Garin

With 60s-era radicalism now a hot topic in the Democratic primary, it's worth noting the (amusing, ironic) history of Sen. Hillary Clinton's co-chief strategist Geoff Garin.

Philip Weiss, who attended Harvard with Garin more than 30 years ago, recalls that he was "a special guy -- softspoken, funny, brilliant. He was also a radical. In 1973, on an anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, Garin called for violent revolution in the United States" in the student paper, the Crimson:

...America and much of the world is living dangerously close to oppression. ... Whether Americans will soon become steadfast in their resistance to oppression depends on their coming to understand what resistance is all about. The way we celebrate the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party will gauge the depth of that understanding.... Freedom is on the wane in this country and repression is on the rise all over the world. We can no longer sit back and swap stories about the good old revolution. We have to start worrying about the present. On this anniversary we must recognize that the patriots of Boston acted wisely in overthrowing their oppressors and the time is come to express our confidence in what our forefathers did by doing it ourselves. [my emphasis]

Following Agnew's resignation in 1973, Garin again spoke of revolution:

The government in Washington can not survive under these circumstances, and under these circumstances the government should not survive.... America will be governed in any case, but the question is by whom. If not by the people, then by a strong executive. These are revolutionary times, and we must decide now whom we want to win the revolution.

Of course, Garin was 20 years old when he wrote the pieces above. But as Weiss notes, "It is helpful to read his writings because they demonstrate: how much people grow, how common revolutionary statements have been in the left (even in the Jewish meritocracy, of which Garin and I are members). But mostly because they show that the continuum of left-center ideas, which are now coming back into American life, includes Wright, Garin, and Obama."

With 60s-era radicalism now a hot topic in the Democratic primary, it's worth noting the (amusing, ironic) history of Sen. Hillary Clinton's co-chief strategist Geoff Garin. Philip Weiss, who attend...

The saying use to be in the 60's 'I don't trust anyone over 30'...now it's 'I don't trust anyone over 60'.

Has the mainstream media picked it up? Of course not. They are threatened by Obama and want to drag him down. If they can pull the guilt by association for Obama, why can't they pull the same crap with Clinton. Maybe corporate media wants Clinton in the whte house. She'll keep the status quo while pretending she's for the little people. It worked for her husband, why not her. (Remember welfare deform and NAFTA?

When will all this lunacy stop. Obama and Hillary and McCain have baggage so what! Can we get to the point of REAL issues instead of all this back biting B.S. that doesn't mean squat. I want to know what are their plans to undo the damage that 8 years of dictatorship had done to this country. How will we get out of Iraq? When will we actually take care of our soldiers? What about the economy the falling dollar, high unemployment, rising gas prices and food prices? The crimes committed by this administration etc.. All this other stuff is trivial and appalling to one intelligence. I don't want or intend of drinking a beer with the president. I for one am sick of this enquirer mentality our MSM is giving us these past election cycles. The MSM is useless and underhanded. Why didn't they spend this much time prior to war. They are sending you the message they what you to feed on. They are setting the agenda and most are lapping it up like gold. The REAL issues is what matters the rest is B.S..

The Ayers thing seems to have died down.

Most likely because of this little chunk of information, and Hillary's own history, the Clinton camp had to back off of some of their hypocrisy.

The Ayers thing is just as much a non-issue as this is. That was along time ago. Obama was what..8 years old at the time?? And Hillary's side did not commit crimes against the state either. This is a weak attempt, at best to make each other look bad. It has no relevance at all.

Never actually charged with a crime. But guilt by association doesn't really have any evidentiary requirements.

America's "Chief White Woman" needs to immediately reject and denounce her new chief strategist for his violent past. How can she continue to be the CWW-in-Chief if she associates with these kinds of people?

Clearly, this demonstrates an untenable lapse in judgement and proves she has not been fully vetted by the media who continue their love affair with Clinton. Someone needs to ask HER immediately if Geoff Garin is patriotic, does he love America enough, why doesn't he wear a flag pin, when was the last time he put his hand over his heart during "America the Beautiful," why can't he sing the Star-Spangled Banner on key with the correct words and minus the beer hat, when was the last ime his wife was "really proud of America," why does he not eat hot dogs, when was the last time he ate apple pie made by his mom, and how many other radicals is he associating with?

I mean standards for presidential associations are pretty high.

Good one. Thanks for the chuckle -- but of course, you're right on the mark. Funny how that stuff seems so ridiculous when applied to a white guy with short, salt & pepper hair, two chins and a nice suit. Too bad the pinheads don't see (or won't admit) that it's just as ridiculous when applied to Obama.

Humor cuts through the crap better than almost anything. Hence, Stuart and Colbert et. al. are relevant beyond their basic comedic scope. We could all take a lesson from that. The HRC camp could sure do with some ridicule!

"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established, should not be changed for light and transient causes; and, accordingly, all experience [has] shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce [the people] under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security."

--Thomas Jefferson: Declaration of Independence, 1776. ME 1:29, Papers 1:429

People should think about this before letting the Corporate Media tell them how to judge anyone fighting back against this fascist tyranny and their shoot-from-the-hip use of the term "Terrorist" (BTW, the Framers revolted as a result of a minute-fraction of what we are going through now. King George thought the same way as the U.S. Corpo-Fascist Media.....)

Start thinking for yourselves. Are you "Patriots" or "Regime Cheerleaders"?

I'm choosing the candidate with the most radical of affiliations.

I think Obama should have stood by Wright. The world is ready for change. The status-quo has maded it painfully clear they will not let change happen via normal, "moderate" avenues.

I'll be damned if I'm going to sit by and let the same Corporate Propaganda Machine - that helped cover-up the assassinations of JFK, RFK, MLK - tell me what is "radical" while they sat by idle watching one of the suspects occupy the White House for 4 years without doing a single, critical background piece on him and his shady past/associations/family scandals (not saying who, it should be obvious..)

"Radicalism" = "Courage" Let's be "Radical"

This is exactly why all your calls for the media to talk about important things and stop leaning on right wing talking points falls on deaf ears.

You (and the blogesphere on the whole) have become worse than the media you criticize. You're vicious propaganda peddlers. Shame on you.

Regarding this point, I can't say much of anything negative about the Hillary campaign other than to note as others have how she has used such past and present associations as a weapon, and how one-sided the media has been regarding this issue.

You see, I think that anybody who absolutely disassociatesher or himself from the various fragments of our society - or who grew up surrounded by only one tiny segment of our society (a la George W. Bush) is destined to be a lousy President.

They will not represent all of America - they will only represent and/or lead that tiny segment of society that they are familiar with and care about (again, a la George W. Bush).

I suspect, though, that Hillary is much more isolated than Obama; certainly she has displayed a facility to say "Screw 'em." when some segment of America doesn't do exactly what she wants, thereby abdicting her responsibility to represent all of our society.

Let's see a 20 year old who wrote an article and no one got hurt or a guy that killed police men and people who worked for the govt.? Not too mention Ayers just said a few years ago that they should have killed more people.. Nice parallel this site tries to paint.

There is no parallel.

Hillary employed Garin.

Obama's relationtionship with Ayers is much more tenuous.

There is more of a parallel with Hillary's relationship with Garin and her employment with Treuhaft, Walker and Burnstein.

Bill Ayers didn't "kill police officers." The two former Weather Underground members that BILL CLINTON PARDONED DID. Facts, may dear, facts.

It is the exact parallel. What is good for the gander, is extra-specially good for the GOOSE named Hillary.

he did not say he wished they'd killed more people.
and the point is genuis, that both candidates have associates with pasts that could be used against them. Hillary brought up Ayers when she should have kept her mouth shut on the issue. Instead she opened herself up to criticism. I don't give a rat's behind about ethier "radical" This isn't about who was less so or more so.

That is not what Ayers said, he said he regretted that they didn't DO more. He never said he wished they'd killed more people, and has repeatedly stressed that the NYT deliberately distorted his statement, which he says was made in relation to the efforts to stop the Vietnam war. And here's what you forgot to note from that same article where you took an out of context quote which you twisted more...

"[Ayers] was 'embarrassed by the arrogance, the solipsism, the absolute certainty that we and we alone knew the way. The rigidity and the narcissism."

And this...

''I don't think you can understand a single thing we did without understanding the violence of the Vietnam War,'' he said, and the fact that ''the enduring scar of racism was fully in flower.'' Mr. Ayers pointed to Bob Kerrey, former Democratic Senator from Nebraska, who has admitted leading a raid in 1969 in which Vietnamese women and children were killed. ''He committed an act of terrorism,'' Mr. Ayers said. ''I didn't kill innocent people.''

Which is true, Ayers never killed anyone, he was never charged with murder, and none of the dropped charges were murder... Funny how selectively we see things.

Quick! Get this on every news show, on every talk radio show and in every kind of print media. We must ram this down the public's throat and question Hillary about this again, and again, and again. Oops...........sorry - wrong candidate. These tactics are only used when Senator Obama is the candidate in question!

Seriously, isn't something someone suggested 33 years ago pretty much a non-story? Isn't something someone did when Obama was a child also a non-story? Our economy is a mess and we are embroiled in a war that should be called 'Viet Nam -The Mideast Version' ------- can't we focus on issues with just a bit more relevance?

Well, this revelation will only hurt Hillary in a race against John McCain, because Barack Obama has not stooped to slander the way Hillary has gone after him - and by "gone after him" I mean "gone after everybody around him but avoiding Obama himself as well as the real issues."

It's very ironic also, since Garin is now working for a politician as much in the pocket of corporations as Nixon ever was.

A previous poster (AbstractImp) said "Coupled with the full investigation of the corporate misuse of media. . ."

That is exactly WHY the corporate (Republican) news media participate in the "swift-boating" of any Democratic candidate. They are afraid of any threat to their control of our "news." They pick a topic and then talk about it non-stop on their tv shows and play endless loops of contrived video for maximum effect. They do this 24 hours a day, seven days a week, show after show, non-stop until they accomplish their goal:

They have crucified Obama with Jeremiah Wright 24/7.

They will crucify Hillary with something (mark my words) 24/7.

They crucified John Kerry by playing an endless loop of swift-boat ads 24/7.

They crucified Howard Dean with nothing more than an overly exuberant campaign yell that they played 24/7.

They crucified Al Gore with constant harping on his "stiffness," his internet remark, his "lock-box" remark, etc. 24/7. (Real important issues, right?)

They crucified Bill Clinton with Monica Lewinsky 24/7.

They crucified Michael Dukakis with Willie Horton and the Army tank photo 24/7.

And on and on.

Do they do this to REPUBLICAN candidates? HELL NO! You are being controlled, folks. Pravda is alive and well in the USA.
