LOS ANGELES — Paula Abdul must be hearing double.

On a night when "American Idol" switched up the judges' format by making them hold their appraisals until every contestant had a turn, Abdul offered feedback Tuesday for two songs by Jason Castro _ except that he'd only sung one.

Watch, or scroll down to keep reading:

Unlike the usual format, in which each "Idol" performance is judged immediately, Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell were made to take notes, then offer individual critiques in rapid succession at the end of each round. The reason, Seacrest explained, was because "this show is so tight."

So after each of the final five contestants sang one Neil Diamond song, Jackson zipped through his appraisals, offering a few terse words for each before kicking it to a visibly flustered Abdul.

"Oh gosh, we've never had to write these things down ... fast enough," she began, shuffling through her notecards. "Jason, first song, I loved hearing your lower register, which we never really hear, um ... ."

And that's where it started going off the rails.

"The second song, I felt like your usual charm wasn't _ it was missing for me. It kind of left me a little empty."

Indeed.

All six people on stage, including Seacrest, stared blankly (except Syesha Mercado, who wore the furrowed brow of mystification).

"The two songs," she continued, "made me feel like you're not fighting hard enough to get into the top four."

After a smattering of nervous crowd laughter, Jackson finally broke the tension.

"That was just on the first song," he said sheepishly, pointing up to Castro. "Just on the first one."

Simon Cowell closed his eyes and shook his head, and began to guffaw as Abdul's confusion mounted.

"Oh my god, I thought you _ I thought you sang twice!" she said.

She explained that she got confused by looking ahead at the notes for David Cook.

At that point Seacrest, who makes his money by smoothing over situations just such as these, pointed to Abdul, saying: "You're seeing the future, baby!" before cutting her off and throwing to Cowell.

Even Cowell gathered himself to help patch up the moment, patting Abdul on the shoulder and asking, as if to speed things along, "Paula, who was your favorite?"

Her reply: Cook (the same contestant whose performance she supposedly noted as having left her "empty").

Pressed for time, Cowell then put an end to the awkward-fest by bursting into his own rapid-fire valuation: "Jason, forgettable; David Cook, just above average; Brooke (White) a nightmare; David Archuleta, I thought it was amateurish; and Syesha, I thought it was old-fashioned.

"So guys ... I want to see the performance of a lifetime coming up," he said, as if to ensure absolute clarity, "the second time around."

Abdul told "Entertainment Tonight" after the show that she was thrown for a loop when producers apprised the judges of the change "in the dark" at the last minute.

"This was officially the strangest show we've ever done," Cowell said at the conclusion of the telecast, "but I like that. It's kind of a bit chaotic tonight."

What's this show, American Idol?

You mean that show where these people who pose, try to sing, are being judged by three cynical, unhappy, joyless adults, who take delight in snuffing out some young person's hopes?

That show?

I never watch it. There's a world to save from insane people, running the US Govt, who have possesion of the nuclear football

After the report last week in the NYTImes about how some things are done out of sequence, this situation had me thinking about that situation. Could it be that some things were recorded earlier? The performances were recorded earlier or the comments were done at a different time? This whole thing is so confusing. Of course, Paula has been known to be confused...or medicated?

What is wrong with you ultra left liberals that don't understand that there is still a need and place in this world for entertainment? Not every moment has to be about ending the Iraq war. And as long as you keep suggesting that you're going to just make people think you're insane.

My friends, let's parse the subtle nuances of Simon and Randy's remarks, and the complete bafflement of the participating contestants, while scritinizing whether Paula truly knew she had erred or was mystically transformed by the beauty of the songs...

GEEEEEZ ZUS we are truly screwed when Americans who "might"' have a brain are spending their time on this crap, rather than trying help save our country as it slides toward four more years of Bush.
We should be in the streets, on the trucks with the truckers, marching with Cindy Sheehan. If you think anyone currently in office is going to save us, you actually don't have a brain.

I'm a college educated individual, but when she starts speaking.... that wandering, incoherent babble makes me question my ability to understand English. She can talk for 10 minutes, yet say absolutely NOTHING.

It's astounding.

who wouldnt get confussed having to sit here then pretend you just heard singing talent.

comments here are right.
no way in hell the winners are not picked based on someone thinking they can sell records.
this show never was about good singing .
i wish they would admit it.

Quote: no way in hell the winners are not picked based on someone thinking they can sell records.

The problem is the "Vote as often as you want." policy.

This doesn't allow people that are genuinely critiquing talent to really have an influence. It's about a few thousand rabid fans with autodialers and no life who vote for someone because they're cute or appealing in some way.

Look at the last couple winners:

Taylor Hicks- That premature grey and enthusiasm on stage.

Jordin Sparks- Young and sparkly and cute.

Neither of them were very talented. Now we have David A. as the likely winner. Decent voice, but his appreal comes from that "Aww...shucks" shyness and the fact that soccer moms want to pinch his cheeks.

All of them had some television appeal, but mediocre voices. And, oddly enough, when they were off TV and started having to sell albums....sales tanked. I know they will for David A., too.

So, it's not "American Idol." It's "Most Vocal, Rabid Fanbase Idol"

the problem isn't paula's inane babble....that's part of the comedy of this show. what''s more troubling is
that singers with real talent have been whittled away for popularity's sake. the dreadheads? gimme a break...this stoner dude should have been gone weeks ago. the deer in the headlights act is wearing thin
this year's sanjaya. david archuleta has talent but doesn't know enough about music yet to make it work
he needs to mature a bit. carly and michael johns were cut way too early leaving us with david cook and syesha as the real singing talents on this show. do they have the fan club to pull it off. cook does. hopefully it's more than the raging tweenies can counter.

Stardom has little to do with talent these days. Take Paris Hilton, for example.

just as integrity has nothing to do with journalistic legitimacy -- ie Faux News

why we all pretend that Paris Hilton or Faux News are relevant is beyond me

many many times i have appreciated that songs were not sung. how many times has someone threatened to kill a party by playing a guitar? the ability to deflect would be party crooners from taking over without coming to physical blows is a valuable social skill. one way is for a good number of people to break in and say they already heard it on another occasion- it can't be just one though. if paula had asked me if i heard the song i definitely would have agreed.
