...Paula Abdul would fit very nicely in HRC's campaign, what with Paula judging imaginary songs and HRC recounting imaginary experiences in her life...

...what a twosome they'd make!...

Why does the media spend so much time picking on women? This is a non-story, I thought she did something really aweful, instead she just fluped her lines, big deal.

I think Ryan Seacrest gets picked on more than Paula Abdul

She thought they already sang two songs. I didn't see the show, but from the clip it does seem like she was clueless. We've all seen her "deer in the headlights" mistakes and that's part of her charm..

Uh, what the hell are you talking about? This has nothing to do with Paula being female. This is about her apparently giving a critique for a song not yet song as though it had been and what that reveals about how much of a "fix" this show really is.

Even if Paula already had notes going in, it doesn't mean the show's rigged. The contestants do a dress rehearsal before the live show, which the judges can watch -- and start forming their opinions. Paula probably made some initial notes based on that performance, which of course she could deviate from if Castro had a hugely different performance but which probably are pretty accurate on most things -- things like costume, arrangement, etc. that don't change.

I also was interested to learn that the show's producers use footage from the dress rehearsal to put together the clips they run at the end of the show -- I always wondered how they were so quick with that!

Been seeing excusatory comments like this all day and it just doesn't wash with me... If you were responsible for judging a competition, would you really base your critique on a rehearsal versus the ACTUAL performance? I wouldn't. A contestant could tank in the rehearsal, work out the problems (which is what rehearsals are for), and perform brilliantly in the live show. Nor do I think she confused her notes between contestants. Bottom line, she just was not "present" , which makes any evaluation on her part useless.

After confronting the naked reality of rapidly increasing living expenses, especially fuel costs, it is relaxing to tune in to A.I. each week and slip into the fantasy world of Paula and the premise of the show, especially the notion that tween musical tastes will decide careers.

Nothing should be changed on American Idol. It is the living embodiment of the term High Camp...it is so bad, it is good. Viewers' sense of self-esteem can benefit from invidious comparisons with the judges and Ryan: Randy's lack of an adult lexicon ; Paula's incoherent ramblings ; Simon's relentless snarkiness ; and Ryan's self-absorbed simperings.

All of the remaining five surviving contestants are of minimal talent, but the Dreadheads will assure that Tarantula Head Castro will prevail.

I tried to hate this show. I refused to watch the first couple of seasons... but then I ended up catching a couple of episodes, and there was a singer I liked and started rooting for... and now I enjoy the show. This is just a contest, and you know what, it's entertaining. There are good singers, and bad singers, the judges don't matter other than to give the viewers their "informed" opinion.

Who cares if it's a corporate franchise?

Now if only we could get an American version of Eurovision where all 50 states put forth their best musical talent and compete.

I think she is funny and adorable.
This makes me think that everything is prescripted, planned ahead, oh my goodness, they probably know the winner too. I am very suspicious now. The whole thing was funny but strange.
